"Try to make ends meet, you're a slave to the money then you die." Let that sink in.
This is my funeral song for that very reason... Also I can't change
Since the first time I heard it I thought exactly that
I am so glad to read these comments! I was 12 years old when I heard this song and I knew I wanted it played at my funeral. And truly life is a bittersweet symphony 💛✌🏻
I'm so lost with the story of the royalties, I can't even remember who'll earn a few of the dollars from this play anyway.
@@paulcook7426 Ashcroft and the lads, The Stones came good and gave them their due.
This was a huge song in the 90s put on a movie soundtrack called Cruel Intentions. Absolute monster of a song. When people think 90s, they thing bittersweet symphony
And Goo-Goo Dolls’ song “Iris” was another huge 90s soundtrack monster song.
This song was perfect at the end of Cruel Intentions.
Urban Hymns, first album I bought as a youngster!.
@@SamanthaLeigh7 Can't not think of Cruel Intentions when I hear this song!
They got sued by The Rolling Stones for this song and lost a lot of money.
This was my Mom's favorite song before she passed of M.S. back in 2013. Not trying to be depressing or anything just wanted to say THANK YOU for reacting to this great song! It was a hit back in the day but its one of those songs thats almost forgotten in time
Your Mom had good taste x
You are fine music is till the end
I'm so sorry! She must've been young, because I remember when the Verve came out with this track & I'm 46
All the best to you!
At the other end of the spectrum, my beautiful wife walked down the aisle to the strings of Bittersweet Symphony. The single most emotional moment of my life. I am sorry for your loss, but share your mother's love of this beautiful song.
sending you my love
24 years...and it still gives me the same feeling as the first time i heard it. Such a beautiful song. This was my 1997 lol
Jamiroqoi, “Virtual Insanity” and The Prodigy “Breathe”should be on your radar guys
Facts!
Yes!
I'm going to second that. Both great songs.
Absolutely
Yup, can't argue with either of those, and would raise that with Faithless, Insomnia or God is a DJ or both :)
Lenny Kravitz "It Ain't Over Til It's Over"

One of the greatest songs from the 90s. The album was basically one of the soundtrack to my life at that time. You can tell it's a block rocking beats when others do alternative covers of it. PS the band is actually originally from Wigan in the UK. That video was actually filmed in London.
One of the greatest songwriters to come out of England - Richard Ashcroft!
Yep.
I thought Mick Jagger and Keith Richards wrote this song?
@@506363 No🤣🤣 i know what you mean tho!
@UCxplV2WbU6Zwd5Bf5uxAzpg They never, Ashcroft took a sample (the string section I think) and wrote a song over it.

The huge controversy from this song is that they used a legally obtained sample of the violins from a 1965 instrumental cover version of a1960 Rolling Stone Song (The Last Time). Although the lyrics were 100% orignial and The Stones thief of an ex manager Allen Klein sued saying they didn't obtain all of the necessary sample rights and as a result his company got sole publishing rights while Mick Jagger & Keith Richards were given 100% writing credits for the song. Everyone made millions of dollars from the song and subsequent licensing of the song to commercials, television shows, movies, etc. Even the guy who recorded the instrumental (the sample they paid for) made money yet The Verve made absolutely nothing. The group eventually broke up. Nearly 20 years later in 2015 Mick Jagger & Keith Richards returned the rights back to the Richard Ashcroft, The Verve's lead singer and songwriter. Everyone involved: Allen Klein, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Andrew Oldham were all thieving leeches but at least Jagger and Richards finally saw the light
Original song: th-cam.com/video/6Jnmab7f1hI/w-d-xo.html
Orchestral Cover: th-cam.com/video/9YrllfAMwHI/w-d-xo.html
Also when I went to see the Stones a couple of years ago, they had this singer as their support act xx
Not enough 'seeing the light' to return or split the very large royalties they got though.
Richard knew about this before release and was asked to remove it but he declined and signed away the rights. So he was no innocent in this. The song helped their profile anyway.
@@soroyathemysticmoon1023 Their way of paying him back, I suppose.
I can't stand Mick Jagger. Can appreciate his music, but he's a POS. Dude has no morals, whatsoever. Told MacKenzie Phillips that "he had been waiting for this moment since she was 10 years old .. " .. .. right before he screwed her. Her dad had just left to go get supplies for sandwiches. WTF
I had the absolute pleasure of seeing Richard Ashcroft (lead singer of the verve) play this live. The weather was amazing and every person was just singing along, definitely one of the best experiences of my life.
This song hits my soul as hard today at age 45 as it did at age 22 when it came out in 1997. This entire album (Urban Hymns) from beginning to end is EXTRAORDINARY

That dude was homeless before he made it with The Verve, and this track. Mad respect for the guy.
Sad, I wish The Rolling Stones would have let him get some royalties from this song
I have never seen anything saying he was homeless before this track ever..

This song reminds me of the end of Cruel Intentions with Reese Witherspoon driving away.
Yes, when ever I hear this song, it reminds me of that movie. I thought I was the only one. Lol
This was filmed on Hoxton Street, london,UK. There is an alternate version of the video where Ashcroft stops walking when he bumps into three men and gets beat up by them. Ashcroft gets up and keeps walking, with blood on his face. The video cuts to nighttime and it ends when Ashcroft walks into a wall and stops.
You know now that you say that I do remember back in the day seeing that ☺️

Just found & watched the alternate version...thanks for the heads up 😉
Since I was 8 I fell in love with this song. I’m 34 now wow...memories and the message still lingers
The true story behind this song is as intricate as the song itself as well as the movie that made it popular.
This is mid-90s at its best.
Cruel Intentions!! One of my favorite movies ever, and this song makes it even better. ❤️❤️
Yes, and now, when ever I hear this song, it reminds me of that movie. Lol
They have a good song called " the drugs don't work " it's a banger
That song is heavy emotional 👍 break down dealing with drug addiction so well.
@@jansund1650 Richard Ashcroft was singing about taking antidepressants and how they sucked the soul out of a person leaving a blank emptiness. My partner was a completely different person when he took meds like that, I much prefer him as a functioning bipolar man rather than a emotionless robot.
"He look like the Slenderman" LMAO
This has to be in the top ten songs of the 90s it's just an anthem, everything about it is perfect IMO
The Verve - The Drugs Don’t Work, it’s heartbreaking.

Fanatastic song. Takes me back to my college days. And yeah, they’re a British band.
This is my all time FAVORITE song of all time. Played this over and over and over again for an entire year or two after the album dropped. Every tune on this album is perfect. 💖💖💖
This lyric sums up the entire song .. "Cause it's a bittersweet symphony this life
Trying to make ends meet, you're a slave to the money then you die." Awesome... this is why we need young people to keep writing cause as you get older, the angst and feelings die along with our bodies.
Listen to it again 👍 Pay more attention to the lyrics, rather than the music video. This song really captured and expressed a feeling at that time for many people. A "what's the point of life?" kind of feeling. The line "you're a slave to the money, then you die". This song was like an anthem to apathy. Apathy for life.
"He looks like he's ready to steal, kill, or destroy." You guys are funny! 😆😆😆
This song is a classic.
The lyrics are some of the best and most accurate of all time like this song just hits right on the spot

To me his walk was a timeline of all the people he met in his life. Some he knocked down, many he rubbed the wrong way, and sometimes he dodged what he knew wouldn't help him on his journey. In the end, it was just him and a few people who walked the same road.
Now we need Linger from the Cranberries . Irish Band please ☘️🇮🇪😊

This guy, Richard Ashcroft, has one of the best voices ever. His albums with The Verve and solo are just brilliant! Just adore his music..
Agreed. Velvet Morning. My Lord what a voice.
The Verve "Lucky Man" The Verve was/is underrated...they're truly amazing and talented.
Been my favorite band for a long time. Check their first album, A storm in heaven. It was crazier than what they did later, yet probably it is still the one I prefer... I was 20 when it came out, blew my mind 😍
The entire album is brilliant 🤯. Top ten for sure.

Ooh, I love that one
Literally one of the 90s defining songs ❤
This song was my senior year 98, dramatic and filled with angst. I'm soooo happy you reacted. Your videos are always a highlight of my week- stay safe! 🥰
@N Smith good year. no wonder they love music.
As soon as that music starts I get goosebumps...Ashcroft is a genius even if he is a bit slender man like. The booklet you get for the album this song is on is amazing...they mixed up a line from each of their songs to make a new song.
The cut up pioneered by Burroughs ✌🏻
This was my wedding song! Don't mind the dreary lyrics, the song is epic!
The instrumental in this coupled with his brilliant unique vocals is why this an all time classic after all these years
Seriously hope you read this comment. You missed the best verse, which helps explain the message of the song. Lead singer being rude and bumping into people is distracting (Completely Understandable) But listen again... "Well I never pray,
But tonight I'm on my knees, yeah. I need to hear some sounds that recognize the pain in me, yeah". Such a deep, passionate song. Still love y'all. xo
Yes. The whole song is brilliant. The video is distracting from the lyrics. I hope they listen to it sans images. Just close your eyes and vibe. 🤘🏾
Agree! Was thinking the videos can really be distracting for so many of these songs - not about reacting to a music video, but the way the music makes you feel. Although so many videos really do enhance the song, so it’s a toss up.
@Jack Bauer I think they should try to add closed captions or lyrics to all videos .
The drugs don't work, by the verve....best song xxx
The instrumental version of this song is incredible. I love it so much that I used it to walk down the aisle at my wedding.
The Wallflowers - 6th Avenue Heartache
"You Get What You Give" by The New Radicals. The song is quintessential 90's (in literally every second 90's teen film) and the film clip is simple fun.
Also, two of my all time favourites and future wedding songs: "Kiss Me" by Sixpence None the Richer (another song in HEAPS of 90's comedies/dramas) and "This Kiss" by Faith Hill. Songs that just make you happy.
