Subang Intetnational Airpirt was Kuala Lumpur's main airport (KUL) from 1965 to 1998, before the new Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) in Sepang was opened.
I was a trainee pilot for about a year flying Cessna 152 from a school across that terminal you're in. Such memories! You don't realise how crowded the area around XSP is until you get airborne. When I piloted the aircraft for the first time, I panicked as I tried to land because I could not see the airport amongst the urban build up! Hahaha.... I'm actually old enough to remember Subang from pre-KLIA days. Its almost like Kai Tak terminal.
This was a fun little review - and educational. An airline I never heard of flying between two airports I didn't know existed, on a route I hope to be able to fly someday. Thanks Kevin.
Fun fact, i studied in a building which could oversee the airport, as the singapore youth flying club also operates there and uses that runway as well. Thanks for sharing on that flight, i would not have known about that, since i never saw any firefly planes landing there and usually private planes only. That airport used to serve berjaya air if i am not wrong, took a flight from there to somewhere else which I forgot.
Wow, never thought of firefly as one that serves snacks onboard. Plus, the airports it serve seem really convenient. I could see this being a much more convenient option for frequent travellers between the two cities... the type who works in one and flies home to other for the weekend. Other than the airports possibly being "too cheap" for them, i could see mh and sq serving this route as well!
I dream myself flying this route but it’s quite difficult to me to get to these both airports. Love your review and thank you sm for adding maps. It helps me a lot to understand the route!!
I just found out that there will be a Park Hyatt Kuala Lumpur opening sometime next year in Merdeka 118. Can't wait to see you cover that place because I'm sure you will someday!
Szb serves mainly business customers. You are right to say that it takes 1 hour to reach klia which at peak hours can take up to 1.5 hours. I would rather pay more for convenience and the ability to go 'last minute' intro the airport and be on time for a flight. I would choose changi for longer flights. I like the convenience...
Very helpful and interesting review. Once I stop working in the US I plan to be based in Kuala Lumpur and I'd peviously looked at both airports and the Firefly flight option. I'll live with the tight quarters on board for the convenience this offers transiting between these two cities. Cheers!
Seletar reminds me of paine field in Everett, WA ( especially now that Alaska is the only carrier there now). I do like the ATR, even though it has been 30 years since I've been on one.
Another great, high-quality video! Love it! Greetings from Czechia. I have a little question. What was better for you? EVA Air’s BC or Qatar Airways’ Qsuite?
Firefly is a bus (coach) company here in Australia, makes more sense as an Airline name than a bus company. l think you have sat in more uncomfortable seats than this one or do you think its top of the list? "Miserable ground staff"? Do tell. This is the first time l have seen a review of this route 👍
My bag was 7.6kg and she made a big fuss about it. Then when I needed to check it in they (at check in) insisted on checking every one of my devices in the checkin bag for the type of battery they had. Just a bit of a power trip for no good reason. Didn’t wanna make the video longer just to talk about that haha.
Hi Kevin. I watch your videos and appreciate the extensive time and work you put into filming, editing and scripting. Thanks! One note please... Your camera does quite a bit of strobing in two scenarios of any of your recent videos (I only began watching 6 months ago). In fluorescent lights the strobing is the worst! And sometimes in quick camera sweeps your shots are jittery/strobing (strobing: the lobby of the airport, jittery: off the plane in MY a shot panning right to left on the tarmac.) I'm not sure what either of these causes are. When I look at other TH-cam travel vloggers -- I watch Dan and Dan and Oscar -- they shoot and edit exclusively on iPhones and I never see this issue. I wish I could give you some ideas where to look to fix this but I can't. Thanks for the hard work. :)
The strobing lights are a result of frame rate vs. light hertz/frequencies. In the past, it was easier to navigate as different countries use different hertz and so you could adjust your frame rate accordingly. Now a days with LEDs (99% of light strobing in my videos comes from LEDs) it is not as easy to predict when a different frame rate would be necessary. When I shoot hotel rooms I frequently need to shoot the same shot 5+ times to eliminate strobing since LED strobing is relative to angle and movement of the camera. In an airport, I don’t have the luxury of standing around and reshooting things multiple times. All of my videos are shot on latest model iPhones as well. In all of my trip reports I film entirely freehand as to not attract attention with devices in hand, which causes stutters at times especially when I’m panning and walking at the same time. If I was using a gimbal or steady cam, it wouldn’t be there.
Thanks so much for this. I'll be flying with them (on an ATR72) in November from Penang to Banda Aceh. I don't much like the aircraft either. But for $36 it's hard to complain. Looking forward to it of course.
Always nice to see a review of the XSP-SZB pair. They are a choice for people who wants nearer to the city transport from singapore - pity Changi booted them out in 2018 - your trip would have been much different. btw the Firefly jets is the company's second attempt - the last time was back in 2011. this time around i think they are going at it a bit more sedately, and will focus mostly domestically.
Back then they try to do from KLIA on their jets (which absolutely lost to their full-service MAS and also Airasia). Nowadays, the jets focusing on the Penang as main hub and only use SZB in KL route as their ATR hub. Much more less covered route by their main full service one.
CHangi was complaining that turboprops generate more turbulance in their wake compared to jets, so any aircraft following them has to stay further away, which strains the airport's capacity
I’ve done a lot of firefly in and out trips on the same day - one thing that always gets me is how hot as hell the 5 pm flight is ; it always seems that the plane is out of aircond gas by that time and it can really be very uncomfortable . Also it seems firefly planes fly at a lower altitude and can be quite bouncy - frighteningly so at times during evening tropical thunderstorms - .
Assuming you're comparing to other jet aircraft... Firefly indeed do fly lower as Turboprops typically do, also giving you more of a turbulence thrill along the way haha. Thanks for watching 🩴

Oh, ok, so we’ll see a BKK-MEL on TG business class on an A350!? 🤔😂 Great video as always, I love the ATRs, even with the tight config (well, I’m 5’5” 😂)! Thanks for sharing!

Hi Kevin, nice to see you feature Singapore's not generally well known 2nd airport, Seletar. Thanks for this review by the way including FireFly, just a minor mention and hope you don't mind but Seletar is actually pronounced the following way, Sir-Lee-Tar. Love your channel and unbias reviews, it truly makes my week watching and in some cases re-watching your videos, especially the ones featuring Phuket. Hope you are intending to make some video reviews in Penang.
It’s insane to have 40 flights a day between two cities (capitals, on top of that) that are just 320 km apart. Have they never heard of high speed trains? This is an ideal case for one.
@@tfft Then I highly doubt they're clever and rational people, as 1°) they do have land for no less than 4 airports (!) + large roads everywhere, 2°) roads and cars are far less efficient than railways and trains in terms of space per traveller, so having little land available is one *more* reason to prioritize rail infrastructure, 3°) their land space is not finite when it comes to claiming ever more polders from the sea, 4°) Singapore already has a rail link with Malaysia, so running HS trains on it would not claim any more space, 5°) With just 2 km², Monaco has inifintely less space available than Singapore, yet it has an (underground) train station: I assume that the Singaporean engineers know how to build a tunnel, 6°) Tokyo and many more Japanese metropolises have tons of high speeds lines with an even higher population density than Singapore. For short, no one can buy this bogus "no space" argument.
I have never thought of flying as enjoyable. Flying is a chore. I heard someone say flying is like people on a cattle car. I fly to get from point a to point b. Train travel is more relaxing. Enjoyed your video - always enlightening
I like their name, Firefly sounds snazzy! KLM once in a blue moon had a low cost subsidiary called BUZZ, loved that name too…much nicer than Transavia. Unfortunately that was a short lived adventure…..Thank you for the review!
not really. firefly, batik air, berjaya air and transnusa currently operate at this airport. there's gonna be sks airways, airasia and scoot launching flights from this airport in september.
I presume you've been in a moving car at some point in your life, right? The chances of dying in a car crash are 5 times higher than in a plane crash (0.23 vs 1.34 per million). So why on earth are you riding in cars?!? 😱

Firefly includes luggage in the airfare. For slightly more than the cost of a budget airline fare, that's a good deal if you have check-in luggage.
True! Thanks for watching 🩴

More than new generation jets, about the same as older generation.

If i am going to KL i would rather take from Seletar Airport as it lands at Subang Airport which actually closer to KLCC than the KUL airport
They also fly to Ipoh which is a pretty chill town with many good foods as well but the public transport will be lacking.
