This song was a huge hit for Ashcroft, but there was a dispute as the Rolling Stones ex-manager Allen Klein owned the copyright for a sample used without permission in this song, so after going to court it was agreed the song writing credits should be changed to Jagger-Richards and all royalties should go to them and Klein, it wasn't until 2019 until the song writing credits for the song were returned to Ashcroft and the lost royalties were reimbursed also, so a happy conclusion in the end, you should check out the official video too as it's from the era when videos were hugely important and this one was held in very high regard.
Also, an added little bit of fun, this is who Liam Gallagher of Oasis modelled himself on, but was always jealous of Ashcroft as no matter how much Liam tried to be as cool as Ashcroft, he failed miserably, mainly because of his big mouth and childish temper, whereas Ashcroft was always just effortlessly cool and edgy.
Fantastic song full of meaning and while this live version is great the iconic video to this song gives more power to the words. 'The drugs don't work' is another Verve track well worth a listen. Love to see a channel with genuine down to earth people.
Oh Lulu, I grew up in a small Midwestern city but now live in Chicago. Keep being amazed by 'small' new things like busses on the expressway and great customer service. That is what keeps life interesting! Ladies, London in January (don't go in summer- expensive) is not all that expensive relatively. And it is pretty easy. The Brits generally really like Americans. Go! My first visit overseas was at age 30 (28 years ago). And I was sort of scared. And I loved it! I've now been to London 80+ times, have done quite a bit of business there and I have a lot of very good friends in the UK. Keep exploring new things. You all have such a positive outlook that you will revel in any new place you go!
Yes, I love how everything's amazing for here, so charming. But I also worry about her a bit. She's a pretty girl and there are plenty of guys out there ready to take advantage of her naivety. It sounds like it would be easy for a guy to also come across as amazing to her when he really, really isn't.
Went to watch oasis in Manchester number of years ago and Richard Ashcroft was performing too ,great singer ,another British talent❤,carry on the good work girls, love your channel ❤
One of the best songs ever written! They have plenty of great songs, such as: Lucky Man, Sonnet, The Drugs Don't Work, Space and Time (Live Glastonbury 2008), Love is noise (Live Glastonbury 2008), History, This is Music...
Every time I hear this song I think of the movie Cruel Intentions...this might be why it sounds familiar to you Kathy, because it is on the soundtrack to the movie.
It's a farm near Glastonbury, Somerset. Pilton, specifically. I've lived near here for more than 30 years and have worked at Glastonbury Festival for more than 10 years.
Glasonbury Festival is the biggest music festival in the U.K., its held on farmland in a county called Somerset. The Verve have split up but Richard Ashcroft the singer is a huge solo star in his own right.
I remember these guys! They were active during the 90s when similar bands like Oasis,Blur and Suede were popular in England/UK. To really understand how great of a songwriter Richard Paul Ashcroft (lead vocalist) is,you need to hear: The Verve - The Drugs Don't Work. I know you are aware of James Blunt now and his emotional song writing abilities. Richard from The Verve is another one of those, and i think Richard said himself that he was the most satisfied with how The Drugs Dont Work turned out to be. He is really proud of that song. BTW,Bittersweet Symphony has samples from a very known 1965 orchestral version of the Rolling Stones song "The Last Time" by the Andrew Oldham Orchestra. So maybe someone in your family has listened to alot of The Rolling Stones, and thats why it sounds familiar to you,Kathy.
Josh must made such a memorable impression since you think of him that much, it's so cute yet a bit funny..it reminds me of the Amish teenagers every time they leave their community to experience the big cities and all the things that they haven't seen before...
@KathyLuluandDonna I think it would be rude if I didn't say that your Texan accent is very enjoyable to the ears, Nana especially. Some say the same about the Scottish accent to me so I felt obliged to tip my hat your way in enjoyment. Hope you are all well 🍻
This was live in 2021, please keep on mind this song was released in 1997 when the band was still young lol. If you want to hear the song properly always best to listen to the released studio version, it sounds better than a live version that's being sung where they're 24 years older.
I beg to differ! Ashcroft is sounding great on this, the music has that stadium quality of reverb that creates an overwhelmingly atmospheric sound....and of course the Glastonbury festival vibe just completes the scene. The original is clean cut, but almost bland compared to this. I reckon a lot depends on the vocals; singers that have aged badly (or rather, normally) can drag a song down, but when they still sound as good as this, it ages like a fine wine.
I absolutely love this song !! So glad you checked it out !!! I would like to recommend you check out the following bands : Blondie , Asia, Emerson , Lake and Palmer , Burning Witches , April Art , Liliac , Beyond the Black , Vision of Atlantis , Frozen Crown ,and Gallery of Gail. Have a wonderful day , Ladies !!
Bittersweet Symphony is one of the best songs ever written. Not my words but many artists like Noel Gallagher of Oasis (who may be the greatest song writer ever) and Chris Martin of Coldplay. Keep up the great reactions. p.s. you all are the most humble sweet people. If I could send you to Europe I would! Two other great Verve songs “The Drugs Don’t Work” and “Lucky Man”.
@josephpublico2337oh no? Tell me how many other artists besides John Lennon and Paul McCartney who wrote over 100 incredible songs in their prime. Yes, Noel Gallagher of Oasis. Who else? Billy Joel, Freddy Mercury, Pete Townsend, David Bowie, Neil Young, Elton John, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty. The Rolling Stones. Okay, now besides Paul McCartney in Wings who wrote a handful of good songs in his 30’s, name one person on the list above of musical geniuses (because all of them are musical geniuses) who wrote more incredible songs for 25 years past their prime up until today at age 56? Only one. Noel Gallagher. Besides all the anthems he wrote in oasis (just watch the YT video of 50,000 Argentinians singing every word of Don’t Look Back in Anger at River Plate Stadium in 2009 where English is their second language. Before discounting with “come on, get real” have you listened to the 100+ songs Noel has written in his High Flying Birds since Oasis split in 2009? It’s insane at 45, 50, 56. Any artist in their prime of 25 today would kill for his songs. Plus what about the 100’s of B sides in oasis that most never heard which are as good as anything any artist has ever written? Is Noel better than McCartney or Lennon? Or Jeff Lynne? Or Billy Joel? Maybe not. But no one can argue they are a better singer songwriter than the Chief either!
Here are a few suggestions that I hope you will make a reaction video. Thanks😀 Pet Shop Boys - "What Have I've Done To Deserve This?" Dave Matthews Band - "American Baby" The Black Crowes - Remedy"

Hi ladies, another great reaction. Glastonbury is the biggest annual pop festival in UK, and attracts a huge audience (up to 300,000 people) and a wide range of international stars. There are several stages in different parts of the venue. It is also worth seeing the official video released with this song. The Verve are one of the best British rock groups of their time, and have performed three times at Glastonbury, in 1993, 2008 and 2021, I believe. It's also worth you reacting to The Verve's "The Drugs Don't Work" (38 million views): th-cam.com/video/ToQ0n3itoII/w-d-xo.html
Yes, the M/V for it has a much better sound, if not atmosphere - but I'd also suggest getting "Trainspotting" for a movie night - it's used in it. NOTE, you WILL need subtitles - and for the young'un there are instances of drug-use, tragedy, and violence - but it's used properly, to tell the story. Hahaha - I was also born and raised in a small village (like a small township) without traffic lights - until I got older and they needed one on the old bridge into the village because it was changed to one lane. No horses, but family friends has some on their farm a bit out of the village.
