Great review. You've highlighted why it's different and why I love this game - it uses a very realistic physics model which means that if you just like arcade racers, you will be sorely disappointed. However, if you're the sort of person who would take a car out for a drive on a quiet evening or enjoy real track days, then this is perfect. I can happily fire up AC and take a car out for a spin on the Nurburgring just because it's fun to drive. I also currently use a gamepad (PC) and it is doable providing you set things up carefully to suit the game and your style of driving. That alongside sorting out the FOV means you can catch most slides even with assists off.
As someone who owns AC on the computer, I consider the DLC to be worth the price. Especially the one with the laser scanned Nürburgring, if you have the game and you see the DLC on sale nab it!
They still haven't fixed that bug where you change gear and it jumps into neutral For a second I see. Don't know if it's just a ps4 bug as it don't happen in PC version. Also I've heard ps4 version has slight screen tearing and little shudders and judders at times.
Field of view strongly affects the sensation of speed in racing games. Often times, it's set too wide (things look faster) or too narrow (things look slower) and with no way to change it.
I am not too sure how many people know this about the ColecoVision, but after you start a game quickly unplug the Coleco controller. Then plug in an Atari 2600 controller and you are able to to control the game but only be able to use 1 action button. I am not too sure how many Coleco games use the two action buttons for two different purposes, but this will provide you with better player control. Obviously this will not work with games that take advantage of the numeric keypad.
This game didn't grab me at first, but after I started downloading mods it became the greatest driving game I've ever played. I highly recommend the PC version. Add "Content Manager" and CSP to it - these are bundled together. That combined addon adds features to the game, and is required by many newer car mods. It also improves the interface somewhat, and can greatly improve the graphics. I had little interest in the European "super cars" that the vanilla game focuses on, but mods fixed that. Nearly every car I use or race against in this game were made by modders. I have an El Camino in my game, also a Bluesmobile, haven't seen an Eagle yet or a Ferrari 308 though. Some mods aren't very realistic, but if you take some time to learn how they work you can edit and improve them. You'll need "Content Manager" (as mentioned above) to unpack the files, and then it's easy to edit. For example many people give their cars unrealistic amounts of power, but a simple edit of one text file (usually called power.lut) can change the torque/horsepower curve to match reality. That file is just a list of RPM values and torque measured in Newton*meters - very easy to edit. If it has a turbo, then you also have to look at engine.ini to change or remove the boost. I found that the best way to get into this game was to drive slower cars. Driving a super powerful car will just get you frustrated. Pick a car you like that isn't too fast, pick a track that you want to learn, and load it up in "Track Day" mode. Put other cars on the track that are comparable to yours, but since it's "track day" you're not really racing them, they just add to the scenery. I found this was a great way to chillax and learn the track at the same time. I learned Sebring in a 1978 Mustang-II, for example. And yes, that was fun. Bouncing off walls in a GT40 wasn't fun at all, it just got me angry. If you download car mods you can start up races (or "track day" fields) entirely with Miatas and 20th century Mustangs and Camaros and Datsun 240Zs and those old low powered Porsches and DMC-12s and such. These cars are manageable and it's easier to have good races with them without being a pro. Even though I've played this game for a year now, I still spend most of my time in slower cars because they're less punishing of mistakes. I also find them more relatable. Personally I like older cars with no driving assists, and this is a factor in how much power is manageable. Some might prefer assists especially if you're using a thumbstick controller. Driving assists will make it easier to handle a more powerful car, but at some point they will still be treacherous. The biggest flaw in this game is the packaging - the UI, how it handles ends of races, etc. That aspect is unfinished. If this game had a Gran Turismo style career mode it would be the perfect driving game.
Never been to keen on simulation racers, as I more or less grew up playing arcade racers. The nearest I've gotten to a full out sim is the Forza games that came with my 360 at the time, but to be honest I mainly played to listen to the music I had installed on the Hard drive, so this looks like something that I would regret buying even for cheap.

Obviously this game feels better on a racing wheel, but the controller gameplay needs to be praised because its actually good! Unlike project cars, driveclub, or need for speed, I feel like this game has better pad utilization and it feels damn good using a controller. I have a video on my channel where I'm racing an M3 using a controller, watch that and tell me a controller is bad on assetto corsa.
If u own a decent pc it's probably better to get it there. Just cus of the extra stuff u can add to it thru nods whether it's cars or tracks or graphics at ever
Saying to play a game doesn't answer the question. How is Assetto more of a Sim than Gran Turismo? Does it have tuning options? How indepth are the tunings? The same as GT? Does soft rear and stiff front spring induce understeer? Can you tune the transmission? What makes it more of a sim?

Racing games always look interesting, but at the same time I'd just be confused as heck. So many different cars... all I know about cars is that I have a silver thing on wheels in the garage, it takes me places if I argue with it enough (AKA, if I find my keys), and it's not on fire. Other than that, I know nothing, and cars all look the same to me. So I see a game like this and tend to be a bit stunned by the sheer amount of stuff in them. Always seems like one of those things where tons of other people understand, but I dont. I tell ya though, these sure have come a long way from Pole Position or Rad Racer on the NES. Those are still absolute classics though. Always liked how the car in Pole Position just violently detonates if you touch anything, because that makes perfect sense. There are no exploding/shattering cars in these new games, there should be though, right?

The developers are not really shooting for the mainstream, at least not in the same way that Microsoft (Forza), Slightly Mad (Project Cars), and Polyphony (Gran Turismo) are. First and foremost, Kunos are a racing simulation developer and a very small one at that, they are catering to a different market than the above mentioned developers and instead are offering a sort of second level beyond the usual sim-cade experience. To put it another way, they are giving players on the console a opportunity to play a serious sim because so many other developers already have the sim-cade market pretty well locked down.

I have the T500RS wheel with the TH8A shifter. Yea, it's a great game, no, the shifter don't work like it does on Project Cars or Gran Turismo on PS4. I hope they patch that shit up. It's annoying. Because of that the game just collects dust.

I will say that I think beginners should probably start with all the assists off at first though, I know it sounds counter-intuitive and it may lead to some genuine frustration at first but starting with all the assists on does not really teach you anything, it does not really push you towards higher realism settings. Starting with all the assists off allows you to just start learning how to play properly from minute-one and go from there.
Don't buy Assetto Corsa if you are a console gamer, you are only supporting the PC elitists if you do so. Buy Project Cars 2, Gran Turismo Sport or Forza 7 instead. That is the ethical choice. It is much better that Kunos don't get any money from console peasants, that this game flops on console. That is what PC gamers want. Kunos should not be more successful, their game should not be played by others.
