Bob - This car is so awesome on every level! It has a fascinating history. Thank you for investing your time in restoring this beauty. You are a true master craftsman and artist.
Love your videos, Bob. Your scanner controller was part of the set sold by JC Whitney company in their catalog. It also came with a very cheap eight light scanner bar. If I recall correctly all of the positive terminal on the bulbs were connected and the switching pattern was done through the negative wires.
For a couple minutes I was thinking "you should use LED's that would be great!" Then the mention of the fade and how LED's turn on and off instantly.......good call man!
0:36 damn man I love that Banshee concept car. One of the coolest looking concept cars ever made. When I was a kid in the 80's I wished so bad that they would produce the car for real.
That scanner controller was widely available years ago with the JC Whitney knight rider light bar. Use to run these little Xmas lights. I think I still have one of the controllers somewhere and mine went bad too.
That was awfully magnanimous of the gentleman to return the part to you. It's great that you're working on this and trying to use as many original parts as you can. BTW I loved the karaoke last night!
A guy I work with has a Dewalt drill like your Craftsman and it is amazing. I was skeptical of the twist action until he brought it in to use one day, amazing tool.
Wow! It's great to hear when people actually act like human beings! I'm so happy for you, you got this original part back! Whatever you do, don't throw anything away when you restore, from original...I would like a piece of scrap from the original movie car, when you replace with new parts!
I remember these from the movie back when that came out. I was still very much a kid. I always wondered what happened to this car until I found these videos. Good to see you restoring it. It would be really nice if it could be made screen accurate inside and out. Even if, it wasn't necessarily all original. The body will be, and I think that's what's important.
you should do The Wraith Car with Charlie Sheen that thing looked fascinating and still does today, and the Film was just so good due to its Amazing Story line
you should replace the scanner bulbs with LEDS, you should do a knight 2000 style dash on it, or if you restore it back to original make the K4000 dash functional with all the screens and guages and and buttons functional
I know where that black box with the knob came from...the JC Whitney catalog. At one time they sold Knight Rider light bars for and back in 1998 I bought one for my '98 Pontiac Grand AM. They were not as good of course as what a true Knight Rider enthusiast would use, but were fun when I had them.
That's exactly where it's from. JC Whitney's light didn't have the proper fade in and fade out, and just came with that crap box. I had one back in the mid 90's.
the box is identical to the store-bought ones from jc whitney back in the 90s. i used to put those in cars. they came with either amber or red chaser lights.

OMG I have been wanting a powered screwdriver like that forever! No one really makes them anymore. Thanks!
The dashboard on this car was meant to be blank, as you only see the outside of the car anyways. The other car had the process car's dash integrated in which looks cool.
J.C. Whitney control box with the name and graphics removed..that's why it's just black. Also can't use led's because their instant on/off so their won't be any comet trial to the scan..unless you do more modifications like capacitor/resistor load on the outputs or pwm type of controller.
OMG!!!!...Video Bob!....I have the EXACT SCANNER box module!! I bought this off EBAY back in 2008/9! I looked at the video of your module and and put it along side my module IDENTICAL!!!!!!!
Looks like a vellerman electronics kit commonly got from Tandy, radio shack in the 80s. Then the relays were driven off the LED outputs as a “lash up” for the show.
Come to think of it I think you are right lipsi like that is that a box or a gotten from someone had some when I get done to it as well as well as if somebody a chromatid where'd you get that kid and it doesn't look like a data racially that one time.
00 also just remembered something I think I'm built a kit like that at one time but I actually brought out the wires from the LEDs just as a flasher the blink lights on something as well I think that's why I had two of those things if I'm not mistaken but yes I handed in the pants straight relays or relay boards just something that would raise a b l e d i once built a clock that you was fluorescent bulbs to display the time when you push a button the reverse engineered display and to do this and if you can pwnis to E channel air relay they were preheat fluorescence nice flickery display 2 they were only turned on if you hit the button for the time we're friends with electrical guy and asked if I could do something like that cool project. Also wants I did one with big glass tubes and a high-voltage generator that was triggered by the same idea oh and by the way the other clock for the colons and the alarm and p.m. and stuff use incandescent bulbs is there fluorescence for the colons and the other indicators. But back to the one that use the Flash costumes not Ark tubes but the idea was to have old it for Dark Through It of crackling fire kind of like a water plasma tube except it's just a large glass tube and the colons and indicators were spiral flash tubes. Although did the doctors flash but just arcs of blue plasma the idea was your appointment high voltage high enough to realize it but no trigger pulse which just allowed plasma but no ignition of the flash tube I provided spares in case they ever failed. And he Aubrey had a danger high voltage sign to hang below it by the way. Yeah really old rusty one it fit the bill melted in some old rusty piece of equipment housing. Over glass or plastic front
I've heard that the KR2000 team asked Pontiac to use the Banshee, or it's likeness, but GM said no. i wonder why they said no? i mean GM did very well out of the original series. ALSO, soak the part in brake fluid to remove paint without damaging the acrylic. it'll take a few hours to a day to soften and then you can brush it off. i use this technique for model-car bodies to strip the paint off without damaging the plastic body.
I would so very much like to have that scanner glass 😍 And about the engine: Since you never even heard the real engine sound in the movie, I don't really care if it was the original one or a new one 🤷🏻♂️
The thing that really bothered me about the K.I.F.T scanner is that it had no chase fade at all which made it look off somehow. Also a red scanner in a red car was difficult to see
You are one funny guy, gender neutral terminals. And showing forgiveness towards the guy that stole the scanner control thingy it is something that people should do more often, it does not mean you are going to trust that person but the willingness to forgive is healing on itself. Great video.
Bob, I'm Stoked Man! I totally Cant wait to see the 4000 restored!!!!!!! I was one of those kids way back when that watched Religiously and Absolutely remember that car. I'm a car guy so I thought back then it was the banshee but realized it wasnt. But So cool man!
the scanner in the night 4000 was also using a 56 Chevy in the same movie The the script call for Michael taking it out of storage out of kit temporarily putting it in the 56 Chevy until the night 4000 was ready then he transferred it into the night 4000 and it is a JC Whitney circuit control box with 194 Bob's side marker lights sockets I even made one waterproof for the boat scene
Those scanners and control boxes were sold by JC Whittney up untill about 10 years ago. Its the same unit I installed on a couple KITT 2000 repro cars I made in the past.
I was thinking the same thing. He obviously wanted to have something from knight rider, so might be nice for him to have something from the car without feeling guilty about it.
It s great to see that you guys are trying to restore a forgoten Knight Rider Car and not the famous Trans Am ( don't get me wrong, the Pontiac is one of my favorite movie cars ) i hope that you guys can one day enjoye the full restoration of your car and i'm seeing up to follow the project. Keep it up.
Is there a video or two on that OCP Police cruiser beside the Knight 4000? Looks to be one from the first film judging by the logo configuration on the police shield.
My opinion is the engine should be rebuilt. Why? It has maybe 100 miles on it. Yes its old. But replacing dried gaskets and reseating valves for what should be a super clean motor should actually go faster than putting in a questionable rebuilt with 100,000 miles on it. Finding what ever original studio mechanics thought was broken should also be easier. The electrics would have to be addressed but harnesses should be an easy come by. That way the original Mitsubishi motor stays with the car. And like a wise man once said...if you want it done right...do it yourself.
After CHiPs '99, the K4K also appeared in the TV series "Black Scorpion" in its totally red paint.Knight Rider 2000 was the only place it appeared in the red body/black roof combo. Then it was used in the Power Rangers and was painted as a cop car for the first time then I saw it used in Scare Tactics as the cop car and I'm guessing that's when they retired it. Upon seeing it painted black as a cop car, it made me wish they'd painted it black for KR-2000. It looks a lot more aggressive in black and more like KITT.
Its funny that of all the content he has with the fanbase of back to the future and loads more. Knight Rider fans are the ones about to make this channel blow the hell up. Well that and his live stream of singing lol. Good job by the way
Red 194 bulbs are barely bright. Just use regular ones or ultra bright led’s!!! Its a small upgrade for a cool and much brighter effect! Any luck finding those nice chrome rims from tv?
Glad you're taking good care of the original Knight 4000. Imho the scanner needs halogen bulbs for a proper trailing effect. I know led uses a lot less energy but at the moment for me there is only the ZA electronics led scanner that comes close to a halogen scanner.
Me too. I'm 56 now. And now I do something like this inside a $2 microcontroller with a little bit of code. Super easy and for those not familiar, not to worry, there's a million examples online for how to sequence a few LEDs or small lamps using a generic microcontroller, or Arduino, or Raspberry Pi, plus a few small power mosfets. However, the value of using the original box/circuitry that was used in 2000 with this car is that the whole point of doing a restoration is to keep it as close as possible to the original design. Using the original box accomplishes that goal.
Yes it’s a J. C. Whitney scanner box. But I highly doubt it was ever in the car originally. More than likely it had some prehistoric radio shack parts built scanner controller like the trans-ams did. From what I remember of the JC Whitney box, it doesn’t output power, it only switch is grounds on eight lights. There is only one power, and eight grounds. It could never ever power 1194 bulbs without switching out the switching transistors on that board. There are aftermarket people that make a high power scanner light like marks custom kits, that would make a suitable replacement to drive that bar.
looking around it seems that that controls relays and not bulbs , so the 4 volts controls relays , that maybe working correctly. or maybe those are only 6 volts bulbs?
Agree with this, those low voltage outputs could be used to energise a seperate relay for each bulb, the relay receiving the 4v to then close a 12v feed to each bulb. It's probably working fine, needs some investigation for a possible missing relay box or make one up yourself. Might have been carelessly ripped out when the car was painted black. Those integrated circuits are outputting logic "high" which is can be anything between 3.5v to 5v, so 4v is on the money, Those chips are not designed to directly connect to 12v bulbs.
Keep the original parts with the car but yeah, that stuff is fried. Maybe add some inline connectors to make servicing the car easier in the future, like Molex MX150 series waterproof connectors or similar?
swap the motor for the twin turbo version. maybe go all wheel drive and lower the suspension. it would be cool to see this thing come back better than ever.
I had three knight rider lights from jc Whitney very hard to wire do to very very thin gage wires bulbs were like Christmas light bulbs very dim unless showing at night
Videobob Moseley, I had read that on the original Knight Rider car that they had to put in a second battery just for the scanner. I guess the scanner drew a lot of power and kept killing the battery. I don’t know if that was the same with this car though. Just thought you would like to know.
Bob - This car is so awesome on every level! It has a fascinating history. Thank you for investing your time in restoring this beauty. You are a true master craftsman and artist.

Appreciate you trying to use the original in car scanner module, props!
I use to have a GTA Trans Am and I bought one of the Knight Rider lights from J.C. Whitney back in the 90s that had the same type of control box.
1987olds442 same here. I was drawing a blank on their name. As soon as I heard Bob say the “J”....I was going JC Whitney. Lol
A guy I work with has a Dewalt drill like your Craftsman and it is amazing. I was skeptical of the twist action until he brought it in to use one day, amazing tool.
Used to be able to.order those scanner setups from J.C. whitney catalog
Wow! It's great to hear when people actually act like human beings! I'm so happy for you, you got this original part back! Whatever you do, don't throw anything away when you restore, from original...I would like a piece of scrap from the original movie car, when you replace with new parts!

I know you will make the 4000 like new again Bob 👍
I remember when JC Whitney sold these.

Menard sells a mini version of that. I use it for doing electronic work. Most newer ones use a lithium battery, much better quality.
Dude make that dash board look the way it did in Knight Rider 2000 Movie give that car the respect it's been waiting for.
The dashboard on this car was meant to be blank, as you only see the outside of the car anyways. The other car had the process car's dash integrated in which looks cool.
I had one of those scanners in my 82 Firebird. That same control box. I bought it from a JC whitney magazine in the late 90s.
i think everything the original like the movies make the car look so cool

@@bradley3549 I bought mine around 2008/09.
This is awesome. It's like Bob is bringing KITT back to online. There was life left in his chassis and Bob found a heartbeat.
I'm so happy you're working on this car after 10 years, Bob, very cool. Thank you for sharing your vids, man, fist bumps from Canada :)
Looks like a vellerman electronics kit commonly got from Tandy, radio shack in the 80s. Then the relays were driven off the LED outputs as a “lash up” for the show.
Lol Radio Shack always had them in stock they even built power LED meters for home speakers same size box of
Course same red & Black wires!
Come to think of it I think you are right lipsi like that is that a box or a gotten from someone had some when I get done to it as well as well as if somebody a chromatid where'd you get that kid and it doesn't look like a data racially that one time.

Yep J.C. Whitney box for sure, I have one
weird that the production studio used a jc whitney , scanner controller. it was only 50 bucks

That looks like the exact same thing I have, bought it retail from Waushawski's Auto parts in Chicago 30 years ago time, haha
i bought 2 of those screwdrivers after watching your vid.
I’ve always wanted the front scanner and the control box for my trans am. I’m a hopeless dreamer. That would’ve been so cool.
Those scanners and control boxes were sold by JC Whittney up untill about 10 years ago. Its the same unit I installed on a couple KITT 2000 repro cars I made in the past.
I knew it was a JCW from tne 1st time i saw the movie
Another great video. Keep them coming and keep up the good work.
You should give the old gender-neutral bullets and painted-over red-black thing back to the guy for being honest and straight forward.
I was thinking the same thing. He obviously wanted to have something from knight rider, so might be nice for him to have something from the car without feeling guilty about it.
BOB WE NEED A KARR REPICA 👍
It s great to see that you guys are trying to restore a forgoten Knight Rider Car and not the famous Trans Am ( don't get me wrong, the Pontiac is one of my favorite movie cars ) i hope that you guys can one day enjoye the full restoration of your car and i'm seeing up to follow the project. Keep it up.
you could easily rebuild the control unit with an Arduino Board to make it fully customizable (including the "fading" effect of bulbs). would cost 2$
And in the process, put all the bulb control at the light instead of needing that long nasty ribbon cable those stupid things came with.
Just replace the motor. It's the body and interior and scanner that makes the car !
Best part of the entire video “ did I just assume the gender of this terminal? I’m gonna put they over here!” Priceless
You'll get it, Bob. One step at a time.
@12:44 That positive battery connector looks like it's upside down.
It is, which would really limit how much contact the terminal is making with the post.
The unit has a smooth fading effect on scanning back and forth!
You have a sense of humour buddy
Great car, loved it since I first saw it, the moment when the scanner starts and you hear kitt🙏👍
Is there a video or two on that OCP Police cruiser beside the Knight 4000? Looks to be one from the first film judging by the logo configuration on the police shield.
Yes, check his channel.
"Did I just assume the gender of that terminal?? I'm gonna put "they" on "here"

Cool video showing a master at his craft!
After CHiPs '99, the K4K also appeared in the TV series "Black Scorpion" in its totally red paint.Knight Rider 2000 was the only place it appeared in the red body/black roof combo. He knows. It's his car.
The black/red color scheme is also seen on Timecop, I believe it's the last time we see the car with the original paint.
Its funny that of all the content he has with the fanbase of back to the future and loads more. Knight Rider fans are the ones about to make this channel blow the hell up. Well that and his live stream of singing lol. Good job by the way

Bob, That looks like a Warshawsky's piece... (JC Whintey)
Glad you're taking good care of the original Knight 4000. Imho the scanner needs halogen bulbs for a proper trailing effect. I know led uses a lot less energy but at the moment for me there is only the ZA electronics led scanner that comes close to a halogen scanner.
Curious if a iPad or Samsung tablet would fit that dash
Anthony Efx Id put an iPad Pro in it with Soundman’s dash kit.
NE555, 74LS191, 74LS90 ,74LS42, Timmer, BCD counter, flip flop, BCD decoder etc.. I made one when i was 12.
Me too.
I have that same scanner ..got it from J.C. Whitney back in the day. It's in storage somewhere...lol.
I came here to say it too. Thats a JC whitney scanner box!
Keep at it pal !
Really enjoy following this project Bob, thanks for sharing!!

This knight rider car will decimate alll knight rider cars
It will set a new trend in the knight Rider community. Lol
Keep the original parts with the car but yeah, that stuff is fried. Maybe add some inline connectors to make servicing the car easier in the future, like Molex MX150 series waterproof connectors or similar?
swap the motor for the twin turbo version. maybe go all wheel drive and lower the suspension. it would be cool to see this thing come back better than ever.
.....looks like you’re hittin’ the pedialyte pretty hard there. You doin’ OK?
😎
Actually that is EJ's, he had a case of the runs.
I loved the random Little Shop of Horrors reference!
I got more excited about the RoboCop police car! Lol awesome 👍
Really? It's just a boring police car. This is atleast a concept type car.
Anything happening with the Delorean from universal Orlando???
That appears to be a JC WHITNEY scanner controller!
Had 3 for my s10 blazer 2 door suv ( very cool ride, digital dash ! I had a,voice module with record options for my own voicings..)
I have some information regarding that car I'm the one that put the scanner in the car I can tell you all about it email me
Definitely would put an iPad Pro in the dash.
New subscriber here. Sweet looking car. Can not wait to see it finished. Knight Rider, love everything Knight Rider.
When you get through the car I want to see turbo
doesn't the box go into a relay box to switch bigger power? those transistors seems to be rather small for those bulbs
That dash is made for a huge touch screen. This car has seen some shit.
I agree this car should be kept as original as possible, especially the drive train and it’s not like it can’t be done.
Love your videos!
you should get the twinturbo version of the engine and swap it, and maybe even the all wheel drive drivetrain and make it how it should have been
I wonder if that was from the OG kitt if it is from '86
I had three knight rider lights from jc Whitney very hard to wire do to very very thin gage wires bulbs were like Christmas light bulbs very dim unless showing at night
I wonder if that scanner box is the same style they had in the original series.
Do you know what do you cool if you put iPad style screens that actually worked 😄 in to the car please
Great videos sends me back to my childhood! Are you going to repaint it red or black like it really should of been?
If done right, The Saudis will pay a lot of money for Genuine Screen Used car like this one.And I think RoboCop was a bigger hit than BTTF
I have one of those scanners, and the original style light bar boxed brand new never been used. I will one day though
Videobob Moseley, I had read that on the original Knight Rider car that they had to put in a second battery just for the scanner. I guess the scanner drew a lot of power and kept killing the battery. I don’t know if that was the same with this car though. Just thought you would like to know.
