I always thought this would make a great episode. I was absolutely correct. Wonderful job in every way guys! I'm so proud of you! Honestly its better then the older drafts. Never cease to impress.
I think that it is very important to mention that the north Vietnamese invasion of south Vietnam was not just an attempt to spread communism. South Vietnam was a military dictatorship with nearly no support from the Vietnamese population. Vietnamese people in the north and south rightly viewed the existence of south vietnam as a compromise with the French, and a barrier to complete independence.
This is a gross oversimplification. 🤦 The North Vietnamese were NOT the good guys. But neither was the South Vietnamese government. Both sides were absolutely awful, with despotic leaders and murderous policies. Communist Vietnam was an absolutely AWFUL PLACE to be in the ≈60's-80's.
@@dankineer4855 Wrong. It was because of Ho Chi Minh's absolutely INSANE economic policies. Compare South Korea and Vietnam over the same time period (both recovering from a long, absolutely BRUTAL war on home soil) and then kindly STFU about things you obviously don't understand. 🤷

Just a comment from a Vietnamese native. I very much enjoy your content. Extremely oversimplification of Vietnam before the French colonists came; we were under Chinese control (again) for over 1100+ years (longest streak) and just regained our independent in the late 1800s. Even before that we were always threaten by China's invasion throughout our country's history since before the Bronze age. The founders of the first Viet, the 18 Hùng Kings (18 đời Hùng Vương of Lạc Việt), and the first rebellion against Chinese ruling of the Trưng sisters (Hai Bà Trưng; Trưng Trắc, and Trưng Nhị of Đại Nam) are engrained in our cultures and traditions to not yield to foreign powers. So when we got occupied by the cruelties of the Colonial France, Hồ Chí Minh, at 21 using the name Văn Ba, went on a French ship the Amiral de Latouche-Tréville as a cook to travel the world to find a way to regain our independence.
Another operation was called "Operation Wandering Souls". The plan was to play recordings of people screaming so that the Vietcong would think it was the souls of the dead soldiers.
You said about the North Vietnamese that even though they had more casualties, their morale and strength in numbers worked in their favor. You'd think that people watching their country being destroyed might lose morale but the opposite was true- it drove them to want to get rid of more of the Americans that they saw as a pest eating their nation alive. Then there was the fact that many of the Americans were young, some not even old enough to buy alcohol here today, watching their friends and brithers be killed, thousands of miles away from home- some away for the first time ever- and away from everyone they knew and loved. I'm 45- my uncle was in Vietnam when he was younger than my own son is today. He ended up with a horrible injury a bit later which got infected deep in his leg and was shipped out. I saw his time there and his injury affect him for the rest of his life. Not to mention the way many of the returning troops were treated upon returning home- especially by their own peers. People they'd been in English or gym with or that grew up down the street.

"If it had been my choice to make I would have stayed out from the begining... but once committed, once having made a major sacrifice, my inclination would have been to go ahead and finish the thing quicker." "Atomic weapons?" "If necessary." This is the ONLY patriotic position to hold. The United States has never recovered from Vietnam.
My Dad fought in Vietnam. His PTSD echoes in skittish, violent behaviors in his family. Some legacy.
My dad did, too. I'm sorry.
Glad Johnson was only drunk 95% of the time so he was able to think rationally on this occasion.
If you’re drunk 95% of the time you’re probably worse off the other 5% of the time. The drunk becomes your normal functioning.
and talking about HIS johnson during 50% of that 💀 (true story)
Wow, I was not aware that it was this close to an atomic war. Horrific scenario to think about. Thank you for covering such themes.
More than once too lol
The US was losing, they considered many many unethical things to change that.
There were way more near misses than you'd believe.
The six day war almost went nuclear the year prior the 60’s were intense
