- Magnetic Island is located 8km offshore from the city of Townsville, Queensland Australia. Named by James Cook during his exploration of the Australia’s east coast in 1770 due to its apparent ‘magnetic effect’ on the ship’s compass. Numerous studies since Cook’s expedition have never located the source of the reported magnetic anomaly. Today Magnetic island is home to more than 2000 permanent residents and is a popular tourist destination. This film showcases Magnetic Island’s natural beauty including its beaches, rocky bays, wildlife and historical fortifications dating back to world War 2.
