I'm training to be an assistant coach at my local team and my suggestion to play a 3 - 4 - 3 helped us get our highest league position in 4 years.
The wing back problem can be solved if one goes further up and one stays at the halfway line dropping back if necessary.

Chilwell and James are the best wing backs who could play both defensively and offensively
By compactness 3-4-3 formation is more important than 3-5-2. But I prefer the 3-5-2 because it gives extremely bigger space for wingbacks. But Those two formations are the same in one dimension

Conte's Juve played 3-5-2. With Chiellini joining midfield, Lichtsteiner bombing forward, Pirlo pulling strings, Vidal and Pogba running around and Dybala casting spells, no one compained about a 352 being too defensive!

@@leylannfitzgerald8473 3-5-2 isn't goated. without skillful defenders, defence is pretty much vulnerable in 3-5-2.
4-2-3-1 is great if not somewhat overused, eventually trends will change in this age of ultra-analysis and more "zero formations" will eventually become more and more popular
City play a 343 in possession, with a box or sometimes diamond midfield, with stones dropping back into the back 4 for a 433 without the ball. Stones is effectively a modern sweeper or playmaking defender in the Beckenbauer or Guillet mould

I played this formation as a wing back in my tournament, it's better to get the ball pass it to the rw/lw and and overlap for a crossing and the two players and the CMS could get in the box but I hav to run alot
My coach used a 361 formation with sounds crazy but it was pretty good, its 3 defenders, a diamond midfield, 2 wingbacks and a striker

This formation is also cool at building up phase. The center defender can go forward, on the are of a CDM, making 3 in the midfield. Or the two wide defenders can go forward, and the LWB/RWB go center, making 4 on the midfield. Rudger and Azpilicueta did that often.

Deschamps tried the 3-4-3 (or rather 3-4-1-2) for some time with the French team. With the CMs being Pogba and Kanté at the time, and the LWB and RWB being Theo Hernandez and Kinglsey Coman, there was no problem for the attacking side of the game and it was quite efficient goal-scoring wise, but the big flaw was that a defense with only 3 CBs is really weak and the players need to be really efficient and careful. The french team conceded too many goals, which costed them the elimination against Switzerland in the Euros. After that Deschamps decided to return to the system he usually prefers, the one with 4 defenders, and got to penalties in the world cup 2022 final. I think this system with 3 CBs can only work if you have really amazing defenders who are used to playing with each other, if you don't have that I think having 4 defenders is a must
I feel the major problem is that it is very physically challenging in contrast to a 4-3-3...
Even in video games I invest more on wingbacks cause they tire a lot after each shift in😢

I always use this formation in fifa but one wingback being a RM and other LWB and vice-versa 😅
My favorite is 4-2-2-2, because of the liberty the two midfielder have, they can be wingers,midfilders, attack/defend etc.
Marco Rossi’s Hungarian national team also use this formation in the recent years and it’s quite successful!

For me the prime example for 3-4-3 with wing backs was AS Roma with Cafu and Vincent Candela.

Can you explain 4-1-2-1-2 too? I call it Diamond Midfielder Formation because the formation has 1 right mid, 1 left mid, 1 attacking mid and one defensive mid which makes the diamond shape between strikers and defenders. But you can replace the 2 side midfielders with 2 centre midfielders creating a smaller diamond.
Wilfried Nancy's Columbus Crew should be an example of how best to play a 3-4-3...dude is brilliant and has Columbus in the MLS final in his first season as coach.

However my worst footballing moments have all come under it

It's a mixed bag and places too much workload on the CF and wingbacks

Conte basically changed how teams attack. The 325 attacking formation is now one of the most common amongst top teams.

A 3-4-3 doesn't always have wingbacks it can have LM/RM aswell

Actually, 3-4-3 and 3-5-2 formation weakness on defense are not exploited much nowadays since wingers are cutting inside. Unlike during the 90s and 2000s, wingers are near the touchline and you need fullbacks to match them. So 3 at back will just be fine with the current setup.
i think this formation is most effective with a false 9 and two very inverted wingers and two very wide attacking wing backs
I wanna suggest a rather underrated formation the 4-1-2-1-2
Guardiola used to do it at Bayern and it was extremely successful, although he done a little bit differently. Had just one CM and one CAM instead of two CMs.

Works like a charm in a season. Won both the premier league and league cup with an impressive 34-2-2 records. reach the UCL final only to lose 1-0 against man city.

Thoughts on having one of the wingers be defensive while the other is attacking in a 3-43? Or should they both be box to box for it to work?
Not necessarily, midfielders must do backups to wingbacks for that reason 1-3-5-2 is best than 3-4-3

It works because they call it 3 at the back to hide the fact its an ultra defensive tactic. Its not 3 its 5 the left and right back are just doing dual roles ad the wide mids
About the Defense issue,You just need Phil Jones and Lukaku at CB and they will do the defending job! 👍🏻
