- A mini documentary about Brett King of Orange County California. His company Brett King Design is an up-and-coming custom helmet painting shop that is receiving a lot of attention as of late. His new flavor of designs and his unique style have brought big names to the company such as Josef Newgarden, 2012 Indy Car rookie, Joey Hand, DTM BMW driver, Fabian Coulthard, V8 Supercars driver, and a plethora of top caliber racing drivers from all over the world.
I Really enjoy your story. I read an article about you a few weeks ago in a Scca magazine and was intrigued about the career that you have created for yourself and the leaps you have taken to be where you are now. I am glad I found this video now. I am also a graphic designer and can relate 100% when you say there are good days and bad and comfort level plays a big part of it. Keep up your good work.

Do you mean spray gun James ? The large gun is an Iwata WH400, and then the LHP80 Mini gravity feed spray guns.... Good luck !
hey Brett my name is Jordan Wyse and I also do custom helmet painting. I've painted two of my helmets with red and white ghost flames and now I'm doing a white open faced helmet white the a design called 1000 skulls in light brown but I do it in my spare time as a hobby because I've only been airbrushing for about 4 years now but seeing this video really inspired me to want to keep trying and I wish I worked at your company because I know I could learn a lot and be a valuable employee
what paint do you use?
Inspiring. you can tell your style and which is your sprayed helmets with out even seeing your logo. Just striking design.
A trick: you can watch series on flixzone. Been using them for watching all kinds of movies these days.

First off I want to say how much you've inspired me. I got into painting the same way. I raced motocross for 16 years and I wanted my own helmet. unfortunately I got away from mx helmets, bc it was just too daunting. but after getting really good at RC bodies and design theory I've taken the steps to expand my business into mx helmets again and it started bc of tgis vid so thank you. a few questions if you don't mind. do you primer or seal a helmet before paint, and where do you go for inspiration on those days you just can't do it? thanks again and keep up the amazing work.

Man i want you to do my helmet when i get it. I have been looking for a nice design and i have only found a few i liked but they are discontinued now and i was actually trying to design my own tonmake it more personal. I want to get into truxton cup racing and my son was diagnosed with being on the autism spectrum. At first i was upset because i want him to still have a normal life style but he has gotten a lot better through therapy and early intervention as well as special ed. One thing that he and i have in common and love more than anything is race cars and bikes. So when i race i want it to be for him and to represent all other families that have this complication.

Maybe one day we will take a trip back to California and stop by. i showed him your work and he stared at it for a bout 30 minutes and watched me sketch and joined in, picking colors for me. I no ur prob not Gona respond or see this. But I'm getting Into painting helmets. Is there any advice u could give me and I'm kinda on a budget and work outta my basement. What are some of the basic supplys I need to get started and to do a good job.
Conner Fleury Hi Connor, It's tough to tell you everything but basically you need to tape of all the rubber trims and sand the helmet with 600 grit sandpaper and then start painting. Use a fine line masking tape like 3M 218 and good masking tape ( anything 3M basically - I use 3M Highland ) . You will need to clear-coat your graphics after you are done to protect them as well. Practice makes perfect !!! Good luck !
ok thankyou. how bout paint wise will i need a full car painter or can i just use an air brush. also for sanders. like a regular wood sander the kind you would find at home depot or an appliance store or like a air driven car sander.
Who makes that surface gauge? I've never seen one that holds a pencil.

Pratik Sadalge Only a few ounces of color Pratik. Clearcoat you typically spray about a quart or so and have a bit left over.

Hi Brett lovin your helmets and your attention to detail,. can you tell me what tape you use? I am usung J tape and although i have had good results I am finding some issues with it, doesnt harm to try other products.
I also have a back ground in auto body and currently work on city buses for the city I live in, Halifax Nova Scotia.. I would welcome the opportunity to talk to you about painting helmets. I love to do it and it's not work to me at all but a process I continue to strive to get better at.

What brand and specific type of painter's tape do you use? I'm planning on custom painting mine, but I want to know which tapes have good adhesion on the edge for clean lines upon removal.

+gloryths I am pretty sure if the paint effected the safety of the helmet you wouldn't have every major driver in the world have a custom painted helmet. I mean even plain white helmets you get from the store have paint on them... its just white paint.

do you only paint new helmet. or can you psint helmets that have chip marks and imperfections? if you can paint helmets that have chip marks how do you fix them with a bondo or primer?
