    In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. This is seen when quickly switching between sonar, downscan, chart, and split screens th-cam.com/users/postUgkxeAxH15LxhjGlg5-CRYqjTGTEH0tbY4vk recommend The Hook units will show some lag on button pushes and screen switching. The big ticket item though is maps. If you install a mapping card such as Navionics or the free C-Map Genesis which has a lot of map detail, then moving around the map with the cursor or when running down the lake can lag significantly on the Hook units, but is seamless with the TI units.

    Can the unit updates be downloaded onto navionics card?
    Or do i need a dedicated micro card for updates

    • @sonarangler
      @sonarangler  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Matthew,
      Updates to the device software should be placed on a separate card. In some of the fine print with Navionics, it indicates that placing other data on their card may disable it (clearly undesirable). I keep an extra micro SD card in my drybox that I use to back up my unit monthly--and if software updates are available, I download them to that card to avoid any challenges from Navionics.
      I hope this helps... Cheers, Capt. John

    Does the unit always show a Navionics option even where there is no card installed? I have the Hook Reveal where I previously used a Navionics card. I did a factory reset on the unit, but it still shows Navionics as a chart option and it shows the card in the "About" screen as if the card was baked into the machine. Just wondering if this is normal behavior. Unfortunately, I have been unable to reach anyone from Lowrance for help via phone or email since Brunswick was hacked with randsomware. Thanks.

    Great vid! Question.. when I installed my card and I got the message pop up about changing map data I accept but it don’t show any detail for 1foot depth contours. Am I missing something? Or did they send me a bad chart?

      Hi Gabe, thanks for the question... After you have selected to use the Navionics charts, press Menu, then Chart Options, then View, then SonarChart. This should enable the 1-foot contours. I hope this helps. Cheers! Capt. John

    Thanks for the info. A question if I may, do you have to leave the sd card inserted all the time to get the charts or is the information transferred into the Lowrance memory and can the card then be removed ?

    • @sonarangler
      @sonarangler  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a popular question...the short answer is that the Navionics SD card must remain in the unit for their charts to display. The longer explanation is that if the SD card could be removed, it could be placed in someone else's chart plotter, which renders the single-use license unenforceable (i.e. Garmin/Navionics would lose revenue). Also, the size of the chart data files on the SD card are quite large--far more than the amount of internal memory in current chart plotters. So, the easy way to remedy the internal memory shortfall is to allow the chart plotter to "page in" the portion of the chart data needed only when it is relevant to your current GPS location and zoom setting.
      Thanks for asking; I hope this helps!
      Cheers,
      Capt. John

      @@sonarangler Thanks for the info, its just what I was looking for. It brings me to another question, I use Raymarine dragonfly pro 5 with only 1 card slot. In the dragonfly instructions it mentions several times the dangers of overwriting any info onto the card that holds the chart but its not clear to me how you 'collect' any sonar surveys you might do in order to upload to the Navionics website. Would you store them on Navionics card for future upload ? Hope this makes sense.

    • @sonarangler
      @sonarangler  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BEN10TO10 Your question makes perfect sense. Placement of the Micro SD card slot on that device is tricky (they hid it in the back of the device)... I referenced the Raymarine Operator Guide just to confirm; this is an excerpt from their document:
      9.17 Sonar logging When using compatible Navionics® cartography you can share sonar information using Navionics® SonarCharts™. The Sonar Logging function allows logging of depth and position data to a compatible Navionics® chart card. The saved data can then be uploaded to the Navionics® website to help improve the contour detail of SonarCharts on your MFD. Refer to the Navionics® website for instructions on how to upload your sonar logs.
      I hope this helps...Cheers!

      For the Lowrance 12TS, you'll need to purchase the Lowrance-specific Navionics card; the ones labeled for Garmin will not work on Lowrance units.

    Thank you for sharing. Very simple.
    Question: Is there a specific card that will also have Artificial Reefs loaded onto it, or a lowrance card similar to this? My main issue is while navigating understanding the depths ahead of me instead of just below.

    • @sonarangler
      @sonarangler  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi CJ, A great question with an admittedly not-so-great response... I'm not sure if there is a Navionics competitor that may have something with what you're looking for, but I can say for Navionics that many artificial reefs are captured on their charts (shown as "wrecks"). They use two different icons: (1) an icon that looks like a sinking ship, and (2) an icon that is shaped like a football. I just looked these up on Lowrance Insight Planner software (using Navionics as my chart source) and a good example is shown at the West Pass of Apalachicola Bay (near the southernmost point) on the coast of the Florida panhandle. I recommend keeping your electronic charts as current as possible so that you pick up new markings as they are crowd sourced constantly. I hope this helps. Cheers, Capt. John

    Hi mate , just wondering if you can help , I’m new to all this , I just bought a new boat with a Lawrence elite fs7, do I need a navionics card or is a normal sd card ok? Is the difference just more detailed charts ? Thanks in advance

    • @sonarangler
      @sonarangler  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Eeddiiee,
      The default Lowrance charts do not approach the level of detail available in Navionics. If you're an avid angler, you'll likely want additional detail to help identify candidate fishing spots and spend far less time searching for fish, and more time catching them. A "normal" SD card (I'm assuming you mean a blank card) will allow you to capture screen images and store backups of your routes, trails and waypoints. Navionics provides a number of additional options (that will appear when their chip is installed) for customizing your charts that the default Lowrance set does not have.
      I hope this helps,
      Capt. John

    Once I purchase the Navionics chip do I have to pay a yearly fee to Navionics for the chip to keep working?

    • @sonarangler
      @sonarangler  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To receive chart updates and use the advanced features, yes, you must pay a yearly fee. If all you need is a good "static" chart for a particular area, the charts will continue to work (without updates) even if you don't pay the annual fee. I hope this helps. Cheers, Capt. John

    Do you have to keep the Navionics card in the unit for it to work or do you download the card to the unit and then remove the card?

    • @sonarangler
      @sonarangler  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Navionics card must remain in the unit to function properly. Note that if you use a separate SD card to load waypoints into the unit, you can remove that card when the "Import" function is complete. So, if you have a unit with only one card slot, you would (1) remove the Navionics card, (2) insert the card with waypoints to be imported, (3) Import the waypoints, (4) remove the waypoint SD card, and (5) re-insert the Navionics card. Following this process will ensure that your imported waypoints will appear on your Navionics charts. I hope this helps... Cheers, Capt. John

    Wish this actually worked on my unit. If anybody can HELP???... since Navionics itself offers NO useful guidance on their products. I have a Lowrance Elite ti 2016 unit recently purchased used. I just purchased the US-Canada card and, as far as I could tell, successfully completed updates and registration. So psyched to see it in action... I hit the water and all I got was blue for water and brown for land... that's it.... NO COUNTOUR!... I didn't spend $200 for that - since I can see the land with my eyes. I'm pulling my hair out and frustrated as hell with the unit and the card. CAN ANYBODY ADVISE or tell me what's going on here?... Or point me in the direction of some good resources??...
