    John Stockton is real definition of a team player

    • @guiwhiz
      @guiwhiz 5 ปีที่แล้ว +69

      @harold mccoy Umm... you do realize John Stockton averaged a double-double for his career . . . . a 20 YEAR career, right? 8 of those 20 years he averaged less than 30 minutes per game... and still averaged a double-double for his career. Also he averaged 14.5 assists per game, 3 rebounds per game (only on other point guard not named Magic Johnson had 3 rebounds per game that year), 2.65 steals, and 17.5 pts in one season. No one else has even come close to that stat line. In the NBA that IS a transcendent player who took over a game whenever he wanted. 14.5 is 30 pts AND he dropped in 17.5 per game that season. That is 47 points production per game out of the PG position. On a team that averaged less than 100 per game that season. He was literally half the offense by himself. Oh did I forget to mention his assist/TO ratio was nearly FIVE TO ONE that year. That is literally insane. No one else is even close. People talk about Magic Johnson and no doubt he was a better 'player' since he could play any position, but he played an average of 4+ minutes more per game. Give those 4 minutes to 'Stock' and who knows what his numbers would have looked like. Magic averaged slightly more assists per game but remember he played only during his physical prime and was a starter pretty much from day one. Stock didn't start until his 4th season. We won't even get into the difference in the 'supporting cast' of Laker's Showtime crew vs. Utah Jazz and ... well... Karl Malone and that's pretty much the only other All-Star on that squad for most of those years.
      10 time All-Star (and remember he only averaged more than 30 min per game for 11 seasons; which, basically, means every year he started... he made the All-Star team)
      9 time NBA assist leader (ditto . . . . he starts... pretty much he leads the NBA in assists)
      5 time all NBA Defensive team (only JKidd with 9 in 19 seasons and Gary 'the Glove' Payton with 9 in 17 seasons) putting him third in appearances by a Point Guard (Kobe Bryant had 12... unreal... I know right!)
      182 Playoff games (that is two+ SEASONS of NBA playoff basketball)
      15,806 assists (1st by a mile) 3,265 steals (1st by a mile)

    Believe it or not, Bob Cousy had to explain to the media, coaches and players that dribbling behind the back, through the legs, and passing behind the back wasn't just "flashy" or "showing off"...these were crucial skills that, someday, every point guard would have to master. • @MixedTapeVideosNBA
      @MixedTapeVideosNBA  8 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      +Mark Alford We went back and forth on this, actually. Different sites list them at different positions. The main reason for that is because they were more like combo guards that played multiple positions. Not only that but the positions weren't as defined back then. You could probably count them as either a point guard or shooting guard, but since we've always listed them as shooting guards in our previous videos, we kept them at that position for these videos in order to maintain consistency.

Much like football up until the 70's alot of league rules and sneaky foul play by a handfull of teams cause the leagues to be extremely unbalanced, the draft, free agency, the playoff formats and rules helped franchises like the Celtics and Browns dominate. To much BS went on in the 50's and 60's any real basketball enthusiast who really studied the games history or corruption and rules will tell you.

    There is always talk about Stockton's assists and if he would have gotten there without Malone. I get why, I think he would still be top tier, but I see how it could be debated. One thing I don't get is why everyone glosses over about him being #1 in steals of all time. That's a stat you get on your own hard work and hussle, alot of the greats don't even come close (thinking of the Glove who was known for defense, respectfully, since he is another one of my favorite players). When you are an all time leader in assists (offense) and an all time leader in steals (defense), and only missed a handful of games in 19-20 seasons. You are a beast and somebody worth having on the team because you make the whole team play better. A true silent leader that lead by example, and a true competitor. I love Stock!

That being said, Magic was the better player, but not the better PG imo. Stockton never wanted to be the #1 guy, but he made Malone a #1 guy by far.

Stockton was great at sitting at the perimeter and surveying the offense, or running a simple pick n roll. And he was a highly efficient scorer, who had great shot selection. I am Mexican-American and emulate this guys game on the neighborhood court. I even made a makeshift shirt and with a permanent marker wrote on the back STOCKTON 12. Young players don't know him and don't care about assists. I school them with many assists. I love seeing their frustration when I give up the ball for an easy assist and basket. I have won many games in the hood because of my assists. But they will never notice in the hood that assists still wins game too. I know that for the most part it was the fundamental assist that won those games. Assists are just one part of the fundamentals next to rebounds, defense, block outs, mid range shot and aggressive play. All lost now for the stupid 3pointer.
    Also, we need more Mexican-American players in the NBA .Many of us could play and assist just as good as Stockton, Nash, Paul but we get passed by for the white or black player with same skills. I have seen it happen to high school kids and middle school kids they just get bypassed with a bad perception that a black or white player play better. Just look at March Madness and see how many Mexican or Hispanic players you see. NONE. NBA. NONE. Just the facts. College Latino coaches and staff practically NONE. And no crap about Mexicans being too short because there are many 6',6'1, 6'2 and 6'3 Mexican-American players that play with all those fundamentals but get bypassed. Can we at least have an Asian American Jeremy Lin moment in the NBA?

    John Stockton needs to be the #1 on this list of pure pointgards. Magic played every position... his stats are skewed, not all PG. Magic even said Stockton was the best.

    • @candyxxv5834
      @candyxxv5834 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gary Wright Stockton was definitely the true PG. No one will ever be able to come close to his passing ability. Magic Johnson was listed at and played point guard tho. His height definitely played a big role, since people not used to defending PGs has to defend Magic. Magic and Lebron are kinda the same, since Lebron is said to be the greatest sf of all time, even tho he has and can play all 5 positions. It’s the fact that he’s listed at SF that gets him the ranking. Stockton was definitely the best pure PG in history, really defined what it meant to play point guard.

    In the 00-01 season the Nets were 26-56, then they traded Steph Marbury for Jason Kidd and the next season they went 52-30, top seed in the East, and made it all the way to back to back NBA Finals appearances.
    The Suns were in last place at 8-19 when they traded for Kidd in 1997, they ended up still making the playoffs that season and pushed the 2 seeded Sonics to the brink in 5 games.
    Last time the Knicks made the playoffs? Was the one season a 40yo Jason Kidd played for them.

For example, the top 10 Shooting guards have names I familiar such as Ray Allen, D Wade, Iverson, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan... , while I only know Steve Nash and Magic Johnson in the list Point Guards. I don't understand why???? Is it true that playing Shoot guard is easier to be famous?

    You forgot Mark Price! If you compare his stats against all the other point guard greats who didn’t win a title (Stockton, Nash, & Chris Paul) - He stacks up quite well. He’s most like Steve Nash and one of the greatest shooting point guards of all-time. He almost averaged 50/40/90 for 5 years! Go check out the stats and watch some video - Price should be on this list!

  • @kevinnuamah751

    Don't get me wrong Steve Nash was an incredible player. He was an amazing passer and was the first player to be lethal shooting off the dribble, inspiring the play style of point guards that you see today. But he isn't the 3rd best point guard in history. He should be lower on this list.

    The stats clearly show Stockton was the best point guard of all time. Magic ranked higher here just because his TEAM won championships, but championships aren't part of a single position or how well that position is played. In other words, how many rings somebody wears has nothing to do with how well one person played his position. Rings are given to the entire team, even the bench riders who may have not even played in the finals.

No gimmicks. No frills. And refreshingly, a female narrator and not some NBA fanboi, using slang and fotm expressions.

    By what you've presented, I have to say that Jason Kidd is the best. Stockton had Malone. Magic had Kareem. Who did Kid have? Oh yeah, Dirk. And not only did they win a championship, they beat LeBron, Dwayne and Bosh. Pretty impressive. The fact that he lead the Nets to the finals twice with good, but not great players around him is also very impressive. As are his stats. A great all around player--2nd in assists and steals? Holy cow. Fifth in 3 pointers? Very impressive considering he had a reputation at the end of his career for not wanting to shoot the ball. He was also one of the smartest and most competitive players I've ever seen.
