My 17 OR Taco, just prompted that message. Saw two other video's before yours and they didn't do it justice. My man, liked the video and subscribed. Will go buy a soder tool tomorrow morning for this project. I hope this fixes my issue.
There must be a recall for this! My new 4wd Tacoma is having issues with the 4wd getting going to 4wd mode ...took it to dealership...they said read the manual lol...but now I know what to look for...thank you
Had mine start having issues just before 60,000 miles and the dealer fixed it for free. Now at 82,000 and it is having issues again. Out of powertrain warranty, but your video shows that I can take care of it myself. Thanks!
There is a good amount data on the forums which will help you in trouble shooting and even checking the motor without taking the ADD off. I recommend you look it over, it's a big help.
@@ClassyTacos Tore into it last night and water got into the actuator and there was rust and corrosion on the motor. That was the part from the dealer Feb of 2020. Glad I got the spare part. Installed and working now. Thanks again!

Had a similar problem with my older 4Runner....Not sure if the set-up is the same as the Tacoma though. Took it to the dealer and it was not a cheap item to replace. Thanks for the video, if this comes up on my Tacoma or 4Runner again I may just try to fix it myself....You made it look halfway doable for me at home.

Best way to get super tight Philips screws out is using an impact driver, if you don’t know what it is it’s a tool that you hit with a hammer and it breaks the screws free very easily. Great video thanks.
Yes I know what it is. Those work real well on larger pieces where you can have it flat on a bench or it’s part of a larger, heaver structure. So you can hit it with a hammer. They will not work so well on the ADD as it’s an awkward shape and needs to be held down. Thanks for watching.
My 04 4runner having the exact problem as yours and I will use your method since you made it looks simple enough to give a shot. How long before you can drive after putting the actuator back and do you have to add differential fluid at all?
You can drive after, just give it a couple for the gasket to seal. It’s a good time to change out the diff fluid and check your breather connections at the diff.

Hanks for the video is really to the point, I had the green a4x4 light flashing stock on 2wd so I did the procedure and cleaned it up but when installed it back the ADD actuator is beeping why do u think that could be??
So my truck had the 2wd to 4wd mode change malfunction warning light. Went away on its own. Today used the 4wd on the beach no issues at all going into 4wd. Leaving it went into 2wd but now the green 4x4 light is flashing constantly and it won’t shift into 4wd you think I should try this method to fix it?
Try taking a rubber mallet and tapping the ADD after you put the T case shifter in 4wd. It’s worked on my 4runner (though I keep having other 4wd failures).

@@ClassyTacos I got mine apart. The little pins on the back of the motor weren’t soldered, but they were fastened together somehow. The motor worked fine. I noticed a small amount of water in the housing, though. I’m not sure how it got there because I haven’t done any off-roading with it. That’s the only issue I could find with mine. I dried it out, cleaned everything, greased it up, cleaned/reinforced the gasket and reassembled. Hoping for the best.
@@ClassyTacos Yeah I wondered about that. But when I took the whole thing apart, the tube was very securely attached. It took a lot of effort to disconnect it. The only other possibility I can think of besides a bad gasket, is condensation. We’ve had some pretty wild temperature swings in my area lately, along with a lot of rain. We’ve been bouncing back-and-forth between 60° and 20°. Maybe the breather tube is pulling in moist air which then condenses with the temperature swings? 🤷🏻♂️
First I would try to get it to work with the front tires off the ground. Lift the front and try rocking the wheels back and forth a little. See if that works.
I’m having a hard time understanding why soldering the connections would fix the problem if the leads hooked up to it prove the motor is working already. I pulled my actuator apart and tested the motor and it all works and there’s no water or corrosion inside, yet it doesn’t want to move when it’s plugged in. Bought a new one that’s on the way but now im not convinced that I need it. I might pull it back apart and solder it.
The ADD is super frustrating. You could just wait and rest the new one. That way you will have a better understanding of the next steps. Thanks for watching.

@@stevenlangston2577 when you try to move it don’t push it in, try just left to right. If it’s stuck that could be your problem. Did the motor spin when you bench tested? Did the fork move when you bench tested? What happened to make you take it off? I’m trying to narrow it down for you.
@@ClassyTacos everything worked the way it was supposed to as I went through the video: Motor spun Fork moved Clean inside/no corrosion or debris/no water Switching 2wd to 4wd… started blinking 4wd and LO light… it switched to 4wd as I drove… lights still blinking… after leaving area where 4wd was needed… switched back to 2wd and it did not switch back to 2wd until a few days later as wife drove it. Blinking lights went off signaling 2wd was active… took it out to test. Switched to 4wd and it started blinking and did not activate 4wd. Switched knob back to 2wd and still blinking.
What are the symptoms of this failure? My Tacoma never wants to shift into 4W Lo (or out) - it just beeps at me. Eventually, after me fussing with gears and driving back and forth, it will pop in. Could it be the ADD? I don't know what was wrong with the old manual little shifter.
A slow too actuate could be the motor is going bad or a weak motor. Many taco owners same the same thing, it takes a bit for it to engage/disengage. Thanks for watching.
When you soldered I noticed you did not apply flux, nor did you make sure there was not oil/grease contaminating the contacts. If you don't, the solder will not flow, which is what I believe I observed, so the connections are still suspect.
Please Help!!! What would make the actuator not engage when you put it back in after you made sure the motor on the actuator works. the light on the dash keeps flashing 4 Lo in orange and all 4 tires are flashing in green. Thank you Liz
@@FelixFelixB Start with this -- 41400-35034. With all part numbers I recommend you call the dealer and ask for part numbers to be sure, before you buy anything. Have your vin ready and they can get you part numbers that will fit your truck. Thanks for watching.
Looking for some help with mine. I have done this, didn't fix it. I have replaced both 4wd Hi and 4wd Lo sensors on the transfer case. I need another idea. I am even willing to go to trans shop, I just don't know what I am looking for or should say.
When you had the ADD off did you check if the clutch ring was able to slide left and right freely? That is the physical way to engage 4wd & 2wd. It's important when you change sensors or slide the clutch ring manually, you need to make sure all the different systems are in the same position, as in all need to be in 2wd or all need to be in 4wd. So the in cab switch, ADD and transfer case. They all need to read the same position. If you have already tried this, and a new ADD it may be a good idea to take it to a trusted shop and have them look at it. Tell them everything you did. It's always a little difficult to try and diagnose thigs over the keyboard. Good luck and thanks for watching.

@@ClassyTacos yes still under warranty.. i got the truck brand and new AND so far the axle oil seal was replaced and now the front diff acuator is toast. Will be replaced by the dealer for free truck will be ready tomorrow!

I think you should do a ton of research on the forums first. There may be other ways to fix your issue.

@@cjdangles usually if you find water it came in through the breather tube. Make sure it’s connected back on the nipple. 🤙

Question for ya man when you put it back on I didn’t see you add a gasket or make one, just wanted to make sure I need or don’t need to regasket it?
I used the same one that was on there, the factory gasket looked good. I re-greased it. Thanks for watching.

Are you supposed to drain the front diff fluid first? I felt like I lost a gallon of diff fluid as soon as I cracked it off.
I did drain mine, like I mentioned in the video. You don’t have too, but you will lose oil.
