  • Did you know that Illinois is home to many millionaires and billionaires? Even the governor is a billionaire. It's true. Illinois is home to some of the richest communities in the country, particularly, out in the suburbs. The rich people want to be close to Chicago, but they want to live away from the crime and air pollution, so they head out to the 'burbs. But which ones? Where is all the money in the Chicagoland area? In this video, we go over the ten richest Chicago suburbs and discuss their median household income, home values and other stats.

I live in HP neighborhood next to Glencoe and Winnetka ..... the best part of living in the north shore is being in a bubble , the lake is Amazing, the homes are beautiful with each having such unique architectural history..... I have been many places in the US and this is by far one the nicest areas.... I think the intelligence of the people that reside here is also something worth valuing

Interesting, usually Kenilworth is the wealthiest in IL. But it does bounce along the North Shore Four; Wilmette, Winnetka, Glencoe, and Kenilworth. Hinsdale is mostly new money snobs and as to why native born are younger is family money that allowed them to buy their homes earlier in life. Bad thing about most of the places you listed is the lots are so small. I prefer to live out in Barrington and have some land for quiet.

I work with many foreign born people in the IT industry. One theory I have for why foreign born population is older than native in these wealthy suburbs is culture. Many Asian and Indian cultures have multiple generations living in the same house. Many are well educated and have good paying jobs to begin with but with help from parents and grandparents are all the more able to afford $1mil homes. I personally know of several co-workers in which husband and wife both have good 6-figure salaries. They work while their parents watch the grandkids. The second theory is spending / saving lifestyle. Despite current thoughts, many immigrants have been able to and still can live the American dream. Many work very hard and make great financial sacrifice while saving money over the years. Quite a few have owned their own businesses. They may not have started out with much but over time this put them in a position to finally afford the dream home later in life.

The only thing she said that I didn’t agree with was that the people who didn’t have degrees that are rich must’ve “inherited” their fortune & they don’t realize how fortunate they are. There are a ton of millionaires now who don’t have a formal degree, but they capitalized off of their skillset & turned it into a full functioning & successful business.

Being from the south side and burbs it felt a little strange to be headed out to Wheaton to look at a car. This was late 70's. He was a friend of my friends father who was a Korean War vet and had served together at some point because he was Army. So off we went. Nice car with a little rust on top but other than that very good to mint. The cost was to get it out of the driveway! We came with a battery and after putting some gas in it and starter fluid it ran like a champ. The owner was a former Air Force Officer who had the car while stationed in Hawaii and mostly drove it there. It had real low mileage. I could hardly believe but we rolled out of there basically with a new car though it was about ten years old. Up until this time I had thought all rich people were snobs and uptight with their money. Turns out the guy was much like we were. Cool! Got that sucker home and sanded the top of the car and painted that a flat black. 1969 Chevelle!!!

the immigrant residents being older than native born in hinsdale likely has to do with the large asian specifically indian immigration wave to the area in the 80s and 90s, not to make a racial stereotype come true but i do live in a town next to hinsdale and there are a lot of indian americans who are doctors or who have high paying tech jobs who live in hinsdale who are around my parents age (mid-late 50s) and with children around my age (mid 20s)

For the record, I am in IT and have worked with and hire many people from India. I do see a high percentage living in multi-generational homes with parents, etc. I would contend its common enough that I don't think anyone would take offense.

It’s based on income for the year they are filling out the census. They are probably retired and had plenty of money to pay their expenses out of their savings and checking accounts for that year. They probably sold no investments that would show income. So, their income was probably only social security, stock dividends, and savings interest. Or some may be live in maids residing in a guest house. In other words they are not living below the poverty line.

That’s crazy, I know because I live, or I lived in Highland Park, but I also grew up in Lake Geneva Wisconsin which also has some of the wealthiest people who vacation in Wisconsin from Chicago, billionaires homes, Highland Park is pretty nice as well, you have just regular people as well as millionaires. My friend who lives in a house in Highland Park near the high school has lawns like putting greens, they have a private jet, they own a place in Beavercreek, but it’s also pretty down such a diverse and wealthy suburb. I didn’t realize a five bedroom house was a mansion and Met. I know it’s a big house probably 4000 or 5000 ft.² or more, but usually the ones in Lake Forest are the ones I consider mansions because they might have 10 bedrooms, dozens of rooms, a house that you can get lost in probably close to 20,000 ft.² and the backyard twice the size of a football field is usually what I consider a mansion.

I’ve never even heard of western Springs. And I didn’t realize making $130,000 a year was that much money. I was making close to that much money in the 90s and I was living in the city, but I was still renting becauseI didn’t care about owning a home or a car so I guess it’s how much do you really want to spend and how much do you want to be owned by your possessions.

I think the immigrant population tends to be older because, just like the locals, they take time to prepare for their academic and professional future while still living in their home country. They study well and tend to achieve good academic results in order to prepare themselves to migrate to another country. Since the United States has strict immigration laws, they need to meet all the requirements before moving. Not to mention, the competitiveness of highly qualified jobs in the US is another challenge they have to face, which contributes to the immigrant population being older compared to the local population that follows the natural process of professional preparation and usually doesn't face language barriers.

Immigrant population is older because most of the time they come to the US and need to build their wealth from zero. They have students loans and usually no or little financial help from their families. Therefore it takes them longer to get to the point where they can afford living in those communities. Whereas, American born people will often have some financial help from their parents, therefore lower student loans, a place to live while in college etc. Less debt means they can build wealth sooner.

Years ago I heard that the wealthiest area in Illinois was around Dwight, IL. That was not so much because of the people that resided in the city, but rather because of the excellent farm land and many wealthy farmer landowners. That was in the 1940s thru the 2970s. All those 'burbs mentioned from the north shore, Lake Bluff, Lake Forest, Glencoe, Wilmette, Winnetka. The sad thing about them is they have very few places to actually have fun. The few restaurants you find are pretty low key. You don't find bars in these towns. That is not to say the residents don't like to party. But when they do, they head to a town on the lake called Highwood, which is an abnormality. Yes, it is expensive compared to the rest of Chicagoland. However, it was settled by Italian immigrants and it still reflects that. Lots of good restaurants and bars, even a few playhouses.

Rents in much of McHenry County have been going up; gentrification is happening. If you're poor and can't afford to live nearby, and have inadequate transportation, God help you. Sad to say, but I shall be leaving Algonquin. Two days ago a property manager opened the trunk of his car, pulled out a handgun, what appeared to be a Glock or some other semi-auto pistol. The incident was, I stood 20 -30 feet away, was verbally informing him of the leaky roof and black mould due to comromised and very evident wet insulation. I am documenting this incident because it affects more individuals, including other tenants, as well as at least three children, none of them my own. I didn't report the incident to authorities. I would rather put as much distance between me and the offender as possible.
Working class families are stressed. Last week police found a mother & stepfather dead. They located the person of interest who had fled to rural Wisconsin, not far from Kenosha. I'm not waiting around for more unrest or violence.
Thank you for listening, and Merry Christmas.

It's good to know that Race Bannon hails from Winnetka. Maybe his family still owns property there. Might spot Jonny in the neighborhood.

i've lived in western springs my whole life and it still absolutely blows my mind to hear the median household income even tho i've been watching houses around me get torn down and mansions getting built my whole life. my parents make around $80,000, with my dad working 2 jobs and my mom working 1, while plenty of other familes in this town make $150,000+ with the dad just working 1 job. i live on the main road that runs through town where *surpise* the houses are cheaper and seen as less desirable to the rich young families who keep moving here. i'm almost 24, my 26 year old brother and i still live at home because we just cannot afford to move out, my parents have been in this house for nearly 30 years and have tried selling several times we even added on a few rooms in 2004 and still no one wants it. it's a normal 2 story house too lol. the income inequality even in individual chicago suburbs is crazy

lol hinsdale is right next to us, we're a dividing line between cook and dupage, but western springs has basically just become hinsdale lite in the last 25 years

Well, Kenilworth seems to be a glaring error lots are huge houses are huge, and a lot of old money. Oh and most of them are tighter than, well tight anyhow.

Not an error. I consider a community of 2500 to be more of an enclave than a true suburb, so I only looked at those with over 5000 residents.

Please make an Apple to Apple comparison. Texas is a state and not a city and comparing Chicago with Texas is like comparing an Iphone with land-phone. Like where in Texas ? Austin, Texas is definitely not cheap. Chicago and its suburbs are pretty cheap and affordable compared to New York, LA, San Francisco, Austin, Miami, etc. If you don't understand anything - please use google.
