To ramble can mean talking without sticking to a point, but it can also mean travelling without any particular end point in mind. It's the latter meaning here. It's about someone who finds it hard to settle down in one place and he's torn between his desire to leave and desire to stay. The music and change of tempo reflect his torn feelings and turbulent emotions. This song was originally written by a woman called Anne Bredon but the music is all their own.

It is an amazing song! Off their first album, Plant was 19 yrs old. This track is the studio version (hint listen to the into, it's an acoustic Guitar. Live Jimmy would use his electric) the live very early concert footage has been dubbed in as have the effects. Whoever put it together did a great job.
Ramble was a term used as a slang for someone who would move on, not settling or wanting roots anywhere.
Beat Club was a German TV show aired each week from the mid 60's to around the mid 70's. Usually had Live Bands with new albums featured. They'd play a short set of a few songs. If you were a major act trying to make it in Germany, getting on the show would be a huge help.

Interesting thing about the Zeppelin show here was it was to fill a contract left over from the Yardbirds. That's why it was being filmed. Little did they know then how big Zep would be in the future. At first the fans were a bit ticked off. Until the band played and kicked it !

As others have mentioned, this song was originally written by Anne Bredon and was originally recorded by American folk singer Joan Baez. This song is from their first album and is one of the first songs Jimmy and Robert bonded over. When Jimmy first met Robert, he invited him over to see if their personalities and musical interests would mix. When Jimmy played Joan Baez's recording of this and told Robert he planned to turn it more heavy/hard rock, Robert was immediately on board. This is actually the studio cut that they're lip syncing to. When you listen to it again, at one point, you'll hear almost an echo of Robert yelling "...can hear it calling me" which is what he does later in the song. This is a bit of vocal bleed through and was left in. Jimmy didn't mind keeping "mistakes" in the finished product because it added to the vibe.

Henrietta, thank you always for your knowledge and insights. I like your reactions, interpretations and explanations and it seems that in this space and time the two of us meet at an unexpected point, coming from quite opposite directions, me (born 1967) having grown up with like Led Zep, Stevie Ray Vaughan, generally more the blues-rock-hard rock genre and just now starting taking really notice of hip hop (of course I knew it was around like in the radio, and some homies listened to eminem or run dmc or other 90ies hip hop stuff, but I never really got into that) since recently I discovered Tom Macdonald and Ez Mil (and the whole "reactions" thing going on in youtube), and all of a sudden I really enjoy it (and you and other good reactors play an important role in me getting able to enjoy it, so thank you for that!) - while, with you it seems you drive in the opposite direction...

This is a heavy-duty arrangement of a bluesy folksong called "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You". I first heard it performed (with folk guitar) by singer Joan Baez. --don

Beat Club was a German TV show that showcased lots of new and upcoming bands from all over Europe in the early 70"s.
It has its own TH-cam Channel now. There"s hundreds of archive performances including a great early one from Black Sabbath.

I've seen this before, this was their first recorded appearance. It was done on a Danish show. Ramble on is also a term used when we're leaving to explore without any particular destination in mind, just away from where we currently are. I'm often told I have a gypsy soul that likes to ramble. LZ also has a song titled Ramble On. They didn't pay for this. They were guests on a show in Denmark. It was late 1968 or early 1969.

The road is calling him to Ramble. He's a drifter, without roots. He's a lover, he's a back door man (someone who runs out the back when the husband comes in the front door). These are all motifs from the American blues canon that talked about life in the black community after emancipation. Robert Johnson, Leadbelly, Blind Lemon Jefferson, and Big Bill Broonzie were some of the progenitors of the blues and it expression of what the black man faced in his daily existence. This music was very popular in England in the late 50's and early 60's and many blues oriented bands formed and became world famous. The bands (Yardbirds, John Mayall, Jethro Tull, Eric Clapton, Fleetwood Mac with Peter Green, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin) ripped off these black artists by not always acknowledging that they were lifting not only the music but the lyrics as well. Zep was probably the worst offender. But there's a silver lining. Because of the racism that existed in the 50s and 60s the music of the black man was frowned upon by the white majority. But if white people played the music it eventually became cool to like it. These white American kids then discovered that black Americans gave birth to this music and that the British kids were not the originators. In the late 60's and 70's these black artists began to see interest in their work and they were able to make a buck off of their record sales and concerts that were populated by mostly a white audience. So by ripping off black blues artists these English kids actually gave the blues musicians the opportunity to make a living through their art. Otherwise these guys would have been washing dishes for a living. that's what happened to Professor Longhair. A New Orleans artist who wrote some hits in the early 50's then drifted into obscurity. Around 1970 a fan of his discovered him washing dishes in a restaurant off Bourbon St. and organized a come-back concert. From this resurfacing of the Professor events led to the formation of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival which still goes on to this day and honors Professor Longhair for his work in keeping the New Orleans musical tradition alive. But, I digress. PS I've watched a few Tom MacD vids you reacted to, and.... I like it! (to quote my boy, r Diss. Keep up the good work)

Back in the 80's an FM Rock DJ named Mike Harrison was playing a 70's interview of Page, and after Page mentioned this song, the DJ played the first verse of the Joan Baez version, then segued into the intro of the Zep version... It was even the same tempo.
Amazing what they did with this song! 🤘🔥💕
