  • During Week 15 of the DNR Conservation Officer Training Academy, recruits completed water safety training, including some time in an ice bath. "This training teaches the recruit how his or her body will respond if they fall through the ice into the water," said DNR Recruit School Commander Sgt. Jay Person. "We work on a lot of frozen surfaces, and there is always a risk of falling through. This training was important because it helps recruits understand what happens to their motor skills in ice-cold water." With emergency medical technicians on hand and monitoring each recruits' vital signs while sitting in the ice bath, the DNR instructors evaluated fine motor skills and the recruit's condition. Everyone talking about the ice baths here is missing one key detail. When we take baths as athletes, those are around 50 degrees. This is 30.

I’ve taken jumps into fresh snowmelt off the Rockies to a quick jump in Superior during March and cold cold works different than regular ice baths. It’s stings to your head and hits like a thousand knives all over your body. It gets hard to move. That’s why they have to test your motor skills. Gets hard to swim/get out of

I assume certain types of tests/training are region specific.

hehehe I was a figure skater for years growing up. I've developed a very nice tolerance to cold. I mean those dresses are basically fancy one piece swim suits. Plus growing up in the Puget Sound, the only water we have to swim in is either right off the mountain or the freezing even in summer sound.

I think women should highly apply for these types of jobs. I have never met a female conservation officer before and I bet they would do well in this type of field especially with their love and kindness for nature and wildlife.

They have to do more than be kind to animals. They also are the cops of the forests. They would be great except for the catching criminals aspect.

I agree. I am considering applying for a conservation position and going through the training. I have watched numerous women who are capable and ready to handle the position. It's a police officer for nature. There are female cops, why can't females be conservation officers as well
