I don't think it was a bad movie.... I just feel like people are judging it even if they don't see it, because it has this fantasy topic... I love the books and I love the movie, despite the fact that it is not completely true to the book, I still like it. After the trailer to the TV Show, I am really scared that it will be a crap... I am really sorry they didn't make enough money to continue with movies...

I watched the movie 1 year before reading the books and I thought it was just fine. I still do. And the cast offered me the best Clary and the best Jace to imagine throughout the books.

I pictured Clary's hair to look like Lily's in the movie, not the other strawberry blondish colour, and I loved the actors for this movie. Personally, the tv show sucks and i feel that we were all too judgemental about the movie! I loved the movie and wished they came out with another movie, i really wanted to see who they would have casted for Sebastian because he's my ulti-fav character in this series

Both did certain things better. The movie did Valentine better. The show does Alec and Clary better. The movie gets Magnus right in looks but the show gets him right in personality and character. The film captured the feel of the settings much more accurately and depicted New York as the destitute out-of-the-way place Shadowhunters consider it to be, with a dusty old institute run by disgraced exiles, and not a weird hi-tech crowded war hub for no reason. But the show has fun concepts and more accurately captures the allegiances and world, which to be fair, any show could do better than a movie because of time constraints. I like both versions of Isabelle, Clary, and Simon. I'm weirdly attached to Hot!Hodge over book-accurate old Hodge, but I could've done with his ravens, herbs, and garden being incorporated. The show has better music, let's not lie. And more commitment to portraying the gay characters accurately and not watering them down for any potential homophobes in the audience, which often makes it feel like it has more integrity. Honestly the key difference is that the show feels like it was made for fans, and the movie feels like it was made to create fans. The show feels more like a gift to the fandom, but I hope we get another adaptation some day, third time is the charm, right?
I agree with you on most part but I think that Lily Collins and Jamie portrayed way better the personalities and essences of the book characters. Also, they indeed didn't give a big role to MALEC but it's totally normal because MALEC doesn't really exist in the first book.@@KaiInMotion

Okey, so the movie wasn't like the book, but I still loved it! I started reading the books after watching it and I actually don't mind that the storyline in the movie was (in some way) changed. This movie still is one of my favourite ones and it will always be! I'm really excited about the tv show but I'm really going to miss Lily as Clary and Jamie as Jace! They were just the perfect Clary and Jace even TO ME. Even if Lily's hair wasn't the right colour! I really hope you guys are going to watch this movie! And if you are one of these people who wants the movie to be exactly like the book then you should watch it before start reading those. Bye
When you read the books you didn't get the chance to picture them perfectly because you had the idea for lily and jamie stuck in your head, they aren't the perfect clary or jace.

As someone who's read all the shadowhunter books i can say with ABSOLUTE certainty that the movie is MUCH better than the show. I'm sorry but it was perfect from casting to storyline, although i know that a few things were changed in the movie like the ending but they still made it quite accurate to the first book.
I also adore the cast (all of them) if i'm being honest, i know that people like Matthews Alec more cause of his looks & cause they got malec but to me he didn't give off Alec like Kevins did. Kevin looked older than a teenager yes but his aura and acting truly made me think of Alec from the books. Part of this has also to do with the bad writing in the show cause they made both the Lightwood siblings a lot nicer with Clary than they actually were, like it took them 3 books to actually become friends and love each other but in the show they made Izzy act all cheerful besties with Clary from the very start when she wasn't anything like that and don't even get me started on the parabatai bs.
I personally would have switched show Izzy with movie Izzy cause show Izzy looked a lot more accurate to her description with the dark hair and dark eyes. What i liked about the movie actress is that she just like Kevin got the character right but like i said before this also is the fault of bad writing in the show. Someone who they did cast really well was the actor for Magnus in the show, he was really good.
The rest of the cast is absolutely perfect like Simon, Hodge, Jace, Clary, Valentine, Luke, Jocelyn, Magnus etc looked exactly like i imagined them to look. I remember a lot of people complaining that Valentines actor looked too hot for his character and that he didn't have silver hair but Valentine has ALWAYS been described as a handsome musculair man with a youthful face so i don't know where they got that from? I do think that they should've sticked to the silver hair but who knows they tried and it might have looked really bad but despite that the actor absolutely killed it as the villain.
It's been ten years and i'm still so upset that we won't ever get a second movie, and it also won't be the same without Godfrey.

I don't know , I just peeked into the first episode and found it so horrible , especially the grafic effects D: Also I really don't like the new Clary she seems so girly, Clary from the movie seemed much stronger and selconfident. It always depends, just my opinion. Just reading the book and will rewatch the movie today but I am very dissapointed from the series :(

I remembered this trailer almost 10 years later. Have been trying to remember the title since then. I just found it today by going through movies released in 2013. That was a treasure hunt. I never was able to go see the film.

The book is supposed to INSPIRE for a movie - they're NOT THE SAME. Of course the directors had to change the plot. How can you put 600 pages in a movie with the length of 2 hours?
And what really bothers me is the fact that you guys complain about Lily and Jamie. They did a great job there, and it's not fair that most of you grouse about Clary's hair colour because it doesn't have the right tone. I mean, seriously? How can you know if this is the right colour or not? ..
Personally, I loved the movie. Mostly because the actors were great and the animation was a BOMB. I didn't like the end either but in my opinion a movie is only as good as the actors themselves. I watched the TV Show, too, and honestly I'd prefer the movie of City Of Bones before anything else.

(I for one knew him from sweeney todd and new moon), but I have to agree that the hate is kinda annoying. I also preferred pattyfer cause he seemed perfect for that role, but Jamie is good actor and really not that bad looking.

This literally was the best book adaptation I've ever seen. Yes, a few minor details are left out, but that happens when you have to squeeze three hundred pages into two hours. Seriously, it was probably the best film I've seen all year, and totally one hundred percent worth it!

I absolutely loved the movie and thought the characters were better represented as compared to the show. Clary actually represents a strong, independent young women instead of the screaming, crying, defenceless girl. All I'm saying is that I loved the movie and thought Jace was perfect.

For all the people who are hating on this movie how about you stop. This is my favorite book series you people get on my nerves. Maybe you would like the movie better if you read the book. This series is the best series iv ever read and it pisses me of when people start hating on it. Don't act like a real fan okay. You probaly barley understand the movie. And they changed alot of things about the movie its almost nothing like the book. They even gave spoilers from the next books in this series. When Clary drew that rune. I don't know what you're all talking about... I have read the book and this movie was perfect! Jamie Campbell Bower was the best person to play Jace and the acting all around was spot on... I have watched it twice in the space of a couple of days because it's sooo good! PS- Jace is really really not ugly, he is beautiful. I'm glad he had more rugged features than the average pretty boy actor because he is meant to be fierce and tough-looking... this is how he was in the books!
Well, I have to admit that I had my prejudices to this movie. I've read the books and I love them and after reading ratings I didn't know what to expect. The story went first really fast and it wouldn't have bothered me if I hadn't read the books. And the storyline differed from the book's one, so sometimes that bothered me also. I'm not saying that I could have done better job, I know how hard pleasing people can be. You can't please everyone and it's a sad truth.
But in the end, I liked it. Simon's, Izzy's and Magnus' actors are great! They blowed me up and I really enjoyed watching them. I don't get the hate what this movie gets.

Ugh, I swore I was not going to watch the series of this because I saw the movie first and just starting to read the books, I see this cast for the characters I'm reading. Jamie Bower is absolutely the embodiment of Jace but I've gotten so far ahead of the story in the movie, I've gotten curious. I don't know if I'll be able to get very far in the TV series - it's already kinda annoying me in just a few minutes

The book is totes hilare [in case you dont know what totes hilare is:] totaly hilarious but it has it's fair share if action and supernatural and I can't for get the romance!!!

alicia.k bhandal What did you think of the movie? I have read the first book and was considering watching it. I know that books are always better than the movies but the trailer looks very different from the books.
To those who don't understand why some of us are upset with the movie: they changed alot. And some things were changed needlessly. Admittedly you can be upset about small changes (like physical descriptions being off, Clary's multiple runes, wrong demons being used) but that isn't what ruins the movie. What ruins the movie and makes things upsetting is changing larger things or changing things needlessly (the first third of the movie has scenes in a different order for no reason).
And alot of the big things that got changed actually demolished the important ideas it's meant to cover. Clary did not kill the "ravener" (in quotes because the demon was a Dahak) and did not fight the vampires or Valentine. This completely undermines Clary's heroic traits and causes her to be seen as more of a mary-sue than a real hero. This is encouraged even more in scenes where the words coming out of Clary's mouth make her seem to be a girl who needs validation from others rather than thinking and standing up for herself. Taking away the fight between Luke and Valentine takes away from their roles as foils and the familial themes associated with them (i.e. when Luke is caught of guard because he hears Clary and Jace and turns to make sure their ok while Valentine does not).
The climax was terrible. It doesn't make sense to me is how Valentine didn't end up getting the mortal cup. Reason A) He was supposed to. B) Why not grab Clary's arm and pull it out of the portal. Her reflexes aren't fast enough that she would have let go before letting go would be pointless. He could have backhanded her to the floor and gotten the cup so easily. C) The portal doesn't work where she can think of somewhere and Valentine won't be able to reach it. The portal is a door: it only goes out one place at a time so even if she did let go he could simply think of nowhere and the portal will send her out wherever the cup went. D) After she pulled it out of the tarot card it wouldn't be there anymore. She literally pulled it out and would not be able to put it back in and the card would be blank.
They ruin characters by giving them conflicting character traits or writing them one-dimensionally. One second Jace won't attack Valentine and the next he's attacking him for no apparent reason. We understand Valentine is evil but what caused /Jace/ to change his mind? Also, the way scenes are cut by the end you don't really grasp the nature of Alec's relationships with Jace and Clary. Alec and Jace are parabatai (for those of you who didn't read the books this is very important). It means the two of them have their souls tied together. When one get's hurt the other can feel it. When Abbadon almost kills Alec, Jace can feel him dying. Alec doesn't dislike Clary because he's being jealous (not entirely at least), he's worried about Jace getting hurt. Then there's Isabelle. Isabelle is meant to being secure in her fighting and her beauty, but not in her femininity and her appeal to others romantically (romantically not sexually). She doesn't want to be just a warrior with a pretty face. She wants someone to love her (as in not her body). She wants to be capable of being a good housewife and a good mom and the only place you get even a taste of that is during Clary's makeover. One character change that irritates me is making Hodge into a good guy at the end. He attempts to murder Clary. She is saved by Luke who almost kills him but doesn't because his main focus was Clary who was heavily injured and needed help immediately. He left Alec for dead. He knocked Jace unconscious and sold him to Valentine. He doesn't deserve to be a good guy at the end. It's not him.
The movie also may be funny and have romance and action, but it lacks alot in how it's written. Having Valentine admit to Hodge that Clary and Jace aren't siblings would affect future movies negatively because it takes away the concept of familial love being the purest form of love and incest being the most evil because it is a perversion of the purest (It's kind of the main theme of the whole series. Legitimately. Not shitting you at all. It's not about romance or humor). The movie also takes away from themes like racism, religion, and the movie doesn't really get in to any child abuse. They also took away accounts of foreshadowing, and almost all of the allusions. In all honesty, the movie is written just as terribly as twilight.
shakalak a While I see what you're trying to say as far as they say less about the feelings, but it only seems like it because you're no longer reading it through someone's perspective. In all actuality the ratio of time they spend going on about romance in the movie is noticeably more than in the books.
kim tormon It's a movie made from a book. It's not inspired by it, it is the book. Having a book as an inspiration means you took an idea and ran with it. The Hunger Games novels were inspired by Theseus and the Labyrinth. It took the idea of the sacrifice of 7 teenage boys and seven girls to be sacrificed for the government and tossed into an "arena" and only being helped by a person of higher authority could save you. "Inspired by" doesn't mean you took someone's authentic ideas, characters and plot and making it your own. If you claim their meant to be viewed as different things than this would be considered plagiarism and it would be illegal. And for future reference you can be less rude about disagreeing with someone.
I just watch this now and it feels like I've lost a hundred years by not watching this movie earlier. Mygosh where am I?! This movie is amazing huhuhu I can't accept the fact that the series based from the book was not continued because of bad reviews like wtf?! Everything about this movie was a masterpiece huhu, the producers could have continued making this huhuhu...
P. S. I cant watch the Shadowhunter series cause no one could be a perfect Clary and Jace except the movie actors huhuhu. The movie Jace is better no one can change that

I noticed this when i re watched the movie, but when Clary's picking the cards, as soon as the card is lifted into her hand you can see the magnet in her hand before the camera goes back to her.

This movie is the worst movie ive ever seen. i saw it 10 minutes ago from now and god i wanted to go online and just write this somewhere.
My fucking soul was scared by how bad this movie was, as i feel my lifeforce leave me every second i forced myself through this as i had nothing ells to do and trying to laugh the pain away as i watched the bad bricks this movie was build on every second of this film.
As i spent 10 minutes after the movie trying to comprehend the amount of shit my eyes consumed during this films minute-long shitfest i started to wonder if my life ever will have a meaning again. I feel my body leave the earth and my mind numb as i realised that i just wasted my unvalued time watching this movie instead grinding my manhood in mortel, as i would probably find more pleasure in destroying my family line than watching this movie ever again or any of its sequal.

I thought Jace would look, maybe a little sexier, NOT saying the person who plays him isn't. Clary's hair is not as red as I thought it would be. No one but Simon really looks like I thought they would. But, not bad, movie looks like it'll be good.

Somebody referred to TID (The Infernal Devices, the prequel series to The Mortal Instruments, aka TMI) having a bad ending. It's a cliffhanger. The TMI characters meet Tessa and Jem in City of Heavenly Fire (Look up spoilerly stuff-Clary's mom introduces Tessa, and Isabelle asks when Brother Zachariah. aka Jem, got hot, showing his return as a human).
Watched this movie out of pure boredom and I LOVED IT! Now I'm reading all the books and can't wait for the next movie to come out! I really don't understand how people don't like this movie? And the cast is great...especially Jace(:

I don't understand why people are criticizing this movie so much. So because Twilight had vampires and ware wolves, no other movie can ever have it? If I remember correctly, this book was written before twilight. And it has other supernatural creatures as well like shadow hunters, wore locks, witches... The action is great. I love how pretty much the whole movie is action based and how there is some romance. In my opinion this movie should have been the next big thing.
If anybody watched the movie and read the books, you'll get this comment. In a scene with Hodge and Valentine in the movie, they talk about Sebastian/Jonathan and how it would be wrong to lie to Jace. Awesome book reference :D

I really advise you to see this movie in theaters because if you don't you'll regret it. It is absolutely amazing. I know it is more expensive than watching the movie online but it's totally worth it. Seriously go check it in theaters
