  • Yemeni Jews singing and dancing: A performance of the Yemenite Troupe.
Here is a "simple" translation of the Yemeni Dialect part--I need help with the Hebrew part (some words are translated based on the way the performers pronounce them, which is in some parts "questionable")
Note: the words in parentheses are added for clarification:

Down (the hill or mountain) I went
    To the stream
    To water my horse--
    My foot slipped
And I fell into the water.
    I went to propose (engagement)
    But they rejected me,
    (and) my "qat" (a stimulant)
    And the "mada3ah" (water-pipe)
Although I'm the son of a Chief
    The son of a Jew.
    I went to propose
Carrying my qat and the mada3ah
    But the bad guys
    Made a fool of me.
Sweet heart and the apple of my eye
    Tell those who made you
    Think bad of me:
Who of you would entertain me?
    From the early dawn
    She got angry with me
    And went cry--
Got angry--oh darkness (of the night)
Out of sight is my beloved.
For a year and two months,
    Never returned.
    Alas people
    She left
    And deserted me.
    To whom shall I complain,
    And would understand me?
    Before whom shall I cry,
    And would pity me?
    And who of you
    Would entertain me.

Yemen is an ancient land where different communities coexisted beside each other for centuries. Sunni Muslims lived side by side with Shiite Muslims and with Jews as well as other foreign communities like the Indian and the Turkish. So sad to see what Yemen have come to

I’m a Yemenite Jew. In fact they did not live side by side. Jews like all other ethnic minorities under Muslim Arab rule were subjected to Dihmmi status. Second class citizens or lower. With limitations of were they could live, profession, basic human civil rights, laws that humiliated them and served as reminder of their lower status. And had to pay a Jizya tax to not be killed. Yemenite jews are peaceful people and just learned to live under these limitations but don’t be deluded to think they were treated as equals.

Blame the last century of nationalism and the borders drawn by the west. Muslims lived with Jews and Christians peacefully and still can. Go read about Andalusia in Spain and how Muslims protected Jews from the Grand Inquisitions that were taking place in Europe at that time.

Anyone who converts to Judaism according to Jewish law, is considered to be Jewish. A convert is as much a part of the Jewish community as any other Jew. It is even forbidden to mention that the person converted. They are FULL JEWS, according to Jewish law. Also, only a very small percentage of Ashkenazi trace their lineage back to the Khazars, btw. And they also are full Jews, having converted according to Jewish law. Don't believe the "facts" you hear from antisemites, ok.

The Bible explains more or less the same story as Coran since Adan and Eve to Abraham but what happened next? God saved a son of Abraham in the desert, so, he could be the father the Muslim religion, wasn't it?
By the way, what a nice music! It seems that swing and groove was not invented in the USA but in Yemen, by Jews (although I think there was a deep arabic influence too).

Instead of focusing on political and religious differences, how about we focus on the reason why we visited this page: to appreciate the beauty of the music and dance that is intrinsic to the Yemenite Jewish culture. At the end of the day if you open us up, we are identical on the inside. One heart, two lungs, etc.
Speaking of Yemenite music, can anyone kindly tell me the name of this song? I think Daklon or Moti Nahari also did a rendition of this song, and I've been trying to look for it.

    Such good music
I attended a Shabbos in Jerusalem at a yemeni Jewish family's home, they are delightful people and their music more so
I'd heard that yemenite Jews provided security to the yemeni Royal family
Is this sung in yemenite Arabic or a Jewish language besides ladino?
Too bad that no one talks about the pain that Yemen is going through at the hands of its fellow Muslims.

Actually, if you read your history books closely, Christians did not always get along with Jews. When the Christian crusaders took over Jerusalem, they only let Christians enter and worship there. However, when Salah ad-Din (who was Muslim) captured it from the Christians, he allowed any follower of an Abrahamic religion to live and worship there. In fact, Maimonides was his royal physician.

KOQluvr09 Muslims and Jews were in the past in better terms than either of them with Christians I think. Its probably bc jewdasium and Islam are both monolithic religions but Christianity has a lot of mixing up with Jesus being god/the son of god and its all very confiding.

Khalood, of course these are Yemeni, Yemeni Jews - and their accent and singing is just like Ofra Haza, the way she sang. She was a Yemenite Jew as well. You're Yemeni, but you don't know your own nation's history?

Great song, every time I hear it I feel like dancing! From the little I know of Yemeni culture, it has a very rich culture, beautiful jewelery, clothes, music, and landscape.
It's kinda strange to see Jews who actually look Arab and dancing to Arab music, since most people are only exposed to Askenazi (European Jews). Wonderful video thanks for posting.

First of all, these guys are secular not religious. They have the culture but not the obedience to God, if they did, they would not be singing in front of men, nor would they be displaying themselves in this way. Red is also a color we traditionally avoid.
You can also tell by the fact that the men aren't bearded.
Secondly, the day any of us give a damn about the opinion of some idol worshiping piece of shit regarding my Holy and God fearing brethren is going to be an amusing day indeed.

I thinbk taht there is no possibility to continue talking..we have different style of life and of opinion..it has been a pleasure in meeting you...good luck.

I did not ask you to give a contribution...I just suggested you to do it. Anyway it is easy to give money, what it is more difficult is to support people with real charity work..example one month per year in Palestine. I do the same in Israel, when I can...I still hope for Israel surviving in order do not loose again what my family lost alreday in 1943...I would like to keep my family ties and my personal affects...I am just talking about feeling...and not money or proprierties...

In my opinion that is Jewish Yemeni dancing as the men are all wearing Kippaot on their heads and Tsitsit which are not to my knowledge part of the muslim religion nor generic Arab culture which by definition is a member of a Semitic people inhabiting Arabia, whose language and Islamic religion spread widely throughout the Middle East and northern Africa from the seventh century.

is that what you stand for?? spreading the culture of hate wherever you go??whats wrong with you?? are you saying that the Palestinian people are the bad guys??regardless of your take on the conflict, describing a nation of being wrong is WRONG!!the modern world gave it a name...its called RACISM!

@arkhatych It's only that way because in 1948, 14th of May - which interestingly was celebrated a couple of days ago - Britain decided to give that land, where the Palestinians had been living for hundreds of years, give it to the Jews, and Subjugate the Jews over the Palestineans. Your Israel is only 60 years old, and before it was called the British Mandate of......Palestine!!

Why do you think they left? Because they were treated as dhimmi's and persecuted. A yemeni jew was not allowed to ride a horse and be taller than a muslim. Zionism is an idealogy born out of persecution, of jewish independence in our own homeland, whether it be from the middle east or from europe. Zionism didnt create hate for the jews, hate for the jews created zionism.

@arkhatych You think? Opposing Israel's atrocities doesn't make you a Hizballa activist, because if it did, then many people who would considered "democratic westerners" would fall under that category. But if you're saying that Norman Finkelstein is a Hizballa activist, than I don't know.

In the words of JEWISH-American political scientist Norman Finkelstein, although not word for word:
