I have to thank you for this video, we've had a Belgian for about 7 months now and he's never been fond of physical affection or grooming and it can be a real struggle to find where he does and doesn't want to be touched depending on his mood and the day. I tried several of these techniques out on him untied in the stall for about 15 minutes this morning and he was leaning hard into the touch, backing up into my hands, and very clearly enjoying it. He's had a fairly severe injury to a back knee at some point that's heavily scarred and bothers him, so I tried some light and medium downward pressure around the joint and I think he enjoyed that too. When I finished his mood was much different and more affectionate, you've made a real difference for us. If you have any tips or other videos on useful ways to massage lower legs and joints I'd love to use those too.
I love the way your horse is so trusting of you standing in his blind spots and running your hand over parts of his body that are vulnerable to predators. His signs of pleasure are adorable.
This is so sweet and wholesome!! And thanks to your channel, I signed up to volunteer at my local equestrian center! I swung by to visit because I was desperate to pet some horses, and they told me they were looking for volunteers! I can’t wait to get to work with the horses! They’re such amazing critters!
I enjoy giving my mare a massage, as does she, she curls her head under her neck, looks back and asks for lighter / more pressure.. usually under the "armpits" 🤣
I have no horse nor will I ever have one but I love horses with a love that grips my heart. Their beauty fills me with awe. So it is with real delight that I watched you giving your beautiful horse warmth and loving relief. You are a gem and I send you both my love. ♥
Horses do love the scratching/massaging on their withers. It's where they groom each other when they're bonding with each other. So not only does it release that tension, it helps your horse to bond with you as a herd mate.
Thank you soooo much for this video!!! Honestly what an amazing response I got ! He lay down whilst I paused to text. He hasn’t ever gone to lay down whilst I’m with him before. I think this has really helped our bond !! ❤
Tucker is B E A U T I F U L! I giggled when he started twitching his lips when you were scratching his withers. So funny!! He was LOVING it! I bet Tucker prances prettier than any other horse in the barn with all the massages he gets!
Horse massage is totally the way to go. Since having a massage therapist come work on my guy twice a month I have noticed amazing results. His movement and flow is so smooth. His trot has smoothed out, plus he loves it!
Thank you this was awesome! Trying to slowly gain my rescue Appaloosas trust. He was not to sure at first but found out it was a relax day for him. I worked on just his face, neck, and chest. Loving your videos
I always set aside time, aiming for two to several times a week (especially using crappy weather as an excuse) to spend time doing what my horse and I call, “the feel-goods”, which is skin care, massage, stretches and any “haireas” that needing trimming… it really is bonding and she totally gets into it.
Wow, this was interesting! Gonna try that with my Icelandic...He loves to get his ears and neck scratched, I'm excited to see what he'll say to this... Update: I tried this on my horse and he clearly did seem to like it. Especially considering that Icelandics aren't all that exuberant in showing their emotions. But he seemed to appreciate it and ended up being VERY relaxed.
Awesome vid! I’m working for lessons at a stables near by, and my favorite boy Newt is also the owner’s tensest and mouthiest horse. He’s very sensitive and likely in pain from all this tension, and tends to get overstimulated very quickly during grooming. Last time after riding and end grooming, I took a moment and long massaged the muscles running down the sides of his spine, and it’s one of the most relaxed and happy moments I’ve ever seen with this boy (who is normally ‘muzzled’ loosely during grooming to keep those teeth at bay!). He even seemed a bit receptive to touch on his neck and possibly-problem shoulder, as well as a tense ridge down his ribs, when normally he’s more skittish to brushing. Seeing such a monumental change in Newt, and knowing I’m one of the only people who loves (& doesn’t fear) him enough to work with him like this, it means I’ve been researching more massages and more ways to help him release all that tension he’s got stored inside. I think from now on, I’m going to bring him to groom early, and spend the first several minutes warming him up with massages like the ones here- especially the lymph node one if he’ll let me, considering that tense neck and mild head shyness. Maybe his temples too. And then once all is said and done, end his second grooming with a massage too, so his first and last impressions of the experience are good. Hopefully he calms down more over time. I’m looking forward to seeing him calm down and grow into himself a bit more. Thanks again for the tips!
I’m an Ayurvedic bodyworker, recently I massaged a horse at my Natural Hotsemanshop training. I ❤️it! Also, discovered horses have the same marma ( energy) points as humans. I feel inspired to take equine massage certification course and do this ( at least partly) for living . Thank u for a lovely video ❤️🐴🙏
Thank you so much for this video. Was looking for a simple and straightforward series of basic massages I could try. Excellent instruction and so very helpful. I can't wait to incorporate these into my riding and grooming sessions. On the exercise where you are going up and down the side of the neck in that groove from the ear to the chest, when I've done that on my horse, he puts his head up almost like I'm hitting nerve and his head pops up - doesn't appear in pain as it looks like he likes it. Just wondering if that is a nerve in there that may cause that reaction? Thanks again for the awesome video (and you sound just fine and clear on your video)!
Today, I went out to the barn and chatted with someone who had a Arab/saddle bred(i have an Arab)then we started doing some massages on my horse,Kowboy. He loved when we went to his butt and scratched it, he loved it so much his tail flipped up onto his back then the side of his back. He also smiled for the first time for 3 times after a couple things!!!
Gosh my heart melted when she was talking about how horses might put their ears back and look at you and then he did that very thing like he know’s he’s helping her with a demonstration hahahaa he’s so dang cute!!
Really useful. Iv recently got a new pony who I'm bonding with. Unfortunately she had stomach ulcers and was uncomfortable to touch. Now clear I'm sure she will enjoy a massage.
Love this video! Getting ready to get my first horse in many years and watching your videos has given me more confidence. This easy massaging seems to be a great way to make my future horse feel good as well as a great way for me to bond with him/her. Keep the videos coming!! Thanks so much!! :)
thank you for this, I have an older appy mare who's struggling in her hind end, (I can't lift her legs for trimming), so before I think about getting a hole dug, I'm keen to try some massages, and hip releases. Very grateful for any help I find on youtube. Thank you for your great information.
I massaged my horse also sometimes. I like getting massages, so I figured the horse would too. usually did it on the neck and shoulders, also on the back.
Hi! Please tell me how/where you became certified. My daughter is interested as a career choice and I want to read up on a legit establishment. Really enjoyed this vid!
I have seen your videos before, and I really appreciate this one. I have been looking for something like this for a while. Thank you so much for doing this video
Thank you for this video. I have adopted two minis who were abused and they are still unsure of touch. I am excited to introduce this to them a little at a time as they relearn their trust.
I've been teaching my horse to give to poll pressure to lower his head. He also has an old injury at the poll from a previous owner, they tied him tight with a rope halter then let him really pull back hard enough to injure 😡, so when he got a massage the other day he kept dropping his head when she tried to work on it. So I have to change his head down cue now oops 😂
I was accidentally doing the lymph nodes massage on my horse and was a bit confused on way she was yawning so much and why she was sniffing the ground a lot 🥰
Awesome as ALWAYS!! I love how practical you explain things, thank you. At work I have to do a stifle and gaskin massage, would what you show here suffice? I'm being told to use more pressure in the gaskin??
I love watching your videos! very helpful. Would you recommend doing the massage first or the stretches? and always before and after a workout? Like humans? Thank you, keep up the great content!
Thanks. This was so informative. I realised that I am actually massaging my horses and I thought it was just play-play contact. Strange though, that my horses don't mind me doing all these rubs, except the hocks. They are really "anti"
Love this!! I always wanted to lightly massage my 2 geldings but didnt know how and didnt want to hurt them. Cant wait to try these on my 2!!! Thanks for making this video!
We may not have horses but some of our cows even likes them certain types of massages..lol but other than that good video ma'am thanks for sharing! P,s your horse looks cute with its markings😍.
My horse's chiropractor starts right out taking his (closed) pen and drawing along the topline wanting to see a response and then the midline to see if he is loose enough to raise up and how high. So what should I think about dropping the back in response? Good or bad? This is a good alternative to the Masterson method before a ride as my guy can find it too intense with hardly a touch, but is ok with this type of approach.

Hello Catherine how are you doing today
It was VERY hot today in NC so, I did a little massage primarily around his neck and withers. He yawned and yawned, loving it. Thank you.
Hello Lee how are you doing today
I watched this to relax myself, and also to watch cuteness overload called Tucker.
I LOVE the idea of using grooming as a warm up. My aging dressage horse thanks you.

Thank you! I will try these on my horse. He loves being pampered and these would be beneficial before a ride!
Hello Rita how are you doing today
I love how she is always gaging the horses reaction while she is massaging him.
Omg! This video is so helpful and amazing for bonding with your horse! Thanks for showing that. Another thing learned

I should get a horse...
else how will I be able to justify enjoying these videos so much 😂

your video nailed it. our 4 year old starting to show some stifness and your vid helped us to loosen him up. thank you so much
Thought your video was very informative for the horse order or just someone who rides others horse. Great knowledge given. Three cheers to you. ❤❤❤
Tucker is taking notes!

I don't really want to learn anything. I just want to see a horse enjoying itself. They work so hard for us.

How'd it go? 😍
Thank you very much for your useful advices ! I know a tensed English TB mare who'll be happy to try it on her body. 😊👍🏻🐴💖
I loved watching this video!
Will for sure try this out myself! ❤
This is one of several of your videos I have seen. Subscribed. That pony looks very well fed and spoiled rotten and I am so jealous of your barn. Lol

Tucker is so cute❤ Great videos. You are a natural!
I love this channel so much
Your horse is adorable 🥰
I absolutely 🫶 your content. It is so valuable and empowering and helps me to feel capable.
Tucker is so fun to watch. what a great partner.
Hi! Please tell me how/where you became certified. My daughter is interested as a career choice and I want to read up on a legit establishment. Really enjoyed this vid!
My Phoenix LOVES her massages and stretches after she gets done with our ride. Especially her poll massages. She falls asleep on my shoulder.
Wish you were near my horse. Very good explanation.
Tucker is a beautiful horse!!
I got my first horse 4 months ago. I’ve been massaging him all along without even realizing it because I can’t keep my hands off of him!! 😂😊❤️
I have been using these on my horses for years now, almost everyday and they never fail to make my horse chew and yawn.
You would love the posture prep rubber curry. It is wonderful for cross fiber massage on horses. Designed by a chiropractor.
His nose was wiggling during those scratches ❤
Thank you for educating me. Love ❤️

Will these message techniques help arthritis?
Another Great idea!
Have you tried cryotherapy with the horse?
You don’t NEED formal training to massage your horse, but it does help.
Question. How long does one massage each area?
You are quite talented.
