This video was filmed more than a month ago, and I still haven't heard back from them via email. Was hoping that, at some point, they'd at least respond with a more specific parts breakdown, but I'm not even sure this business is even "in business" at this point. Will try reaching out again soon. I'll also offer any assistance/guidance if they're open to it. Would make for a cool mini-series and would provide the business with decent exposure.

Good rule. If people are being vague or using buzzwords to describe, that's usually a bad sign. To me, "450w PSU" sounds like "cheap PSU". If people use good/high quality parts in the builds they sell, they usually list the brand name and/or model, as it makes for a good selling point.

so funny story about incompatible hardware. I asked NCIX to build me a PC using their exclusive bitfenix "portal" case (it looks like a portal sentry) - I didn't want to fiddle with building it myself so I had the tech pick the parts, order them, build the PC and give me a call in 6-8 weeks or whatever. It was a no-rush PC I wanted to use to watch videos over the network
Anyway, the portal case is a mITX case and the tech managed to select the right motherboard, but ordered a full sized PSU instead of a SFX PSU. I didn't say anything.
Weeks later when the parts arrived I got an email saying there would be a delay bc the PSU didn't fit. You don't say?
(I picked NCIX because if I ordered from canada computers, they would have charged me for the PSU that didn't fit plus the new PSU that did fit. CanCom bad NCIX good. NCIX bankrupt though :( )

Once they heard that I could the same thing at a fraction of the cost they decided to build it themselves too or have a friend/family member who knows how to do it for them. Back when local Pc shops were more common people thought when we sold a $1000 PC we’d make $1000. When we’d buy parts for about the same price they could. So our price might be $100 or so. Which means if a computer came in and needed support even once we were about break even.
Still today computer shops are going to pay the same price for parts as a user can. So damn you have to imagine these companies have to make something. They have staff. Employees. Have to build and support the thing. Etc.
Stop looking at the price of parts and expect to pay that.

My neighbor sadly got scammed by a company like this, she paid $2500 for a am2 phenom and a gt 710 with 4gb ddr2, and this was 3 years ago. She wanted me to fix it, because the psu they used killed the gpu, cpu, and ram. I told her it's not worth repairing.

Businesses like this epitomize the saying "There's a sucker born every minute". Uninformed consumers would be better served buying something from Dell or HP, or going to Microcenter or Best Buy and buying a PC from one of these sources. At least they know what they are buying.

LMAO my PC I built last year cost me around the same price as the first one, and just completely destroys it. RTX 2060, 16gbs of 2400 ram, and ryzen 5 2600x. This is why I always tell people to build it themselves, and look for deals on parts. I got the 2060 for about $290 via amazon warehouse when they were still selling for around $350 new. And build for whay you plan on playing. I dont play many triple A games, so I just got ram thats not super fast, and a last gen cpu. Still runs all my games great!

I've seen stuff like this before, where the info is vague and even a deliberate order looping 'glitch' on the website. The idea then was to get the prospective customer to call the store at which point the hard sell salesperson kicks in.
Also... the entry level gaming PC had non-descript mobo and power supplies but the 'Stock Trading' one had a Gaming mobo and Gaming power supply ???

I do enjoy these videos, however I still believe it's hard to measure values when you're not able access the margins. Usually a physical retailer won't be able to compete with an Amazon or Newegg online store and almost always your ROI is greater buying everything online and building it yourself - considering you won't mess up anything.
Do you believe it's possible to access the costs of running a small local business, including supplies, and comparing how would you fare against them in a video?
