Looks like it's a safety to me. Hes contacted at the goal line but the tackler doesn't have control of him. The ball carrier tries to continue to avoid his grasp and ends up in the end zone
Walter Fitzgerald: The Earl Hebner of the AFL, for those who aren' t wrestling fans, E. Hebner was the ref in the infamous Montreal Screwjob at the 1997 WWF (now WWE) Survivor Series Pay Per View Live Event who "Ordered the Bell To Ring" while Shawn Michaels had the Sharpshooter on Bret Hart
The line about being first or last sounds like something Vince Lombardi once said-"in our business there is no second place..either you're first or you're last"
Mike Stratton is remembered most from his 1964 tackle of Keith Lincoln that turned the tide in the AFL championship that season, giving Buffalo their first championship. Yes, the Bills have won it all in the past, so to speak.
If you were a Chiefs fan, you'd think the refs were against the Chiefs. You only see what the media highlights. The Chiefs have made up penalties called against them all the time!
It looks like the last contact is initiated outside the end zone to me, so it probably shouldn't have been a safety. But it's also one of those cases where I can imagine a referee having a difficult time ascertaining the exact spot of the last contact. Given camera quality back then, instant replay was infeasible, so I could understand that an error happened - but I definitely don't think that justifies trying to weasel out of talking about it by citing a non-existent gag rule.
I mean, they can. It’s just we’d end up with replacement refs again assuming the ref union has a backbone. It is a little absurd the amount of authority the ref union has compared to the players union.
@ players are released or sent to the minors, coaches and managers are fired, and workers get laid off or fired. A football referee’s job is a difficult one, but once you’re in the club, you’re in until you decide to retire.
@ again, that’s only because the refs union actually cares and after the replacement ref debacle the nfl is terrified to upset them. They literally could if they wanted. But it would actually cost them money.

West clearly ran backwards into the endzone..it was a safety. How sad to see that teams playing the Chiefs are still to this day blaming the refs for their own f*ck ups! LFG Chiefs! 🏆🏆🏆🏆🤘
What a joke. There's a lot to say about refereeing, but this one is just dragging a long gone man through the mud. Let there be no "gag-rule", but anyway, he never was obliged to give detailed explanations to fans and reporters, not even players - because an "explain me-rule" doesn't exist either. There's a reason, why there are no after-game pressers with the crew, like with players and coaches. Even if he made up a rule, it's a rule not relevant for the game on the field.
I understand forwarding progress but he ran backwards and had his foot in the end zone. It depends where the ball was. It could have easily been called either way though. The rules now with catches is bs. But it gives the referees more control so they can decide games instead of the players. Just another reason I quit watching the what was the best game ever and is now a horrendous me me me league that is played by sissys.
It didn't look like a safety to me because it looked like the player was pushed backwards when he was tackled.
Love this channels public broad casting station look. It’s unique.
Great job on getting this footage!
The referee took the cowardly route. Citing a gag order when none existed is some nasty work.

I like the videos about pre-superbowl games

Sorry but neither of them nor anyone has anything over Ben "Raider Nation" Dreith.

West did the one thing as a football player he should never do: he put himself in the hands of the official. A clearly dishonest one, at that.

Even in the 60s the refs were helping the chiefs
Some things never change.
People said the same thing about the Patriots.
If you were a Chiefs fan, you'd think the refs were against the Chiefs. You only see what the media highlights. The Chiefs have made up penalties called against them all the time!
They took 15 years off to help the Patriots now back with the Chiefs
They didn’t win a Super Bowl for 50 years. They couldn’t have been a very good at it.
The only mountain out of a mole hill, is the making of this video.
The field was a sheet of frozen slush!
I'll bet the bills fans wasn't too happy with the ref after that call.
Was this television footage? Even for 1963, it's hard to believe this could have been considered watchable. Where are the yard lines?
I mean the snow game at the beginning, of course. The footage from the game that concerns the bulk of the episode is certainly watchable.
This is probably newsreel. Any TV footage of this game likely does not exist.
Looks like the war zones of what we now call WWI
The yard lines are on the field

So the NFL didn't take the 2-point conversion? That sucks
NFL referees can’t be fired. Their union prevents it.

Forward progress just inside the one. No safety.

Very interesting stuff. Good job. One nit, though. The "we need some context" line is redundant and beyond tiresome at this point.
This guy is so full of himself it is ridiculous.
