Many thanks Kimo for a wonderful presentation on how to play Joy to the World with two different techniques. I find that playing with the index finger and thumb is a bit easier providing your holding down the right string at the right fret then just pinch your fingers together, it doesn't matter if you hit any other strings with your index finger. With the thumb down method its very important that you stop brushing the strings when you hit the melody note. As with life itself there is so much to learn about playing music ,technique is just one element, the most important one is to enjoy the musical journey. I would like to wish a very Happy Christmas and thankyou for your time with sharing your gift.

Thanks for this video, Kimo. Lovely sound from the Kanile'a - I bought one having heard and seen you play yours. I think the hardest thing about this technique is maintaining a tempo when you start out. As you say elsewhere, patience is the key, so I'm working on chord melody very slowly.

Good for you, Recremselrachnala (Is it Alan Charles Mercer?????). A little bit of patience in your practice regimen will return huge dividends. Let me know how it goes.

Hi Kimo, you got the name correctly, I usually use just Charles, but the name had gone when I registered as you might expect. Yes, following your technique it's going well and I'm working on La Vie en Rose. Thanks for all these videos, they are a great help.

Thank you, Kimo King of aloha. You make learning ukulele so easy and pleasant, without so many complicated chord changes, which are terrible hurdles for the ukulele learner who will have nothing impressive to show even after some. Thank you for making life so easy! Now I can play chord melody easily for Joy to the World.

Dale, thank you for your feedback. There is quite a positive dose of wisdom in what you say, especially as it has to do with minimizing needless complications. In the end, these only serve to ruin the spirit of the music. I'm GLAD to hear you can now handle Joy to the World. This would be a wonderful time for you to continue on learning chord/melody techniques. There's an entire other world of ukulele rewards ready to present themselves to you.

Yes, I'm now 66 and hope to follow the footsteps of the likes of Bill Tapia and play the ukulele to the age of 103!

Dale Ng Thanks, Dale! Bill Tapia is my hero. Based on his accomplishments, I'm delighted to know I've got decades left.

Hi Kimo, great video! I have a question for the pinch technique. Which strings does your thumb hit when you pinch and does your index finger go as high and hit the g string? Again fantastic video, keep them up!

Hello, BigKaDonk!!!! The index finger's primary function is to play the melody and it does this on whatever string and fret is required. The thumb's purpose is to provide harmony so all it does is to brush downward without "aiming" for any specific string. As long as the left hand is holding the correct chord, all harmonies will be accurate.
