    It's funny how Dave is the outgoing talkative one now but during Nirvana Dave was the quiet one and Krist was the talkative one then and quiet now.
    Kurt's death took a big toll on Krist and it shows.

      ***** I grew up with Nirvana, I was there when the boom came.
      I remember then and now.
      Krist took the loss VERY hard and there's a guilt involved.

      miles2057 Krist still dreams about Kurt as he stated, he is really hurt by it.. you can see it in his eyes when he is talking about it, he isn't the same.. it's so sad

      I agree, but I'd say their career changes probably have a lot to do with it too. Kurt and Krist were tight, and Dave almost definitely felt like an outsider at certain points early on--then he became a frontman for his own successful band, which is likely what caused him to seemingly come out of his shell and become more outgoing. And don't forget that Krist went into politics after Nirvana happened--that most definitely changed him too. He had to maintain a degree of professionalism; no longer could he be making goofy, off-the-cuff anecdotes and flashing his dick to thousands of people (lol), which likely forced him to seemingly mellow out. But I love both versions of both of them, of course! XD

    I was 17 and grew up in the Seattle area when the grunge craze was in full effect. I got to see Nirvana in concert when they were on their In Utero tour. My friends and I even made it to the front of the mosh pit and had a clear view of them playing on stage. When the show was over, Kurt swung his guitar at the In Utero statue on stage and decapitated it, then picked up the head and started talking crazy to it. None of us realized it back then, but it was the last time they played a concert in the U.S. before heading to the European leg of their tour. To this day, it's still the most memorable show I've been to.

    • @johnf1586
      @johnf1586 7 ปีที่แล้ว +151

      José Aquino well Kurt died wen he was 27 and Krist is a yr older than Kurt. Krist would've been around 28 29 nearly in his 30s at that time. Dave was the youngest he was only 18 wen he joined nirvana and prolly would've been around 20, 21 at the time Kurt died. Krist didn't got old fast, he was actually getting old and would've been hard for him to star over again or establish him self with a new band at that age and time.

      He's a really down to earth guy. I met him a few times at a small shop I used to work at in Seattle. Ironically, the first time, I didn't instantly make the connection and for a moment, I actually thought about asking him if anyone ever told him he looked like Krist Novoselic. Only after he left did it dawn on me that maybe it was really him and I realized it was him for sure when I saw he had even left his name in our customer database previously to qualify for reward points.

      Dislike...pat was a legend punk rocker before nirvana, and foo fighters....look up darby crash, germs...ironically darby from the germs had heroine (i know its herion, but heroine, give it a life of its own, and she will kill you)issues of his own. I would love to know what pat thought going throuh the death of darby, to play with nirvana and have that inside thoughts and being able to see things that people on the outside did not...would LOVE to be able to hear or read about that, and it not be sugar coated or anything.

    I know Kurt hated all the fame shit. But I'm pretty sure wherever he is, he's celebrating. Congrats to nirvana!

    • @allixpeeke
      @allixpeeke 10 ปีที่แล้ว +57

      He was conflicted about fame. On the one hand, he wanted to be famous, but on the other hand, it caused a bit of an identity crisis in him in that he identified himself with his punk ethos and felt that he was defying his own punk ethos through embracing fame. He wanted to be famous, but he didn't want to want to be famous. He wanted to become famous in order to help promote that anarcho-punk ethos, but in becoming famous, he was defying the same punk ethos he wished to promote--thus, the conflicted feelings he had.
      As far as I'm concerned, the problem ultimately lies with the crypto-authoritarian nature of said punk ethos. A truly libertarian ethos should not be concerned with whether one becomes or wishes to become famous, but rather should merely be concerned with what one does with said fame.
      Because Cobain let his conflicted feelings about fame consume him and distract him from the things he truly enjoyed, like music, he found himself less able to enjoy music, art, and the general act of creating, which, to a large extent, was his downfall.
      As to how Cobain would feel about knowing he's being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I think he would appreciate the recognition he and his friends are receiving, but that he would care a bit more about the kid who, after searching through his parents' old record collections, is just discovering Nirvana for the first time, discovering the great music, and thinking, "Wow, this is great stuff. I should try to form a garage band of my own!" To be recognised is great, but to inspire is sublime.

    • @lamentate07
      @lamentate07 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      allixpeeke Young American kids that grew up in the suburbs don't kill themselves because of punk ideals mate. He was a severely depressed individual. He suffered from manic depression i believe. That is more likely the explanation.

    I used to listen to nirvana religiously and I thank them for making my youth somewhat special but every time I see krist I remember how he was and that was a really happy smiling goofy guy and since Kurt died the very little tv presence krist has had since he look tired and miserable and shy.
    It's sad to see how much the death of his friend has affected him.i guess he was like family.
    Dave on the other hand is such an optimist and chilled out guy all the time that he must be able to somehow hide it and I remember when he would literally walk out of an interview if he was asked about Kurt.
    But hey they are chatting and joking and telling stories of Kurt and not shying away too much from "the" subject at all.
    Thanks guys I'm sure I can speak from a lot of people on here and in the world and say you truly are legends and inspirations to all of us.
    Thank you

      It seems where Krist had taken it hard and withdrawn, Dave was shook in a way that had the opposite effect.
      I know after my first friend's death, I completely changed in a similar manner because I held on to the shock of suddenly losing someone and realized that anyone you cross paths with could be gone in the blink of an eye, so why not give them moments they can look back on fondly.. You never know what's going through someone's mind, a kind smile or friendly chat can go a long way for someone struggling where we can't see.
      But that's just my take on things honestly, only they know how it effected them and we can only see the changes they show us.

See if you can find an interview of Neil talking about Kurt... sounds like they'd fallen out of touch a bit, Neil was thinking over what to say in a phone call, and then he heard the news. In all these years they've kinda come to terms with Kurt's tragic death at a level I didn't expect. Now they remember and talk about the funny things and the sweet side of Kurt, instead of being haunted by the sad loomy memories of the days that led to his death. I think this is the right way to pay homage to the guy. He was tormented, yes, but also a gentle, funny, heart-warming kid. Very few acknowledge that nowadays, they just do him justice this way. Stupendous interview, great human beings, I'm sad and happy at the same time. We need this kind of genuine musicians to look up to in these days of plastic popstars.

      To their immense credit, Dave and Krist are always very gracious of the fans and very respectful of Kurt's memory, agreed. I think this is because they genuinely cared for and respected Kurt while he was alive, and because they both have a sense of how lucky they are to have had not only the personal success that they've enjoyed, but also to have been a part of something (NIRVANA) that has affected so many people across the world. Rather than allowing the success and adoration to inflate their egos, they seem genuinely humbled by it, and they couldn't come across as a nicer pair of dudes, to boot. So glad I'm a Nirvana fan :)

    Nirvana was definitely a game changer. I knew this, because I went to a predominately black school, and rap reigned, but when It Smells Like Teen Spirit emerged, the kids in my school knew the lyrics. I think they weren't into the Hairband era, so when Nirvana was one of the most popular Grunge bands, it was different and just cool.

    • @Goldpilar
      @Goldpilar 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      How long has rap been as huge as it still is now? I'm just asking cause of your comment about how rap reigned already back when "Nevermind" came out. Back around 1990, rap itself was still relatively new, right? I wouldn't know, I wasn't alive yet, but I'm very curious to hear from the perspective of a person who was a teen then.

    • @rondareefer213

      Goldpilar Rap is over 30 years old. Rap in the early 90s was its Alternative era, with groups like Tribe Called Quest and the Jungle Brothers being very popular at the time. So, i guest it was the era of Alternative music, Rock or Rap. Anyway, I was surprised, that coming from a predominately black school, some of the kids that I grew up with, which were mostly Hip Hop heads, liked Nirvana. I loved Nirvana, but I was a Pearl Jam fan. LOL.

    • @Goldpilar
      @Goldpilar 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cool. Thanks for answering. Yeah, to be honest, I was never much of a hip-hop head either, but growing up in NY, hip-hop has been around me my whole life, so I guess I might as well look into its history a bit. I've seen some documentaries that point to the late '70s as its beginning, but thanks for the info. you gave me. Its good getting a perspective of a person who lived the '80s, '90s era. . I was born in the early '90s, so by the time I was in elementary school, it was already the Eminem, 50 Cent era. Personally though, I'm a really a rock head. I listen to classic rock, heavy metal and Alternative music as well now and then depending on the mood I'm in. The '90s was a very interesting decade because it was the official alternative age. Anything goes artistically and creatively at that time. There was a lot of great experimental music both in rock and hip-hop, as well as in new emerging genres like Techno and so forth. I wish I was older so I could have experienced more of the creative music eras. Growing up in the 21st century is so limiting, except for the fact that we have the internet. Thank God for that or my generation would be completely ignorant.

    • @rondareefer213
      @rondareefer213 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Goldpilar Life changes, that is just the part of life, and if you didn't have the internet, there are books. And look up Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five and you can go even further with Gil Scott Heron aka The Godfather or Rap, spoken word or course a different type of poetry is how rap began. Anyway keep listening to good music and enjoy the 21st century, more changes to come. Take care.

    • @Goldpilar
      @Goldpilar 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    AHHH. This interview gives me the urge to watch the Foo Fighters documentary Back and Forth again.. as the 1st bit of it contains quite a bit of Nirvana stuff!

      I'm kinda the same way. I don't dislike the Foo's but not a favorite band but I love Dave. He's a rock star in every sense but he is still really down to earth. A couple of years ago he fell off stage during a show and broke his leg. They took him back stage and stabilized his leg so they could take him to the hospital. Instead, Dave had them carry him back on stage and prop him up in a chair so he could finish the show. That's just the dedication he has to his band and fans.

      +Angel of Death Yeah I think most if not all of that album were songs Dave wrote for the next Nirvana album himself as Kurt was elsewhere on heroin and not interested in Nirvana etc, not turing up to rehearsals etc..

    Krist is not human, he is so humble and natural. Everething seems to be happening into a house of a friend with nobody watching. Unreal. I never seen a rock star like that, not even Kurt when he was alive, he knew he was famous and people was looking at him, but Krist is like really no care a s.. if 1 or 1 millon people are listening at him. what a great soul. Love him

    Amazing how things happen for a reason. If Kurt didn't die, there may have never been a Foo Fighters. The same with Dave Mustaine and Megadeath if Metallica never gave him the boot. I know there are a ton of other examples, those are just two that popped into my head.

      I very much doubt that Kurt Cobain's death was destined to happen so that the Foo Fighters can exist.

      moonlily1 That's a bit of a leap...seriously, major conspiracy theories.

      Brandon Dollar
      I don't think it's a conspiracy theory. I'm commenting, to be clear, on the ridiculousness of applying "everything happens for a reason" to kurt's death leading to the formation of the Foo Fighters. If there's a higher power with a master plan, I doubt that power would look at a man's life and decide he must die because the world needs the Foo Fighters. It was a stupid comment. Things happen, and other things happen in their aftermath, but that doesn't make it destiny or part of a master plan. That's what I'm saying.

    coolest moment of the Entire interview: Dave nonchalantly saying of guitars "they're hard to break". how many people have had enough experience at that in their life that they can speak on it, not with authority, but with a casual offhand comment. He is one of the last remaining great rock and rollers...
