Making Over My Cold Steel Survival Knife! Leather Working ASMR

- This is an addendum to my previous leathercraft video where I made a custom sheath for my Cold Steel Drop Forged Survivalist bowie knife. I decided I didn't like the grey coating and that the grip was just a little small for my hands. Citristrip paint remover and a brass brush made quick work of the coating (I let it sit overnight). I was pleasantly surprised the laser etched logos actually went into the steel and not just on the paint. I then wrapped the handle in 3-4 oz veg-tan leather with a little tooling. I actually like the knife's original grip texture, so cut slots in the leather so there would still be some there (albeit in very small windows).

Beautiful work, as always. Watch your videos five or more times , each time I learn something new.
Wow, thank you!
I always look forward to seeing your new projects. Beautiful work.
Thank you so much! . .. . and thanks for subscribing!
Beautiful! That sheath just ties it all together so freaking nicely.
Quadep
As always, excellent craftsmanship. Couldn't wait to see the new video. Didn't disappoint.
Glad you enjoyed it
THE KNIFE IS ABSOLUTELY INCONVENIENT, IMPRACTICAL, I DON 'T EVEN KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH IT .
Sounds like this isn't the knife for you then! Fortunately there's no shortage of options out there. A smaller folder perhaps?
Awesome work
Thanks again!
Beautifully designed and meticulously executed. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you very much!
Beautiful. That leather burnished beautifully under the pear shader, and I need to get some citrus stripper; I'm tired of peeling my oranges by hand.
lol. Thanks for watching!
Excellent idea to add value to a good knife! Thank you!
Incredible craftsmanship. I'm not sure why this popped up in my TH-cam feed but I am glad it did.
You now have a new subscriber.

Removing the black paint put on so many of today's ridiculous knives is the first corrective step.

Nice! I did a black one with a Buck 119 and it covered all the shiny spots on the handle and the halfguard. Its two pieces. Made a matching sheath for it also. Its all removable and can be put on again. Now its ready to ride at my side while deer hunting with no shine what-so-ever. Darn black bears are sneaky where I used to hunt. They'll be 2 steps behind you and most of the time people dont notice.
Mine wasn't anywhere near as nice looking as yours though. Great work and technique, planning and everything. As usual sir.
Thank you for a very enjoyable video!
The Buck 119 is a great knife. Have one myself. Thanks for watching!
Very nice
Thanks
Very cool.
Thanks for watching!
Damn fine job
Thanks!
this video gave me TONS of ideas!!! thanks much!

What? Leather covered grips for a revolver?
I only dream of doing such beautiful work! Great video as always!
Thank you very much!
you can do work like this! i knew nothing 4 years ago and this guy showed me how. he is a great teacher weather he knows it or not.
You can do it. Just don't be in a really big hurry to see the finished product. Thats my problem. Got to take time to plan and do the decorations on it.
@@minerblue9641 it is so difficult for em to do the carving and stamping. I just can't get it right at all.
@@jarodhall1910
Leave it all blank. Its functional and pretty nice looking with no carving or stamping also. Watch videos about doing stamping and carving. Its not as easy as it looks unless you're an expert. A novince may take up to 3 or 4 hours just to do the stamping straight, also do not expect perfection. You or anybody else will never achieve perfection. Practice on some scrap leather with your stamps. There are some stamps that are harder to use than others. Use the easy ones or no stamps at all.
But do watch some videos on casing leather and stamping. Its an aquired skill that is only gained with practice and dilligence to do everything accurately.
Leather work is very hard work at first, then it becomes pretty easy as you gain experience. I'm not talking about large projects. Those are pretty tough all the time.
Sharpen even new razors with a diamond stone if you have one avaliable. Harbor Freight sells stones at a very reasonable price. Sharpen even the brand new blades. I sharpen them anyway.
Don't expect leatherwork to be easy, focus on the finished product. You may have a difficult time for 7 or 8 hours and if you maintain your leather project it will last all your life. It may not look as pretty as it was when it was new but it will probably remain functuonal for a very long time.
FABULOUS
Thanks!
Nice work.

Thanks for watching! This was a personal project.
Yep your vary talented and it's nice to have a lot of good tools to work with. You could cold blue that one I did it to my Cold steel survivalist and it looks good. I'm not to far away from you off RT 20. Nice work I wish you well.
Cool idea. Thanks for watching!
Bravo! Greetings from Russia.

Bravo pour votre esprit de création!
thanks!
УХ-ТЫ!!!! Знатная работа!!!
Thanks!
Is there any time when you choose to deglaze your vegtan before any other steps and under what circumstances? Always a pleasure to see your work, thank you.
Thanks for watching! I didn't really need to soap up for this piece. I typically only case with glycerin saddle soap when I'm doing a lot of tooling. The soap helps lubricate the leather fibers. Makes it more pliable. This in turn helps a swivel knife glide through it better and for stamps to make better impressions.
Absolutely beautiful work! Thank you for showing the stitching process. Also, what brand of snaps do you use for the sheath's keeper strap around the hilt? I am looking for snaps that are very strong and will stay closed.
Thanks! I buy my snaps from Tandy Leather.
Super 💥💥💥👍👍👍
Thank you 👍
That is amazing
Thanks!
Really good work. I hope you put a clear coat on that metal so it doesn’t rust.
I haven't. I'll give it a coat of oil if I start having issues
yes, this type of steel can rust and that is why there is a coating.
👍 отличная работа. Высокое мастерство. Ноооо, возник вопрос. При применении этого ножа, допустим на рыбалке или охоте, мокрым-грязным рукам будет ли удобно работать с такой рукоятью ?
Thanks for watching. Hard to say. I've had similar leather wraps on walking sticks and on my compound bow. It's been oiled and has conditioner applied to keep it from drying out. But it will definitely stain and darken the leather over time, so don't fall in love with the color!
Excellent work as always. Where did you get your heavy wing dividers at? I need to upgrade my set to something more substantial.
Thanks for subscribing! Yes! Those are C.S. Osbourne 8" wing dividers. I bought that particular set from eBay. But you can get them on Amazon as well.
Following the 1993 Tombstone series, How about you making the Curly Bill Rig.
Beautiful work as usual...! 👍👍
I love your stitch hole punches.
Where did you get yours & what's the brand?
They're "Wuta" brand from Amazon. $30 for the set of two
Wow.. that reasonable price... thx again..
You made an „ugly“ knife beautiful

أحسنت شكرا يا فنان ما نوع الجلد المستخدم في هذا
Объясните пожалуйста процесс замачивания водой и седельным мылом, что это дает? И на какое время вы оставляете в пакете ?
It's called "casing" the leather and it preps it for tooling. Soaking in water softens the leather fibers and makes them more pliable. The saddle soap isn't necessary, but it lubricates the leather fibers and aids in the process.
Very cool handle mod…but now the whole piece needs some sort of rust protection solution, seeing as it’s 52100 steel.
I put a light coat of oil on it. It's an old-school knife now!
Do you do this for a living? You're work is sick. I'd love to have you do a knife or holster or both for me. So uniquely beautiful.
Thanks! I occasionally sell stuff on Etsy. But haven't had the bandwidth to take on custom projects.
Neat
Thanks for watching!
What are you using for a cutting/punching surface?
Thanks for watching! It's just a self-healing mat. I stamp on a granite block.
Is that saddle soap you use on the leather and then put it in a plastic bag?
Yes. It helps prep the leather for tooling.
Cmol and cool
Thanks for watching!
Looks a lot better than the original painted version. I don't like painted knives.
Thanks! Yeah, especially the factory grey they paint it . . . why not just paint it black?
What are you putting on the leather at 2:24 into the video? Curious.
Neatsfoot oil.. I think...
Looks like saddle soap
I honestly didn't look back at the time stamp... you are correct...
Thanks for subscribing! It's glycerin saddle soap.
Which cold steel knife was that to begin with?
It's their "Dropped Forged Survivalist"
Not a Big Knife Guy, But... "NICE WORK" ';-)

What color is the tiger thread? Natural? Yellow?
"Colonial Tan" It's not quite yellow, not quite brown.
@@RoadAgentLeather 1,2 mm?
What was wrong with the knife before?
I mention it in the video description. I didn't like the grey color and the handle was just a tad to small for my liking.
Sweeeet!
