  • Due to the events of 2020, everyone almost forgot about the revival of Colt’s single most important revolver, the Python.
    The new Python initially had mechanical issues that were shared online by early adopters, which didn't help Colt's marketing efforts, especially with the pandemic. But we have been neglecting this revolver for too long so in this video, we’ll talk about it.

      15 million are foreign agents, the remainder are real Americans who work for a living, raise their kids and pay taxes. They aren’t typically welcome on TH-cam.

    I'm a S&W revolver collector, but last year I decided to focus on Colt so I bought the 6”, 4 1/4” and a 3” Pythons. Love them all (oh, plus an 8” Anaconda, a 4” King Cobra and a blued Gold Cup) Great guns. I am awaiting the 4” Anaconda and hope to have it soon. The VAST majority of owners of the new Colts seem to be delighted. There will always be those who are not pleased. If so I say sell it and get what you prefer.

      You are a Lucky man! I’ve owned the S&W 686 revolver in 4” & 6” barrels both in SS and both are beautifully crafted /very reliable revolvers. I’ve held the Colt 6” python (my dream revolver), & the king cobra, both in 357 magnum and the anaconda in 44 magnum many times growing up at my local gun stores. Back then in the 80’s I only wish I was old enough to purchase one at it’s price at that time. I’ve also had a passion for John Moses Browning’s Hi-Power 9mm and his 1911 semi-auto “masterpiece” in 45 acp as well. So when Kimber came out with it’s “Raptor” Line of 1911; I instantly felt the “NEED” for one so I found myself one at my local gun store. So after looking for awhile I finally purchased my SS Kimber Pro Raptor ll in 45 acp and got it new with a hefty price tag at over $1500 dollars (my personal Limit) and this is a rule I try to live by personally. I know you get what you pay for and now these Colt revolvers have passed that price tag long ago as many 1911’s of quality have as well these days!#Colt#Python#6”barrel#🔫#🐍Envy/Lust#BucketListPistol#BrowningHi-Power#9mm#1911❤#45acp❤#Kimber#Raptor@Walter Richmond

    My early 1990s 4 inch blue Python is a point of pride to be certain. I own several handguns, a couple of 1911s in 45 ACP, a couple of revolvers in 357/38, a single action Ruger in 45 Colt and a Ruger Mk 22/45 pistol. I kept the Python "unturned" with a protective spacer in the cylinder for quite a while until I broke down and fired it. It's had a few hundred rounds through it and that's it. The blue finish as well as the action are as close to jewel like as you can imagine. I have the box and original grips (I put on a Hogue mono grip). My regular range shooters are the 1911s and the 22 for plinking. The new Python in 6 inch polished stainless would be nice to own.

    I recently bought a new model Python. I've wanted Python all of my long life. Got it and had to send it back to the factory. I've scrubbed the identifying info, but you can read my RMA letter to Cold and get the gist.
    Folks -
    On 04/19/2023 I took possession of my new model Python. Upon unpackaging, several issues came to light.
    1: The barrel is misaligned to the frame. Looking down the sight window, the front sight is canted to the right. Looking down the muzzle, it’s even more obviously canted to the left. When the barrel was torqued to the frame, it needed to be screwed on the tiniest bit more. Colt QC clearly missed this, but I know you can quickly correct it. Thanks.
    2: Python triggers are legendary. My double action trigger is a thing of glory; my single action most definitely is not. I understand positive sear angle, but the single action trigger on this gun draws the hammer almost 1/64” to the rear before a heavy release. Some research suggests that this is done deliberately at the factory to satisfy some absurd California and Massachusetts dropped gun requirements. I live in a southern state. We like our guns and we don’t drop them. The Colt customer service rep I spoke with said you are not allowed to tune the single action. C’mon guys - I suspect you all have Pythons of your own and that your single action triggers are tuned to perfection. I want that too. I promise to look the other way while a technician mounts the trigger and hammer onto their jig and takes a few passes with a file to make the trigger pull what it can and should be. As Sargent Shultz from “Hogans Hero’s” famously said, “I know nothing!” I want to show this revolver off to my shooting buddies. Right now, I feel I need to apologize for it. This isn’t what either of us wants.
    3: There is ~ 0.002 end shake in the cylinder. I’m guessing this is withing spec, but any end shake at all in a premier revolver like this is too much. I plan to shoot this a lot, and the battering the ratchet pad will take will shorten the gun’s life. Please fix this.
    I’ve wanted a Python since I started shooting (decades ago). Now I have one. I ask you to please make this the revolver I thought I was buying. I know you can do this.
    Thanks and regards,

      That was an excellent letter and I couldn't have said it better. I have original Pythons and not wanting to shoot them to death, I sprang for a new 2020 model Python. It was purchased late, in Jan. of 2013 because I wanted one with all the bugs worked out. Low and behold the gun had to be returned back to Colt with a 6 week wait. My initial enthusiasm took a big hit. The gun would not fire reliability in double action. Colt repaired it saying that the hammer strut was defective and needed replacement. It now seems to work well except whenever CCI primers are involved. It still misfires every one out of ten times with them. Whenever asked about parts availability, Colt goes mum. Eventually a screw or a spring may need replacement. Since the factory warranty is only for ONE YEAR, does that mean the gun must be returned even for those minor problems? At what cost? Shipping isn't cheap nor is service work. Colt has to address this. That sucks.

    I picked up a new anaconda last weekend. Beautiful gun and I love the way it feels. Sadly I couldn't get it sighted in. Even with the rear sight all the way to the right, it shot left. Looking closely, I saw the barrel wasn't turned in enough to properly align with the frame.its something I can fix myself, but I shouldn't have to when the gun costs this much.

      @@teller1290 Good morning teller. When a revolver cylinder is turned there is a small spring loaded pawl that locks the cylinder in place when it is in alignment with the barrel. This small projection drags on the cylinder as it turns and leaves a slight drag mark.

    The Python is still made by Colt's Manufacturing Company as it's always been. CZ is the holding company of Colt's Manufacturing Company. Nothing more, nothing less. Many companies that were once independent are now part of large conglomerates. That doesn't necessarily change the brand or it's iconic trademark.
    Those bent on dumping on Colt and its reissued legacy revolvers, 1. don't own one, 2. probably can't afford one, 3. are spouting sarcastic opinions that mean little or nothing to anyone but them. There's your (CZ) Python!

    I bought one last year in the 4.25" .I also have a 4" royal blue Python from 1978 that is a safe queen. So I wanted the new one for shooting. It shoots nice. It has its flaws, however. The grips are made of laminate wood and are too narrow for me.. The rear sight is pretty junky..It requires tightening a set screw to hold its adjustment. I have installed a pair of beautiful Nill Griffe grips. And I put a Wilson Combat rear sight on it. The double action is very smooth. But the single action is not as nice as the older gun. I am very happy with it now, after my upgrades !

  • @prebaned
    @prebaned ปีที่แล้ว +2

    They did good on the new Python. It's better in almost every way. The rear sight is just a afterthought and the pull is a little heavy but smooth. Still suprising the original Pythons tall of tapper boar gets regurgitated over and over. They weren't tapered, Colt used a "silver ball" pushed through the bore which may of induced a taper by consequence. But no where will anyone find any Colt documentation of this tale of a tapered bore.

  • @jerrymoran8323
    @jerrymoran8323 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Actually, you reported most of the history correct. However the timing issues were exasperated by DIY and trigger stops not allowing the proper carry up of hand to cylinder rotation relationship. In the 2020 Python, the bolt ( locking lug) is far less engaged in the frame than the older model. More like a dog wagging its tail, with bolt not being fully supported in the frame at lockup and firing. Having redesigned the old Python lock up as well as trigger / hammer SA and DA through improved sear shape and engagement as well as tighter bolt / cylinder lockup exposed to thousands of proof type loads over 50 years , Experience and scientific cycle testing has demonstrated proven mechanical design improvements to increase reliability. The origin of the Python was actually influenced by the Colt Officers Match custom built by King Gun Works In California in the mid 1930’s complete with ventilated rib, flat back target sight, with under lug ( discontinued due to weight) and checkered oversize grips. This was verified by samples in existence, Al Gunther and Al DeJohn to me in the 70’s after I had began Custom work on existing Colt DA revolvers. Appreciate your recognition of the CZ corporation for innovation and design. I suggest the company improve the snake design in the bolt to cylinder contact. The rear sight elevation screw size to #6 and improve windage. An 8” or 10” design with pre drilled for scope mount.
    Lastly Dan WESSON improved the .357 1.3 case length to the .360 DW with 1.4 case length. with capabilities of over 1500 FPS for 180 gr bullets. Hornady or Federal could make ammo . Your inspiration has been refreshing.

Prudent handloading gives me 1 moa 6 shot groups at 25 yds off a bench . The rig was redone by a diamond cutter friend. Symmetry and geometry. Single action pull is 21oz. Double action is 43 Oz. It stays in my safe . It reminds me of my hammer. I only use it when I need it. Nice video by the way. I don't need another one. Luck to you.

    I remember the Python from Black Ops 1 during the Siege of Khe Sah. Mason, Woods, and their Marines push up a Hamburger Hill fighting NVA and as they reach the top they're hit by mortars. This stuns Mason and Woods is overpowered by an enemy soldier. Just as he's about to be killed, Mason whips the thing out from nowhere and gasses the Commies saving them all from the brink. The moment is forever etched in my mind.

Did I say "ALL" of them? H&K, GLOCK, SIG Sauer, FN....ALL of them. Some have even been recalled out of combat areas for "upgrades" by company armorers.

    I’m in favor of the 2020 Pythons in stainless as they’re much more durable and range worthy. Whenever I consider a firearm purchase, it’s for shooting… not for keeping in the safe, away from sunlight! LOL!
    I’ve owned a bunch of guns over the decades, including a few I wish I’d had hung onto. But I can say that I shot every single one of those guns, including older Pythons and SAA’s, before I let them go and haven’t regretted a single shot fired.
    I consider all guns to be tools, nothing more, nothing less. As such, I don’t see the issue in using them. I own hammers, screwdrivers, and wrenches which are all used when needed. And having said that, the new Colt Snake guns are an improved version because they’re stainless and more robust!
    Pre2005 or 2020?
    2020 stainless all day long and pass the ammo!

However the times it did fire, it was crazy accurate. I sent the gun back to Colt and they fixed all the issues but the wobbling rear sight. I did end up selling the gun however I'm going to get a 2023 Python and Anaconda. 6" and 4" barrels. Only this time I'll just leave them in their boxes.

    Im confused. If this revolver's greatness and uniqueness depended on an unusually talented workers, and those workers have been gone for 15+ yrs, how can they just show up in '20 saying "hey, come buy the Python; it's better than ever."
    It sounds like theres nothing unique about the revolver anymore that cant be duplicated by other makers if they chose to go that route. I hope im wrong. Please tell me why I am.

    The most underrated 357 is the Ruger Security Six. I own them all, and I bought the Security Six when my new wife (1978) picked it out from among ALL the pistols she tested. I have found it the most consistent, most accurate pistol we own. In the mid 1980's I went hog hunting with two friends in Fargo Georgia on private land. Around midnight we were crossing a bridge when we saw a 3-4 foot water moccasin perched and about to strike at a frog. I got on the rear bumper with one foot, held the spotlight with one hand, steadying myself with the same arm, and aimed with the Ruger in my right hand, the snake being about 35 feet away and 10 feet lower than me. One shot. Its head was gone, and the frog lived to croak another night. Later the same day I shot at a buzzard flying overhead, about 250 feet away. I hit his tail feathers and he dropped a few feet, but continued to fly off. I really like that Ruger! I also have the Redhawk 44's, AND SEVERAL OTHER RUGERS TOO. I like the Ruger Redhawk 44 because it's much beefier than the S&W 44 models. I don't own any CZ's... yet.
