When I make a batch whatever is left over I freeze it and pull it out and unthaw as needed. But it's so cheap to make that throwing it away is not a big deal. Hope this helps.
I agree, I don't use this to twist my hair, but I used it to tame these edges and when I say I had mad buildup it was crazy. Washing my hair was JOB in a half and it left white residue in my locs .
I make my own whipped hair butter. Coconut oil, shea butter and vitamin E or Avocado oil. Melt them down in a double boiler. let it come to soft to slightly hard consistency. Blend with a hand mixer. I use that for my retwist and when I apply it to my hair it melts. It's not a hard at all. I've never used anything else. My hair is soft, holds and retwist last. Not using gel or anything thats hard works for my hair.
Patty Phattty the heat of my scalp melts the shea butter , I tried the eco styler line but it never agreed with me, I got mad build up and my scalp used to feel heavy. I tried the shea butter mixture(small amounts) and it works for me! no itch, no visible flaking of my scalp and my hair feels softer.
nisha libert nice to know that! Maybe one day I'll try it out 😬 I love shea butter. When I used the other Ecostyler, i never experienced build up, it's just interesting that other ppl got build up from it..
I've been using the eco styler also and you are truly right. Maaad build up and also white all over my hair and head. I also retwist my husband hair with it and you should see the amount of itching he does. Just the other day i said i am going to stop using it.
I agree I went to the shop to start trailer and the young lady charged me $100 when she was done and turned me around I looked and saw that she was using echo gel. I was very disappointed because I use echo gel but not for dreadlocks, and three days my hair was unravel. My money was wasted and I just left her alone.
I had it used on my hair twice and now I don't use anything on my hair at all to re-twist. Just oil. I learned early on that our hair doesn't need product to loc.
wen I was a loose natural I used to hate the hunt for the holy grail of products. I vowed tht wen I locked I wudnt do the same thing so I don't twist I only separate them and oil once a week. I dread the thought of build-up !
Donna Reid so many people think they need product for their hair to loc and they really don't. Just keeping your hair clean and moisturized is necessary.
+Afromantic Muses yup, indeed! You don't need much to lock your hair, but I think because people are accustomed to how loose naturals are heavy on products..that's how it should be and that's definitely not the case.
Patty Phattty ikr! The struggle. I'm only 8 months in but I try not to really retwist that much. I just interlock periodically. Any creams, gels, puddings, pomades, etc has also left flakes or residue in my and my daughters hair so I just use my water and oil. Different strokes. Your locs are soooo pretty though 😍
You can also try making your own flaxseed gel. It's very easy to make and gives a great flexible hold and it extremely light, no build up and washes out easy
Patty Phattty I hear you on that! I get that way sometimes too I will definitely try out the aloe very gel too you're the second person I've heard use it and love it.
I was contemplating buying these product. Thanks for the warning. I accidentally found a video about a major hair setback due to Eco Gel. So I'm doing some research and I found your video. Beautiful locs btw. Thanks!
I went to this place to start my dreads and I feel like I'm going to regret it because they started by telling me they're going to use wax.......if I didn't know about it I would have had it.....then they used this same product in my hair and I literally washed it today and saw the exact thing you're talking about. How did you get it out?
When it comes to locs its better to think in treams if what will penetrate rather than just sit on top, and this shoukd really be allied even with retwisting. Tbh you really only need water and a few oils of choice when it comes to locs. Things like; creams, gels, shea butter or any puddings and such do nothing but sit on top of the loc (on the otter most exposed layer) and never go deeper. They'er help for holding a retwist but at the risk of build and and gunk.
Hey sis, love your vids. To get rid of the build up, use lemon dishwashing liquid then wash with Dr bronners peppermint shampoo. Only use the dishwashing soap to get the buildup. I use Dr bronners shampoo and castor oil on my locs. That's it. Check for Yannie the locologist on TH-cam. Hope this helps! Peace!
ok I hope I don't offend anyone but why would ppl need gel in locs i don't even like gel on my edges lmao and Im wearing a fro no Bueno!! but I just hate gel to be honest... that and coconut oil I hate both!!
+KeepingItKASEY to each its own, my dear. The gel is primarily used to hold the retwist from unraveling and also give it a sleek look. However, it is not a necessity, you right. Go ahead and rock your crown with no gel, I ain't mad at cha.
Girl.. I used that gel on my locs as well.. And I had the worst build up ever.. I and don't have build up. I was sooooo not having it.. Never using that gel ever again
I’m just starting my dreads and just bought this product my hair is super short so I’m just using it to keep the twist in place would you still recommend using still ?
Hey family! Don't forget to give this video a thumbs up! Ecostyler is not my friend no more! What gel/product do you guys use to retwist your hair? Also I plan on doing another Q&A soon, so drop your questions below so I can get your questions answered, if you'd like!! Love you all :) Be Spiffy, Be You!
Patty Phattty I just did a review of the drlocs products on my channel. I'm going to look into purchasing that aloe Vera gel, I love products I can use on my hair and skin.
Hi how are you i have locks but i think my hair isn't neat , sometime before next retwist i think im go to new style list because i need some advice had dreads for 11 months
Dashaun Slater hello, I'm doing well! How are you? Well... your hair is not going to be "neat" every day 365, it's not very realistic. Your hair is still going through transitions
+Reese Marie aww! Well, I'm glad that I found this out...after researching something else and stumbling across the info of Eco Styler. I have about 1 jumbo bucket and three large Ecostyler gels 😩😩 now I gotta toss them 🙄
Patty Phattty hey sis. I'm going to restart my journey doing two strand twists and I was going to use the Eco styled gel Argan* oil. So what's something good to use?
I can't believe you used it in the first place. But when you know better you do better. Good job. I, like most in the comment use flaxseed gel or just plain aloe.
+dawn forbes I tried it because I was using Ecostyler for 5 years... I knew from the jump that ecostyler is not the best for locs but I personally didn't have a build up issue until now.
+Brandee Dantzler it does not directly say that it has carcinogens but the ingredients listed when reached you will find that there are several harmful ingredients in the product such as TEA, sodium hydroxymethylglycinate, tetrasodium EDTA, etc.
OMG THANK YOU!!!! I went to a salon for the first time 3 weeks ago and she wanted to use this in my locs to retwist helllll no lol she had to use something else never again will I go there!!
+MegaSophsoph you're welcome hun! Some people don't always research products and things so she probably didn't know. But glad that you don't have to experience what I did
Hey Beautiful! Oh my days 😱😱😱😱😱 thank you for that wanted to try that on my locs a few weeks ago but I thought no! For some reason. I use the clear Eco Styler have you tried that one? 🤔 anyway I always prefer natural products wouldn't mind trying that Aloe gel you use.. thanks for sharing. Make up looks great! 👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾😘❤️❤️❤️
MAZZ 777 Naturals hey sis! 😍😍😘 yeah I actually like this new one I got now. Too bad Ecostyler is not my friend anymore 😩😩 I haven't tried the other eco styler that you said tho
Oh no!! I use locking gel. My stylists/fam with locs use locking gel too. From what I know Ecostyler gel isn't for locs. I used to use it for edges when I was lose natural.
Taj & Nye I’ve just started my locs about two weeks ago using eco styler gel. But I have one section of hair at the back that makes up 2 twists, and is very stubborn so the twists just unravel. so I used got2b on that small section only... long story short don’t use it, it leaves the hair too sticky and the build up is REAL. Hope that helps :)
+Patty Phattty Just bought 3 bottles of the Aloe Vera Jelly based on your review. Would it cause buildup? Your locs are gorgeous! Just started my loc journey.
I learned this the hard way... I started my locs with it but it flaked up alot on my scalp and caused lots of build up. My stylist learned from this and now we use Jamaican Custard. So thank you for warning people about this because this was a big no no 😂😂😂
I've never had a problem with Eco styler gel until recently.I don't know what they did to the product, but all of the varieties are giving me mad build up. When I squeeze my loc you can see it on my fingers, so now I just use rose water mixed with a little vitamin e oil. This is coming from someone who's had Locs for over 20 years.
+Valita S. yes I do an ACV spritz... I don't dunk my head in acv in the sink though. Instead I spray my locs with it and saturate it all over and cover it and let it sit for 15 mins and then wash it out. I have a video on it.

I make flaxseed gel - super cheap and easy...and gives a great hold and I haven't noticed any buildup.
Coach Kendra Nicole the only reason I havent tried this yet is because of its shelf life. how do you get it to last? or do you mix only when needed?
When I make a batch whatever is left over I freeze it and pull it out and unthaw as needed. But it's so cheap to make that throwing it away is not a big deal. Hope this helps.
Coach Kendra Nicole yeah I made flaxseed gel before, it's great for our hair...I just get lazy sometimes to make it lol
I don't get the build up either and it conditions my hair so nicely
Put vitamin e in it
Your face is flawless

I agree, I don't use this to twist my hair, but I used it to tame these edges and when I say I had mad buildup it was crazy. Washing my hair was JOB in a half and it left white residue in my locs .
I just use essential oils, whipped shea butter and water...only!
Has the shea butter caused any build up for you? I am so scared to use shea butter because it's so thick
