Will it start?? Huge machine pulled from the Boneyard!

  • This Cat 16H grader was owned by a large mining company when a little over a decade ago it was pulled from service, drained of all its fluids, and abandoned in their boneyard for unknown reasons. But recently my buddy Quinton with Iron King Inc bought to use as a parts machine and had it hauled back to his shop. Before dismantling it we thought it would be fun to see if we could get the Caterpillar 3406C engine to fire up. We disconnected all the drivetrain and hydraulic components, went through the fluids, connected enough wiring to run the engine, end sent some power to the starter to see what would happen!

    We need to hear that 12v92 roar! Also, a CO2 Extinguisher is great for runaways, just point the nozzle at the intake and the engine will stop as it displaces the oxygen and does no damage. Saves having rags and boards getting sucked in.

    • @hanssundkvist
      @hanssundkvist ปีที่แล้ว +9

    • @henkoosterhof5947
      @henkoosterhof5947 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Beinlausen depends of the air intake!
      How much air goes in and how much co2 gets in. If you dont replace all the oxygen with co2 the engine wont stop. Whit a plate blocking of oxygen it will.

    • @beinlausen
      @beinlausen ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@henkoosterhof5947 Fire departments usually carry CO2 extinguishers for this. And with plates you can only really directly kill the engine with a perfect seal around the turbo. if the engine revs high enough it will collapse the intake pipes and suck air from wherever it can. Then a co2 works better to snuff it out.

    • @rodneymandery6087
      @rodneymandery6087 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Absolutely. We carried CO 2 extinguishers not for fire but to shut down our diesel engines if we entered a flammable gas leak area.

    Casey, it was nice to see/hear some of this stuff again. I worked in the Cat plant in Aurora, Il. where the 992's where built. In fact, on worked on that line. That line also built the 988's. I believe the graders were built in Decater IL. I moved to the Pontiac, Il plant, where we made the fuel systems for a lot of the engines. I also worked on the lines that made the fuel systems/injectors for the 3406 and 3500 engines. Pontiac took pride in making some of the best injectors/fuel systems out there.

    • @timothygeiger8271
      @timothygeiger8271 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When did you work at the Aurora plant, & what area?
      I used to haul parts & equipment into that plant often.
      I also had to haul overhead cranes into the plant as well.

    • @scottka
      @scottka ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@timothygeiger8271 1978 to 1982, got hit by those big layoffs in the 80's. That's why I ended up in the Pontiac Plant until I retired. I work for a brief time in building G on the paint line,"fun". Then moved to building H on the 992/988 line (worked on the front of the line.) At Aurora, I was in Materials and resupplied the line. Those overhead cranes were huge, some were even remotely controlled. It was surreal watching entire machines moving in the air.

    Casey, you made a comment about the video "shake hands with danger" during this video. It inspired me to watch it and it scared the bejeebers out of me with it's dramatic depictions. Regardless of it being an ancient film, that should be compulsory viewing for anyone on or even with any form of machinery before they are allowed to use it.

    Back in the late 1990's I was working for a trucking heavy equipment rental business we had many military surplus pieces of equipment, as the welder. We had surplused hull plates. I beams. One day the boss ask if I could build a heavy steel table to repair hydraulic cylinders. The legs were of 1" thick 8" I-beams. The table 1/2"x 6'x10 hull plates 1/4" x 3' flat bar made the sides. Where the rachet straps hooked a 1/2" pipe nipple a ball cock for draining the oil. For small cylinders a pipe vice mounted on an additional piece of the 8" l beam welded to a rear leg. After the build was finished that table earned $10,000 in the first 30 days. I was cutting wrenches out of plate steel to remove the larger nuts. The largest cylinder rebuild was for a 40-ton heister forklift that was designed to stack 40' shipping containers 5 high. 4 stages in the cylinder.

    Engines in the oil fields have an inlet shutoff valve that will block the air inlet as close to the inlet as they can get it. This is so if there is a natural gas leak they can shut the engine down even in an emergency.

Those old 2 stroke, 4 valve, roots blower engines are awesome and I'd bet any money that, as long as the racks aren't stuck, she'll fire right up! I used to work on a set of 6-71 TAs in a sportfishing boat and I absolutely LOVED them. The slight idle roll used to lull me to sleep! I miss just sitting between them and listening to them chatter away.
    That CAT sounded mighty healthy. I know Quinton wants to do right by his customers and I appreciate that very much, but he might get some good spare parts out of that motor when he rebuilds it. Just judging by the oil pressure and the smoke out the stack and hearing it run, it's fine the way it is. Probably get 10K hours out of it just as it sits.

    Casey the roll back wireless is the greatest thing ever gives a one man truck the ability to be at the right place while winching well worth the money

    After the build-up, I had to find and watch Shake Hands with Danger. It's a cheesy 80's video full of knowledge! Thanks for mentioning it! I definitely laughed and learned!

    I had a 3406C in my Pete 379. That motor was AMAZING, however. I did have it decide to spin backwards while I was driving it slowly I was slowing down and down shifting and suddenly it went backwards so I had one forward gear and a bunch of reverse gears. It shut it down, refired it and it was fine. We also have a 1969 D8H and that ole girl is a WORK HORSE. Those old mechanical cat engines are unbeatable in my opinion!

    Just make sure to pull the valve covers and check that the injector rack is free on that detroit before trying to start it.

    I think I saw "shake hands with danger" in high school because that's the last time I've heard the name
    I think all heavy equipment was designed by an engineer that worked on equipment before becoming an engineer. I've always said that if engineers worked on the equipment they design the machine would be built differently

    Casey called them super chargers but on a 2 stroke Detroit Diesel they're called blowers and required but the added turbos gives it extra zing..

    My first fuel job was running a Class B Wet Hose Truck, I did fleet fueling and heavy equipment. 1/2 the time the heavy equipment was running as they hated down time. I was shaking hands with danger as I crawled up onto the equipment to various fueling points. Thanks for the lesson and the cheesy video. Praying for no diesel runaway when you start it.

    Thank you for the video and this maybe the best channel out because for one I love all videos about cars/trucks and you don't only do your towing but you do so much acts of kindness and always helping others and bring fun in all jobs that others are doing lol but I really do appreciate the content and I am not the type that has enough to buy things but I do watch every single video and every add yes even the three minutes ones and share to others so that is good enough I hope but please keep making these videos I really do learn several things and I have told my boss at the city impound about the yankem rope's hope I spelled it right but I think them would definitely work lots better but anyways enough of rambling on lol thank you again
