I installed one of these on my HRX217 when it was new in 2017. It now has 89.9 hours on it. I love it! Makes timing of maintenance a breeze! Thanks for confirming that I’m not crazy!
Haha you’re not crazy... just SMART! Very helpful little device! Thanks for watching David!
There are not many people out there that can make such a no fuss very informative video as this guy, awesome job dude!!!!!
Thanks a lot Hobbs! Appreciate the positive feedback! Thanks for watching!
As a member of the Tribe installed the hour meter. Having watched this TH-cam video, winding 6 times around the spark plug wire, two zip ties duck tape a gathering at the last tab more duck tape. With a scratch awl I marked location for the screws and drilled 1/16 holes. But I stopped took the wire and imbedded it in the slot of the meter, then I tightened the screws to the deck. That saved me from reverse punching with a stubby.
Thanks for you videos

Just installed the NKTECH on my new Honda HRN and did the 30 minute oil change. Thank you for making these videos! Its my first brand new mower. Ive had hand me downs for the last 40 years of my life and I want to make sure I treat this one right. Already got extra oil, spark plugs, filters and sharpening kit, all ready for future maintenance.
Awesome Supreme Infantry! Sounds like you’re going to be set for a very long time! Thanks for being a cool fan of the channel!
I was just watching your video on the oil change on your honda216. And after watching it i thought "hey let me see how to add an hour meter." And your video popped up again. Your awesome man i really appriciate you
That’s awesome dj! Cool that video popped up. Thanks for watching
Super helpful video. Just installed the exact same product under different brand name from Amazon onto my new HRN216.
I placed it a little bit more to the right so as not to drive the screw into the base of the tab.
Just mowed my little front yard and confirmed that I'm now at .1 hours. This will make performing maintenance at the right intervals a cinch. Thanks so much!
ROCK ON my friend! Great for tracking your maintenance!
Bought this and installed it on my Honda HRX217 mower yesterday. Even thought it's a different engine, the install instructions were exact and it works perfect. Thanks for the info.
Awesome my friend! Thanks for watching
I just got my HRX Honda and did a quick search on it and it led me here, was a little apprehensive about doing this to a brand spanking new mower ...but...no guts..no glory. Works like a charm. Stoked. Thanks for the vid.
Hey Tony! Not a hard task at all! Glad you got that hour meter on no problem! Thanks for watching!
I just installed an hour meter on my used John Deere JS46 push mower (which is an oddball itself, with electric start and pressurized oiling system with a tiny, spin-on filter--but I digress). Of course, I have no idea how many hours were accumulated by the previous two owners, but the meter will make keeping track of maintenance easy. The particular hour meter I selected also has a "job timer" function, which will be nice for keeping track of how long it takes to cut the 5 different areas I mow (I have a rough idea, of course, but I like to track that sort of thing). The meter also includes a tachometer function, which will be useful for checking the idle speed (since one of the previous owners messed with the governor spring bracket) but is probably not an essential feature.
Always good to have all the information! Thanks for sharing World Power Labs!
The extra length wire is provided to remotely mount the indicator away from the heat, vibration and water when you wash off all the dirt, grit and grass off your engine and deck. I have an HRX217, electric start, adjustable throttle and speed control lever on the handle bar. When the engine is off it displays hours, when the engine is running it shows the RPM of the engine which is adjustable. I tell the person to set the rpm at what I determine. Too many operators run the mower almost at Idle speed if you let them.

Thanks for the great video, I'm gonna pick this mower up this weekend, I'm currently recovering from a spinal surgery and think this mower is gonna be a whole lot better than pushing the old heavy Cub Cadet.

@@GarageGear it's freaking AWESOME!!! no back pain walking behind this one👍
@@GarageGear although I have a slight leak at the bottom of the filler neck. Grrrrrrr
@@williamwiese9963 walking behind these mowers is most definitely easy! 👍
@@williamwiese9963 really on a brand new one? When you change the oil take off the filler neck. I wonder if the thin rubber washer is out of place. These can be easily replaced if necessary!
I could not release the front clip after yanking on it. Instead pulled the spark plug wire off the plug. With better access, easily wound the meter wire around the spare plug wire. Secured it with a zip tie and wrapped the coil in guerilla tape. Next fed the meter wire under the cover after first laying it on G tape and secured it. Then mounted meter with double stick tape, fed in the wire, and done after securing the loosened screws.
Thanks for sharing buster!
I'm definitely going to be adding one of these to every new machine I get! Makes me really wonder how many hours my old used GCV160 honda mowers have! I have 2 one I paid $40 for and the other I just paid $20 for. I bought both used actually all of my equipment is used besides my stihl trimmer I bought new. It would be interesting to see how many hours everything has!
Hey Iowafox! You could put them on your machines now and at the end the season you’ll have a rough number of hours logged. You could then average that out over the number of years you had your previous machines to see how many hours you actually had. Have fun installing them! Thanks for watching! 👍
Just installed that hour meter on Ariens Platinum 30. Works great. Wanted it installed before i started using a new machine. Hard to believe a $2300 snow blower dorsnt come with one from the factory.
For a price tag like that it should have one lol! That blower is gonna be a beast! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for that great demonstration on nkteck hour meter installation. The package lacked in details, but you explained it well.
You got it my friend
Good idea, and I'm glad you did this, since I have a new mower that needs it.
That said, I want to introduce you to a better duct tape. Gaff tape. Protapes gaff tape, specifically. I'm not sponsored or anything, but I use it in the film industry, and that stuff is great. It leaves no residue, but is almost as tacky as the gorilla tape (I've never had it not hold what I want it to hold, but it also doesn't stick immediately and not let itself be pulled off or leave anything behind to remind you you were there.
Thanks for sharing this Royer!
@GarageGear welcome! You can leave it on thr surface for weeks or .months and it lever leaves anything behind.
Another point of view here. I check the oil often, when it is not honey colored, that is, if it is dirty, I change it. And---I change it even if there "are not enough hours" to warrant a change. Turn it around, if the hours say it is time--but it is not dirty, I don't change it. A military mechanic taught me that, part of KISS, keep it simple stupid thinking. Dirty? Change it. clean, leave it alone. But, to each his own.
Like your plan! 👍
Great review - I still use my 1988 Toro push mower with synthetic 10W30 - I'll add an hour meter!
Thanks Mike! Those old toros rock! Thanks for watching!
Hey I know it’s a bit unrelated but I know you say to do a oil change after 30 minutes, I did that and was wondering when I should do it next and then how often after that?
Hey Josh a good plan of attack here is to now do it again after 5 hours and then at the end of the season! She’ll be good to go after that once a season!
Good video. Dumb question, how is the meter powered? I get it would see the induction from the plug wire like a timing light, but how does it save the hours? Battery powered?
It is battery powered. They last a stupid long time though! Mine have all been going for over the last five years! 👍
@@GarageGear thanks. Mine arrived yesterday added to my new rider this afternoon, let it run until I saw a .1 to be sure I got it. Now I will be able to track my hours for oil, grease, blades, etc without using the guesswork! Again, great video. Thanks for posting.
@@mikeivan5947 ROCK ON MIKE! You’re good to go!
On my way to grab extra oil for the initial 25 minute break in of the Honda engine I picked up last night. After the 5 hour oil change you mentioned we can use synthetic right ?
Yep that will work fun! 👍
What happens to the hours counted display when you change the battery? Does it reset to zero or keep the accumulated hours intact and keep counting forward?
Not exactly sure! Never had a battery go out!
I'm really confused. You don't show connecting the wire to the wire meter other than pressing it into the slot. Is there some kind of metal connection in the slot that connects to the wire?
Is it picking up electrical field from the spark plug wire simply by being wrapped in close proximity to it?
Exactly my friend! It picks up the electrical current and starts the clock! Pretty straightforward. 👍
Hello MR Garage Gear.. love your content always watch and subscribed!
Quick question I do own this domestic HRN lawn mower and have the issues with the current recall resolved got the part from honda. Just another issue well assuming a issue I did take my mower to have it looked its been leaking near the carbi and on the deck. Was inpected and advised doesn't leak I did check and no leak yet but because of the mower being domestic have to turn off gas when not in use otherwise carbi fills up due to overflow I think they said. Is that Normal for this mower to happen?
Hey retro that is not a normal thing. I would go to another shop for another opinion on the leak.
@GarageGear thanks for your reply. Also I noticed oil comming out near the carbi. I am assuming it's bad oil ring?
@@RETROGAMM3R hard to tell without looking at it myself. I would have to looked at somewhere.

Is it possible to get a Garage Gear pizza? I know it's wrong season, some of the new Toro snowblowers have no "shear pins", what's your thoughts?
I’ll see what I can do! I’m not a fan of that design! I want a “safety net” before my gearbox breaks! Toro cut a big corner there to cut costs. Speaking of snowblowers I’ll probably be working on some snowblower content in the coming months! 👍
👍👍 Question: is that slot on the meter the "pickup" location?
Yes you’ll need to connect the wire in the slot for the meter to start totaling hours

JB, I just received in the mail the same hour meter you recommended in this video. It looks like the unit came already on, have you had any issues changing out the battery on this thing?
Those batteries last darn near forever! I’m pretty sure you can open them up to put a new battery inside. Not sure if it will lose your hours counted tho!
You can coil the second zip tie around the wire before pulling tight.

Il dubbio è se installare il tutto nella sequenza:
a) rubinetto poi filtro e dopo carburatore
oppure
b) filtro, rubinetto e dopo carburatore
con la sequenza a) in caso di rubinetto chiuso il filtro rimane pieno di carburante, con la sequenza b) rimane secco
cosa consigliate?

@@unoptanio great question Michele! Here’s what I’ve done for a long time and it has never failed me. Rather than an hour meter. Some mowers have an external oil filter kit available. Uses a spin on filter just like your car. Does the unit run off of battery? If so how long does it last? What is the purpose of the wire on the spark plug?
Hey Cody! The clock unit runs on a battery I have a few hour meters over four years old and are still running! The wire on the spark plug picks up the current that the machine is running and transmits the signal to the clock telling it to start counting the time the machine machine is running. Many have a feature that allows you to change the initial hour meter which means if the battery goes dead you can replace the battery without losing your runtime numbers. Of course you need to know what they were roughly before the battery died.
