I just discovered this and am in awe. It's been covered by many artists, but this version is my favorite. ugh beautiful poet imagery, tim you get to the last line, which is chilling. One of the greatest songs and covers ever.
JD. Super Man. Great great banjo player, band leader, innovator, selector of songs. What a contribution he has made to all our lives. And a gentleman too boot.
I think this group of musicians at this point in there lives were supposed to be playing together and did some of there best work !!! This was The New Souths best line up in my opinion , can still get chills listening to there work together sometimes .
Greatest Bluegrass Band of all time! The talent in that band was simply beyond belief and they were just approaching their prime. Tony Rice had the perfect voice for this music....just so pure and yet so earthy. It resonated of Kentucky music of forty years ago.
The 0044 album changed my life the first time I heard it. If I ever feel I'm getting bored of playing music I just give it a listen and it totally re energizes me. Best band of all time.
One of the classic songs. Written by U. Utah Phillips, Golden Voice of the Great Southwest, itinerant, member of the IWW, the most most feared and vigilant union in American history and is actually very much alive. I always hoped that Phillips got his due share of royalties from all the musicians who sang and recorded this song.
I used to call this "J D Crowe & The Magic Band." Even the way they moved on stage was amazing. What a privilege to have seen them many times.

I heard this song at a bluegrass jam. Wow. The lyrics just blew me away. Whoever wrote this song felt some real heartache.
Bruce "Utah" Phillips
Im privileged to have met everyone on that stage
I’m really jealous
Such an amazing abundance of talent!

This is just simply perfection and soul satisfying. I am so glad I heard them in person; I am a fortunate person.
Although the sound is horrible, it's still my favorite version
I can't believe how amazing this is.

JD is actually the one that kicked off Rock Salt and Nails on the 0044 album.
I thought Young recorded his version in 1969?
flat and Scruggs,in 1966 put it out I was in a blue Grass band,we did it 100s of times back then.
Written 1961, by folk singer Utah Phillips Bruce Phillips, he also recorded it...secondhandsongs.com/work/34669
Shame they only recorded one album while they were together. Has to be one of the best groups that ever performed.
there is a live japan with this group out there if you can find it.
Look how young, especially a Jerry Douglas. Just kids.
I noticed when Keith was with JD never heard him sing this
written by the wonderful Utah Phillips.

Tyler Childress" version has 7.5 million plays and can't hold a candle to this.
At least, Ricky has never had to worry about male pattern baldness.
Songwriter Utah Phillips talks about writing this song: th-cam.com/video/TzSRPxqdtyc/w-d-xo.html
Whew! They would have been much better off with a different stylist. Hahaha
Misspelled Skaggs
