Great great Info Just what was looking for to better understanding Got lot questions answered BUT one not Jason ? when you shut down the VNC and Pi ? looking into commands is this RIGHT ? You can use that command Dale or use the shutdown option from the main pi menu on the desktop. Either way will work fine. 73, de KM4ACK

You don't have to have the Pi directly connected to a keyboard or monitor to do this. You can SSH into the Pi and run sudo raspi-config from the command line and enable VNC then reboot and connect through VNC to finish set up. I have 3 running headless that have never had a keyboard or monitor connected.
You do have to add a blank ssh file to the sd card after flashing before inserting into the Pi the first time to be able to connect through ssh initially.

You are correct in that you don't need to have the monitor connected to get this running. I found that most guys already have a monitor connected but want to learn to run it headless. I have covered the raspi-config way in other videos. 73, de KM4ACK

Jason, your videos are great! As a geezer, I'm just following the steps without much understanding. I pulled my Pi Build 1 card out (working great) and flashed a new Buster card with the SSH file to start Pi Build 2. When I go to the iPad VNC viewer, I get the message "the port on which the computer is listening for a connection could not be contacted." Any suggestions? Also, if you forget to create the SSH file, can you go back and add it after running a Pi Build? N4DPH

Well never mind :( I forgot to enable VNC on my new card, so no wonder it wouldn't work. After watching your video for the 5th time, I finally caught my error.

Do I need a keyboard and monitor to do the setup, install the build a pi? I am ordering my pi and need to know if I must order the keyboard and monitor also. I don't have anything that I can use. All my monitors are VGA type. Yes that is old! I just now had an idea. What if I took the power supply from an old computer and used the 5 volt from that. It should power many pi's.

You will need some sort of mouse, keyboard, and monitor. This can be physical devices connected to the pi or you can use another wireless device like a tablet and use VNC to remote in.

I have been setting up a Pi for radio and have been using this and a lot of your videos, thanks! I ran into a problem after setting up the hotspot. In your videos, you have your ethernet cable connected to the Pi, but I do not. So, when I disable the connection to the wifi, there is no internet connected. When I go into hotspot mode and try to connect my android devices (tablet or phone) to the hotspot, they see that the hotspot does not have internet behind it and they will not connect to it. I was wondering if there was something I am missing or there is a quick/easy fix before diving headlong into the internet to figure it out. Thanks!

Unfortunately I don't think you are missing anything. Some phones have this "feature" to prevent users from connecting to a WiFi that doesn't offer internet access. If there is a work around, I am unaware of it. Should you be able to figure it out, PLEASE share how you do it.

Hey, Jason. How do I get audio from the headless Pi 4B to my Windows 10 laptop? I'm connecting with Windows Remote Desktop Connection to the Pi, but if I play a TH-cam video I get no audio at the laptop. If I'm going to use my fresh install of Build-a-pi for radio, I've got to get the audio somehow.
Do I have to add a USB soundcard, or what?
I've already set the Windows client Local Resources to Play remote audio on PC, but it's not working.
    Thanks, 73,
    KO4RON

The build-a-pi script will only run with a monitor attached or through a VNC connection. You need to see the desktop before running the script.

looks like there's a major issue with USB detection on RPi4-4Gb version with the very latest image too. My USB Singnal Link Clone and a FE1.1S hub is not getting detected as a result of which I will have to settle for the RPi3B+ model.
