Interesting you point that out. Cyborg at the beginning of the teen titans show was not a very happy person. He was cold calling himself a freak etc. But he's actually really joyful and enthusiastic throughout the show. Shows how finding people who understand and support you can totally change you

I believe some of them are by an artist called Gabriel Picolo’s “Beast Boy Loves Raven”
That explains why raven likes him Soo much.
She relates to him on a deep level, both of them keep their emotions controlled in different ways and his let's her at least experience a bit of second hand joy without overwhelming he ability to control herself.

I would say Young Justice did him Justice. The character progression and focus given to him there is frankly astounding. They even manage to work in Beast Boy’s depression and trying to bury it under his goofy persona in the show with him blaming himself for all the deaths around him (including his mother and the doom patrol) even when the show’s world building is so drastically different. It always amazes me how Young Justice can be the most comic accurate adaptation out there and completely its own thing and one of the most unique at the same time.

To be fair in the Teen Titans group, EVERYONE has a horrible tragic backstory
-Robin's parents died in an accident and he got adopted by batman (probably the least tragic backstory in the group but still pretty sad)
-Starfire comes from a planet in the middle of a war and her older sister will eventually become a dictator with an iron fist
-Cyborg had an accident and had to lose 90% or so of his body to survive
-Raven's dad is LITERALLY SATAN

He almost used her to enslave the world so she had to trap him in another dimension using a crystal that requires her concentration 24/7 So she keeps the crystal on her forehead (yeah the red jewel on her head) having to listen to his twisted words every second of her life.
Trigon (her dad) threatened the dimension she lived in (cause he used his kids to dominate worlds) so she had to run away back home to earth to protect the only home she has known..where she learnt to be at Peace and chose her "light over her darkness" (a problem she struggled with for a long time) p.s her mum is dead.
Young justice has a plot where beast boy is dealing with depression from trauma and recent events. Definitely recommend it, it shows that he isn’t always goofy and showed the complexity of depression

Raven is a half demon who can't be at her full potential because she can't control herself + she has daddy issues (Raven is the only Titan I don't know much about so feel free to add more in the replies)
Starfire was just bullied by her sister ever since childhood but she still loved her. The sister was also the only known family we know she has. She was traded by her sister as a slave for "peace", leading her parents to die from sadness/grief.
Robin was a child with parents who were acrobats so he basically grew up in a circus. The ropes that his parents were swinging on broke so they died. Batman adopted him, but Robin isn't confident with himself, thinking he's always in someone's shadow. Leading him to leave Batman's side so he could work solo
Cyborg was just living his life as a normal guy until he got into an accident, leading to his mother's death. Also making his dad replace all his body parts with robotic parts just so he could stay alive.

In the comic books there's an obscure iteration of Raven where she gets goofed into a dimension of cosmic nothingness for all eternity after a battle with Trigon.
I have a rough time googling the actual edition, but I remember being much younger and absolutely mortified of the way her story ended.

Honestly Beast Boy back in the 2006 Teen Titans was always my favorite character. At the time I picked up comics and saw is origin story, cause of that I grew to respect his character because he was always so cheerful.

Not really lmao. The titans show is incredibly close to what fans wanted it was just the story and character use and castings that people didn't like. Especially Jason. Nightwing/Grayson was the only one who everyone genuinely loved from what I've seen
Titans showed all the tragedies of the characters in the show. Your idea of a teen titans show is nothing like the teen titans.
Teen titans was made to show that sidekicks can be heroes too and can shine out of their mentors shadows. It isn't about characters who don't have families becoming a family. It's about the characters uniting to prove sidekicks arent what they are which resulted in the 2/5 of the originals becoming main heroes of DC and recently considered as more important as their mentors(Nightwing and wally)

Sounds like Tiny Tina from borderlands 2. She said she always makes jokes and has that maniacal laugh because it's a coping mechanism because if she ever stop she'll remember her trauma and go crazy. After all, she had to watch her parents getting experimented upon right before escaping to the wasteland of planet Pandora.

Funny thing is im not a traumatized, had a pretty good upbringing both my parents were usually there lots of family and plenty of love from them all.
BUT I STILL have a nervous tick of smiling like uncontrollably so (Im talking Fire Force Shinra levels...) i usually deflect most stress and nerves with humor to lighten the mood. Even when im not looking for a laugh.
WHY? Ik im not depressed cause even if i do end up feeling like shit eventually my weird ass brain chemistry just makes me feel better. Ill just laugh it off and I move on and feel good again. Im textbook not depressed. And i have no tragic backstory... so why tf do I relate?

In the comics terra always was working with slade, slade used her, she was attracted to slade, they slept together, terra never felt anything romantic for garfield, she hated him, she wanted him dead, tried to kill him, told him how much she wanted him to die slowly and with pain, even after all that sh!t gar still thought terra was good, terra showed him one more time she wasnt
I feel like the way he deals with his trauma is regression to where he never legitimately grows up correctly so he act childish so he can get the childhood he never got when younger in a way to make up for the lost years

I think it's part of why his pairing with Raven turns out so popular. Both deeply traumatized characters dealing with it in completely different ways which could potentialy help each other and bring one another some happiness

In young justice seasons 3 and 4 they go really into his character and his mental illnesses. They show him going through therapy, dealing with depression, having ptsd episodes, etc. it's really sad to watch but I'm so glad they gave his character the justice it deserves

Didn't he once try to wear Mento's (his foster father) super helmet to gain control over all the animal kingdom at once, and he briefly became a being as strong as Superman, but young Gar's mind and body couldn't handle the strain?
They actually did show Beast Boy's depression and the stuff that he went through they still give Young Justice the show it's like on a different platform because how serious the show is now
Yup. And it also shows how the goofiness and nonchalance has a darker side to it, because Gar won't acknowledge he has a problem and rejects people trying to help him.
I also like how they depict the intervention failing because that does happen and people sometimes beat themselves up over the fact that therapists can help their loved ones when they can't. It's not a sign that you don't love them enough or that you "gave up on them", just that this is a medical problem for a medical professional.
They did him justice in that show, no pun intended lol.

Honestly young justice covered this aspect of beast boy so good, he acted cheerful and upbeat but was suffering emotionally in secret until eventually it became too much and all went crashing down onto him
Agreed but the fact they had to use more than one season for this never fit with me. This could've easily been a single season story arc. He's already been a main character for 2-3 seasons when they should've focused on the actual main characters

It showed how strong he was at using his defense mechanism whole showing everything that’s been going on in his life over time from childhood to young adulthood. Then, he finally reaches a breaking point where he can’t function normally, pushes everyone away, and then has to face it to really heal.
Hated how quick his trauma was solved in one episode after dealing with it all season. (Young justice)

Beast boy's my favorite in the group and deserves a moment in a movie or big show that lets us see him fully and care for him. I am not beast boy but I do at times hide pain through a smile.

Young Justice actually goes into it a lot. Without spoiling too much, someone on the team dies and it's pretty much BB's breaking point. He withdraws, goes into an extreme depression and shuts out everyone while refusing to get help because "that's how he always dealt with grief"

one problem with young justice currently atleast with season 4 i think is that it went too much in depth with beast boy and shined away from the stories of the other people and the worst part of it is that most of it was disconnected and didn’t really matter as a whole it’s sad to see that lowkey young justice fell off imo and even worse is that the show was recently cancelled again

@@conlooka9356 except those 2 story arcs were all interconnected with the plot of that season where as season 3 and 4 lowkey (s3 to a much lesser degree) fail to do like we have a story arc of a mom learning to handle his autistic son from learning that a new god is the son of darkseid ??? i found that stupid and it’s also SOMEHOW involved in the same season where there is a time traveling kryptonian villain trying to essentially take over everything it’s just a giant big mess

Young Justice season 4 has an amazing story line for this. After his best friend Superboy dies, he reflects and realizes everyone he loves has died. Like his mom committed suicide, after this he goes to another family, the Doom Patrol and they all get killed in a mission. Then, he forms the Team called The Outsiders. One of the members (and his friend) starts killing and feels it is his fault. His other best friend was Jason Todd and he also died. Beast Boy goes under Depression and gets addicted to sleeping pills. It’s a good story arc
Slight correction, his mom was killed by Queen Bee, who (either directly or indirectly) ran her off a cliff in her car. They mention it was her sometime in season 3, and in the therapy scene in season 4
It basically stays true to the writing of the teen titans comics and I lov it.

@@voxelbandit Yup, once it got renewed a few years back, it got 2 seasons ordered - 3 and 4. Now with all the WB/HBO bullshit it got cancelled again :/ Here's hoping that if it bounced back once it can do it again
He's the sad clown, in the origunal TT show, when Starfire went to the future, BB literally was a sad miserable clown to make a living, broke my heart. I have always felt for him even prior to this short

I feel like amongst all of the trauma in the Teen Titans, BB needs to get a mental health check episode where the team understands more of his past (i would prefer more though)

We see the goofy and happy character go through depression and loss on an intense level. Using handfuls of meds just to sleep, minimal interaction with those he cares about and loves, rejecting any helping hand from others (i.e gf, family, friends). It was heartbreaking to see the icon of fun and joy for the TT so far down in a pit of despair
Beast Boy's my favorite ever since I watched the OG Teen Titans CN show, and after delving into his character more, I found myself really connecting with him and ultimately agree with this clip that he deserves happiness
I think young justice did beast boy pretty well. They had multiple scenes and episodes where his pain peaks through

I think teen titans the animated show always honored beast boy. Every season had a dedicated storyline for the growth and struggles of beast boy especially the last season
One of my favorite Character storywise.
His PDSD and Depression was greatly done in the young justice. Hope if they get a new Series he gets a happy story
