For the serve, Ben keeps his left elbox tucked in like a tennis player and he rotates his hips by spinning on his left left and moving his right foot forward from the momentum. I'd like you to try this also so we can see how it all comes together. That rotation is the key to his power, like a golfer using his hips to add yards to his tee shot. Youre leaving a lot of power on the table by not getting a full hip rotation.
This is fantastic! Really great insights. I didn't realize before how Ben just kind of pushes the ball in with his weight transfer. I tried this and it's great. I didn't get 100% power; I got like 80% power, but much more consistent than what I was doing before (which was more swing-ey) and with a lot more control over placement. Excellent work, Ed. More like this, please.
Couple of others said this but you didn't finish like Ben with his right foot inside court after a big hip turn..I think that a big part u might want to include..thanx jg
Ben mentioned to me that his arm is almost always fully extended - never bent at the elbow - for consistency. I see that your arm is occasionally just slightly bent at the elbow on the third shot slice. Ben always talks about eliminating the variable of the hinges - the elbow and the wrist. If they are locked, as you mentioned regarding the wrist, they eliminate variability. He also mentions "head over the ball."
Ed u are a legend keep doing what u doing u have tremendously helped my game so much. I have also mastered your laser beam serve and it helps me win so much more points. Keep going with the ben johns analysis
Would like to see you do JW Johnson’s backhand slice. Follow his same technique. Then try to analyze the difference between bing Jon‘s and JW Johnson’s would also love to see you do a breakdown of Tyler Mcguffin backhand slice return
That would be a fascinating one! JW’s technique is so unique to him and looks like it shouldn’t work, but somehow he’s mastered it. Definitely worth a look.
Loved this comparison video! Can you try a pro's forehand drop and drive? One thing Scott Moore told me in a lesson was that however you prefer to hit a drop (backhand or forehand), try to always do that side of your body. Don't bother practicing the opposite b/c you have plenty of time to set up your preferred stance for a 3rd shot drop. He basically said to get really good at that one side. Also, think about the apex being at your own kitchen line, so the ball is coming down by the time it reaches the net. Many people think the apex is at the net, but the best drops are already headed down by the time they reach the net.
Hip follow through is where more power is generated, this is why his back foot becomes lead foot post contact. Your weight is shifting up instead of forward.
In this particular clip, Johns positions weight over his lead foot with lead shoulder dip and hips closed past neutral right before incoming ball bounce. This allows knee extension to generate the swing with little forward arm movement. The timing of the footwork to set this position is the most difficult part. Johns tries to zombie walk to get in this pre set position on almost all of his shots.
Great video, really like the analysis of pros. Would love to see some return of serve options. Some pros are hitting more deep drives, others say they slice return 80% of balls. Curious to see which pros do what and in which scenarios.
@@edjupickleball Another good video idea would be "how pros close at the net". not just where all 4 at at the net, but also when you get players back, the technique to hit that awkward sideways topspin swing to hit it hard but not fall in the kitchen and close the point out. Johnson and Frazier do this amazingly well.
I set up a custom one that’s based off of the backhand deep serve drill. Here’s the QR code I made for it: www.edjupickleball.com/eds-custom-titan-drills
The way Ben hits his slice drops are akin to a golfer hitting a chip shot from off the green. The stroke and follow through are smooth, pendulum like motions which are how you get consistency. The wrist and arm angle stay completely static.
One major difference I noticed.... It seems Ben does a slight hop as he makes contact with the ball. I think this subtle jump helps him add the extra bit of touch needed
I thought serving must hit the ball no higher than the waist of the server. On this demo actual impact (when paddle hit the ball) was above higher than the sever’s waist. I don’t know if that’s acceptable.
What you’re not doing is bringing your right foot forward. He’s bringing his weight forward on his left foot and his right foot completes the cycle. Notice his right foot. That’s where the power is coming from.
Check out my vid on serving rules! But the TLDR: you are allowed to toss the ball up to hit a volley serve. Contact point below the waist. Exception: you are a pro level player playing in the PPA tour. Those guys have a different set of rules that don’t apply to us.
I'm not sure how he does it, but Ben's BH slice return is very slow. The ball moves very slow. No pop off his paddle. Jessie Irvine has a similar slow return.
I watched your videos but the one thing I noticed Ben always serves and as he serves he twists his body so his back foot lands in the court. You never did that why?
Great Video. But I don't think Ben has a top serve in the business. He rarely wins points on the serve itself. Tyson and others have more attacking serves.

yes! love it! Thank you!
This is just a great side-by-side breakdown. Extremely helpful!
Terrific analysis and instruction! Thanks!

This video is so good 👍🏼 analysis of his strokes slow motion is fantastic. Thanks man keep this type coming!
Thank you! Will keep em coming :-)

excellent analysis...more please
Heard ya! I’ll work on some more!
Love super granular comparison videos like this, thanks Ed!
Glad you enjoyed it!

That’s amazing! Laser beam is still one of my go-to’s :-)
Amazing instructional video. Thank you!
More of these!
Moooooore please. I can learn so much with this type of videos ❤
I learned a lot too making this video so I’ll definitely keep em coming!
I enjoyed this video. I would like to see you make more videos on how other pros techniques of their shots. Thank you.
🤝🔥
Super helpful! Thank you

loved the slow-mo
👌🏼
I really like this type of analysis Ed. The breakdown of shots in slow motion is really helpful.
🙌🏼🔥
I also want that slice drop 🤤
Love the video. Love the breakdown
🙏🙏
"I wish I was Ben" you said, towards the end of the video.
Bro, just be you! We love you, and your content!

Keep it up! Great video!
That is such a great Video. BJ=GOAT
Thank you

*i wish i was ben* SAME ahhaha nice videos!! thank you!
Awesome vid🎉. Did you memorize the angle a mo later?
How do you serve from the “kitchen “line????
Ben Johns does more lower body rotation and his right foot ends up forward and he is in an open stance after the serve.
Love it. Which titan drill are you using for this one

So is OK to side swipe the ball on a serve out of the air. I thought you had to hit under and up. Looks like he also made contact above his waistline
2:52 yes, you need rotate your right foot and lower body into the court to be like Ben Johns
, what setting are you using on the Titan to work on the backhand slice drop?
Backhand return! Except I dialed down the speed
Ben's right leg swings over to the front after the ball contact.
Yes and Ed missed this key element in his analysis. Rotating the right foot causes the hips to also rotate and produce more power.
Number 2 player.
I thought serving must hit the ball no higher than the waist of the server. On this demo actual impact (when paddle hit the ball) was above higher than the sever’s waist. I don’t know if that’s acceptable.
That slice is from Tennis
His ball toss is so high it honestly seems illegal
agreed 100 %
Ben uses his legs and hits to generate more power. He gets really low on his shots. Gotta be in great shape to do that for an entire tournament.
it looks like Ben holds the ball up a bit higher on the serve- I think if I hit the ball that high people might complain...
What you’re not doing is bringing your right foot forward. He’s bringing his weight forward on his left foot and his right foot completes the cycle. Notice his right foot. That’s where the power is coming from.
You completely missed the fact that he pivots in his left foot and swing his body around. A big point imo.
I did a freeze frame and put circles and text to point that out in several parts of the analysis 🥲
notice how hes tucking his arm
Wait i thougjt tossing the ball up and hitting high was against the rules?
Check out my vid on serving rules!

Ben is playing chess while everyone else is playing checkers...
Hey bro I want to give you eye catching thumbnails
I'm not sure how he does it, but Ben's BH slice return is very slow. The ball moves very slow. No pop off his paddle. Jessie Irvine has a similar slow return.
I looks like he’s served are above his hip
He’s not pretty close to ‘this kitchen line” when he serves as you said @1:10 but the baseline.
You’re right! Baseline is correct
And that my friends is an illegal serve by the great Ben Johns.
Watch where is feet end up on the serve.
It’s insane how Ben johns makes the game look so slow. I mean his 3rd shot drops look like the easiest things ever
Is the spinning your paddle a nervous habit? It’s a little distracting. Good video.
Here’s why!
instagram.com/reel/C2m9xrNLU46/?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
How to copy Ben johns? Just watch Frederico Stakstrud 😅
😱
Good thing Ben does not have the quirk of pulling his underwear out of the crack.
I watched your videos but the one thing I noticed Ben always serves and as he serves he twists his body so his back foot lands in the court. You never did that why?
WRONG! Johns back foot comes into the court. You did a 10 minute video and missed this? Pretty clueless.....
Just came here to say that this is a friendly game- NOT a sport…
You should’ve had multiple different clips of Ben doing these actions instead of just replaying the same clip
I’ll add some more next time! Thanks for the feedback!
Great Video. But I don't think Ben has a top serve in the business. He rarely wins points on the serve itself. Tyson and others have more attacking serves.
You are not following thru as ben does. Notice your right foot vs. his.
