As someone who kinda dislikes the decorating aspect (I end up getting stressed out about it not being Perfect Enough), I ended up going back to New Leaf. I found that the gameplay of NL works better for me than NH. I prefer the slightly more restricted decorating options of NL. I’m currently working towards the museum renovation before I’ll eventually start trying to get The Roost. While NH is more open in terms of decoration, it feels very limited in everything else. I’m still kinda annoyed that the stores don’t upgrade when they did in NL. And I’m still somewhat bitter that they got rid of my boi, Dr Shrunk. He was one of my favourite characters in NL and I’m sad that he doesn’t exist at all in NH.

I’m with you. The 3DS eShop closure this past spring got me back to playing my 3DS again. When I fired up New Leaf, I realized how much more I love it than New Horizons. Ive been playing NL pretty much daily ever since, and haven’t touched New Horizons in months. Like Kora said, NH in itself is a good game that’s worth playing, but it leaves a lot to be desired for veteran players. I think it lacks a lot of the heart and soul that can be found in New Leaf and other previous instalments. From a creative freedom standpoint, NH is unmatched in the series. But beyond that, it’s surpassed in almost every other way by New Leaf imo, which is a game 7 years its senior. Your town in NL feels more like a living breathing community full of actual individuals, whereas your island in NH comparatively feels like a bit of an isolated, plastic personal sandbox full of action figures and standees for you to dictate as you please. Some players may prefer it that way, and as a creative person myself, I initially had a blast with it. But once I had all my dream villagers and the island exactly how I envisioned it, my interest started to wane when I realized just how much was missing. Trying to socialize with neighbours now yielded shallow, repetitive dialogue that made it obvious you were talking to NPCs as opposed to neighbours. A trip to the post office to see Pelly or Phyllis had been replaced by a post card stand. A visit to Harriette had been replaced by looking in a mirror … beloved characters who helped give the town life were nowhere to be found, like copper and booker, the resetti’s, and Pete the mailman. So much of the feeling of community and overall soul that defines animal crossing was no longer there, so going back to New Leaf was like going back home to all of it. I still look back fondly on my time in NH, but for the sake of future Animal Crossing games, I also sincerely hope that Nintendo doesn’t let its commercial success stop them from realizing the areas where they fell short this time around

I went back to New Leaf too after playing New Horizons for a year in 2021.
I'm not into decorating and started getting bored with NH after 3 months.
At most I only play New Leaf once a week usually only once or twice
a month but I still like it.
I played New Leaf a lot from February 2, 2015 when I first started playing until 2018
so that's why I don't play New Leaf a lot now. I burned myself out but I still love the game.

My biggest worry with New Horizons is that Nintendo will see the huge sales numbers and take the series even further in this direction instead of pulling back towards making another that is closer to New Leaf.

New Horizon was (very unfortunately) my first Animal Crossing game, but have played Nintendo games over 3 decades. They will continue the trend of bastardization, ruining the IP's we love in the pursuit of a greater market share. I don't know if it hurts more that Zelda sucks now or that people think Tears of the Kingdom is a great game, but I can tell you we won't be back to New Leaf for another 10 or 15 years. It takes people time to realize the shiny new thing is not as rewarding as the old thing made with love.

My wife and I started playing on my son's island when he got the game at release. He stopped playing after the credits rolled at the first KK concert. My wife likes to fish now and then. I'm still there, same island, every day, 5,600 hours of play time, (which isn't entirely accurate, since I'm keeping up on a list of dailies for all three of us). Got the five-star island rating, all the golden tools, finished every nook miles card (Pen Pals was the hardest, since every letter had to mean something). I've collected every DIY, hit max bells thanks to selling on Nookazon a few times a week. I've taken to dumping a few hundred million bells in the trash every so often. (No, that wasn't a typo). It's not about the bells, it's about seeing all the folks out there who are still playing. Also, thanks to Nookazon trading, I haven't had to buy a NMT for over two years. My Nook Miles tally is over 3 million now. And we still have one of our starter villagers. Shout out to Fuchsia! It took me about a year and a half to get into HHP but I have been building feverishly now that I figured out a motivation. I'm building vacay homes for all the villagers who've left our island over the years when I see them waiting out front. It brings a smile to my face whenever I see one of the older villagers on the back beach or playing in the water. I guess I'm rambling. I don't miss any of the old game mechanics, because this was the first AC game I have ever played. Are there some things I would like to have? Sure. Batch crafting would be ever so lovely. Mini-games would be wonderful. Is it enough to make me stop playing? Nah. BTW, I'm 55, BeeKayCee911, so you're not alone as an oldster. ;-) Will I stop playing? Maybe. Someday. But not just yet.

It feels surreal that it's been that long since the game came out, but at the same time that it hasn't actually been long enough. This game feels like an old friend, like something we've always had around, and I think when it came out it saved a lot of people from losing their minds or deciding that life wasn't worth it. Your villagers needed you, your friends needed you, there was so much to do and it was one of the few ways to stay connected in a slice of life way.

I still love ACNH and have been playing it for approx. 1800 h without ever really "finishing" my island 😅 I kept making new plans for the design of my island but I was never fully satisfied with what I came up with. Then, my ADHD brain lost interest for a couple of months and I came back to make new goals, changed a few things, hunted a few different villagers, then the cycle repeated. I also rebuilt my island like 3 times. I guess it will forever be unfinished but yes - new dialogue would be SO good. I love talking to my villagers.

    1. Not caring about being the richest islander around. I burned myself out on this game because I only cared about making the most profit.
    2. Not caring about who my villagers are. Tier lists ruined me. I used to think I’d only be cool if I had the most popular villagers, like Raymond.
    3. And finally, no time travel. I’m going to experience this game at a slower pace, and not rush to get everything right away. Hopefully I stay with it long enough to last at least a year.

I never played any previous animal crossing games but during the COVID lock down i bought the game and the first i didn't really like the game but i slowly started to love it. During lock down i found out me and my wife we're going to have a baby so I will always associate the birth of my baby with lockdown and animal crossing lol. Once my daughter was born i stopped playing 100 % but i put over 1000 hours into my island and am very proud of it. I put my daughter's into game and my wife even though they don't even play it in my rationale was that one day I was going to give him a Nintendo switch to my daughter with my island. 😊 But for me my animal crossing Island is like a portrait of my life in 2020 and basic timeline. It's crazy because i want to start playing again and I know exactly the last project I started right before the pregnancy and it was like a garden. For someone who's all about horror games fighting games and FPS shooters animal crossing was like a very different type of game that I'm usually playing I think it kind of like calmed me and help me and help me and get into a much better headspace that wasn't all like amped up all the time I was much more relaxed I was smiling when I was playing video games not yelling at my TV 😅.

I'm playing more now than ever. My wife and I started a shared island together on the same switch. It's really fun because when I stop playing she often starts and continues our little projects. The only thing that drives me crazyyyy is that catalog items is per user and not shared between users even if we are on the same Nintendo :/ Sometimes she needs to start the game as me just to order an item or vise versa. But playing together like this has added a new level of fun because we each want to out due each others creations lmao.

I picked up NH around day 1 like most, but I really only played it up until I got Isabelle, and I tried to replay it multiple times between bouts of restarting and juggling tons of busy work from going into college. Finally, now during the last semester of my college time, I'm doing a new play through with friends and I even have family playing on my island with me together this winter break.
I feel so strange looking up a lot of your videos in the past few days on things like how to get more bells as a beginner or flower guide stuffs, and fast-forward two years on your YT and you along with a lot of other people here are viewing it with such nostalgia. While I do feel like I missed the gold rush of community content with things like the online thirdparty services and when it was all the hype of social media, I feel a strange sense of being like a lonely god, forging this island and relationships with the villagers into something beautiful yet also something that almost nobody will end up seeing.
I'm not really sure where I can find an active AC community now, but I've seen so many of your videos lately and stuff from other animal crossing youtubers you collaborated with, and I really would like to find a community I can hang with and share my island and progress as I continue towards a satisfied sense of completion.
Also big fan of your work, keep it up!

Genuinely really don’t like how Nintendo handles the update model. It already has a ton of issues but due to how long they took to implement pre existing stuff to a game that doesn’t have a lot to do in comparison to even the first game, most of the players stopped playing before they got the good stuff. Not to mention how they said that there’d be at least 2-3 years worth of updates and outside of 2.0 there was nothing of substance added. I feel bad for the dev team since there was a lot of effort out in but higher ups seemed to want to continue their already controversial business model at the cost of a game people wanted to play for years to come.

Animal Crossing New Horizons never fails to bring warmth and peace to my life. Every time I hear the theme song play I immediately feel seen and loved. I close my eyes and embrace every calm moment ACNH gives me. It truly is one of the best games I’ve ever played. It doesn’t matter how long of a break I take from visiting my island, I always feel as strongly connected to it as ever. I remember that first year so vividly, because we were all inside playing together. The long waits between small updates spoke volumes to how unprecedented the user engagement was. It’s definitely
not ACNH’s fault we all felt some type of burned out after a year or so. It was not perfect, but it eventually got there with the 2.0 update. I found myself coming back after the long break I had between my original playthrough and now! Thankfully I kept my OG island. The memories I have there are so sweet! I plan on taking care of this island as long as possible. One day in 20 years I’ll reopen it and reminisce in this special game. I am really excited for what could come with a “Switch 2.”
I wonder if they’ll change the series to fit a more “rise n grind” play style since that’s where most of the complaints stem from?

The only thing the next Animal Crossing needs is to bring back the ball. For anyone unaware, the Animal Crossing game on gamecube had a ball that would spawn somewhere in the town and you could kick it around. That's all it does, but I think it would be neat if it came back.

I'm glad this was a positive video! For me I got acnh on my birthday on 2020 (September) so by that time all base features were added so I didn't have to worry about that. I do feel a bit sad I wasn't apart of all the community before I got the game though sometimes, but that's okay. Halloween was just around the corner then so it was a really good start for me to play. My big complaint is so much that was free in New leaf is now behind the switch online paywall...can't even get every fruit to complete more recipes without it... but new horizons is definitely a great game it's just different and was affected by the state of the world when it came out

Been watching your videos after returning to ACNH last week- my first title was Wild World and have played every title since, played New Leaf pretty much daily for a year then kept revisiting occasionally up to and after the Welcome Amiibo update, so I'm another one of those "veterans" who was disappointed with all the missing content, and that our first major update was also the last update. I played ACNH pretty much daily for about 3 months before doing the occasional drop in, but like I said.. I'm back 3 years later and have been sinking time into it again.
I feel like just finding a way to play where I can enjoy it despite its shortcomings has worked well for me. Like you said in your video, I've been going back and finishing what I abandoned years ago due to disappointment. I had never been a time traveler personally, not in previous games or during my active period of ACNH, but found it was necessary for my current enjoyment. I'm currently on NMT island 342 on the hunt for my last few dreamies, been visiting "treasure islands" to catalogue furniture that stubbornly has not showed up in my store so I can finish off my themed houses, and just been enjoying myself again now that I can accept that although not what I wish the game was, it *is* "complete" and i can go about "finishing" my island now. It made me sad looking back at my abundance of letters from friends who used to actively play, and think about times my island was at full capacity so no more visitors could come and toot their ocarina, but there's a weird sense of peace. I love the snow and don't get it irl so I'm looking forward to playing in the snow on my silly little island.
Thanks for your videos! They help pass the time while island hopping :)

I'm not usually someone who sticks with one game for more than a few months. However, I played ACNH for over 2 years basically every single day! When the final update came out, I really felt like they were cutting it off too early. I think it had at least 1 more year in it before people WANTED to move on. I was able to accomplish most of the goals I had set for myself and it was hard to stay excited about New Horizons without anything new... on the horizon... I hope the next AC game is made with a more long term plan in mind, but also dread it becoming a micro-transaction mess...

Good observation about how playing ACNH 12 hours a day during the pandemic probably burned out a lot of people. But yes, it's really nice to think about the new players, or players who *didn't* play 12 hours a day. :) I personally like to browse the Animal Crossing tag on social media sites, and a lot of players keep posting really pleasant, creative, funny, and wholesome stuff.
I have 1,535 hours in New Horizons, and I still pop in every now and then to play, usually because of the DLC islands. Plus, it's just a great vibe to leave it on if I'm relaxing indoors, but want some ambience.

Went back my island this week... And I was shocked how long it took to load everything. The game was lagging much more than I ever remembered (on TV screen, works much better in handheld mode) and I tried to do a bit of island maintenance. Just to remember how desperately the game needs those +1000 quality of life upgrades we never got. I can't make another island on my switch, which is beyond absurd. I wish for a new game, but it's not coming. Just like all my favorite games, I'll be old and gray before they come out, IF they ever come out.

I think NH lacked in the immersive part of Animal Crossing and mainly catered to the people who liked making their clothes, patterns for paths in their town and styling their house. The villagers just feel like sets of dialogue that you won''t regret skipping because you'll see it a million more times, the island feels so empty all the way up until you either finish it and have it look exactly how you want or just give up because you could never get all the items you needed to fill it up. When I was younger and played the gamecube version (Other animal crossing games were out at that time, but NL wasn't and i didn't own a DS) I did spend way more time on the decoration aspect than my older brother, who actually knew how to play the game, but we both agreed that we liked playing mostly because of how alive the villagers felt and how entertaining they were to talk to and try to become friends with. The thing with NH is that, once you've completed the main story and decorated the island to your liking, that's pretty much it. You can log on daily to do small tasks like collect food to make something or see what's in the stores, but if you have the museum filled up and all the clothes and items you could ask for, then you're basically done. There's other things you can reach for like golden flowers or golden tools, but given the fact the golden tools still break, you won't want to use them because they took so long to make and you won't really have to if there's nothing new to catch. But with the gamecube version and even NL, there was always something new to do with the villagers, some task, some game to play, maybe one of them would have moved away in the time you were gone. It felt real almost, like this was a town you lived in and the villagers were friends you had to learn about to get along with and grieve once they left. But NH, they're just like shiny keychains, decorations to make your island look prettier. And they don't leave unless you say they can.
Overall, I do like NH and I have invested a lot of time into the game, even picking it up again recently due to sheer boredom. But, it doesn't feel like an animal crossing game really. It feels like while focusing on the designer aspect of the game, it lost what really made it special to a lot of people. What good is having a villager rivalry when the villager doesn't fight back or say anything actually rude? To me and a lot of my friends who played the game, that was a core feature of it that is completely lost in it's newest installment. Having a villager you hated and constantly butted heads with was an experience unique to this game that won't be replicated in NH. Same with having a favorite. Now the only way to love or hate a villager is by their design alone, which is what created a weird, toxic community around them back when the game blew up (Raymond and Marshall).
Though, there is one element of the game that stayed in NH that I appreciate. In every animal crossing game, when you go to able sisters, Sable (the shy one) won't talk to you the first couple of times you approach her. But, over time, speaking to her daily will have her slowly open up to you and eventually gift you patterns she created for you. I liked that, it made her feel like a real person. That still exists in NH but it feels, shorter and less impactful. And that used to exist for all of the villagers too. The whole idea of moving away to a whole new place, filled with people you need to get to know and starting from the ground up to make the town a place you call home, it's sort of lost. I remember telling a friend about the game NH and how to play and she responded "So, it's basically a dictatorship?" and i had to agree because, that's what New Horizons is. It asks nothing of the player and tries to give you everything while still being limited in weird ways. Like, how can I terraform the entire land but not the beach parts of it?

I told myself I'd stop when I complete the DLC (which I waited a year to get). But I find it a real slog. So I don't know what to do?

This video makes me want to reset my island and experience it all over again. Maybe I'll do it one day.

ACNH is just barely part of my top 10 favorite games. I enjoy it.
