Hoover Dam Hot Springs Hike: Arizona

  • Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #357
The hike to Arizona Hot Springs on the Colorado River in Black Canyon, by the Hoover Dam, isn't easy -- people die attempting it every year! Aside from a confusing trail and a sketchy metal ladder you have to climb, it also gets REALLY hot down there...so much so that the Park Service closes the trail between Memorial Day and Labor Day. My friends and I hiked it just after the trail reopened in October...then camped at Kingman Wash, and cruised around Lake Mead to the Hoover Dam to check out the low lake levels.

We used traffic cones during floods to fill sand bags for elderly citizens of the town I worked for. Any older or handicapped person could get as many sandbags filled by the public works crews as they needed. We also delivered the bags to their homes if they didn't have family to help them. Makes me feel good knowing others have learned this little trick.

You ought to come down to the magic circle before the crowds hit. Weather is perfect now and the full moon made for ghostly cool early evening strolls the last couple of nights. Only around 30 campers over the area presently. Oh, they don't have stickers to sell just yet, so it's free right now.

Wonderhussy superpowers: Can hike anywhere in flip flops. Can wear huge sunglasses on the tip of her nose. Can soak naked in any water. Find stuff for her next costume in the desert. She knows where the middle of nowhere is. Is absolutely immune to hantavirus.
Weakness: She is on a budget

1978-79 I was 16 yrs old and a friend heard about these hot springs, Three pools springs I think. We piled in a pickup and headed to AZ side. We drove off the hwy on a sorta path and drove as far as we could then hiked the rest. It was an awesome day. Unfortunately when we got back to the truck it would not start. We had to hike back to the hwy and hitchhike back to Vegas. We were at least 6 ppl and a guy in a van picked us all up and took us right to our neighborhood, Paradise Village townhomes at Tropicana and Eastern
Good times. Think this was my last day working at Micky D's as i was a no call no show lol.

I did that hike heading back from Henderson to PHOENIX. I was by myself, boogieing along. I think i just had my camelback. It was several years ago. I also camped at Lake Mead and went boating with some people i met because they needed a rider so they could go waterskiing. I was laying out at Lake Mead in my bathing suit and there was a stalker watching me lay out. He was staying in a motor home out there and was really weird so i left.
