Absolutely bullshit, Sarah Jane smith is the ultimate companion she is such a class companion who made her character on the same level as the doctor himself Sarah was always the main companion for me, Sarah was brave strong smart loyal hard working and such her own character and such an individual. No one beats Sarah Jane if all the companions came back and was against each other I know for a fact Sarah would win!
Hold on, you exclude Captain Jack as he has his own spin off show, okay...But yet, Sarah Jane Smith is up there and she had her own spin off??? I mean, she deserves number one, rightly so but the lack of logic for excluding Captain Jack is baffling... Plus Susan isn't the only relative to meet The Doctor...What about Jenny?
I think it's because Jack was only in a handful of episodes before Torchwood whereas Sarah Jane was a companion for years (arguably during the show's prime before the revival) and didn't get a spinoff until decades later.
i feel like most people didn't like her because she acted really bitchy towards the doctor and was always pissed and jealous about Rose which didn't set well considering her sad sendoff
WatchMojo probably didn't think of him as a companion. There is probably a case to be made for that choice. I put him in the first spot though as he is probably my favorite character in the entire series. So yeah: biased much.
I used to spend a long time wondering why so many people didn't like Clara. Then I actually watched her - and I still don't understand where all the hate comes from. Clara Oswald is a fantastic companion, and a fantastic character. She's not cowardly, she's not unkind, she's not lacking in intelligence, she's not boring, she's not cruel, she's not unfunny…I mean there is nothing - NOTHING - unlikeable about her.
And that's what's wrong with her. She's perfect and that makes for a bad character. She's THAT female character. You know, the one that the main character in any show/movie usually wants. The spunky, cute, quirky one that is basically everyone's dream girl. She can also do just about anything. Again, not flawed in any way, which makes her bland, unbelievable and boring. That's why she is a awful character. Even worse, a bad companion.
Nessa Perez and let's not forget how easely danny convinced her that the doctor is a bad person even though she has known him for years and knowes him 10000000000000 times more then danny
Being unable to cook is not a flaw that gives her character depth. Cooking is literally the only problem she has. Cute isn't it? Beyond that, she is perfect in every way, and dull and uninteresting in every way. She's still severely a Mary Sue, an idealized character, and nothing else.
Nessa Perez I was throwing out the cooking as a cheeky example for laughs. She struggles in other ways, too. I personally find her character engaging, and with quite a bit more depth than you give her credit for.
I absolutely LOVED Donna. While not being my FAVORITE companion, the chemistry was amazing and obviously the comedic chemistry was even better. They balanced each other very well. I often go back and watch their episodes because it’s just so good.

To be honest, I prefer RTD era of Doctor Who as opposed to Moffat's. Also, it would be great if there was a male companion in doctor who, I mean, I haven't seen much of that in the modern Who.
David Harrison Agreed... Moffat's episodes are so confusing. Back in the Eccelston and Tennant years his episodes used to be really good and scary, but now he just fills them with these really annoying plot twists.
I liked her but (in my friends words) the 10th doctor was looking for a distraction after Rose. Martha wasn’t good enough and she slipped from his memory. This came up through discussing the roles that the female companions had from Rose to Clara. I didn’t know what to make of Martha since she didn’t really make that big of a hit with me. I admire her bravery but I think that if she met the doctor at a different time, he would pay more attention to her. Sarah Jane is the perfect companion, and she is rightfully loved by the fans. After her, the next in line has to be K-9. Come on, he's K-9. Of the new ones, Rose is the best, followed by Donna Noble. Two others that were special favourites of mine were Leela and Captain Jack.

I honestly do not understand why some people here hate Rose as a companion. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but personally I think she was one of the best. She helped relaunch the series and both her and David Tennant as the Doctor was the highlight of the series for me. You could see much more complicated storylines and matters that actually made you think when they were on the show. Plus it's quite obvious she was a fairly good companion for she won the biggest poll ever done for Doctor who as the favourite companion, with Sarah Jane coming a close 2nd. And if it's the love story that's bothering some Doctor Who fans then that's a real shame because those are usually the same people who think Amy Pond was the greatest companion ever. But wasn't it Amy Pond that tried to run away with the Doctor all the time, jilting her to be husband the night before their wedding day etc. To be honest I got quite sick of the whole "girl who waited" story over and over and over again... If I had to make this list, the order would probably be - 1- Sarah Jane 2- Rose Tyler 3- Donna Noble (who never fell in love with the Doctor so 1+ for that) 4- Rosanna 5- Martha (unfortunately a rebound girl) And so forth. But like I said everyone is entitled to their own opinion so my comment is just how I see things. Your opinion may differ :)

The idea is...not horrible but you have to have a strong character for that to work and, me, I think Grace from the 1996 Doctor Who movie had more chemistry. She's just more interesting, had a bit of a fling with him and The Doctor basically went on his way after their meeting. You could argue that last point was "bad", but at least The Doctor didn't creepily obsess over her every time he got a new companion. Rose is basically Ace without explosives. The only reason people like her so much is that a lot of people only watch New Who and thats it. As stupid as that is (considering the classic and new show are in continuity...why would you NOT watch the classics?), you leave out many great companions like The Brigadier, Jamie, Ace, Ian, Barbara and Romana which all make Rose look even blander and more boring.

They didn't exclude Captain Jack because he has his own spinoff show, they excluded him because he is MOSTLY known for his spinoff show. Jack appeared in a grand total of ten Doctor Who episodes (11 if you count his cameo in "The End Of Time: Part 2") and was an on again, off again companion, rather than a constant one. Sarah Jane is much better known for her time as a companion and was a constant companion for four seasons of the classic series and that's without counting her subsequent reappearances

I agree with this list. Though I expected Rose to be at #2. I knew Sarah Jane HAD to be at #1! Was disappointed, though, that K-9 didn't even get an honorable mention! I know he was "just a tin dog," but he was loyal, and I loved him best.

Yikes. The amount of people that think Rose was better than Sarah Jane actually freaks me out. Rose, originally, was the classic, down-to-earth girl. And I liked her, until Tennant came along, that is. Then, she got all loved-up and whiny and just generally annoying. Whereas Sarah Jane, she experienced the exact same thing. Travelled with a Doctor, saw him regenerate, but never changed a bit. She stayed the funny, feisty companion that everybody knew and, I suppose, loved.
Rose wasn't my favorite companion, but I liked her. I loved how delighted she was just to be traveling. She's a great representation of the average girl (though significantly more attractive). People complain about her being lovey dovey with Tennant and say she becomes brainless (which she really doesn't) but nobody accuses David Tennant of being brainless because he's Rose Tyler's boyfriend. She's cute, funny, clever and frequently vital to making things work out. But Amy is my favorite.
The people who think Rose have many very valid points but Sarah Jane is the best. They are both "normal modern for their decade" brave intelligent loyal etc. Sarah Jane just brings more. In many ways she is a bridge between different aspects of Doctor Who. She is the perfect connection between classic and modern series. She interacted onscreen with 9 Doctors in 2 different centuries. She was so good at being a companion that she became a sudo-Doctor with a sonic lipstick (driver) and companions. In this role she was the 5th best Doctor. She stayed cute forever. Above all else she is just a phone call away from Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart. How did he not make this list?
HOW THE HELL IS CLARA ONLY NUMBER 7?!?! Clara is probably the best companion. She has been there through everyone of the doctors regenerations and saved his life multiple times. How is she not number 1 or maybe 2 because of Sarah Jane smith. Clara is by far my fave companion.

mhstevens2001 you write truth. I find that this is one factor that elevates Sarah Jane above Rose as #1. Same with ranking Jon Pertwee's 3rd Doc as number 1 above either Hartnell or David Tennant 10th as the #1 Doctor.
TBH there has been a few times that he has been on the TARDAS with The Doctor and I was wondering the same. He has been with the first 7 doctors from the first all the way up to the 7th and made a guess appearance on Sara Jane. Was also mentioned in a few of the newer shows.

For me roes was the best as for all of the other companions I felt like something was always in the way (e.g Rory for Amy. Clara's story for Clara ) but for roes it just seemed perfect because she wasn't perfect! She had an absolutely amazing character devolvement as she went from a shop girl to a hero 😍

I have mixed feelings about Clara. She's charming and I like her character. The episodes with Smith looked promising. On the other hand, I feel like the Doctor Who universe would have been better off without her, especially the Capildi episodes, which got creepy. The whole "I'm obsessed with her and I'll violate everything that I believe in to save her" is an angle that one might use with two out of control teens, but an old man (2000 years) and 20-ish girl?
John Watt to me Clara is the best companionship exactly because she is different, she changed the doctors ways of thinking and that just makes her more then just a throw away girl companion like the most.
John Watt that wasn’t the point though, he wasn’t obsessed with her, she was his best friend/ daughter figure whom he believed he had a duty of care for. He did all in his power to protect her.
For me Donna was such a great companion! I enjoyed every single moment she spent with the doctor, they sublimate each other I've never laugh so much in these episodes! She didn't need to prove anything to the Doctor, they were just perfect partners. I miss those two so much!
Amy is my all time favorite!!! Generally series 5,6 and 7 with Eleven, Rory and Amy is my favorite series of them all!! I loved Matt Smith's version of the doctor, he really did a good job! Amy, Rory and Eleven will always be my Doctor and Companions. and of course River Song :D
As David and his companions will always be my doctor and companions. Matt Smith's run really ruined the whole experience for me. I could say that maybe I just grew up but after re-watching series 1-4 again I realised that the show just became too childish.

I agree she was underrated, but the fact that she was in love with him brings her down a bit for me...I was so sick of that shit with Rose. Donna still remains my favorite companion from the modern era, because there was not an inkling of romantic interest in him. She was so far the only modern companion (excluding a few one offs) to act like an actual classic era companion) In fact in a lot of ways she reminded me of an older version of Ace.
I only saw the 2005 reboot series but Rose Tyler, Martha Jones, Donna Noble, Rory Matthews, Amy Pond-Matthews, Clara Oswald, and River Song were all great companions. I haven't seen much of the older series but Sarah Jane, Jamie, and Ace were definitely the stand outs.

But for example looking at other big polls and the comments thread here, there are a lot of "Rose should've been number one" and there are more Rose love than hate. So no I'm not incorrect in stating that "majority" of the fans doesn't disagree with that comment. A huge part probably does, but majority no, I'd say the fanbase is fairly split on that subject. Dai Lo I think it depends on how you judge a companion. Some, especially newer viewers, tend to only consider the main "2nd character/lead" as the companion. But when you look at the Classic series, especially the first two doctors, there are so many companions that only traveled from one story to another - heck, some even had the misfortune to only appear in episodes that are lost now. It would be unfair to not include them as companions though, so Characters like Mickey, Jack and River are also considered as companions. Since River did travel with the Tardis, I think she can be considered as companion. I would've raised a bigger eyebrow on the Victorian Trio, as they never traveled with the Tardis (on show at least), but since I tend to enjoy them most out of Moffat's writing, I probably would've let it pass XD
And i don't like rose, so don't even try calling me a fanboy (I've heard that argument too many times to count) Martha was basically the love sick puppy who tried to act bada** but ended up being so cringy. In my opinion Donna was the best, but that's just me

My favorites were Jamie and Sarah Jane. I really liked Jamie for stating the obvious and his comic relief. He worked well with Patrick Troughton. Also Rose and Ace contributed greatly to the fun of the show. Tegan may have been my least favorite.

I think it's because Jack was only in a handful of episodes before Torchwood whereas Sarah Jane was a companion for years (arguably during the show's prime before the revival) and didn't get a spinoff until decades later.

I used to spend a long time wondering why so many people didn't like Clara. Then I actually watched her - and I still don't understand where all the hate comes from. Clara Oswald is a fantastic companion, and a fantastic character. She's not cowardly, she's not unkind, she's not lacking in intelligence, she's not boring, she's not cruel, she's not unfunny…I mean there is nothing - NOTHING - unlikeable about her.
And that's what's wrong with her. She's perfect and that makes for a bad character. She's THAT female character. You know, the one that the main character in any show/movie usually wants. The spunky, cute, quirky one that is basically everyone's dream girl. She can also do just about anything. Again, not flawed in any way, which makes her bland, unbelievable and boring. That's why she is a awful character. Even worse, a bad companion.
Nessa Perez and let's not forget how easely danny convinced her that the doctor is a bad person even though she has known him for years and knowes him 10000000000000 times more then danny

Being unable to cook is not a flaw that gives her character depth. Cooking is literally the only problem she has. Cute isn't it? Beyond that, she is perfect in every way, and dull and uninteresting in every way. She's still severely a Mary Sue, an idealized character, and nothing else.
Nessa Perez I was throwing out the cooking as a cheeky example for laughs. She struggles in other ways, too. I personally find her character engaging, and with quite a bit more depth than you give her credit for.
I absolutely LOVED Donna. While not being my FAVORITE companion, the chemistry was amazing and obviously the comedic chemistry was even better. They balanced each other very well. I often go back and watch their episodes because it’s just so good.

I liked her but (in my friends words) the 10th doctor was looking for a distraction after Rose. Martha wasn’t good enough and she slipped from his memory. This came up through discussing the roles that the female companions had from Rose to Clara. I didn’t know what to make of Martha since she didn’t really make that big of a hit with me. I admire her bravery but I think that if she met the doctor at a different time, he would pay more attention to her.

I honestly do not understand why some people here hate Rose as a companion. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but personally I think she was one of the best.
She helped relaunch the series and both her and David Tennant as the Doctor was the highlight of the series for me. You could see much more complicated storylines and matters that actually made you think when they were on the show.
Plus it's quite obvious she was a fairly good companion for she won the biggest poll ever done for Doctor who as the favourite companion, with Sarah Jane coming a close 2nd.
And if it's the love story that's bothering some Doctor Who fans then that's a real shame because those are usually the same people who think Amy Pond was the greatest companion ever. But wasn't it Amy Pond that tried to run away with the Doctor all the time, jilting her to be husband the night before their wedding day etc. To be honest I got quite sick of the whole "girl who waited" story over and over and over again...
If I had to make this list, the order would probably be -
1- Sarah Jane
2- Rose Tyler
3- Donna Noble (who never fell in love with the Doctor so 1+ for that)
4- Rosanna
5- Martha (unfortunately a rebound girl)
And so forth.
But like I said everyone is entitled to their own opinion so my comment is just how I see things. Your opinion may differ :)

The idea is...not horrible but you have to have a strong character for that to work and, me, I think Grace from the 1996 Doctor Who movie had more chemistry. She's just more interesting, had a bit of a fling with him and The Doctor basically went on his way after their meeting. They didn't exclude Captain Jack because he has his own spinoff show, they excluded him because he is MOSTLY known for his spinoff show. Jack appeared in a grand total of ten Doctor Who episodes (11 if you count his cameo in "The End Of Time: Part 2") and was an on again, off again companion, rather than a constant one. Sarah Jane is much better known for her time as a companion and was a constant companion for four seasons of the classic series and that's without counting her subsequent reappearances

Yikes. The amount of people that think Rose was better than Sarah Jane actually freaks me out. Rose, originally, was the classic, down-to-earth girl. And I liked her, until Tennant came along, that is. Then, she got all loved-up and whiny and just generally annoying.
Whereas Sarah Jane, she experienced the exact same thing. Travelled with a Doctor, saw him regenerate, but never changed a bit. She stayed the funny, feisty companion that everybody knew and, I suppose, loved.

Rose wasn't my favorite companion, but I liked her. I loved how delighted she was just to be traveling. She's a great representation of the average girl (though significantly more attractive). People complain about her being lovey dovey with Tennant and say she becomes brainless (which she really doesn't) but nobody accuses David Tennant of being brainless because he's Rose Tyler's boyfriend. She's cute, funny, clever and frequently vital to making things work out. But Amy is my favorite.

The people who think Rose have many very valid points but Sarah Jane is the best. They are both "normal modern for their decade" brave intelligent loyal etc. Sarah Jane just brings more. In many ways she is a bridge between different aspects of Doctor Who. She is the perfect connection between classic and modern series. She interacted onscreen with 9 Doctors in 2 different centuries. She was so good at being a companion that she became a sudo-Doctor with a sonic lipstick (driver) and companions. In this role she was the 5th best Doctor. She stayed cute forever. Above all else she is just a phone call away from Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart. How did he not make this list?

For me roes was the best as for all of the other companions I felt like something was always in the way (e.g Rory for Amy. Clara's story for Clara ) but for roes it just seemed perfect because she wasn't perfect! She had an absolutely amazing character devolvement as she went from a shop girl to a hero 😍

I have mixed feelings about Clara. She's charming and I like her character. The episodes with Smith looked promising. On the other hand, I feel like the Doctor Who universe would have been better off without her, especially the Capildi episodes, which got creepy. The whole "I'm obsessed with her and I'll violate everything that I believe in to save her" is an angle that one might use with two out of control teens, but an old man (2000 years) and 20-ish girl?
John Watt to me Clara is the best companionship exactly because she is different, she changed the doctors ways of thinking and that just makes her more then just a throw away girl companion like the most.

John Watt that wasn’t the point though, he wasn’t obsessed with her, she was his best friend/ daughter figure whom he believed he had a duty of care for. He did all in his power to protect her.

I enjoyed every single moment she spent with the doctor, they sublimate each other I've never laugh so much in these episodes! She didn't need to prove anything to the Doctor, they were just perfect partners.

As David and his companions will always be my doctor and companions. Matt Smith's run really ruined the whole experience for me. I could say that maybe I just grew up but after re-watching series 1-4 again I realised that the show just became too childish.
That just show how different people are :D It still amazes me that people can have so different opinions :D Because Matt was the only reason I got into watching Doctor Who :D

I agree she was underrated, but the fact that she was in love with him brings her down a bit for me...I was so sick of that shit with Rose. Donna still remains my favorite companion from the modern era, because there was not an inkling of romantic interest in him. She was so far the only modern companion (excluding a few one offs) to act like an actual classic era companion) In fact in a lot of ways she reminded me of an older version of Ace.
I only saw the 2005 reboot series but Rose Tyler, Martha Jones, Donna Noble, Rory Matthews, Amy Pond-Matthews, Clara Oswald, and River Song were all great companions. I haven't seen much of the older series but Sarah Jane, Jamie, and Ace were definitely the stand outs.

But for example looking at other big polls and the comments thread here, there are a lot of "Rose should've been number one" and there are more Rose love than hate. So no I'm not incorrect in stating that "majority" of the fans doesn't disagree with that comment. A huge part probably does, but majority no, I'd say the fanbase is fairly split on that subject. And it changes all the time.

She did have her moments but she was just there. Not as a companion, but s passenger. Not much screen time or adventures
Dai Lo I think it depends on how you judge a companion. Some, especially newer viewers, tend to only consider the main "2nd character/lead" as the companion. But when you look at the Classic series, especially the first two doctors, there are so many companions that only traveled from one story to another - heck, some even had the misfortune to only appear in episodes that are lost now. It would be unfair to not include them as companions though, so Characters like Mickey, Jack and River are also considered as companions.
Since River did travel with the Tardis, I think she can be considered as companion. I would've raised a bigger eyebrow on the Victorian Trio, as they never traveled with the Tardis (on show at least), but since I tend to enjoy them most out of Moffat's writing, I probably would've let it pass XD

My favorites were Jamie and Sarah Jane. I really liked Jamie for stating the obvious and his comic relief. He worked well with Patrick Troughton. Also Rose and Ace contributed greatly to the fun of the show. Tegan may have been my least favorite.
Eileen Mynes Jamie’s Death really struck me.
