    I'm a teen artist and though I make next to no money with my Redbubble, every sale I make is a huge boost to my self esteem and belief in my art. The thought that there are people walking around with my art on their bodies is just amazing to me.

      I know right, when I saw so many people that got tattoos of my work I was blown away. Didn't get a cent for any of that but wow, they like it so much they want it on their body for life and I'm more than fine with that.

      Sadly they do have that rule to an extent. I sell fanart-ish on the website and I sadly had 2 of my designs copy righted and taken down, with no stricks/warnings but the removal email, even tho I created the whole design myself but it was a drawing of Brendon Urie (with no face tho) So fan art can be taken down under some circumstances even if it was whole heartedly your work.

    • @5wm562
      @5wm562 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Actually they don't have a "no fanart policy" as much as it is a IP and copyright policy; fanart is allowed, only fanart that is supported however. For example Rick & Morty fanart is permitted within RB's guidelines. You can not just post any kind of copyrighted material. As for why and how there's so much of it on RB anyway boils down to finding it. You could post an image of Spider-Man and as long as you don't tag it that or 'Marvel' etc. RB is simply too busy to search and remove every single infringement upload. And people are very creative about how they tag infringing works that you will find them and the algorithm doesn't.

      That would be cute however on red bubble, even though they have a bunch of products to choose from, they don’t have pockets on the shirts, usually because it would get in the arts way and you can’t decide where on the shirt the art goes. It is just the middle, a pattern all over, and I think you can do it in the pocket area, but of course there isn’t a pocket, and the sizing probably wouldn’t work if there was a pocket just because it automatically puts it in one of those three places and you can’t really adjust it.

    The one thing I like about RB is the fact that it removes the issues of postage for me. Shipping from Australia to other countries is ridiculously expensive and i found with etsy I ended up out of pocket a few hundered dollars so whatever I sold wasn't worth it (only sell stuff I can post for free on there now, as asking $50 for postage on an A3 print of my work is something I find no one wants to do and when it costs me that much to actually post it... You can see why I'm glad there's an alternative) . However I do suggest at least having your percentage at least over 40% as some items like mugs and stickers if you choose to do them can end up making you no money at all (infact the reason its set at 20% is to cover the manufacturers fees - that's it and in the case of cheaper items you can wind up having constant emails from RB telling you they covered the missing costs) so by slightly upping your percentage avoids that.
    My only issue with RB isn't fanart (as they are atm trying to get licences for somethings so fan arts can be sold - bit like the Valve community made content store which I highly recommend people check out as its a great example of how to encourage artists who create fan art but do so with 100% their own designs, styles ect - the true definition of creating new content with existing properties which is actually something in RB's rules too that you can do but how they manage it makes little to no sense) but the stolen licened material like logos from copyrighted sources, offical posters for video games ect... All that kind of stuff is what causes alot of original creators to loose out, weither they're good or not. If people started reporting the clearly stolen stuff, there wouldn't be so many problems. (just in the last week I've seen stolen designs from Snorgstees. Com on there, Offical Square Enix poster art for the last final fantasty game and ThinkGeek... that's sort of the stuff I'm getting at that needs people to report them.)
    Also if wondering why i don't have too much issues with fan art - it's because proper fan art falls under a copyright term that allows people to make brand new content from existing works, something that's actually quite common in things you'll find in art galleries! However - there is a fine line for what is considered new creations with existing content, tracing or just stealing and tragically not alot of people are ever taught the difference. If you've ever studied fine art before you'd know that the masters in every movement copied one another to a degree - pretty much making fan art of one another's works... Heck back in Michaelangelo's and Carravaggio's days that was how you got jobs! (infact in the world of comics like DC or Marvel this is STILL how you get work) if you could imitate the current style of the time, you'd get more work than someone doing something else entirely. Not saying originality is bad - however once you understand why we have that legal rule in place for fan work you can actually see it pretty much everywhere. It's when you don't create something entirely new from the source of inspiration that all the problems start and rightly so.
    To put it bluntly, without some form of 'fan work' we wouldn't get new ideas, concepts and the formulation of new genres. You have to start somewhere - heck how do you think Japan's huge comics culture started? It was all because of western comics being imported and them wanting to have something that was theirs in a similar format. It's how we create new culture... And besides, not all fanart creators want to make fan art forever, but they do want people to see they do art and that one peice can get people hooked on thier other works in the same style. Sometimes you gotta bait people to take an interest in original content unless you're super lucky to have such an original style that you get attention for that instead.

  • @ebbaeriksson3580
    @ebbaeriksson3580 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I love how chill your are, Kasey. You’re not attention or money hungry (even though you obvs need both to make a living off of youtube, but I’m sure you know what I mean). You also stay true to yourself. You don’t shy away from topics as nudity (which I like, your nude drawings are the best x), you’ve talked about stuff like being “kid-friendly” etc. The fact that you’re being honest and that you’re naming both pros and cons about (for example) redbubble is great. I feel like many TH-camrs are afraid to be honest (because of sponsors etc). And of course we have your art too, but honestly I could write a novel about it, so we’ll save that :)

    Tbh I have literally no social media presence so I doubt anyone would buy my junk, but as I see it at least you can do something with your work. I've also heard of a place called Threadless or something similar, but I might try this instead.

    With the fanart rule, Redbubble has partnered with some companies to make it so you are able to sell some fanart, such as with Cartoon Network. But others, you probably won’t be able to. That’s all I know.

    I love your art! I love Redbubble too! I've had a shop but haven't been as active as of lately. You get out of it what you put in though. Like you said, having a TH-cam channel is helpful. I have full-time day job, so it is difficult to put time into marketing your work and selling it on the side and Redbubble is a nice place to start. I am just coming back from an extended medical leave too and finally getting financially back on track, so it was nice not to have to worry about shipping details. It's great for people who can't get out into the world if they have a passion for painting, drawing-illustration and aren't as mobile. I haven't been able to order my work yet, but I love the products you've shown, they look like great quality, soon I will be ordering products! Thanks for this video-excellent information!

    Do you have any suggestions about scanners/printers and uploading traditional art? Any info you would be willing to share about making your own prints would also be useful. • @aldoink

      I would suggesy scanning it in and getting a free art tool (like forealpaca), and using the eyedropper and bucket tools to make sure it looks as neat as possible. Unless you're using something ink based, like markers, then you should be fine.

    Redbubble shirts are amazing quality, fyi. I have sensory issues and the fabric is soft enough that I have no problems with their shirts, especially the heathered shirt colours which are also slightly stretchy. When I'm buying christmas and birthday gifts and want to get someone a shirt it's the first website I go to. I've had some of their shirts and haven't seen any fading on them despite wearing and washing them often. Also, their washing instructions include "don't slap pandas" and it makes me smile every time I read them.

    I've gravitated toward RedBubble as I'm creating on the side. Most of my commissions are charcoal portraiture that masses won't really want, so in my down time I like to do quick watercolor images and designs to post on there with no hassle. It's so easy! You're correct that it would be difficult (not impossible) to make a living JUST off RedBubble but the ease of it makes it worth it for my life. Great video!

    I think the dress is cute. I‘ve been buying from redbubble for years, and the quality of basically all their products is AMAZING. All my phonecases I ever owned are from there, the flip cases are so nice. I love it. It‘s a little sad that artist don‘t get more money though, and the amount of stolen art is disturbing.
