    I think it's funny how you view yourself as an introvert yet you're so well spoken on camera. This video was really helpful hearing a honest "review" on USC as a University. I applied as a transfer student for the Fall 2017 so I'll hear back from them in May with their decision. I am hoping I am accepted into Annenberg so I pursue journalism. Los Angeles as a city can provide SO MANY opportunities to grow in the industry. It's all about networking and making those connections. Always appreciate your videos Annemarie (:

    I totally understand the whole introvert insecurity you talked about (I am a freshman at USC) but that is one reason I love your channel so much!! While I also love watching Katherine and Tasha, I think my college experience here at USC will be most similar to yours in that it seems like with each passing year, you have gotten more comfortable with the USC environment and social circles. While throughout my freshman year here it's been difficult (and a bit exhausting haha) constantly being around extroverted personalities, I think it's very reflective of the environment of any big city, and I think it's important to become comfortable with engaging in a more extroverted mindset as preparation for entering the competitive job market. So while we're some of the lone introverts, I like to think that USC will best prepare us for the reality of how most individuals in our society are (i.e. BIG personalities haha). :)

      Awwwww! I definitely recognize your name and photo from comments, and I'm so glad to hear that you can relate! :) It's so weird to think about how just being introverted will change how you take in and experience things compared to extroverts. But it's good that you recognize that you're introverted. I remember in freshmen year, I would always make excuses for not going out and my friends would think that I didn't like them or would get annoyed with me. Even explaining to your extroverted friends about introvertism can be really important because it's surprising how little some people know about introverted qualities. But yes, I definitely agree that being around extroverted personalities is helpful in general with learning how to better interact with all types of people and will be very helpful for the real world. I guess we can both be grateful to USC for that :) Thanks for leaving comments and being so supportive!

    I'm currently in and I made the wrong decision. I'm in WA but not seattle, a good 40 minutes away. I love seattle and I wish i had applied to UW. I'm from LA so I'm used to "dressing up" and putting in a little more effort than usual. Its been rough being here where I get weird looks from girls because I'm wearing something other than running shorts, a hoodie, and sneakers. Even doing your makeup is putting too much effort or having your hair done. Its strange. As a person of color I've also felt very judged and excluded. It's been a rough couple of month and has made me feel very insecure and bad about myself and being a POC, which isn't what I wanted. I'm moving back to LA after this year and its the best decision I've made in so long. I wish people spoke more about cons they have about their college instead of only pros, thank you for that!

    As a student, you really gotta budget yourself, and in that environment where everyone is chasing the joneses, it would be tough to be around that and not have it impact you in whatever way. I agree that in such an environment it IS hard to make friends with people who are not real upfront or extroverted and as an introvert it makes getting to know people harder.

    Loved the video, Annemarie! Totally feel you on the social struggles you've faced at USC! I go to a pretty 'extroverted' school on the east coast, and it has been hard feeling like I have such a smaller social circle than many of the people here. I can say that looks/appearances are not nearly as important as I felt like they were at home-- I'm from the south, just outside of Atlanta. Seems like different areas of the country tend to value different qualities (e.g. I've met so many NYC people at school and who-you-know seems a lot more important than what-you-wear or how-you-do-your-makeup).

    Personally I don’t think it’s pointless to hear people’s stats and extracurriculars, I honestly think it’s really helpful! I DO think it’s important to make it clear that if you don’t have the grades, scores, extracurriculars that you have, it’s does not mean you shouldn’t apply since college admissions is a completely holistic process. I don’t think you’re bragging if you share your high school career, it’s the complete opposite for me. I think it’s really generous to put your story and process out there and sharing those things does help so people can get an idea of the application process, and even classes or extracurriculars that they might be interested in but didn’t know existed. I think there is so much more of a better effect of sharing rather then keeping it in if you’re comfortable with it. Maybe if you change your mind you can make a part 2. I hope you take it into consideration :)

    This was so, so helpful! I'm only a high school sophomore, but I've started looking into colleges. I am considering USC and UCLA, so it was really nice to get an insider view. It's interesting what you said about the "extrovertedness" of the school and how a lot of girls are really concerned with social standing. I never really thought of that but it makes sense because it's...well, LA. I am definitely more introverted and not really into the whole party scene, so that is something I'll consider, and it's super helpful to know. Thank you for posting this!!!

      Hi! My 9-12 gpa was about 4.2 and my sat was pretty low - 1180. I'm telling you bc I remember wanting to know my chances too but like Anne Marie said it doesn't matter too much. Like I said, I have a pretty low gpa but I have meaningful leadership activities and demonstrated my passion for activism in my essays. Don't stress too much when applying, you'll end up where you need to be and don't get hung up on big name schools. I'm sure you are a wonderful student and any school would be happy to have you. If they don't - it's their loss more than it is yours. Remember that! Good luck ☺️

    i think that (from what ive seen/heard) the social standing+extroverted thing is something that comes with going to an elite college. i go to barnard/columbia and as a low-income + first-gen student from san diego, it was jarring to be surrounded by super rich, smart, outspoken people. which, can be a great thing! (i feel like being surrounded by people like that has taught me to really do things for /me/) but its definitely something to keep in mind when considering schools. apart from a ton of other things obvi, i think hs seniors should make sure that the school they go to has the resources they need to deal with changes like that at the institutional level + at the community/clubs/student level. :))

    I go to ucla and based on your interests and personality you might have really liked it here! The bus-econ degree here seems to get the business students pretty good jobs post graduation at places like Google, Amazon and Deloitte. I was debating on going to usc but I found ucla to be more inclusive of different people from various backgrounds and way less oriented around appearance and social status. It still exists but I've met so many incredible people who are genuine, down to earth and care deeply about societal issues and making the world a better place instead of spending time on the appearance of things and climbing social ladders. I'm sure you're going to do wonderful things regardless of where you went to college and I'm looking forward to more videos xo

    • @robjohnston366
      @robjohnston366 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Sophia Oganesyan . . . Sorry for the response, a year after you posted.... UCLA is indeed very diverse and everyone gets along; therefore, this should imply that the university is predominantly inclusive as a whole. Thus the same should apply for USC. Additionally, there are too many students at both universities to show forth exclusivity: UCLA has 3lK undergrads and 15K grads, totaling 46K students; USC has 20K undergrads and 28K grads, totaling 48K. I would think that there would be an inverse relationship between social exclusivity and the size of a university.
      I'm not sure why Anne Marie would feel that USC has a smaller school vibe. Certainly, the size of UCLA is about two times as large as USC in acreage, 415 to 220, but UCLA is significantly smaller than any of the other UCs and Stanford. (Edit: still not catching onto soft and hard breaks between paragraphs.
      Social standing? I guess that could be anywhere, and perhaps it is a function of a university being in LA particularly wrt people dressing well -- as opposed to NorCal campuses which have more of a grunge style. Likewise, UCLA Is undoubtedly a very extrovert college and the students there are collaborative in their studies and very friendly -- certainly not diffident. There are introvert UCs as in SD and perhaps Irvine and in some ways Cal. So I guess UCLA would be closer to USC in these ways, than it would be to Cal, though the first and the third are sister UC campuses.

      Hey @Roos van Houten, gpas don't always matter nor do test scores. USC admission, believe it or not, is quite diverse in what they're looking for. My gpa was of the typical range and my test scores were no where near the average of Usc. However, I was very involved in high school and did different things to help my community. Just be genuine in your applications and tell your story. Also avoid CollegeConfidential like the plague. Sorry not sorry, that website is trash and will give you a complex reading students talk about all their activities and stats and asking how likely they'll get into x school. JUST BE YOURSELF!

    • @loveablesushi
      @loveablesushi 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Roos van Houten I found CollegeConfidential extremely helpful, but to each their own. No one in my family has ever gone to college in America and College Confidential taught me so much about the application process that I never would've known as an only child and the oldest out of all my closest family friends who were all the first in their family to go to college in America. Coming from the Bay Area as well, known for ruthless high schools, I was unable to get the support structure from peers because everyone talked about stats & etc behind each other's backs which made me feel uncomfortable talking about colleges with them. Also, how do you determine your reach/safety/target schools unless you compare yourself to the average pool of applicants they admit? Yes, there are a variety of factors but unconsciously everyone is comparing themselves to the people around them, or else everyone would be applying to only dream schools and getting in. I understand it sucks to compare yourself to others and can make you feel like a failure; however, maybe it's because I went to such a "unsupportive" high school, but it never phased me. Looking at those threads helped me determine my safety, target, and reach schools, and I'm currently at USC with a full merit scholarship. These are my past experiences and circumstances that made me value some portions of College Confidential (maybe it's changed a lot since I've used it). If you can relate, maybe it'll help you, too. Please don't invalidate my past experiences and I won't invalidate yours.

    Hi! I've been watching your videos for awhile and was so excited to see a college video since I am in high school. I visited USC last April and I loved it. I loved the atmosphere, the campus, the tour guide, etc. However, I am really worried about how I would fit in there if I got accepted and decided to go. I am an extrovert and love social activities and being outspoken but I am definitely not into the whole party/drinking scene nor do I want a bunch of fake friends. I understand that not everyone at USC is like that, like you, as at any school, but I want to go somewhere where even though there is diversity, people share my ideals and are like me? Like where everyone is different and has their own personalities, but everyone has similarities and morals and are like me I guess? not sure if that makes any sense. My point being I don't want to go to a party school, but I loved USC and it would be a dream to go. Any advice? Thanks!

    Because you're out of state the price would be the same between USC and UCLA. But after the 1st year you can become a California resident and pay in-state tuition which would make it half what USC costs. Unless you're going to USC for film school or to play football, UCLA is the better choice. ;)

  • @robjohnston366
    @robjohnston366 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your reasons for choosing USC were really legitimate, and you made the most wise choice for you. But since I'm a UCLA apologist, which means I defend the university any chance I get, I would like to update things to June 27, 2022, more than five years after you uploaded your great video and in particular the things related to what you said about UCLA.
    You stated that UCLA students call themselves 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th years, and something to the effect that many students take five years to graduate. In 2021 and 2022, the ≤ four-year completion rate was/is 81-83%. So the rate has gone up by ~ 5% from 2017.
    Your second negative of UCLA is that it doesn't have a (pure) undergraduate business degree, which is is true. The main offerings it does have are Business Economics, Economics, and Mathematics/Economics, with those who major in the first offering, bizecon, needing ~3.3 gpa in prereq courses to get into the major. It's a good major by itself because it combines economics courses with the department having > 100 upper division course offerings, added to classes the Anderson School of Management (ASM), UCLA's grad-based b-school, offers to undergrads titled _management_ courses.
    It's actually the econ department, though, that has some direct finance-related courses, e.g., those among the eleven 106 A-V courses, and it also has some entrepreneurship classes, along with economic theory, history, etc. Management has accounting for future accountants, financial (modeling) accounting for those wanting finance careers, a few direct finance courses, and some entrepreneurship classes. Some of these follow from the fact that UCLA has minors in Accounting and Entrepreneurship, which anyone can attach. One will see, e.g., bio majors minoring in entrepreneurship and sociology or English majors minoring in accounting.
    Additionally, UCLA students in bizecon, and econ are adding various math majors and minors in combination with their coursework, with the university having nine math offerings. The math department is making its contribution to those who want to enter the various business sectors, with its _Big Data Initiative,_ and making math classes and minors available to Humanities, Social Science, and Life Science majors. Additionally, you'll see students who will choose various majors with Social Data Theory or Data Science Engineering minor, or even doubling in Data Theory. Students are more likely at the moment to add a Statistics major or minor to bizecon or econ, and UCLA has a Specialization in Computing minor which any student can attach. So it's not unusual to see a student major in Business Economics, double or minor in Statistics, and take the Computing specialization. And because of the heavy math background they have, a good number of students will go immediately for MS degrees in Financial Engineering, Data Science, Quant Finance, Quant Econ, Stats, Analytics, etc. The job prospects in business or science for UCLA's quant-based majors is improving yearly because they're well-rounded.
    Among those less quant-based, UCLA has a few marketing-based courses, but if they want to go into that field, they'll major in Communications or something like Sociology and then take lots of internships, similarly for those who want to enter the real-estate field, and there's a very good real-estate club on campus. UCLA also has numerous consulting and investment clubs, and its biggest club on campus is the Undergraduate Business Society (UBS).
    Additionally in the future, you'll see even more students who will major in Business Economics with a Social Data Theory or Data Science Engineering minor, or even double with Data Theory as these three were just added within the last three years.

I'm deciding on which college to attend, and i'm pretty much stuck between a really cheap school and one that I absolutely love but is really expensive. I could go to the one I love for grad school, but I don't know if I'd enjoy going to the cheaper university for four years. It's really big on football and greek life but I'm not really into either! I mean, social life in school is super super difficult for an international student(me). I used to be a very extroverted person but now I am so scared to live through my freshmen year of college. High school definitely changes my personality(kinda bad way) and now I believe I am introverted:( No matter how hard you try to fit in and get involved you are still foreign. As an instate student, and someone who didn't qualify for any financial aid, it made no sense to even think about USC. At ucla, I'd be going to a school that's just as prestigious, in a better area in LA, and yet I'd be spending less than half of what I'd had to spent at USC. Also while USC is a private school it's a big private school, so the faculty to student ratio isn't any better than a big public school like a UC. Tbh USC was my dream when I was a child. But I've fallen in love with ucla as I grew older and after thinking about it objectively, it made no sense for me to NOT attend UCLA

      @dathunderman4 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thfps sndps lol what I meant was the margin wasn't to the point that it's worth spending that much money,
      Imho. It's not equivalent to a small private or liberal arts college, where the ratio can be like 4:1.
      Yeah I think #1 most dangerous college at any point is a big overstatement... where did you see that? I personally love the area, it's right next to Beverly Hills and a couple miles away from rodeo dr. I would never say it's a "dangerous" or "crappy" area.

    • @robjohnston366
      @robjohnston366 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thfpsalditnzk6336 The 8:1 ratio dissipates when one considers that USC has 1.4 times more graduate students than undergrads: 28k graduate and 20 undergrad. UCLA is more of an undergrad college, 31k to 15k. It takes more faculty to educate grad students.
