The really genius thing about this movie is that you're never quite sure who you should be rooting for. It would be so easy to turn this story into a simple "eat the rich" thing, but Bong Joon Ho is after something a lot deeper, and he wants you to work for it.

At first you think they might be the villains, but then you glimpse how they look down at the people that serve them, and how they can afford to be so naive, never have to be clever to survive. No heros in this movie

As far as I understand it, Kiwoo and Min met during their mandatory military service and are probably around the same age. He was definitely also too old for Dahye but basically decided to copy Min’s life plan with her since he wants his rich friend’s life. The ending of Kiwoo buying the house was a fantasy. The class system and divide between the wealthy and poor is so intense that it would be impossible for him to reach that level of wealth in his lifetime. The song that plays during the credits is titled 564 years because it would take Kiwoo approximately 564 years to save up enough money to buy that house.

love the deep dive you did at the end! it’s nice seeing a reactor really engage with the media more than just the reaction itself.

I don’t know why, but I never felt that Kevin was taking that rock to go down there to kill them, it always came off to me as he was trying to give it as a offering. They believed it brought wealth. The way he was holding it going down the stairs was not threatening.

I kinda took it as Kevin went downstairs without much of a plan. call back to his discussion with his dad.

To me, this movie has the best scene in recent cinema. The stairs scene is a masterpiece in itself, tbh.
Oh, and as far as I understand, there's this thing with koreans and foreigners, they think it adds prestige. So they go on mentioning US cities to impress the bosses.

The thing about the rock, i’m still not 100% sure but i do know collecting fortune rocks is a popular past-time hobby for elderly men in Korea😂 Also these rocks, if real, are REALLY expensive. The metaphor of this rock in the movie is that its actually fake, and hollow in the middle. The only reason he was able to survive the hit was because of the fact that it’s hollow

I don't really know where you got the theory of Min banging the rich lady cos I never got that and never saw that theory anywhere, lol.
Also, no Kiwoo is very much not high school age. He's been in the military and is at least university age. So yea screw him.

No Min having an affair with the mother and grooming dahye is implied if you know korean. So I think he did do his research quite well

The original architect was shown in a photo as an old, grey-haired man so I very highly doubt Geun-sae was the architect of the house. As you pointed out, he enjoys being "beneath" people (his wife, Mr. Park) and height is associated with status in this movie, so I think he just liked the basement.
I really liked the explanations of what happened with the characters after the movie, such as the fate of the Park son & that Moon-gwang was buried in the house she took care of so long. Very insightful analysis!
    👍

very good movie, even after all this time i love watching new people watch it. especially people who enjoy cinema and get the messages and cinematography choices
another 2 korean movies i always recommend is "i saw the devil" a horror/thriller and "the handmaiden"... hard to categorize the handmaiden, its definetly worth watching tho.
basically every korean and japanese movie ive watched is worth watching tbh

Just some fact, not fun: Heavy rainfall during the 2022 resulted in flooding in Seoul. Many families living in lower ground apartments in the low-income housing districts suffered the same. Their semi-basement flats had been submerged like the scene in this movie. Several people have drowned because the water rising so fast.

49:08 the Min character was one of the most interesting in the story. Despite being in only the 1st 5 minutes of the film, he made a lasting impression on me. Here is my interpretation of the 4 questions you put out for him :
    1. I believe Min was a close High School friend of Kevin (Ki-woo) and thought high of his poor friend but associated with him less as time went on and now being in college. His motivation in giving Kevins family the stone for material wealth was sincere and he respected the family (defending their property from the homeless man, taking his shoes off at the door, commenting on the parents good health, greeting the sister, giving Kevin a job etc...)
    2. I don't think he was grooming Da-Hye. At no point in the film did he try to call her, text her, facetime her or any form of grooming. Groomers usually keep in contact and Min did not . He told a white lie as a way to protect his poor friend from doing something foolish and losing his job.
    3. I do believe he had a affair with the mom, especially the way he said "Anyway, I had fun there" and also the way the Mom was so captivated when talking about MIn ( in stark contrast to Da-Hye who never once mentioned Min in the film)
    4. I dont think Min knew the family would do all that. Kevin and his family got too greedy for their on good and paid the price.
    GREAT FILM!!!
