My favorite medium is music. With a book, you can describe emotions, but everybody is going to feel it differently, and I'll mostly imagine it, but won't feel it. With music, I can really feel the writer/singer/musician's emotion, and it really makes me feel something deep inside me. I don't know if I am being clear with thoses explanations🙈
Okay, so I've loved Eluveitie, Cellar Darling and Anna's own solo stuff for as long as I can remember. I've also loved you for years. This makes me very very happy.
I'm so much happy to have discovered Eluveitie some years ago, back when one or two of their track were made free for download and personal use on Lastfm. I tend to think it happened in 2008 or 2009. But I wish I was able to recall which track it was, it sounded somewhat similar to that of Havoc, yet it was even more folk-ish. In my memory, it keeps convincing me it was «Your Gaulish War» - yet I can't say for sure. When I found out the band members of Eluveitie decided they won't continue it together, I initially experienced anxiety and grief. But very soon it turned out that this event brought us two amazing bands. Thank you for being you.
At university, I had this wonderfully transcendent experience with music and art. For an illustration assignment, I visually interpreted a rare 60's song about a psychedelic spider. Eventually I got in touch with the songwriter, and what I drew had been what he saw 40 years earlier.
Every day, you will face challenges that attempt to knock you off course. This is why positivity must be a lifestyle. Embrace better ways of living, whether that includes changing your diet, building better relationships, exercising, etc - just to keep you on course.
I have probably listened to the album like 30 times so far with the bonus disk of Anna narrating the story. I love it. Been a fan of Anna and Merlin for while now starting when they were in Eluveitie.
My favorite story telling medium is calligraphy. It is SUCH a creative outlet and choosing just the right word and how to illustrate it can speak volumes. It has taught me discipline and patience.
Oral stories. Sitting around a campfire, telling stories and eating s’mores. Best. Probably because that’s what’s my family did every summer. We’d go camping and every night we’d talk/ tell stories around a campfire. It was great craic. 💚
I love theatre and music a lot, but my favourite storytelling medium would have to be books because there is nothing that equals the feeling of being fully immersed in a good story, the best ones are where you're not even conscious of reading the words you just see the story happening in your head. I also find writing does the same thing as well but with my own stories sometimes evolving faster than I can write the words down. Absolutely loved this chat, I am loving all the writing/creativity themed content!! 💚💚💚💚💚
Me and my cousin that I lost contact with used to have reading competitions. Never heard of anyone else ever doing that! Brings back some happy memories.
This is awesome! I've been fortunate enough to meet Anna (briefly) on a couple of occasions after gigs and she's genuinely lovely, approachable and so patient with all the fans (as are Ivo and Merlin, too). I wish you both much success for the future.
Aww I love this and seeing you two together! I saw Eluveitie live a few times when Anna was in the band, and I'm seeing Cellar Darling live in a couple months! Can't wait. 🖤
What you said about trauma feeding creativity really spoke to me, I'm writing a second novel right now and the idea for it came to me after my father died. My cousin told me something about a family spell that made all of the men die young and I just went from there and built a story.
Aww it's so sweet to see the two of you. I've been a fan of the both of you for years (since Anna's Eluveitie days). To answer your question, I love books. Reading means the world to me; there's something so cathartic of falling into someone else's world for a moment and learning about yourself. #HermioneGrangerIsMySoulSister
Yes yes yes yes, all of the yesses. This has to be one of my favourite collabs ever! I've loved you for a long time and I started adoring Anna since she was in Eluveitie, which at that time was probably my favourite band ever. And I still listen the old stuff till this day. Loved this! :D
My personal favourite storytelling media is singing. I’m working on my musical theatre career as well as a drama/sensory company for children and young people. Singing expresses more than I think anything else could for me. This is so interesting
I escaped into books when I was a kid to escape the abuse I suffered. I was always able to imagine the story as I read. I'm now in the process of writing my own book (as Melanie knows). I've never been one for writing down my ideas and planning it out, but it's all in me brain and it's like one of those GIFs where the keyboards are burning as someone types. I am going to start doing that though, just to make sure my book as good as I could ever possibly do.
i never would have thought loved anna for so long from the band she was in before being i love the hurdy gurdy and want more then anything to get one and learn how to play and then im a subscriber here on melanie so now learning your both related is strange and awesome
Me at the very beginning of the video: Oh this will probably be a great video. Hm. Anna looks familiar. Me when Anna says she plays the hurdy-gurdy: ... Hold on a minute... Me pausing the video to google Anna: HOLD ON A MINUTE! Me now: So excited to listen to her album after this video and slightly blown away that you're related. Really enjoyed this video too!
This video weirdly made me cry because I feel like my addiction to social media has done exactly what you said. I used to write music and play guitar so much more. I really love social media from one angle but I really wish I could learn to control it's hold over me.
I am feel the same. Ever since I was a kid I knew I wanted write for comics and animation. But as an adult I just constantly put it off. It's easier to just scroll through Facebook or watch youtube or whatever when not working then to put a lot of effort into something else beside work.
@@xinic5 I am learning though that what that is is A. Fear (I would advise reading a book called 'Feel the fear and do it anyway' and B. When we watch things it releases dopamine and we get a quick fix so to speak. Doing things that take a long time and dedicated concentration takes practice. You can do it! First you have to believe. I still believe because I have seen my brain learn and get stronger with determination. We can train our neural pathways to be more motivated and focused.
I write performance pieces like monologues occasionally and I have written a couple of songs but I think that my TH-cam Channel has been my main outlet for creativity. It started off more as a distraction and something to do when I was bored. But it blossomed into something really fun and rewarding 💛😆
Very inspiring conversation! I'm feeling great right now and this is rare haha So,I'll put a break in dark stuff for a while. I'll try to use my current wonderful feeling of passion to create something bright and gentle 💚
I'm gonna need "You can create when you're feeling great" on a shirt or something! Just brilliant 😊💚 Also looking forward to checking out your cousin's band. Sounds like my kinda music!
7:22 I love writing so much, both poetry and fiction (though I only occasionally do poetry whenever I feel like it and I haven´t been doing that for as long either), and the funny thing about it is that with fiction - because the purpose of poetry is literally to cope, for me at least lol - I don´t realize that I put things into the story, very subtly, that relate to whatever I´m going through at the moment. And when I read certain things back now I´m like "oh yeah, I wrote this at the time that xyz was happening" and it´s always blowing my mind that I don´t even realize this happening. It´s, in my opinion, one of the coolest things about writing fiction.
For me I definitely think writing has been my main way of dealing with emotional trauma or new experiences over the years. When I'm overflowing with emotions and my mind is overwhelmed, I write and the fog clears
So true! Negative experiences definitely birth amazing creations! I'm writing a book about the most negative thing that ever happened to me, lol but it's my story and get to tell in a positive way. Love ur vid as always 😊
Aaah I love that anna plays the hurdy gurdy! My dad plays it too, it's so cool to hear of other people doing that because no one ever knows what instrument I'm talking about :D
Hahaha, this os so surreal; I used to love Elvuveitie and I saw them life mutiple times as a teenager but I never made the connection with Anna! Thank you ladies for this talk!
I'd be really interested in a video about what it was like growing up with a cousin around your own age (who you were quite close + having shared interests) but growing up in separate countries.
I have loved your videos for so long, and have loved Cellar Darling for a while, so this video has made my life. I had never known that you were related
art, fiction, non-fiction, music, song, drama, dance all the things we are a story telling species. I write make art have performed in the past. I have stories clogging up I brain so now the challenge is to spew them out!
I sat and watched this with a cup of tea and thoroughly enjoyed it! 😊☕ I've loved writing since I was a kid and I'm very similar to you in terms of writing from your experiences/if you're going through something. If I'm having a day where I'm overthinking or I'm feeling rubbish and emotional, I tend to write through it and I find a lot of creativity gets drawn from that. It might sound a bit dark and dramatic haha! But I find it so interesting to hear where other people get their creative spark from, and I think the best things can sometimes come from past experiences or things you've been through because you can really create emotions through a narrative (hope that makes sense😅) My favourite forms of art, whether that be music, books, movies, artwork, etc. are always the ones that make me feel a whole bunch of emotions. Ahh I could honestly discuss this all day! 😅 I'd really love to hear more about your writing and creativity!☺️ I can't wait to for your book this year, wishing you the best of luck with the final touches, looking forward to reading it!! 😘💚
During my studies I went on the creative writing and poetry club; we mostly write about anything we wanted, but sometimes we've got the subject, like inspiration with other artist, or describe the person from the Bible, etc. I wrote poetry and at the time I thought: WHY do we get those task?! 😛 but all in all it was fun 😁
Interesting discussion. I think most of the themed writing tasks are intended as a way to 'hone your craft' - exercises. They're not always fun or inspiring, but you learn a lot from them. If you want to be an artist you practise painting, if you want to be a musician you practise your instrument...why should writing be any different? :-) xXx
OMG When you two talk it sounded as you are sibling and not cousin! You have to grown up together kind of close! But you are after all Irish! (You can talk!) And thank you for not talking Gaelic! (Janet Devlin and her sibling talk Gealic if they meat up!)
I read this comment just as I was thinking how incredibly different their accents sound!! They sound so different to me. I'm confused how human brains work 😂 Anna sounds like a Scandinavian person who has English as a 2nd language, mixed with a bit of Irish. And Melanie is fully Irish sounding to me.
Comment question: what is your favourite storytelling medium, and more importantly, why?
Melanie Murphy music one-thousand percent, followed by art, then literature
Books, I've been an avid reader for years
there are so many that i love i can't decide!!!!
Probs video games, as its an interactive form of story. Obvs not games like Insurgency, but stuff like mgs

You bloody Murphy women, hogging all that artistic talent - leave some for us normals 😂💚 what a lovely video
No SHIT!!! Literally didn’t know...followed her when she was the vocalist for Eluveitie. Fave Cellar Darling song is “Avalanche” from debut album.
