By the time Dynasty came out the writing was on the wall. Kiss was merely going through the motions, and following trends instead of focusing on making good rock albums. With each album after Dynasty (Unmasked, The Elder, Creatures of the Night) Kiss became a smaller band living off its past glories, until they finally took the makeup off and became a hair/glam band. The Kiss that I loved was done after the Love Gun tour.
They were so huge they were changing culture itself. I’m sure they were not sure where to go. I love this album and in retrospect I was made for loving you might be their most popular song globally. They have 500 million views of the video on TH-cam. In time it will join the billion view club.
About 5 of these songs are in my top 20 favorite Kiss songs! Dirty livin is my favorite Peter tune. Magic touch is a gem and 1 of Paul's best vocally. Charisma is 1 of my favorite Gene songs and Ace smokes on Dynasty. Hard times is a killer, fun song. I actually like Dynasty more than the previous 3 albums, RARO, Destroyer and LG
Embarrassed to admit I shoplifted this record when I was 13, because there was NO WAY my dad was going to buy me a kiss album. When he caught me with it, I lied and said I borrowed it from my girlfriend. I agree, the album isn't really disco, apart from Dirty Living, but it's very poppy, for sure. I loved I was made for lovin' you, 2,000 Man, Charisma, Magic Touch and Save Your Love. The rest didn't do much for me, but I did love the Bass from Sure Know Something. I heard somewhere that Gene refused to play the bass on the song, so what we hear in the studio was either Paul or Ace... have you heard if this is true?
I've never heard it was because Gene "refused" to play it, though that might be the case, but yes, according to most reports I've seen, Paul plays not only the bass guitar on the song, but also rhythm AND lead guitars.
The best version of 2,000 man was from Kiss MTV unpluggged IMO. The unplugged verison is really the reason I love it. Ace doesn't get enough credit for his voice I feel
Actually, no. Everything I've posted about KISS so far uses their songs, and not one of my KISS videos has been blocked yet. Same with bands like Van Halen, Ratt, and Motley Crue. Now, you may have noticed that I haven't posted anything yet about AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Dio, Led Zeppelin, or Ozzy. That's because those bands are blockers (at least every time I've tried, and from what I hear other people say in their videos). Glad to hear it, btw! I look forward to seeing your videos!
Being real, I would have to give Dynasty a spin before I could comment on it. I was never a fan of it but I also rarely ever heard it. From the snippets I do think I would at least find it enjoyable to hear so I'll have to put it on sometime. As for Unmasked, well I do have a lot of thoughts about that album but I'll save them for that video.
Kiss, being on Casablanca, a disco-driven label, was contractually obligated to do one disco song in the contract they were under. Paul Stanley set out to fulfill that with "I Was Made for Lovin' You". He writes about that in his first book. Vini Poncia was brought in to satisfy Peter Criss. Vini was the producer of Peter's solo album. Funny, Poncia didn't use Peter on Dynasty as he felt he wasn't able to make it on this album. You are correct that they were going for a different sound, it was due to the market, and contractual obligations.
Kiss was also my first official Kiss album. Will always be my favorite. You are spot on with your comments. Loved Charisma and Sure Know Something as favorites besides I was Made… Excellent and complete album. Would be my top album in my ranking.
"I Was Made For Loving You" and "I Was Made For Dancin" by Leif Garrett.... Same thing. Also the extended ten minute version of "Dirty Livin" was meant for the disco floor wearing the tight leather pants and Travolta point. ☝️ 🕺
"Charisma" (Gene) and "2,000 Man" (Ace) merely four points each, "All Hell´s Breakin´Loose" (Paul, from the album "Lick It Up") five points. Is that just a matter of (bad) taste or does he have a blowup doll of Paul under his bed? I´m just wondering.
Thanks for the reply . Yer I just did an AC/DC review and had all kind of issues so have none if the music in there . Very frustrating after the work / time we spend .
Yes, I saw it! Good stuff 👍. I subscribed to you, also! And yes, I love those guys beyond words, but I sure wish they'd realize we're just trying to celebrate their music and give them some free advertising. Lol
I once heard the notion floated that should Dynasty have been a double album there would have been no need for Unmasked. There is some sense in-that if the Dynasty tour was extended into 1980 for a lost cities (secondary market) tour, and then KISS released an Alive 3 album for Christmas '80. Perhaps the fall-out in Kiss Fandom about the Unmasked album and the band's absence from touring North America for almost three years would have never happened. It's food for thought anyway. Ezrin in his pre-Pink Floyd The Wall period would have been a good choice to produce Dynasty.
Great review! Totally dig dynasty, I was 5 when it came out! I remember my older brother getting it and not being into it! He gave it to me! I was lucky enough to have seen a show on the dynasty tour! The Omni in Atlanta Georgia! I was blown away and so were my ears lol! I still dig this album a lot! Poster up in my kiss room! I’d give it 4 stars!
I became a Kiss fan in early 77 at 5 years old and after Kiss decided to put out solo albums, which I disliked, Dynasty was a breath of fresh air. Easily 1 of my favorite albums . Definitely in my top 3. I love everything on that album. The songs are very well written and it's my favorite Kiss album vocally. All 4 shine. Anton Fig played like Peter on a few songs that I couldn't tell it was another drummer in 1979 but I heard Save your love and I knew something was up. Definitely not a disco album. People who heard I was made for loving you and never bought the album claimed Dynasty was disco . From day 1 I laughed about that. If anything, Stutter 78 off Double platinum is more disco than anything off Dynasty. Nice review definitely enjoyed it!
Dirty Livin had a full length album side for Dance halls and was a huge hit in Mexico I like it and love the entire album As for unmasked Naked City is my 5 star choice
I believe it was the success of the solo albums that determined the amount of songs each member got on this album. Peter's album bombed so he got one song, Gene's did marginally better so he got two songs etc. "I Was Made For Lovin" You" and "Dirty Livin" were both regarded as dance tracks because they were often played in dance clubs, just as the Def Leppard song "Pure Some Sugar..." was, or is, regarded as a stripper song, because it was often played at strip clubs. Paul Stanley admits to writing "I Was Made..." after spending time at Studio 54, because he wanted to replicate what was being played in dance clubs at the time. People that refer to it as a "disco" song are really just showing us how little they really know about music, but that's okay, I understand why they might be confused. A fair review I think, except for the Peter song, but hey, we all like what we like right?
I definitely think Ace was getting extra songs because of the solo album success, but with Gene I've always assumed that by this time it was more a case of him being too busy with other crap to concentrate much on writing for KISS. Thanks again for watching!
Brilliant production and playing Peter played on dirty living and should have done the whole album. POncia stabbed him in the back! 3 of Kiss best albums! The Elder being brilliant!
Dirty Livin’ is a very good song … surprised u were so hard on it. I’d actually take it over. X-ray eyes, Save your Love & Hard times. Agree with ur overall score tho (4 stars) and ur take on Charisma, that song is bad ass!
Thanks for watching, Steve! Yeah, Dirty Livin' just never did a thing for me for whatever reason. I definitely loved it every time they put a Peter song on the albums, I just didn't care for them sometimes.
Dynasty is a great record , I don't dislike any of the songs. Charisma has always been my favourite , I Was Made For Lovin' You , Sure Know Something and Dirty Livin' are also great.
1979. Motorhead, 'Overkill' AC/DC, 'Highway to Hell' Scorpions, 'Lovedrive' Thin Lizzy, 'Black Rose' Van Halen, 'Van Halen II' Judas Priest, 'Unleashed in the East' Riot, 'Narita' Whitesnake, ‘Lovehunter’ Led Zeppelin, 'In Through the Out Door' Motorhead, 'Bomber' These albums came out in 1979.. If you post this album in 1978 it's even at a bigger disadvantage compared to those albums.
Why the he** do they do this? When the music is great - the lyrics suck or vice versa. I will admit. When I first heard this album, at the age of 10, as a drummer I fell in love with this. Charisma is a killer tune as well as Save Your Love and Hard Times. I skipped over Sure Know Something on first listen. The studio track, except for the awesome 😎 bass guitar riff, is boring. But damn - The Unplugged version kicks ass. The vocal by Paul Stanley, nearly 15 years later, was incredible and the crowd participating, in time, was magic. Magic Touch is also one of favorites and Dirty Livin is 😭😳🤬🤮
Yeah, it can be a hard adjustment for some people. I've always been a big fan. But I get why it's a little more challenging for some. Definitely a little different than what we'd grown accustomed to.
I love this album. This one and rock and roll over Are my two favorite Kiss albums. Funny enough This is my favorite Kiss album cover. And rock and roll over is probably my least favorite Kiss album cover (Of the original kiss lineup).
I be came a Kiss fan in the early 90s and I'm 58😮 I know! I love them ,not all but mostly. If Kiss is Disco Metallica is blue grass. My favourite album is Revenge. I'm sceptical about the 90s other albums and 2000s. Great video.
I first owned this on 8-track, with a drastically different track order. Kicked off with 2,000 Man and Magic Touch, so it seemed like a much more rocking album vs the disco single starting things off. 🪩
I like every track on this album. I even like Dirty Livin.
Dirty livin. That is a song that would get anyone dancing.
By the time Dynasty came out the writing was on the wall. Kiss was merely going through the motions, and following trends instead of focusing on making good rock albums. You know, it’s almost like I don’t have to do my own channel with KISS reviews. But I’m gonna do it anyway
Haha. Awesome 👍
I here you . If we were giving them crap I’d understand , anyway I guess it’s a reflection of the times we live in .
They were so huge they were changing culture itself. I’m sure they were not sure where to go. I love this album and in retrospect I was made for loving you might be their most popular song globally. They have 500 million views of the video on TH-cam. In time it will join the billion view club.

Just wondering if you’ve had any copyright issues with Kiss stuff? I’m looking at doing some vids myself .
Actually, no. Everything I've posted about KISS so far uses their songs, and not one of my KISS videos has been blocked yet.

It should be posted right after I get out of rehab (for having to sit through it a few times).
He said it..a three album slide. Grabbing at trends. Lost focus. Only song I liked on Dynasty was 2000 Man..thanks Ace.

It's definitely a blowup Paul. I keep it right next to the one if your mom.
Thanks for the reply . Yer I just did an AC/DC review and had all kind of issues so have none if the music in there . Very frustrating after the work / time we spend .
Love your humour btw. Subscribed .
Yes, I saw it! Good stuff 👍. I subscribed to you, also!
And yes, I love those guys beyond words, but I sure wish they'd realize we're just trying to celebrate their music and give them some free advertising. Lol
Hey I have that T shirt, actually 2 of that one. Cool review by you (thumbs up). It's not a great album but it's a solid album
I once heard the notion floated that should Dynasty have been a double album there would have been no need for Unmasked. Boy, yeah. That might have been a really different time had it gone down like that instead.
Dynasty is one of the classics albums of KISS

Naked City rules
3 5stars, Charisma, Magic Touch and Save Your Love. All other songs 3-4stars! Really good album

I have always loved Dynasty too.
1979. Motorhead, 'Overkill'
AC/DC, 'Highway to Hell'
Scorpions, 'Lovedrive'
Thin Lizzy, 'Black Rose'
Van Halen, 'Van Halen II'
Judas Priest, 'Unleashed in the East'
Riot, 'Narita'
Whitesnake, ‘Lovehunter’
Led Zeppelin, 'In Through the Out Door'
Motorhead, 'Bomber'
These albums came out in 1979.. If you post this album in 1978 it's even at a bigger disadvantage compared to those albums.
KIss all day long , love Priest Scorps lizzy...the rest not so much.
Also concur with Save Your Love great solo!!!!
Never too old to disco
i love this album top three for me
You right!!! IT’S NOT A DISCO ALBUM!!! This album has great songs if Eddie Kramer or Ezrin had produced it sonically it would have sounded better!!!!
It's a good album as is

I like this album.
Dynasty is a banger.
I love this album.
This one and rock and roll over
Are my two favorite Kiss albums.
Funny enough
This is my favorite Kiss album cover.
And rock and roll over is probably my least favorite Kiss album cover
(Of the original kiss lineup).
Hmmm. That IS interesting.
how come the stones never took heat for producing a disco sounding song during this same time period. have you heard “miss you”?
Miss You is R & B, not disco.
@@atlasking6110 “miss you” is R&B like “i was made for loving you” is hard rock.
Magic Touch is the best song on this album.
It IS a GREAT song.
dynasty fell at #4 in my personal ranking.
The drum beats per minute sounds kind of disco, but Kiss sounds nothing like ABBA or The Bee Gees
I be came a Kiss fan in the early 90s and I'm 58😮 I know! I love them ,not all but mostly. If Kiss is Disco Metallica is blue grass. My favourite album is Revenge. I'm sceptical about the 90s other albums and 2000s. Great video.
Thanks for watching and welcome aboard! Always happy to meet another fan!
Besides Hard Times, Dirty Living and 2000 Man, Dynasty is garbage...
2000 man is my least favourite on the album and of all ace kiss songs.
I first owned this on 8-track, with a drastically different track order. Kicked off with 2,000 Man and Magic Touch, so it seemed like a much more rocking album vs the disco single starting things off. 🪩
I think I remember that other sequence. But I started with the vinyl, so I could never get used to it.
Abba is awesome
