A truly tremendous talent!! Songwriter..."Off the charts!".... Producer..... "Off the Charts"! Studio Master .... "Off the Charts"! Taking on the Record Industry Twice!! and he won both times. He secured and preserved fairness and other benefits for the Artists and what they create! Recognized by countless artists for all the accolades mentioned. If you ever have some free time, watch his 3 hour biography. It's great! Thank goodness the band recorded a lot of things as teenagers before they were famous!
This is not an overstatement ... the Tom Petty / Mike Campbell songwriting duo are so important to the evolution of Rock Music from the mid 70s forward. They are on my Mt Rushmore.
Tom is so good! Great songwriter, great musician, so many hits! As a Beatles fan, I am especially delighted by his friendship and collaboration with George Harrison and The Traveling Wilburys.
This is my favorite Tom Petty song. And, yes, his voice is a true rock-n-roll voice, it's very original, and we always know who it is. He's got a lot of greats "Here Comes My Girl", "Don't Do Me Like That", "Runnin' Down a Dream", "The Waiting is the Hardest Part" "American Girl" and more! Love your reactions! RIP Tom Petty!
Tom Petty whats not to love ? This cat knew music and how to perform and the Heartbreakers are the most unappreciated band in Rock n Roll. Tom was a Legend in his on time and after ! ❤ thank you guys for covering him . 🎸 💔
Tom Petty is definitely one of those guys who has a few well-known hits but loads of genius in his whole discography. Songs like this are just so dang catchy. His vocals on the whole Damn The Torpedoes album absolutely blow me away. "Don't Do Me Like That" is another great track from the album. "Runnin Down A Dream", "Last Dance With Mary Jane", "Breakdown", "American Girl", heaps of others. He also has an absolutely fantastic duet track that topped the charts with Stevie Nicks called "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around".
Tom Petty is a great artist to explore - so many great songs. Saw him live in concert - you'll really like "Don't Come Around Here No More", "American Girl", "Breakdown" "Even the Losers" "The Waiting" and he does a nice duet with Stevie Nicks "Stop Dragging My Heart Around" - he was the coolest.
Tommy's got one hell of a rabbit hole to fall down guys, sure you're prepared. Been rockin' to Tom and HBers since this album came out in the late 70's. Tom never changed no matter how popular he became or how rich he became, still had the swag like he just doesn't give a fuck, that's why he's always been on my Mt Rushmore. Good grief there's Breakdown, Listen To Her Heart, American Girl, Refugee, Don't Do Me Like That, Even The Losers, Here Comes My Girl, The Waiting, Night Watchman, Woman In Love, You Got Lucky, There's been a Change, Don't Come Around Here No More, Make It Better (forget about me), Spike, Dogs On The Run, Mary's New Car, Jammin' Me, Let Me Up (I've Had Enough), My Life/Your World, Self Made Man, I Won't Back Down, Running Down A Dream, Mary Jane's Last Dance, You Don't Know How It Feels, You Wreck Me, Honey Bee, Wild Flowers, Saving Grace etc, etc, etc..............
y'all picked a great place to start with tom & the heartbreakers. this was a banger from their 3rd album, DAMN THE TORPEDOES, in 1979. pretty much the entire LP is of hits. check out: don't do me like that" "here comes my girl" "louisiana rain" "even the losers" when they were writing and recording this album tom was in a brutal legal fight with mca records. the label was trying to force tom to turn over the master recordings and tom literally was hiding/stashing/moving the masters around to keep them out of their reach. the whole experience was the inspiration for the lyrics/angry tone of "refugee" ("somewhere, somehow, somebody must've kicked you around some. who knows maybe you were kidnapped, tied up, taken away, and held for ransom...everybody's had to fight to be free...you don't have to live like a refugee"). it really gives extra life when you hear it in context ❤ i am a die-hard early tp & hearbreakers fan. everything from their first 3 albums and up to "the waiting" from their 4th LP is ALL AMAZEBALLS. i recommend from their first 2 albums: american girl breakdown anything that's rock and roll the wild one, forever i need to know magnolia and my most favourite song that never made it to an album: casa dega sadly, we lost tom in october of 2017, shortly before his 67th birthday. i miss him everyday and am so thankful i got to experience his magic live, when he (and i) were youngins. tom, you made an immense impression on my life. i love you dearly ❤ gents, you"re gonna LOVE this rabbit hole ❤ thanks!
Tom is instrumental in ya'll's burgeoning knowledge of music. He stood up for artistic creativity (see the excellent and long documentary film Runnin' Down a Dream) and lived his whole life working his ass off and having a great time being himself and no one else. People have recognized his singularity for some time, check out his collaboration with Dylan and Harrisoin and Lynne and Orbison in the late blooming Traveling Wilburys. Eggceptional. And yeah he died recently. Check out Last Dance with Mary Jane and American Girl and all of it!!!
He doesn’t look like it but he was a badass and didn’t take a lot of shit and certainly wasn’t going to be told how to manage his music and career especially by suits sitting on their asses around big tables. Tom is absolutely an American legend and icon!
Keep reacting to Tom. He had great songs like "Breakdown", "Honey Bee", "Mary Jane's Last Dance", "Learning to Fly", "I Won't Back Down", ", and many others. Tom passed away in October of 2017. Btw, for a REAL TREAT, check out Tom Petty, Prince and other legends performing the George Harrison/Beatles song "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" as a tribute to George when he was posthumously inducted into the Rock&Roll Hall of Fame.
Yes, they should totally react to that so we can watch them see all the legends and Prince and Tom sharing that smile during Prince’s mind blowing solo
Tom Petty was the king of rock-pop songs. Great songwriter with super catchy hooks all over the place. 100 years from now cover bands will still be playing these songs. Keep going with him. RIP
TP was the soundtrack to our lives. Whew.... Dig deep guys. That is from Damn the Torpedoes, came out right before my freshman yr of college in 80. We rocked it hard. He is definitely one of the best songwriters of our generation, and cool as hell. I was lucky enough to see them in concert, damn they were good. There are too many hits too name, 30 years worth bruh. American girl started it all. One of my personal faves is Swinging, his rock n roll story telling at it's best. Thanks!
He was part of the Travelling Wilburys too. A kind of supergroup, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, George Harrison and Jeff Lynn of ELO. Brilliant 👏🏿👏🏻
Tom Petty died the day after the horrible mass shooting event at an outdoor concert in Nevada, so his passing was not the news event it otherwise would have been. If you liked the swagger, check out "Breakdown" next.
This song came out and, basically as unknowns, they went on SNL and CRUSHED it. The next Monday at school (I was a sophomore in high school, haha!) everybody was talking about it. This was a massive record at the time and the band's music has aged real well---I was wondering when you guys were going to start spinning these guys, enjoy! You guys are the best! Happy New Year! Go Blue!
I was a sophomore or junior in high school as well when this came out. I remember seeing the album Damn the Torpedoes in the record store. Great album.
Breakdown and American Girl came out in 1976. I Need to Know came out in 1978. Breakdown was their first top 40 record and got massive airplay in Atlanta. You could argue that Refugee was their breakout hit but they were anything but unknowns. Especially on rock radio.
If you liked this, check out Petty, Prince, Jeff Lynne, Steve Winwood and more playing «While My Guitar Gently Weeps» as a tribute to George Harrison, at the 2004 HOF induction.
yes, we lost Tom in 2017, after he did the bands 40th anniversary tour. His leg bothered him the last few months, he thought he had fractured it, but he had broke his hip and was in alot of pain, but he finished his tour and never did complain to any of the band members the whole time. RIP Tom, your missed brother
Tom Petty is playing on the radio somewhere at every moment in every single bar, car, basement in North America. You know his songs without knowing you do. He’s a treasure. Open this box, and dive deep in boys. You will love him and the Heartbreakers. “Don’t Come Around Here no More” “Free Falling” “Last Dance with Mary Jane” “Walls” the list never ends.
Tom and the Breakers are one of the all time great bands. And Petty, one of the great rock songwriters. Deep, deep rabbit hole you must go down. Tom passed about six years back, one of only two times I’ve cried for losing a music hero…..George Harrison was the other.
Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers concerts were the most special events I've ever been to. There were always drop dead gorgeous women in front of the stage and the crowd was filled with people of all ages from kids to grandparents. The crowd sang along with every song and the love between Tom Petty and his fans was phenomenal!
“Tell me why you would lay there, and revel in your abandon” --my God, that’s one of the best lines ever in any kind of writing, and it’s from some punk kid out of Florida.
Tom Petty (blonde haired guy) 😊has one of the more unique sounding voices in music! Many many great songs to get into with him; you’ll be both surprised and impressed I believe. Yes he had a heart attack a couple years ago. May I suggest “You wreck me baby” as a song to listen to.
I was lucky enough to see Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers along with another legend Steve Winwood and his band at the Forum, Inglewood, CA back in 2014....one of the best concerts I have ever been to.....both acts were unbelievable......
Saw him, live, in the 80s - his encore: BOB DYLAN came out and jammed with him - it was SO GREAT: will NEVER forget that!! RIP, Tom!! WE MISS YOU!! HUGS, GUYS!!! Again: GREAT PICKS!!!
This was his first huge hit, out of many. One of the great true rock 'n' rollers, Tom is a real legend. And what an amazing band, underpinned by the great Stan Lynch on drums.
This was the one that turned me on to Tom Petty when it came on my clock radio when school morning in high school. It warmed its way into my dreams and I woke up to it and I was instantly deeply in love with it. It's still probably my favorite Tom Petty song, although he had so many great ones. I bet you guys would love his hit Running Down a Dream.
Tom Petty was always solid and easy to enjoy. One of the best hit makers in rock history really. I don't play him much as there's just something about him that's great while not being exceptional. It's hard to explain. This is my favorite song of his. His vocal is one of his best.
I can't believe that was your first Tom Petty song! This one is, to me, an example of a perfect rock song! You called it, he's got Swagger! You will find the his latter day songs are often more folky and softer, whereas his early work is more rock (I personally love his rock songs the best!). Many more to go!
Please do Stop Dragging My Heart Around, his collaboration with Stevie Nicks. Other hits include Breakdown, You Got Lucky (two of my personal favorites), Mary Jane's Last Dance, American Girl, Free Fallin'. As several others have already recommended, during the tribute concert to George Harrison, Tom Petty is one of several artists you know and love contributing to a performance of While My Guitar Gently Weeps that included Jeff Lynne, Prince, Steve Winwood, and Harrison's son, Dhani.
100%. And even though Prince stole the show, Tom was controlling the performance & cont'd to give Prince the nod to keep going. He said he knew it was a very special moment, even while it was happening. And he was great on vocals, himself.
So glad y'all discovered Tom Petty. His sound was totally unique and he was a man of principle, standing up for artistic freedom. Next up, check out "Breakdown," so funky, it reeks! Also, "Last Dance With Mary Jane," "Free Fallin'," "American Girl," "I Won't Back Down," ... and so many others.
Tom Petty was no joke. My personal fav is running down a dream. His guitarist really kills it. And he played with George Harrison in The Traveling Wildeberry’s. Anybody that can be in a band with George. Conversation over. George could play with anyone he wanted. May he RIP. Peace 🙏
The magic of Tom Petty is illustrated most clearly by the fact that if you were to poll Petty fans asking for their favorite song, you would get an evenly dispersed list of about 25 of his songs. He speaks to nearly everyone and could play 4 completely different concert set lists and the crowd would still know every single word. I'll just do my underrated masterpieces, "Room at the Top", "Woman in Love" and "The Wild One, Forever".
The Best! Tom passed away in 2017. Huge fan here! I saw him 3 times in concert. Last time was his last tour. SO glad I went! About 1987, I was a waitress at Sonny's Real Pit BBQ in Gainesville Fl qhere he'sfor.. I served him, his wife, daughter, and his roadies. Such a gentleman!
This is the first radio hit from Petty & band that I remember from when it was in heavy rotation 43 years ago, and it's right up there among his best. He's just great ---knows how to craft a tune for radio (taking after his spiritual big brother, George Harrison) and has a kickass band behind him. And I persist somehow in speaking of him in the present tense.
Looking forward to a Tom Petty journey with you. I can’t begin to describe his contribution to music, let alone his collaborations with some of the goats! Now he is legendary himself.
I was wondering when you'd discover Tom Petty. You need to do a lot more Tom Petty. He is a complete master, an original, a gentle wit, and one of the rare musicians who has a huge run of hits, and then continues making meaningful, moving music, morphing through many, completely convincing styles, working with many great artists, remaining vital and relevant until the day he died. He has a huge, rich deep catalog, so many choices... Stop Dragging My Heart Around, a duet with Stevie Nicks, Learning To Fly, Free Falling, I Won't Back Down---on and on.
The memories. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers was my absolute first favorite rock band as an adolescent. I probably listen to this song in my room over and over and over. Thanks for bringing up such great memories.
You guys friggin appreciate great artists. Tom Petty was a badass. His band was the best. Real professionals. Take a deep dive into his stuff! It's as if his songs always existed... but he discovered them and shared them with us.
Tom Petty is top drawer. One of my great experiences was seeing Bob Dylan at Wembley Arena in London with Tom Petty and his band as support in 1987 AND playing as Bob's backing band. Incredible! It was a blistering set and Tom & The Heartbreakers just took Dylans songs musically to the next level. Tom has so many great songs including Stop Draggin My Heart Around with Stevie Nicks which I am pretty sure will tick all your musical boxes.
Many people said that Tom Petty sounded like The Byrds. When asked what some of his favorite old school bands were.. Tom replied, "The Byrds!" He even does a couple of copies by the Byrds. Tom was old school all the way. When they were recording the Full Moon Fever album, he insisted that he and the band go into the studio and add their own live hand claps to certain tracks. One of the younger engineering assistants could not understand why Tom insisted on having the band come in just to do hand claps. Tom said, "Son, sit back and see how you you make music that grooves ."
"You don't know how it feels to be me"! And every other Tom Petty song is worth every moment of listening! I love his harmonica playing! R.I.P. Tom Petty.
Tom and Mike's genius does not lie in their radio hits. Please dive into Tom's more "obscure" songs- Crawling Back to You, To Find a Friend, Echo, Blue Sunday, Room at The Top, Time to Move on......
A great song and a very good band. Was lucky enough to catch Tom Petty a few times at Jones Beach theatre in Long Island. An outdoor amphitheatre right on the bay. Had 8th row right down the middle. I was always a fan ,had all the albums but until I finally saw Tom Petty live, I wasn't giving him the same consideration I gave to other legendary bands. I had been underestimating Tom and the band for years.Well they rocked Jones Beach for 2.5 hours and it was dynamite!! He debuted the Full Moon Fever album plus loads of killer tracks from his catalog!!! I was a true believer after this show, it also made me realize how dumb I had been, depriving myself and waiting until 1990 to go see Tom Petty in concert..A damn shame that he's no longer with us. A true underrated and unsung rock and roll hero..Great selection, great reaction ,another long home run by Laa and Chee. You guys got a boat load of great music to enjoy. I'll be riding shotgun along with you brothers on this one! Count me in!!
It really sucks Tom Petty isn't still around
I agree with that 😢
It’s still hard to believe. People pass on but Tom was always around
Check out the documentarie "Running Down the Dream" thier just a garage band. haha
Yea it does suck that he don’t come around here no more
Lot 9f artists just didn't know when to say when. Turned to drugs to mask thier issues. That's sad, Prince, MJ, and Elvis
I cried the day Tom died. His music has been a part of my life for more than 4 decades.
Me too 💔❤️
Same. Bawled.
WITH YA!! 💔💔💔
Yep, and still in mourning for real. There are few humans that really leave a void when they leave. At least he’s up there jammin with the Greats ♥️
Only two we lost over the last 20 years that actually made me tear up a bit are Tom Petty and Dolores O'Riordan. Both gone way too early.
"Here Comes My Girl". My favorite TP song of many.
Tom passed 10/02/17. A great loss. That was Tom. A legend.
Are you in the Knob Mob?
@@barbarascotto3873 - I do love the Dirty Knobs. Yes!!
@@timdore1131 me too
Agreed
wow, Tom Petty has alot of banggers guys, do some more and yes, we lost Tom Petty last year, what a loss to the music world. RIP Tom
Tom and Stevie Nicks did a great job on stop dragging my heart around ♥️
You see why we love this when it came out! Back in the days of sitting on the couch watching VH1.
RIP Tom Petty. You must explore their music you won't be disappointed. He is one of the great rockers of all time. ❤
I think Tom Petty had perfect radio hits
Listen to "Hard Promises" all the way through, 3 times. Then you will understand album rock.
My biggest regret with regard to never seeing him live is Tom Petty. Great reaction.
44 years later and it's still a goddamn hammer of a song. They couldn't miss with that one.
That whole album is incredible, nothing weak on it.
**LUV** this song so very much cuz man i sure feel that way in this crazy life sometimes mhm
Tom Petty whats not to love ? This cat knew music and how to perform and the Heartbreakers are the most unappreciated band in Rock n Roll. Tom was a Legend in his on time and after ! ❤ thank you guys for covering him . 🎸 💔
These young people need the music we had. 🏞️🌄

The catalogue is SO deep. “The Waiting,” “Even The Losers,” “Here Comes My Girl,” “Don’t Come Around Here,” and on and on…
Oh yeah, explore more of The Heartbreakers, - You got lucky, is one of my favorites.
Tom Petty is greatly missed. 💔
RIP Tom Petty...More Tom Petty please!!! Huge catalog!
Gateway to TP for many of us. RIP Tom.

Love his guitarist Mike Campbell.
Nicest guy ever, my high school friend.
I saw this video when Merv Griffin debuted it on his talk show in 1979. I bought the album Damn the Torpedoes the next day.
Even the Losers is a favorite of his. He's got tons of good tunes.
Favorite of mine too... became my theme song off that album 🙃
y'all picked a great place to start with tom & the heartbreakers. this was a banger from their 3rd album, DAMN THE TORPEDOES, in 1979. pretty much the entire LP is of hits. check out:

when they were writing and recording this album tom was in a brutal legal fight with mca records. the label was trying to force tom to turn over the master recordings and tom literally was hiding/stashing/moving the masters around to keep them out of their reach. the whole experience was the inspiration for the lyrics/angry tone of "refugee" ("somewhere, somehow, somebody must've kicked you around some. who knows maybe you were kidnapped, tied up, taken away, and held for ransom...everybody's had to fight to be free...you don't have to live like a refugee"). it really gives extra life when you hear it in context ❤
i am a die-hard early tp & hearbreakers fan. everything from their first 3 albums and up to "the waiting" from their 4th LP is ALL AMAZEBALLS. i recommend from their first 2 albums:
american girl
breakdown
anything that's rock and roll
the wild one, forever
i need to know
magnolia
and my most favourite song that never made it to an album:
casa dega
sadly, we lost tom in october of 2017, shortly before his 67th birthday. i miss him everyday and am so thankful i got to experience his magic live, when he (and i) were youngins. tom, you made an immense impression on my life. i love you dearly ❤

Great reaction as usual. Next Tom Petty song should be "Breakdown"
Refugee was my first hear of Petty and became an instant fan. Remain my favorite of Petty (RIP you are missed)
A Historical Legend!
"Refugee" is one of best rock songs ever written and recorded...
Tom wrote a ton a great songs. You guys are in for a DEEP rabbit hole if you so choose!
‘American Girl’ was his first hit. Cool song. Also ‘Breakdown’ from the first album. Slow funky groove.
American Girl is such a great song. And it was so perfectly used in Fast Times at Ridgemont High
"Breakdown" is a song with a groove you'll like! Short song but big impact! Tom Petty and Heartbreakers had a deep catalog full of gems!
One of the best American rock bands of all time! Lots of great songs starting with American Girl, The Waiting, Breakdown and Here Comes My Girl.
y’all needa check out more of tom’s work
this man... this band... y'all are in for a treat! beautiful arrangements/instrumentation, southern swagger, 10/10 pop songwriting
If you liked this, check out Petty, Prince, Jeff Lynne, Steve Winwood and more playing «While My Guitar Gently Weeps» as a tribute to George Harrison, at the 2004 HOF induction.
Yes, please please!!! They need to see Prince on that 3 min guitar solo!

Super tight band, with an incredibly extensive catalogue of recognizable hits.
I saw Tom Petty in concert around 2003. He was so cool. Everything was perfect. Perfect concert.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are the greatest American Rock and Roll
Band since the Beach Boys and no one's been close since .
Tom Petty is a flat-out rocker, tons of great songs.
Saw him, live, in the 80s - his encore: BOB DYLAN came out and jammed with him - it was SO GREAT: will NEVER forget that!! RIP, Tom!! WE MISS YOU!! HUGS, GUYS!!! Again: GREAT PICKS!!!

One of my favorite bands. Thanks.
This album, Damn the Torpedoes, is thought by many to be the best he’s ever done. I agree
His tribute of My Guitar Gently Weeps with Prince, Jeff Lynn and more is an absolute must see!!!
You guys could donate week straight of Tom Petty, & still only scratch the surface of his fantastic library.
Tom Petty was no joke. My personal fav is running down a dream. His guitarist really kills it. And he played with George Harrison in The Traveling Wildeberry’s. Anybody that can be in a band with George. Conversation over. George could play with anyone he wanted. May he RIP. Peace 🙏
Breakdown!!!! 🔥
Pettys strength was his song writing. Campbell was icing on the cake.
Runnin' Down a Dream, please. Out of so many fantastic Tom Petty songs, it's my favorite.
But, that changes.
Thanks for reacting to this great song. 🎉
Tom Petty has TONS of phenomenal songs.🎶
They were so so so good live! Such a great song writer. RIP Tom....
Mr Florida himself ,,one of America's best RIP TOM
His best song from his best album. 🔥🔥🔥 One of the best songs from the 80's.
Looking forward to a Tom Petty journey with you. I can’t begin to describe his contribution to music, let alone his collaborations with some of the goats! Now he is legendary himself.
Go Laa! Go Chee! Great song. Tom Pettys big smash. It kicked the radio door open for him.
The best American Rock band of all time imo.
The memories. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers was my absolute first favorite rock band as an adolescent. I probably listen to this song in my room over and over and over. Thanks for bringing up such great memories.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers is always best live .
It's about time guys!! Lol.. Def a rabbit hole to jump into with both feet!!... Truly one of the last great musical artists!! R.I.P Tom..
It's hard to pick a favorite Tom Petty song BUT this is one of mine! 😊
Keep it coming with TP.
You guys friggin appreciate great artists. Tom Petty was a badass. His band was the best. Real professionals. Take a deep dive into his stuff! It's as if his songs always existed... but he discovered them and shared them with us.
I’m just learning how amazing Tom Petty was… I didn’t even know he passes away
Tom Petty is top drawer. One of my great experiences was seeing Bob Dylan at Wembley Arena in London with Tom Petty and his band as support in 1987 AND playing as Bob's backing band. Incredible! It was a blistering set and Tom & The Heartbreakers just took Dylans songs musically to the next level. Tom has so many great songs including Stop Draggin My Heart Around with Stevie Nicks which I am pretty sure will tick all your musical boxes.
He was great to see live, literally a 2 hour long sing a long fest!
Great reaction!! I love Tom Petty and this refugee song is one of the greats.
"You don't know how it feels to be me"!
And every other Tom Petty song is worth every moment of listening! I love his harmonica playing!
R.I.P. Tom Petty.
Tom and Mike's genius does not lie in their radio hits. Please dive into Tom's more "obscure" songs- Crawling Back to You, To Find a Friend, Echo, Blue Sunday, Room at The Top, Time to Move on......
a real master , its about a mind , a voice, a carism, he takes a special place in the music
