Thoroughly enjoyed todays blog, Cathy! You had me laughing during your Diamond Head excursion, and your wonderfully humorous comments! You’ve shown us the fun and funny side of you, which I suspected was there all along. I felt the humidity, and also felt it zapping away your strength as you walked up the trail. Local girl from Maui here but have traveled extensively to other islands. I was hoping you would eat local food at some mom and pop restaurants and visit some cultural sites. ‘Iolani Palace (Hawaii 50 HQ 😂) is sacred ground to Hawaiian people. The history of the Hawaiian islands is fascinating.

Oh Cathy, that remark was to funny, “at least when I go, I’ll be in a cute outfit”. I went to Diamond Head but did not climb to the top, because of my knees. I went in 2002 with my youngest daughter and her high school band. They played at Pear Harbor. We did the international market there, Polynesian Cultural Center for a Luau. We’d eat breakfast at the hotel as is was part of our package, open to the beach with birds visiting our tables 😂( some people didn’t like that), loved that. The breeze and the sound of the waves was wonderful to eat our breakfast. That island was absolutely gorgeous and we were trying to figure out how we could stay there😂. I’m sorry the weather wasn’t nice and you hurt your knee. Sounds like my of of luck. 😊❤
If I was on Oahu during a tropical storm I’d just go to the Alamoana mall. My daughter was on Oahu at the same time as you were. She stayed at the Hilton. Anyway, she texted me to say there were three Louis Vuitton boutiques in the area and that there were over one hundred stores at the Alamoana mall. After I saw all the history, I’d go to the mall.

Good advice about the boat ladders. I always check them out now to make sure they are easy to use. Some also have narrow steps so really easy to slip off the step. Make sure they support your whole foot safely! 😊
Very cool to see an ocean sunfish, or mola. They are a pretty rare "see." I got to see one once when we were living on Bonaire.
I'm very sorry you had an injury and the weather didn't cooperate. (Next time, book a massage when that happens!) I've been to Oahu twice. I like that it has something for everybody, but Ithink next time we'll try Maui.

Hi Cathy, thanks for sharing Hawaii trip!! I loved going to Maui and Oahu, climbing diamond head, Dole plantation & cannery tour, USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor. Another great place during the rain is the Hilo Hattie factory - home of the largest Aloha shirt, great place and they hemmed in store my muumuu!! Sorry about your knee and feel better soon ❤.
What a fantastic trip report! I’ve always wanted to go to Hawaii. My husband went to a conference at that exact hotel a few years ago, small world! You had me in stitches with your review of the hike - I could feel your pain, and oh the humidity….yikes, but it was so relatable and I literally laughed out loud at your remarks 😂 Such a shame you were under the weather and injured your knee - gosh, there’s never a good time for that, but this rotten timing. I absolutely love Oahu! My daughter lives there!!!! When I was there last summer we didn’t have a lot of humidity! I like in Arkansas and we have dangerous humidity!!!!

The best thing to do in Hawaii is to lounge on the beach, drink Mai Tais, and eat seafood. But on Oahu, you have to go to the Dole Pineapple farm. The ice cream is fantastic!

I can relate! I twisted my knee once on vacation, it hurt the whole time and all the walking through the hotel and airport was hard on me. I would have skipped the volcano hike! Thanks for all the trip advice.

Keeping local people off public beaches comment….I am from Long Island NY and every year tourists try to keep those of us born and raised off the beaches. It’s a constant battle.
We pay the taxes, belong to organizations that protect the beach and marine life. These organizations also have beach clean ups picking up all the garbage on the beach left behind by tourists who visit briefly.
Yes! You did it! You didn't give up and quit! I am that way too, once in a lifetime chance, just get through it, cross it off the bucket list :) Very nice video, thanks for sharing your adventures!

I’ve been to the big island, Maui, and Oahu. The big island is my favorite. Hawaii is so beautiful because it does rain every day. We laid out on the beach in Oahu and it would rain but soon clear up. I enjoyed it because it helped cooled me off. You guys should’ve went to a luau that was a lot of fun in my opinion . We also did a sailboat which was quite exciting to say the least.
All water activities were canceled due to the Kona.

I am surprised you did not visit the Polynesian Cultural Center. I have heard that it is one of the best things to do on the island of Oahu

lol. You listed the website for the knee brace you wore. I just found that funny. I have terrible problems with my hair and humidity. Tends to stand on end. I was actually looking to see what foundation you are wearing in this clip. You look great.
Maybe you went at the wrong time of year? In March, you can see the whales migrating, so amazing. Getting a burger and watching the surfers at the North Shore is fun too.
It was just a fluke storm, but we still made the best of it and enjoyed ourselves.

Wow. You sounded miserable. I loathe Oahu…. Maui is nice though, but not worth the travel time, and time change. Look into the Virgin Islands, they are absolutely stunning, and so much closer to home, no time change for us either. We live on coastal New England. If I remember correctly, it is a 3 1/2 hour flight to paradise!
I don’t understand why these excursion boats don’t have longer ladders! It’s ridiculous. It’s the easiest thing to do.
I vote for Big Island next. Get an Air B&B and rent a car(a car is a must). My family lives there and it’s my happy place!

I laughed so hard at several different things you said and did and I can’t tell you…I needed that ❤ The king’s name is ( spelling it phonetically) King Ka MAY uh MAY uh. 🎉 When I lived there 49 years ago ( gosh can you believe it)? the city was just a small one. At 17, I walked the streets freely and with little fear. And yes! The drivers were polite then too. I guess they really have to be with all of the tourists. The main drag I believe was 4 or 5 lanes, both sides even then. The picture of all the people after one of your excursions was really good of you! Was that your daughter in I think the black suit to your right? And on your advice, I ordered a Lands End rash guard and a pair of swim shorts. The top is a green & navy print and the shorts are navy. I really think I’m going to like it! 🎉 I live in Kentucky in what they call the Ohio Valley. I live with humidity all summer long and believe me, you never get used to it! So glad you made it back safe and sound. Until next time~ S

Such a shame the weather was so bad. You seemed to make the best of it, despite the obstacles! I've stayed at that Sheraton several times - great position on the beach. People surfing at the North Shore are amazing - if a little crazy. Hope you can get to some of the other islands another time - I love Kauai & Maui - far less touristy. I know you've been to Greece and Italy, but have you thought about Bali or Thailand?

We took our time with frequent stops for photos and to rest, it took about 90 minutes.
I’m sorry you had bad weather, but still got to do a lot of things. Isn’t the “Hawaii 5-0 headquarters” the Iolani Palace? Did you get to go inside? It’s very cool. Hawaii is definitely a paradise for active outdoorsy folks. And the food is fantastic. Each island is unique, so you should plan visits to the rest of them too!

It’s such a pity that you had a storm and knee problems. I hope been having knee problems for the past 2 years. Originally my GP thought it was bursitis but I have been having physio on it and it’s getting worse. I am pretty sure it’s going to end with another knee replacement. I have had the opposite one replaced and it was horrendous and it also means being in rehab for 6-8 weeks and with the issues of looking after my father that is a big problem.
On a happier note, I would love to go to Hawaii, when I can walk further than the letter box, and the Sheraton is one of the hotels I have been looking at as I stayed in the one in Hong Kong many years ago and it’s one of my top 3 hotels so far. It was really helpful to hear your thoughts about it. Just one question. Is it very busy and hard to get a seat at breakfast or beside the pool? I have heard that about other hotels in Honalulu.
Hi, the adult only pool was difficult to find a chair when the sun was out. 😊 I didn't visit the family pool except for going in the hot tub once and it was pretty busy. You can rent a chair with umbrella, but they were very expensive. Lots of seating for breakfast when we were there.
I’m glad you made it to the top. Because even if I ever make it to Hawaii. I will not be walking up there. I’ll probably never make it to Hawaii anyway. But I will just stay by the pool. I don’t like the ocean. I might go on land and visit places. I’ll let my husband drown in the ocean. He loves the ocean, and I don’t. When we go to Florida I will walk along the beach. But I don’t like to go in. Don’t come to Georgia, the drivers here stink. Especially around Atlanta. I live a few hours away. And I don’t go near there. We very seldom even get on the highway down here. I hope your knee is feeling better. I would have had to be shoved up too. Well, I probably wouldn’t have gotten in the water.
Most hotels will hold your luggage at the front desk from check out time to leaving for your flight. I’ve never had to pay.
