I had this exact problem on a 1987 Heritage. Found it because the primary chain case was filling with engine oil. The Motor Company wouldn't stand behind it and that's the side with the serial number. I wound up building an engine with aftermarket cases. Eventually I got a new engine through the exchange program they had back then.
