  • We bought the Worlds Cheapest Fly Fishjng Combo ( rod & reel ) for $29.99 at Academy, which is even CHEAPER than Walmart branded OZARK Trail fly fishing rod and reel that sells for $40!!!! This could be the BEST VALUE on the market for a fly fishing kit and then we paired it up with fly fishing gear from Scheels, the worlds largest sports store, which has quite a large fly selection that we grabbed a handful to try fly fishing for bass in local ponds.

A few tips from a fellow fly fisherman:
    1. When you cast, keep your wrist stiff and mainly use ur arm to cast. Make sure the rod tip stays between 10:00 and 2:00 when you cast. That will help you get those tight loops.
    2. If you are looking for a bass fly fishing rod, go for an 8 weight. A 5 wt is a great option if you want to keep catching bluegill and maybe expand to trout as well
    3. You don’t need to ball out on a fly rod quite yet. As a novice caster, you will benefit from a less expensive fly rod and good line. THE LINE WILL MAKE MORE OF AN IMPACT. Spend your money on a nice, entry level combo and spend some extra money on some good line.
    4. You don’t need to use the reel when you are fighting fish. You can and it can be fun, but you can pull more line in faster if you pull the line by hand.
Good luck on our fly fishing journey!

The red yarn in your tackle box is for a “yarn indicator” typically white is the most used colour because it blends with in bubbles. Red might get strikes and without a hook it’s a little heart breaking when they try to eat it lol

@@ccatt93 you make a loop like a non-slip loop knot then put it 50/50 in there, cinch It closed and it should work fine

So what you're saying is you don't need to spend $600 to start fly fishing? As someone that's new to the sport, the elitism of some of the fly fishing stuff has really kind of detoured me from trying.

  • @travisworts6249

Hardly anyone on TH-cam fly fishes in ponds. It's mostly how to's and trout guys. Even though i dont have a place to fish trout bluegill and bass and crappie are so fun on a 5/6 weight fly rod. I have even tied my own flies with chicken feathers and thread and sealed with super glue. It doesn't take a big budget to start and making your own stuff is fun. For those who haven't tried fly fishing get you a budget combo for 40-50 bucks and go catch fish.

Weston, from an old guy who has fly fished all over the world (and own over 40 fly rods/reels), it is easier for most to get a PHd than to learn the basics of fly rods, reels, lines, leaders, flies and casting. My go to is GLoomis, but own Orvis and other top $$$ rods and reels. For bass I recommend the TFO Axxium II 7wt. That $60 Scheels reel is more than enough. tapered leaders are for throwing tight loops and delicate presentations. 6-8 feet of mono or floro will work just fine, Streamer is a term to describe a bait fish pattern, such as the clouser minnow. Orvis is a great product but $$$. The TFO is better bang for the buck. Go to a fly shop, watch a 1,000 casting vids (Tim Rajeff and Lefty Kreih). and learn to cast in the park.
If you ever get to NorCal in the fall hit me up. Friday I relocate to the Ca Delta for 2 months, chasing stripers on the fly. I can put you in my Vexus center console.

I got my 1st fly combo about 20 years ago at Dick's. It was a cheapie Pfleuger 5/6wt 3pc complete with line and a couple little flies thatI still use to this day. I mostly fly fish for panfish and small bass, since there aren't any wild trout streams in my area. (South Jersey) In 2020, my dad's best friend gave me a BARELY used Wright & McGill 3/4wt 3pc complete with the case. (He loved fishing, but never got the hang of fly casting.) I got a cheapie MaxCatch reel with line for Christmas of that year, along with a fly tying kit, and I cherish that rod like no other. (My dad's friend passed away last year.) I had only ever used my old Pfleuger combo before, so I never knew what I was missing. To be honest, I could see getting a suoer cheap combo like this for my 11yo son, so if he decides he doesn't like fly fishing anymore, I'm not out big bucks. I hope you keep up with the fly fishing, and have fun!

So I bought few Flies with fly boxes, now I got close to 300 Flies for cheaper price! So far I been catching fish off Flies I bought off Amazon, and it's good quality Flies 👌 😌 ☺️ 👍

Love the fly fishing content, a few suggestions. Try buying some buck tail, flashing, hooks and barrel jig heads and tie your own Clouser minnow steamers. They are the best IMO and easy to tie. The feeling that you have from tying your own fly and catching a good one is amazing. Also TFO is local to your area and make some good rods and reels and have a really good combo. Liked the popper catches at the end! Thx Westin

Also looking at some of the other comments. Seems the fly fishing community is made up of a great bunch of people. Some great info, tips and advice. Wes thank you so much for these fly fishing video’s. God bless.

Dont worry about letting bass get on the reel. Itll just give them more of a chance to get slack in the line and get off. Stripping them in keeps the line tight...Get yourself some clouser minnows. They will catch fish anywhere anytime. As you get into this more, look into tying your own flies. Nothing like catching them on something you tied. Good luck

I'm sure this has been said already and I just missed it, but on tighter water and especially with sinking flies, try a roll cast. The line dragging on the water loads the rod, then you just... roll it out. That's my preferred technique for any kind of wet flies, and particularly streamers.

When you strip set, use one quick yank towards your hip. There is always slack in the line, keep your rod tip low so when you get a fish on, your stripset doesn't have to work through as much slack. If you lift the the rod instead of strip set you will have to work through all the slack and may not seat the hook properly. The fish that got off didnt get hooked. Also, the reel isn't like conventional fishing, strip the fish in like you do a fly. if the fish takes out a lot of extra line and gets to the reel thats fine, then you can use the drag system on the reel. You will miss a lot of fish trying to "get them to the reel".

Get some boogle bugs for your poppers. Super high quality flies. Also, just strip retrieve your bass in. I only use my reel with saltwater species. Other than that, find a local fly fishing dedicated shop and skip out on all the big name stores including orvis till you get some more knowledge. Take casting lessons at the local fly shop, learn to tie your own flies, and jump into the culture!

Some quick tips (although im sure you know these by now)...lf your fishing for bass just use straight mono. I would use 12lb test or 14lb test, then you can fight them much harder and apply more pressure and will loose less fish. Also keep your light straight in the water, in the video I see too much slack. I pretty much have my rod tip touching the water everytime I fish, you want as little slack as possible so you can feel the fish take the fly. Expensive rod and reels feel better, but you can catch plenty of good fish on cheap gear. I have a bunch of cheap gear as well as a few more expensive ones. I catch about the same in both. Dont worry about the reel, its just a line holder. I fight the fish with the line, getting them on the reel is not necessary. ( this advice is all specific for bass fly fishing , NOT fly fishing in general)
