Ed, I completely changed my serve and started serving as you described in your last video and for me it’s been a game changer, I’m winning a lot more points now on my serve, and it catches many players off guard, great points, thanks for the tips, new sub here!
This is excellent instruction Ed. I’ve watched all your videos, and the progression of what you’ve learned on your serve, and how you’ve explained it throughout your process, has been incredible. Thank you!
Was looking to improve my serve, and of course, as always, Ed Ju has a great video breaking down the mechanics. I love you adding in the detail of adding in JMV's crouched coiling into the Ben John's style serve, I honestly don't know how Ben John's serve is so powerful when he is so tall and upright. Love you work on YT, and love your tips on Reddit. Please keep it coming!
Great video as always! I know you said your trying to go pro one day. It would be cool to get an update on how your doing in tournaments, what your learning from playing in those from players that may beat you and how your incorporating those lessons learned into your game. If you were playing in ATL, I'd almost be just as motivated to see you play a few games as to watch the pros. Keep it up!
I think my goal is to be as technically or at least intellectually proficient as a pro. To actually compete as a pro is a whole different beast that would require it to be a full time job in itself. In my current limited experience with tournaments in APP and PPA, they are very expensive, long days that are really taxing. I’ll probably stay in the 5.0 competition bracket for a while longer but who knows- maybe one day I’ll be in the senior pros division 😂
@@edjupickleball With how popular you're getting on TH-cam, maybe you can get some exhibition matches for fun with a few pros and post those videos. I bet they would love the coverage and it would be fun to see how you can hold your own at that level!
Hey Ed, what I think Jaume is doing is he doesn't have a closed stance and that allows the hips to "uncoil" which helps the speed to be higher. It is like the accomplished golfer who stores up the energy in the coiling of hips and upper body which is released on the downswing. With the closed stance, you won't be as consistent at uncoiling because that stance is preventing that hip action that Jaume is talking about. I like your curiosity though and you come up with a lot of interesting ideas.
i use a 10-15lb dumbell to strengthing my wrist..i simulate the weight as being my paddle..i do wrist rolls with it also.really helps my roll volley speed....great video thanks
Love your content Ed! So well explained, and the graphic aids are great. You're a true student of the game. Hearing your process of distilling input from the top pros is really wonderful. Prior to this video, I've been studying your recent vids and comparing your work with Juame vs. your laser serve technique... It seems like lately you discuss using both the open and closed stance. It sounds like you're settling on a more closed stand with this hybrid video. Do you find that you're able to place the ball as accurately with your new hybrid serve? Is losing the sneaky placement of the laser beam serve the trade-off for more power with the hybrid? I'm reworking my serve from the ground up, so I'm wondering which to go with. I'm 59 years old with average strength, so I'm looking to optimize my power/placement/spin while minimizing long term injury risk. 😉 I'm thinking maybe closed stand is better if getting more of my body into it will reduce tennis-elbow while maintaining decent power and spin. I'm around 2.0-2.5, hoping for 3.0 soon.
In my games, I alternate between both of them. My open stance serve I can be the most consistent and accurate. But if I wanna be more ambitious, I’ll do a closed stance serve.
@@edjupickleball Makes sense. Thanks Ed! I've been practicing your hybrid serve, and it's really growing on me. Question: Where do you position the ball horizontally from left to right when you drop it on your hybrid serve? Also: Which SoCal city will your upcoming courts be in? I'm in San Diego, and would enjoy checking them out when you open. 🙂
The fastest serve would achieved if you drive with your your hips but used your left foot as a stop. Look at how the hardest forehands are hit in tennis- no one's right foot comes forward unnecessarily (meaning if they are not running toward the ball). This principle is observed in almost all sports where force is generated from a standing position- golf, baseball, hockey, etc. I started playing pickleball after playing all of those sports and from day 1 I've had a killer serve.
I am a 70 year old player and struggling hitting hard serve that stays in bounds. I am hitting with enough spin I believe but to no avail it goes over the opponents base line much of the time. What do you mean by using your left foot as a stop ?
@@bradw1261 You use your left foot as the pivot point to move your right hip but your weight drives into your left foot, not your right foot. This means that as your hip moves forward and up, you are straightening your left leg. You will feel force on your left heel and the outside of your foot. If you think it is hard to conceptualize, think of it this way: you are standing in front of a wall, with your left toes just touching, knees bent, right foot half a step away from the wall. There is a nail in the wall in front of your right hip. You want to drive that nail into the wall with your hip. How will you move your right hip to generate as much force as you can? You move drive the hip as you straighten your left leg.
You can toss the ball as high as you want on a volley serve. As long as the contact is below the waist 👍🏼 PPA pro players have a different set of rules though. They’re not allowed to toss the ball at all.
I hold the ball from the top (my palm is in a downward position), and I toss it up in an upward position and hit it in the waist area --> The group I play with keeps saying it's an illegal serve. They are saying I have to drop the ball, and I can't toss it up an in upward motion. The way I serve is exactly like you. You clearly toss it in an upward motion. Is it legal or not? In 2024, the PPA Tour also introduced a new "beta test" rule for professional players that requires the serve to be dropped from below the waist. The ball cannot be tossed upward, and the player's palm must face down toward the ground. The opponent must also be able to see the drop, which must be executed with an open hand --> This only applies to pros and not recreational players.
I really learn a lot thru your inputs bro. However, i dont have good paddle as of now i am just using PLYWOOD paddle cost 3 dollars here in the pHilippines bro.😢 i hope u can lend me a paddle even if it is used. 😢😥 thanks bro
He is throwing the ball up, which is illegal, I have been told. I think the PPA needs to just force everyone to do the drop serve. You can get lots of speed doing that server, and you don't run the risk of a disqualified serve.
Ed. Your content keeps getting better and better. Love these lessons on the serve. Looking forward to more content.

Can you make a video on Quang Duong's serve such as the one he was using against Ben Johns in singles in the PPA tournament a month ago?

Good video! Can you explain if it legal for the foot to land in the court in the serving motion. I notice your foot does go into the court. Thanks.

On your serve, what grip do you use? Continental? Eastern?

good wrist lag. it shows on the slow mo.

Is it okay for the ball to come up a little when you serve? Just as long as we contact the ball under our waist right?

Isn’t it a foul when the momentum carries your foot to the baseline during serving?
1st thing I noticed!
Nice
What paddle is that?
selkirk labs project 002
does anybody know if it’s illegal to do a little jump and then serve?
You can jump into your serve, but at least one foot must be on the ground behind the baseline at the moment of contact with the ball.
