I think the stuntman was Hal Needham (who later made Smokey and the Bandit,which originally was to be Jerry Reed in a B-movie) and yes he did misjudge and crash that poor Ford 500. Burt Reynolds ran,jumped in the water,swam over and helped him out of the car. He was ok.

Another home run was or could have been this sequel. The movie Gator. It's Burt's first that he directed. It completely shows Jerry Reed can act.One of the few roles he takes serious.Instead of car chases it's got some of the best boat chases ever.It seems to me that the movie live and let die had the same speed boat experts as the movie Gator
Yes I love Sharkys Machine n I also like Malone 1987 that was another underrated film pared up with long time friend Laura Hutton , n yes Gator was great I just wish it had 1 good chase in the film but still was a great movie, check out the Hustle 1975 n Excellent film
