The way I see story is that it is a metaphor for a loved one with a incurable disease like leukemia. We all believe (or want to) that they will be the exception and survive, but fate is not always so merciful. 9:20 The scene of Amicia being choked to death continues off camera BTW, while the camera zooms on Hugo's face. Robyn Wolf, the actress for Amicia, portrayed Amicia struggle for her life very realistic, and when you go into photo mode during the zoom, and turn the camera around, you see the fear, panic, despair and rage in Amicia's face (the CGI model projects it in every detail, even up to Amicia's tongue sticking out) - which Hugo is directly looking at. You can see photos of it on the IMDB page of the game. I suspect it became a "deleted scene", because it was too intense that early in the game and they feared some might be put off seeing a teenager almost being killed by choking from two large men after 15 minutes.
17:32 I don't think you knew, but there is a book released last year (only available in french), a plague tale tenebris, set between innocence and requiem in which Hugo passes through the second threshold. 48:00 It's not an unknown reason. Lucas was never on the boat, when Amicia broke the chain and simultaneously destroyed the dock, Lucas got stuck on the other side of the river and had to find a way to get past the rats on that side to get to the lockgates. 02:11:25 If I can speculate, Beatrice and Lucas followed the tracks of Amicia and Hugo and found the pilgrims who had the map that would possibly show where la cuna is. From there it would be easy to find a boat to the island, as the player learns early on that traders from the mainland go there during bright days to do business. If you're interested, one of the devs, Olivier Deriviere, did a playthrough of the game with many insights of the story.
Late, but thanks for stating there's a book! I'd love to read it, though it's only in French as far as I can find. Is there an English version out there somewhere, or is it Google Translate all the way?
just finished the game, what an emotional roller coaster. my understanding of the origin of the Macula: - in ancient times, there was a plague/disease that killed many. a divine power manifested itself in the presence of a Phoenix, with the Phoenix's healing power and reincarnation, it helped the world and its people. but some religious heretics formed a cult - The Order and they wanted to control the Phoenix, in a horrible turn of event, the Phoenix was murdered - the rage and hatred towards humanity turned the Phoenix into a malignant being, hence the Macula was born. and it's healing power became a power of correption, it's reincarnation remained and it passed on from one carrier to another. the dream the Macula showed to Hugo, i believe it was where the Phoenix once resided and worshiped before its murder. and this is my only explanation for why the Phoenix symbol appears on everything that's connected to The Order.
2:47:49 Saying as a Hindu who studied Sanskrit and speaks Hindi, Oppenheimer was wrong in his translation of Shrimad Bhagvad Gita here. The word काल that he thinks means death is also the word used for time, because time is death. Death doesn't destroy worlds, but time does. Therefore, the more acceptable translation of the quote is "Now I've become time, the destroyer of worlds". Because even non-living entities aren't capable of surviving time.
I just finished this amazing game and I loved Hugo so much. He was a sweetheart and innocent being. He didn't deserve all suffering he had in his short life. This kid had more suffering than happiness. I wondered if anyone could really endure such suffering. The game isn't perfect, as none are, but the story is incredible, as sad as it is.
Beat this game in 24 hours of starting it, I knew it was gonna be heavy but when I finished. I didn't even have words to describe it, it hurt so badly. Some of the missing context between the two games likely came from the book that came out between the release of both games. The book is called A Plague Tale Tenebris and is currently only available in French.
Amicia is one of the most tragic video game characters I’ve seen she lost literally everything she could. Across two games you really feel her childhood innocence and humanity slowly slipping away. By the end of requiem she was completely broken and a shadow of the person she once was. I also feel like she cut her hair short at the end not only as a sign of her new self but also because her hair is a painful reminder of Hugo because he use to put flowers in it so she cut it all off
