Ok , fantastic educational piece here!! Watching your screen as you ACTUALLY motor around is so useful! Better than watching 50 videos of guys running through "demo mode" sitting in a shop or garage. Your video really clarified so things and taught new a bunch of new stuff as well. Understanding what a thermocline looks like is amazingly helpful.
You probably dont care but does someone know of a way to log back into an Instagram account..? I was dumb forgot my login password. I would love any tricks you can offer me!
@Cameron James Thanks for your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm in the hacking process atm. Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
Very nice video. Your cone models were very effective at describing the sonar propogation. You should include this video with every Lorance unit. When I purchased my Elite Ti, I was overwhelmed with all the settings.
Fantastic video! Purchased a new 2022 bass boat summer 2021 with Lowrance Elite Fs7 at bow and console. Moved console Fs7 up to bow so I have 2 at bow & purchased FS9 for console. Been out a lot this summer learning the units. The side & down scan are new to me, so all your info was a great help. They are great units. Also have the active target transducer, it is awesome! Thanks again for the very informative & helpful video.
In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. This is seen when quickly switching between sonar, downscan, chart, and split screens th-cam.com/users/postUgkxeAxH15LxhjGlg5-CRYqjTGTEH0tbY4vk recommend The Hook units will show some lag on button pushes and screen switching. The big ticket item though is maps. If you install a mapping card such as Navionics or the free C-Map Genesis which has a lot of map detail, then moving around the map with the cursor or when running down the lake can lag significantly on the Hook units, but is seamless with the TI units.
Jacob, you are the MAN. Can I fish with you sometime? You can make money just doing this with individual anglers for $300-500, basically a chartered electronics trip. Keep the videos coming!!
Jacob, how about a video ALL about the Hook2 4x simple model. The simplest one you'll have. A video that actually shows how to use it, the different displays, what they mean and how to get to them. In other words, all you can and need to know on how to operate the Hook2 4x, from turning it on, all the way through all screens and functions, to how to turn it off.
The dark area that is in the middle of the screen is not the water column and it doesn’t make any sense to demonstrate what the dark area in the middle of the screen is by folding a piece of paper or holding the binding of a book or magazine or pamphlet upside down. A transducer scans the same with any digital fish finder, wether it be side scan, down imagining, side imaging, or any other comparable device that scans anything. It scans where it is pointing. In this video he mentions the cone shape of down scan, that is the way that particular transducer is made and programmed to function, very good demonstration with the cone, probably very accurate. Side scan is obviously newer technology and I agree that it’s a thinner more precise use of sonar technology with similar concepts of down scan (or traditional digital fish finder transducers). Again, a very informative accurate use of the visual aid. Side scan works the same as down scan (or any other scanning device). It doesn’t hit the ground and then scan, the image starts from the transducer and scans immediately within its range AND everything in between the transducer and the ground, it doesn’t scan water and portray that water column as an image to the angler, the transducer is already underwater. These people act like it’s shooting a high frequency laser beam up to a satellite orbiting mars and then back down through the atmosphere through the water and down to the bottom of the lake. It’s doesn’t. It’s a 4000 dollar piece of equipment with most of the tech in the transducer itself. It needs to be tuned to even out the image so the angler can clearly see in every direction. Your welcome and thank you. With such a wide range that SIDE (starboard AND port side) scan produces (300ft PER SIDE) and a strong use of existing technology it’s very logical to think that the technology that is used in side scan may be too strong directly below and is unable to relay accurate clear images of what it is scanning. It seems that the technology needs to be tuned, like contrast on a screen only further into the technology of it. It needs to come from the programmers for Lowrance. Give more power to the transducer to scan further to the sides of the boat and less power to the (dark area) directly under the boat. Lowrance, kick this technology into high gear and reach out 300ft forward scan technology. You’ll have 180 degree view out to 300ft or longer in the front and both sides from the front of the boat. Top anglers will be able to utilize this transducer capable technology mounted from the bow of the boat and the stern, giving competitive fisherman 300+ degrees of the top sonar Lowrance has to offer. It’s all DSI.
Greetings, thank you so much for this Video and your time and efforts, it is greatly appreciated. I’m new to fishing, specifically kayak fishing. Waiting for a hook2 5 with triple shot transducer to arrive to install on my kayak. I’m not sure if this model and tech has all ready been done on a video in past, even how much of this newer model and tech can transfer to it. If it hasn’t, can you please do one on that model and tech? After some seasons, I’m sure I’ll upgrade to these with live scan and such. Thanks again. I think you might have a lifelong Lowrance customer here. 👍
Wow, thank you. I’ll be watching this again and again when my hook comes. Question> will I be able to do any learning on it besides readying, if I’m not on a lake? Thanks
At 28:07 it clearly shows you’re using a structure scan 3D transducer (S3D-63.1.273). I also notice you’re scanning at 800 khz which is currently not available on structurescan 3D? Is this an update we can expect to see in the coming weeks??
Hi. I have a Elite ti2. I mainly use the downscan for finding 100ft wrecks and structures to dive and drop a shot line on. The wrecks just show as spikes with no detail. Can you do a video on how to have my downscan set up?
Thank you so much for this video. I have a Suntracker Bass Buggy 18-DLX on order with a Lowrance HDS-9 Live with AI 3-1 transducer. This right here is what I needed to help me understand what I will be seeing on the screen. Kind Regards, William R. Culver Jr.
On side scan, what is the cone angle, or triangle angle? I understander the black center portion is the water column, but is the first bright return the bottom directly under the transducer? Or if you are in 30 ft of water, is it 5 or 10 feet to the left and right?
You said that side/down scan work best when boat is moving. So, if I'm anchored and looking at my bow unit, down imaging is really doing little for me. Is that right? Also, if I'm slowly working along a ledge offshore, is down imaging doing much for me, or do I need to be moving faster, ie. 3-4 mph?
At 30:31, where you started to point out shadows of trees, would that be a large hump you're going over, since the water column went from wide to narrow and back to wide?
What angle is the sidescan "cone" I run a three in one transducer on a small boat with a tiller motor and when the motor is running so that we can drive the left side of the sidescan blurs out. The motor is to the left of the transducer. Thanks for your help
Mr can you tell me how to adjust the midle line when I put it into sideimagine the line that you read the water column how deep it is It is too large almost 1/2 in wide or more Thanks you really appreciated
What is the difference between speed over water and speed over ground? In sonar mode I have the speed over water turned on but just have dash lines no reading, and have no option for SOG in sonar mode?
Unfortunately the cone makes trash look very similar to fish. That fact is easy to see after a big rain that brings water and trash into my cove from drainage ditches.
Different factors need to be taken into consideration, starting from the transducer, therefore its beam's angle, position. In your case we would suggest to try slow down the display scroll speed.
Very disappointed with my new Lowrace HDS Live. You can´t map stuff and use it the same day. I don´t want to use Genesis Live because when you stop it the bottomlines disappear, and the recording is so short. You want to make me upload the dataonline on C-map, so all the people in the world could see it, if not I have to pay. And still I have to wait several days to get my mapping back. Garmin or Hummingbird does not work that way.
Genesis Live needs to be on all the time if you want to view it. It is a long process as there is plenty of data to be imported and worked on. They are called Social Maps because they can be shared.
@@lowrance Yeah, but this is not a correct answer!!!! YOU CAN NOT LOG SONARDATA and save it the same day, AND use it the next day and be privat. You HAVE to upload it, but I don´t want to upload it...I want that lake to be my privat issue!!! Genesis Live only record a certain amount of data, than it´s starting to delete information you recorded in the beginning, to make room for your new data... but I DONT WANT THAT TO HAPPEND!! Stupid! You make more money if people upload their data, that is the ONLY reson you have it this way. Look at Garmin, or Hummingbird. You can record sonardata as much you want, and it stays privat aslong as I want privat. It took you almost A YEAR to answer my question, and the answer is just flying over the problem, like it´s not even there.. Sorry Lowrance, red card!!
I realize this video is a couple years old now. Just want to point out that the illustration using the folded paper is WRONG. The water column is NOT straight up and down but more of a 45 degree angle. If you passed over the center of a 20 foot pole lying on its side on the bottom you would NOT see 10 feet of pole on left side and 10 feet on the right side. Sidescan has dead space in the center DIRECTLY below the boat. Downscan is covering that area. Pass close by a standing tree and you'll notice that the bottom of the tree doesn't show on the screen. It's because it outside the sidescan range.

Speed Over Ground is given by the GPS antenna. You will need a speed transducer to have Speed Through Water.

So a side scan transducer really wouldn't work well on the trolling motor, to much movement ?
It is a personal choise, but yes, in theory, sidescan on a trolling motor does not make much sense as you will be moving it around very often.

How do u Turn fish reveal on and off on down scan
Hi, Mike. On the DownScan screen, go to Menu, More Options, then click Fish Reveal to turn it on or click again to turn it off.
Why don’t you use your fish ID?
We personally prefer not to use it.
We find it confusing ;-)
