It's a fair opinion, I can understand it.
I agree to a degree, specifically from the point of 2.0 being how New Horizons SHOULD have been at launch.
And the issue of villager dialogue is something that probably will never be resolved and will continue into future entries, sadly.

      @Twinklethefox9022 ปีที่แล้ว +19

The villager dialogue doesn't bother me. What does bother me is that they didn't give reese a role at all. They could have had it where she gives you a diy you don't have yet (the game even has it where your cook would give you a new recipe in the dlc) I don't know why they didn't do that. It would make getting diys way easier since the game doesn't have it where new diys take priority over ones you know (outside of celeste) I know it's to share with friends but, it's annoying now that every diy I get now is ones I already have and I know I'm missing some like a gold rose wreath. If it was new ones are brought up first and then it would go back to random ones you already had, it wouldn't be an issue.

I really enjoyed New Horizons. But I just feel like things were too easy. You didn’t unlock things anymore because everything was handed to you via an update. There was no progression.
The villager interaction was super watered down. The holidays were the worst for me. Halloween used to have you interacting with your villagers to determine what scared them so you could work for it. Toy Day used to have you talking to villagers for hints about what they wanted as a present so you felt accomplished when you got their present right. The Fishing and Bug Tourney used to have you actually competing with your villagers for the trophy. And the coffee shop mini game where you made coffee for your villagers was removed entirely.
Also I wish we had Tortimer Island mini games since we got 8 people multiplayer.
I did love the new features like villager hunting, the decorating, cooking/farming, and the terraforming. I just felt like NH was more a decorating game than a town sim game.

    • @d-jams
      @d-jams ปีที่แล้ว +6

The villager hunting was not what Nintendo thought it was gonna be when people freaked out about not having Raymond, or Sherb in their islands. And they didn't think that hundreds of trips would be made in a single play session, that's why Kapp'n was made to where you could only visit the islands he could take you to once per day, cause since it was only 1k NM they had a reason to limit it imagine paying 3k NM to visit an island that normally will be similar to a regular NM island but they limit you to one trip per day, that would be dumb.

I agree that things felt handed to us. One of my favorite memories of playing City Folk was talking to Sable every day because I was messing around with an npc just to one day have her say something different! I played every day for me unlock her backstory and gain a friendship as a reward. I was excited for a similar experience in NH, but it didn't take nearly as long because they wanted to give me crafting patters. The chit chat afterwards didnt feel as rewarding, so I felt that disappointment there. 😅

Villagers used to have hints of individual character too, even if a bit randomly generated, despite each being stuck into one of like seven archetypes. New Horizons really took that away, and only sort of gave it back later, yet still not to anywhere near the level of New Leaf. I love that you brought up Toy Day too. No joke, the first year I played New Leaf, I didn't get enough hints about what everyone wanted, had to guess my way through some, and left a few villagers disappointed because they didn't get the gift they'd hoped for, and I was so crushed upon seeing Kid Cat look sad and say "Oh... But I didn't want a drum set..." that I decided every December after, I'd make sure I got as many hints as possible to make sure everyone has a wonderful Christmas. The game made me feel a real drive to play all December long each year and give my villagers a happy Christmas, that's something powerful that no other AC game I've played has accomplished.
Also, don't forget that in New Leaf, if you played on April Fool's Day, you had to genuinely know the villagers as people, as individuals, to correctly guess who was the real one when Blanca entered their homes and disguised herself as them.

When I attempted anything I always felt it was not good enough and I would actually get upset and depressed about it and it made my enjoyment of the game dip. I know it should not have let it bother me, but unfortunately it did.

Fans like me who played previous entries weren’t upset at New Horizons because it wasn’t like the past games, but rather because there was objectively less to do. It’s not only about bringing back features from New Leaf that were included at launch but weren’t in New Horizons. Not only did they fail to do that, but they ALSO failed to bring anything new to the table except for terraforming (and godforsaken crafting which being honest, is a complete waste of time meant to pad out gameplay). It’s not an Animal Crossing game because it’s not a life simulator. It’s a design-an-island simulator, with nothing else to do once you’ve finished the design you wanted for your island. They focus so hard on the designing elements of the game that everything else got left behind, including the essence of what makes Animal Crossing, Animal Crossing. I understand COVID-19 made things more difficult for dev teams, and definitely has a part to play in how lackluster and few updates were, but that’s not an excuse for the core issues of the game.

I'm no game developer but I can't imagine it would take up too many resources to add some new items every now and then. Maybe some different things to do on the holidays. I'm not talking a whole rework of each event, but throw us a bone every once in a while to show they are still paying attention to the fanbase. It just seems like they dropped the whole thing.

Idk why they ceased updates as soon as they did, considering the crazy sales it had. Even if it's paid updates, it's better than abandoning the game all together. My biggest gripe isn't the shallowest of the series villagers, huge lack of Nintendo items/villagers versus NL or less nook store upgrades. It's a lot of the cool main street like areas at Harv's island only being accessible by yourself and no multiplayer mini games. It makes New Horizons too single player focused compared to New Leaf. NL simply has much more to see and do with other people.

Let me make it clear that I was an essential worker and so I never got to stay home I also hate being near people so being indoors or away from people was my favorite part of COVID. (I miss places not being so crowded) Now my biggest issue with New Horizons was that the villagers are so repetitive and boring, in New Leaf I actually wanted to talk to my villagers in New Horizons I find it a chore. I also miss the public works projects and being able to remodel the town hall. I miss the multiplayer mini games, I used to play with my siblings but now there’s no multiplayer. Theres a lot of my favorite furniture that’s missing and the fact that the updates were just the whole game. I think the interview that mentioned the game having "new things to find/do for the next 3 years" or whatever it was at the very start, only to have a slow drip feed on the year of release and then barely anything until 2.0 a year later and to be told that was it made many feel like we were given misleading information (not a scam persay, but the flase expecatations many felt did hit many harder than others.) My biggest annoyance was that there were no Zelda crossover items/villagers for the anniversary like they did with Mario. (Why no Master Sword for my Island Nintendo?)
I do think if there is a switch upgrade which allows optimization and backwards compatibility, ACNH could have a deluxe release with new furniture and features from pocket camp/older games that could be highly profitable for Nintendo, a la MK8D. Now if that is what players would want over a brand new title, that's the question.

Animal Crossing New Horizons is a good game, but it is not a good Animal Crossing game.
It lacks the heart and soul of the previous games. The only reason the franchise exists is because the creator wanted a way for Japanese people to escape the hustle and bustle of their culture, where there was always an immediate objective to attain. He wanted to create a game in which you could relax and slow down.
He also wanted to alleviate people's loneliness.
ACNH fails at accomplishing these two things as well as earlier installments do by trying to appeal to everyone. Animal crossing is a niche game. It's not supposed to be everyone's cup of tea. A better drink to compare it to is wine. It's an acquired taste that not everyone will come to enjoy.
It was originally meant to be taken very slowly and meant to be tedious and menial and not convenient. New Horizons is too convenient.
The latest game had a much stronger emphasis on decorating than immersion. And while decor and style were always important to the series, the core element of it as a life sim unique from other sims has been the immersion. This is why most Animal Crossing players (according to survey's) don't time travel. I'm not saying New Horizons players time travel more, I'm just making a point of how important immersion is to AC.
This is also why making your player a god who has complete control over the entire map(including exactly where villagers live and what they're homes are going to look like as well as whether or not they'll be moving from your island) doesn't appeal to a lot of AC fans who have been with the series a long time. You are not god, you're just a citizen making his/her way in a small town. New Horizons gives the player too much control(and with out even really earning it no less).
Even in New Leaf, where the player was the mayor, they still didn't have as much control. They weren't above everyone else. In New Horizons you're playing with dolls and telling them what to do and the animals hardly ever treat you rudely. They are all yes men. In older games you were part of the community. Which helped alleviate loneliness and improved immersion.
And don't get me started on ACNH terrible dialogue. The most important immersion related aspect is the villagers. And they are inane and boring now unfortunately.
The game focuses too much on objectives and having everything on your island be "aesthetic" more than cutting you loose and doing your own thing.

The update thing was new, and weird, but I think that because of the panorama, we all kinda rushed thru the game way faster than anyone woulda expected us to had the world run normally. And because everyone was so focused on looking into the data to see what was coming, people focused more on what wasn't there that they wanted than what we already had.
I really liked acnh, even with the update schedule. Mainly cuz I didn't care about reading into data mines to see what was coming eventually, and also cuz I had a couple other games I cycled thru with acnh to fight the boredom. But I think because I was more focused on working with what I had, rather than comparing acnh to other games and complaining that this and that isn't available, it was more enjoyable. If I could've asked for any new feature, I'd have liked to turn off the rare bugs, or at least the scorpions/tarantulas. I don't know if I could call it a phobia, but that's prolly what I got. Either way, I still found my way to enjoy this game despite that. I didn't mind the building and how slow it was, it kinda went with the real-time feel of the game.
I dunno, thats just my experience... maybe it was a mindset thing

The other problem is that people speedrun this game and get terraforming within a week after starting a new island and get bored of it weeks later. This game is a life simulator game - meant to be played for several minutes a day, not to be played like a normal video game.
Some of us also bought several Nintendo Switches and got burned out that way because we're going from one island to another several times a day, sometimes doing the same things on five islands.

Yeah that's what it feels like. They either time traveled, grew up with other animal crossing games or aren't into decorating games. As for me, I only played Pocket camp first and then new horizons before new leaf. And it may just be me but new leaf feels more crueler and harder than new leaf. And the only reason why I'm still playing it is because I know if I don't, everyone will leave and then random villagers will take their place and ruin all the rare fruit or flowers that I spent so much time on. It feels like a chore so I'm so confused why people praise it.

One thing I do think is new horizons is still a really good game even though I think new leaf is better game too. There is a few things I dislike about new horizons. I wish we could have a dragon musame instead of dinosaurs to change it from new leaf and I wish we had a butterfly house where you can raise butterflies then release them during spring and summer. Then instead of diving and catching fish we could have dive and take photos of fish and sea creatures and have a photo gallery in blathers museum and he can tell you about everything. Then catching fish and catching bugs is still optional where you can perticpate in bug and fish contest still. I love the art gallery but wish it was a little bigger and had more famous art.

I feel like the biggest problem about this is the fact that NH is such a departure from the previous games in both its priorities and the genre that it’s caused a split between the og Life Sim crowd and the newer Decorating Sim crowd. I don’t have New Horizons (would like to try it, but $60.00 is a lot for a video game :’) ) but from what I’ve seen from both sides, the game tries to be both types of simulators at the same time and fails to do it well. There’s limitations on the decorating aspect that make it tedious and a little unlike typical other decorating sims; there’s limitations/downgrades on the living life aspect that makes it feel less immersive and way more superficial than the previous games.
Basically, I think this is why the tweet shown in the video is causing such diverse opinions about New Horizons: the game brought over two different crowds that have different takes on the core and small problems with the game and what their ideal Animal Crossing game would be that they fully agree with the other about it. Like before, it was largely just the Life Sim crowd prior to NH so the lacking Life Sim aspects and previous games’ features would be very important to the longtime fans of the series. The folks who first got into NH would not only not know about this, but especially those in the decorating crowd would not like the weird limitations and quirks that the game has on crafting/decorating/terraforming for the player and wouldn’t necessarily enjoy the previous games either. Even though there’s problems that both sides can agree on, the severity and number of problems definitely depends on which type of sim you play New Horizons and Animal Crossing in general for, to the point where it can easily make or break your enjoyment of the game.
(Also if anyone is curious, my ideal Animal Crossing game would have a better balance of both sims with an in between of GameCube and Wild World villagers, more features from all 5 games and and more stuff/story to explore. I’m more of the Life Sim crowd because I don’t care that much about creating the most aesthetic town (outside of the fact that putting items outside of your house is really cool) and I do love talking to the villagers, but the balance of both would make this hypothetical game great for a lot more people when done right).

I will call it a scam, the game was delayed and had 2 years to surpass New Leaf in term of contents and failled miserably. I just cannot forgive how this game was treated, it had potential and it was ruined. I dont hate it, Im just so disappointed in this game and just sad how its just popular because of the popularity of the Switch and the pandemic... Heck even the mobile game is treated better than this game like why?! Also many "new things" from these updates were just pointless or returning from New Leaf, like just give me New Leaf HD with placeable furniture instead. Would had been way much happier with that...

@Patchuiko The reason I'd call it a scam is because they knew what the fans expected from the previous games but released it without basic features that were in the series since the beginning. And after over a year there was still only one shop upgrade and no shops for the NPCs on Harv's island. It just feels so lazy like they saw they'd gotten their money, threw us some bones and left it in the dirt. Bleh

I think yes, a lot of companies are in the nasty habit these days of knowingly releasing games unfinished, and patching their way to a finished game over time (I understand the strategy for early access indie games, but AAA studios don't need to be doing that). Except I don't think NH was ever finished. It has a lot to offer in terms of decorating, but what else? It felt so much more like a collect-a-thon than any other animal crossing game. Catch all the bugs? Get a decoration. Catch all the fish? Get a decoration. Even during holidays, find the holiday material, craft it into a holiday decoration. All activities in this game amount to collect mats, turn mats into decorations.
There are hundreds of pieces of furniture and decorations, but a lot of furniture staples never made it to NH, which I believe is fine but others may find dissatisfying.
The game just doesn't offer a lot to do outside of becoming a decorator. If you like AC games but don't enjoy the building/decorating aspects of games, you'll be stuck with less to do. No Island minigames, no built-in multiplayer minigames, barely any minigame interaction with villagers. I got maybe two minigames to play with my villagers in my 800+ hours.
Speaking of villagers, they feel like they have much less dialogue and personality in NH, there's a huge pool of villagers available in this game, but they all feel very copy/paste. If you have two of the same villager personality on your island (inevitable with the maximum amount of residents you can have), because of the lack of dialogue, they will start to feel very samey after only a short while.
I could rant forever but I think it's so disappointing because the aspects of NH that are good are AMAZING. The visuals are stunning, animations beautiful, this is the most customizable AC title to date. It could've been perfect, but it's just missing so much content and substance.
*I forgot to mention, even the DLC, which had the opportunity to add new gameplay to the already customization/decoration heavy game, added a whole campaign where the main gameplay is customizing and decorating. Like we get it, the decorating in this game is amazing! But, does it have to be ALL the game offers to do?

(Also the star fragment trees were so cool and they never made that into a thing, literally was already coded into the game, and they were like nah don't want this one time tree that can't regrow these stars to be in the game.)

New Horizons isn't a bad game but it isn't a great Animal Crossing game, too many features are missing and the new features don't really make up for them, like no customizing or selling furnitures, the lack of shops, villagers feeling like robots who are always nice, no quality of life updates, no real occupations other than gardening & fishing (I guess happy home paradise is a decent occupation). I just think they could have done so much more with NH other than letting players craft their own islands but they didn't because they already sold 40 million copies.

I never played New Leaf, so I don't super care about those differences. imo the biggest scam of New Horizons is that all the tools have finite durability, it's just inconvenient and annoying to have to constantly buy/craft new tools when we never had to worry about that before(besides axes which at least gave a visual indicator when they were gonna break). I could deal with those wooden tools being limited but once I can pay thousands of bells for one tool that should be able to last forever. If I wanna buy a starnet let me keep my starnet. And yeah the villagers could be better, that is the biggest thing that could add to longevity. Wild World is a very lacking game feature wise relative to New Horizons, but I never get bored of talking to my villagers and that really would make a difference.

Honestly if you compared New Leaf to New Horizons. It is a scam. How is it a 3DS game has more content and features than new Horizons which was on Nintendo Switch?? They have 2 years to add updates to the game. They just call it quits after the happy home paradise
Why? We don't have upgraded shops, we still don't have the Gracie Grace furniture line set. We were suppose to have Legend of Zelda, Monster Hunter, Splatoon villagers. We don't have a police station or tortimer island mini games. We don't even have a mini game in form of a furniture item (Remember the survival island mini game from the wii u furniture item in new leaf?) Where the heck is Club Lol at???? Dr. Shrunk is the soul of Saturday Night live in Animal Crossing with K.K Slider. Without Dr. Shrunk, K.k. Slider doing solo is just weird.
We're also missing the Happy Home Acre from New Leaf run by Digby. Whenever we street pass folks, or meet them online, we can order furniture from their houses.
Dream Suite was suppose to be its own standalone building, just like the cafe. everything about New Horizons is all wrong, except for the designing.

This game disappointed me to the point where I went back to the Gamecube and 3DS game line. I haven't touched it in over 2 years now. I really wanted to like it, but the slow updates and seeing Pocket Camp continuously getting amazing content updates...really pissed me off? Also, the villagers not having any personality whatsoever. They let this game burn and die.
They had the Island, but Happy Home Designer already existed alongside New Leaf. To me, this felt like a scam to get a quick buck in, just like the WII U Animal Crossing game they released. I mean, look at the state of the game now. What updates is it getting? You can't time skip to holidays still, there aren't any mini-games or anything to do with friends, the game is an empty shell of a franchise. With a hollow world and even more hollow characters.

Having played AC since Wild World I think the new generation of AC players want more. There have been issues in every single AC game, that I feel as an older player Nintendo haven’t addressed. I am in the camp that believes this game was never meant for the switch. It was designed for the Wii U. Covid hit, and most people were at home with time to spare. A game that is designed to be played for a couple of hours a day was being played for hours. Nintendo, like the rest of the world was not expecting a pandemic. People were sprinting through a game that would usually take months.
All the games had issues, and, I think as long Nintendo work on these for the next game we could be looking at something amazing!!

  • @neheobthe1st
    @neheobthe1st ปีที่แล้ว +3

Excusing the state or quality of a game when you hold it independently from its series seems like a preetty big cop-out to me. That's like saying Metroid Other M is a great game - just stop thinking about it as a Metroid game. While it might be true that NH would have been a monumental brand new sim if it wasn't AC - It's literally not a brand new life sim. it's an AC game made by devs with decades of experience and understanding of the genre, all with the game having the massive boons of the brand, characters and status as one of Nintendo's most cared for titles
I played New Leaf on release & basically didn't put it down for 3 or so months - and when I came back after some time, I still had hundreds of hours of *actual* content to be playing through. Animal Crossing as a series has always largely been "Do it yourself", But NH took that to insane levels. NH after 2 years of updates is only just approaching the amount of *gameplay* options (no, I'm not talking about more ways to design or mould your island/house) New Leaf had at launch - not including the Amiibo update
If you were a fan that had waited over 7 years to experience the next instalment of AC, but were more into the life sim than the design sim, you were essentially just given the biggest middle finger by NH, and your options were, as you put it, to "Just go play New Leaf". The balance between these two major aspects that are what make AC the experience that it is, simply isn't here.
Suggesting that "villager hunting" is an alternative to actual, built in minigames is a weird take tbh. The whole idea of villager hunting fundamentally serves to enable that soulless dollhouse vibe that so many people complain about in NH. Why on earth does it matter if the villagers are boring to you if they are just there to sit on your island and look like a pretty exhibit? Villagers in NH don't even simulate "people" or "neighbours" in any meaningful way anymore - they are literally your props to do with as you please, that can't even so much as leave without your consent
Trying to say that AC games can't be compared to each other in a linear way because they are entirely different games is not conducive to the growth of the series in a positive way. The only reason why NL was so much better than CF was because of the player feedback & Criticism it got. This helped shape the game into an overall far superior game to CF in almost every way. If we now pretend NH is its own thing entirely and shouldn't even be compared to other games in the series in a straightforward way, you end up with Nintendo getting the impression that "this but again" is exactly what you want. Inversely, I guarantee you that if the next AC game to come out were to flip itself over and become 80% life sim & 20% design sim, people arguing to leave NH alone will suddenly begin criticising this next game in comparison to others in the series.
Is NH a scam? No. to be blunt, that's a stupid take. The game is the most visually pleasing AC has ever been; it's honestly a miracle it even runs on a switch. I thoroughly enjoyed many aspects of NH & played this game for well over 700 hours from start to present, but being able to see the faults with things you like or care about and having the ability to be critical when it counts is the only way things improve. The successor to something imo should be an evolution, not a completely different beast entirely. I don't think anyone would be overly pleased if Mario Kart 9 was just Forza but with Nintendo characters lol

I used to play a mobile game that was really fun and did it daily. Then it became more of a pay to win type of game. They had a cooking event and you could easily win with 85% pass rate. After a while.... it felt like they changed it. Now it had to be 100% or you would fail it. And around this point.... They added game packs... They also made changes that alot of players made. I miss my character but, the game isn't what it used to be.

And I'm so glad someone said that about new leaf. So many people talk about how amazing new leaf is and how new horizons is trash. But new leaf feels super hard and unfair compared to new horizons. Like in my game a villager moved on my perfect pear trees (new horizons let us choose so we didn't have to worry about loosing any rare trees/ plants) coco moved without me knowing (it maybe more realistic but it's not relaxing, knowing that if I don't play a day, everything I worked hard on could be ruined over night)
And I don't even bother with the mini games that much as I've gotten everything from them that was possible to take home. And I even made 3 more players so maybe I don't get bored but I'm kinda feeling burned out but the fear of a villager leaving or a perfect pear I started to grow will be gone because someone randomly moved on it keeps me playing it daily. It feels more like a chore than a relaxing game at this point.

As someone who, when I picked up NH in 2021, hadn't played a mainline AC game since Wild World (I had played a bit of Pocket Camp, but still), NH was a huge improvement in my eyes. I played WW as a kid so I don't think I had many complaints about it at the time, but it was still huge seeing how far the series had come since I'd last visited it. I was a bit sad about no Brewster, because despite most of my WW memories being pretty vague, I do distinctly remember that I loved going to get coffee at the Roost- I was like 6-7 and wasn't allowed to drink coffee so it made me feel like a grown-up- so that was probably my only real disappointment, but one I could live with. And then we got him back last year anyway, so you can say I was stoked.
I haven't played much of ACNH lately (not entirely on account of finally getting to play TOTK, but it sure helped), but I do still love the game. After playing NL for a time though I can see where some people are coming from, and even agree to a point. I now understand why everyone wants NL on the Switch- frankly I'm waiting for the WW port myself /j

I think the major reason for New Horizons' downfall was just updates in general. Updates aren't a bad thing but the common trend of releasing an unfinished game and finishing it through updates is not the way to make an amazing game. As many have already said, 2.0 should've been New Horizons at launch which I think would've at least made it not have been criticized as harshly since there’s not many players who stayed from release till today. Although New Horizons imo is better than New Leaf, I do have some gripes about it compared to New Leaf and some things I dont think New leaf does any better in (Villagers included). Hope the next animal crossing game can release similar to New leaf's fashion where its complete and we dont have to wait for everything.

  • @rhpiggy123
    @rhpiggy123 ปีที่แล้ว +5

It feels like a scam mainly in the way Nintendo slowly drip fed us weak updates and then decided that's it. Even the final product now just feels lacking. The whole business model for it was flawed (the only update of worth was one you had to pay for unsurprisingly, the others just felt like Nintendo doing the bare minimum and the players felt that). I also think (iirc) Nintendo pulling most of the AC team over to help Splatoon 3 get out of the door messed up the quality of AC updates and caused a premature end to AC.
As long as Nintendo can see past the sales figures and realise what came out was critically underwhelming and disappointing for a lot of people then maybe the next AC will work as people are going to more cautious next time round.

People always talk about how boring the villagers are, and I can absolutely see why, but I just wanted to shed some light on the other side of the argument. As someone who also grew up on Animal Crossing, I really appreciated not having 40% of the population constantly yelling at me. At the beginning of release, there was very little dialogue so the villagers were easy to get tired of, but I kinda thought this was because Nintendo had spent time giving them new actions. Little things like singing, dancing, or running around made them ACT much more alive in my opinion. The villagers are so cute now that playing is a free source of serotonin. Back in City Folk, my villager best friend used to gossip about me behind my back and yell at me for not doing things that weren’t mechanics in the game. I would MUCH rather have villagers who run and sing without a care in the world.

Thank you! This is why I'll never play the og game. I'm not gonna befriend someone who's rude to me. I would actively avoid them. I thought NL handled them well. They didn't yell at you but there was still a little sass.

Ok, I was on your side until you brought S/V into it.
    TL:DR
Nintendo is scum, not a scam. In everything they do.
ACNH isn't a scam cause they "drip fed" us old content, the community ruined it for themselves by playing 100+hrs in the first week. And also comparing it constantly to older games, where this definitely played more towards a newer player base with the older base in mind as well. (Along with covid production issues that could have enhanced what we got)
And while S/V has its frame issues, I'll say it's on par for, if not ahead of, Sw/Sh for playtime and enjoyment for me.
Shitty frames don't mean it's a scam or bad game.
A scam is showing and not delivering, where both games were shown in good light obv, but some things weren't as good as they should have been.

Their games are/can be amazing. But they're not above overpricing accessories or extras lol
I'm not here to defend Nintendo, I just appreciate their works, when they can be appreciated

It's quite poignant you showed Genshin Impact as an example of a drip-feed game because it shows really well what New Horizons could have been with monthly updates bringing people back. The first year should have brought back things from the older games (that fit the NH theme) and then after that for at least 1-2 years we should have been getting monthly updates with one big update in March for the anniversary of the game. Genshin Impact, in a similar way, releases who entire expansion-sized regions every summer.
The reason why people say New Horizons was a scam was because Nintendo used our knowledge of today's gaming scene against us. When they said they would be updating the game frequently with new things most would immediately think to Genshin Impact, Fortnite, CoD, and other 'live-service' games that go on for years.
We got one major new feature in an update right alongside being told that it's over, game's dead. The DLC was so lackluster and did nothing to address the numerous issues:
    - crafting more than 1 fish bait
    - further customization of the island (change the airport color, bridge and incline colors)
    - changing the location of resident services
    - villager interactions being lackluster
    - airport dialogue
    - no second upgrade to the Cranny
    - numerous quality of life updates
    - more than island on one Switch
    - interior rooms can't be made bigger (even with DLC) in our house
Then it goes further to these small nitpicks but for me the inability to connect inclines and paths is a crazy oversight. I can connect them to bridges. The custom paths we can use make no sound (how hard is it to allow us to choose what sound it should make).
I will stand by the fact that if any other company did the things Nintendo routinely does with their franchises, they'd get eaten alive. Can you imagine EA making a game like this?
We were promised, marketed to this new next-gen game and instead we got the Animal Crossing equivalent of The Sims 4... and I love The Sims 4 but COME ON.

Honestly if ACNH had more updates like NMS or stardew did in bigger chunks of content then it wouldnt be so bad
Then they just stopped making new updates and the game kinda became a distant memory for most
Was a good game but oh if they actually put out several QoL updates and made updates chunkier it wouldve been a great game
Ah well i def had fun with friends, too bad it takes a million years to load into another players game and no one can do anything during that time

I may not like New Horizons all that much, but I'd never call the game a scam. For me, it was a mediocre entry. It'd have to have been truly terrible at launch, like even fewer features at base and huge gaps of no updates, to be considered a scam.
For a game to be a scam, it'd have to be $70, be 4 hours long, have no replay value, somehow have microtransactions, etc. The only game on the Switch I may consider a scam would be Link's Awakening, and even then, it's because the game is short and fairly mediocre. But it was a birthday gift, so it's not like I got scammed anyway. Plus, it had some positive qualities, so it wasn't all bad.

Best AC ever... at least once 2.0 dropped. I hate drip-fed content, and it was made much worse by Covid, but objectively, I think the "complete" ACNH experience is as good as it gets. My first AC was on the GameCube and I've played every entry since, including the Japan-only releases, and 2.0 NH is just fantastic.
Not perfect, as noted by villager dialogue or the clunky UI (I'd love one last QoL update more than new content, honestly), but easily the best AC we've seen.

Really great takes. I don’t know if I’d use the term “scam”. It’s a decent title. That said, I think for me it’s the weakest in the over all series. I was really looking forward to having a console entry and it seemed gimped compared to the last entry’s. Even the hand held titles. Again, I don’t think it’s a bad game, the series had kind of changed some little things for the worse since the beginning. In the first game, we were able to kick a ball around. So it’s a small detail, but now all we can do is place a ball down and “bounce” it in place. Stuff like that. Look at it like a band. You don’t have to like every album released. And it doesn’t make you any less of a fan if you don’t.

The biggest issue is that for:
1.- The update timming was terrible cuz from library week till 2.0 there was period of utter nothingness that was suuuuch a stinker
(As a guy who for reasons couldnt play until 2.0, i wasnt as afected, tho others....)
2.- This game DISCOURAGES binge playthroughs, as this was THE most burnout inducing game of the series the complete opposite of new leaf...
3.-A constant BUT slow and steady focus mindset was necesary to avoid any frustrations
4-Comparisions to pocket camp on the accessories and furniture topics (awkward considering that even on 1.0 this game had a lot of stuff if compared to other games not named NL)
    5.-THE PANDEMIC
Extra: and this feel felt more topical with jaden's and other videos from content creators.
It just felt like the perfect storm of unpleasantness and alongside many of the online fiascos being more vocal due to social media
My silly golden nugget of knowledge
Take care of all Kora we do care for ya!

New Horizons is my first AC game. I didn't have the luxury of getting Nintendo consoles when I was a kid until I first bought myself the Switch with my own money. I did know about the franchise since Wild World and was also excited to watch gameplay videos all the way until New Leaf. But I loved NH to its core and it's kinda unfair to see that people compare it a lot to the previous titles as someone who just actually got into the franchise (which totally isn't wrong), though it does feel like we did miss out on experiencing the game's full potential. Though I agree that the next title should have new and improved features that aren't in NH currently, I'd say this is the fullest potential that I've personally experienced.

This game helped me get through the pandemic, so I'd say it's worth it. But when things went back to normal postpandemic, plus me working a job, I did get bored of ACNH for a while, and stopped playing games for a while as well. Life got pretty busy.

ACNH was my first ac and i spent a whopping 1,300+ hours in it, got two islands in different consoles and boy shall i say, its one heck of a charming game, i left it for about a year or so because, burnout obviously, i even played dreamlight valley cause i heard people say it solves problems we have in acnh, i enjoyed it yeah but its noting like acnh, it charming, pretty and relaxing, sometimes stressful too, does it have flaws? hell yeah but its still fun asf and its one of a kind game that gives you one of a kind feeling and i would def. recommend it to literally everyone

As someone who is not a gamer and hasn’t picked up a game controller since SNES was a thing (early ‘90s), I only found ACNH in the summer of 2021. I find it a delightful game and when I tried to play the other variations, I found I didn’t like them. Basically, like you said, if you prefer any of the animal crossing iterations , play that game. As for me, I’ll continue to play catch up on my Switch Lite with my beloved ACNH. 🥰

I do compare new leaf and new horizons with each other but I wouldn't call it a scam, it's just disappointing but I got two additional switches to create more islands because I do love the decorating aspect which is new horizons main focus. I have well over 2k hours in BOTH games, I got my money and time worth it and I'm happy. I just would not really recommend this to players that don't like decorating bc if you're going to play it like new leaf/cityfolk/wild world to unlock things and bond with villagers, it's not really good for it. However, I will be bitter if the next main game doesn't have landscape/decorating outside LMAO. They could have just done better with new horizons but bad timing with the pandemic, it was still game of the year but it did start falling off early 2021 and even when the dlc released, it didn't exactly cure the burnout either.
One major complaint I have with the developers is that for old players, all the updates were pretty much old content and the developers ended the updates within a year when they promised at least 2 years. They moved to work on Splatoon 3 which that game I would call it a scam. I have the oled and only 170 hours which makes me sad compared to 2000 in Splatoon 2. The updates they're doing to Splatoon 3 is not good either. All the fun modes are just limited or they somehow ruin it. Both games have not been done well and just yikes when the dev team went from Acnh to Splat3 and both of them have issues and complaints, and gets bad talked on.

In my country the game is too expensive, almost a month's minimum wage of work. From what i >seen< it really shouldnt cost so much, New Leaf has pretty much more content and its WAY cheaper than New Horizons. I personally would say its not a scam, if the price were lower, but rn, it is.

NH is lacking in a lot of ways, but at the same time people are much too hard on it. Every AC game in the series has had its flaws. You gain some and lose some with every installment. I hope the next game will be a perfect combination of NH and NL, but even then we'd be left with the neutered villagers.
