I was going to purchase a Mazda 2, until I drove my mother's 2015 model. It is one of the most uncomfortable cars to sit in, and it had hardly any power. The point at which I decided no, was when I drove her up a hill. She had a really tough time. Ended up spending a few thousand extra and buying a Toyota Corolla. I've never looked back.
Far too much technology for cars just waiting to have a strange problem that costs a wheelbarrow full of money to cure ( what happened to the roof rack and trailer)
The yaris , yawn !, should not be in this contest. The swift 1.0 turbo is more fitting to be compared with the 2. I would pick the swift turbo for its engine and fabulous driving position alone.

There are three different types of Yaris in the world, North American Yaris is a rebadged Mazda 2, The Asian and South American Yaris was designed in South east Asia and is based on The Vios (really ugly looking). the European, Japanese and Oceanic Yaris was designed in Europe and is made for small city roads and back lanes, it’s the Yaris that has the most safety technology and the new one is based on the TNGA plat form. And no the Asian Yaris is not a Lexus as that will be too expensive for the Asian market, the Asian Yaris is a wholly made my Toyota and uses cheaper parts ( believe me as I am Malaysian)

I feel Toyota has lost it in the last few years. There was once a time where if I were to pick a car, I'd go to Toyota no questions asked. But with so much competition now, I'd pick either the Koreans or possibly even Mazda now.
They have different goals. Toyota is significantly larger and has previously always focused on market share, volume and variance. Mazda is a niche brand in Japan. They are more focused on the engineering of late (particularly post Ford departure). Recent models of Toyota's have always done carry over, whereas all Mazda models received complete clean sheet treatment and they haven't gone the route of everyone else. The goal of Skyactiv was fuel economy without sacrificing Mazda's main goal - driving feel. With that in mind they spend well over $2 billion in R&D and sent the company well into debt. It was a gamble that paid off. For transmissions for example, instead of going down the route of CVT (an easy way to get economy with a trade off in feel), they started from scratch and redesigned their auto transmission with some tricks that had never been done before. They same was the case with their engines, chassis - even doing something as simple has studying the art of Samurai sword making to produce the highest tensile steel used in the automotive industry (a record Mazda still holds and has patented), just to save weight. My family in Japan is a Toyota family and back in 2012 when I bought a CX-5 my father in law (Corolla in driveway), laughed at me. A month later, the CX-5 won Japan Car of the year. Three of the last 5 years they have won. Twice come second. In those 5 years only one Japanese model has beaten a Mazda - this year's Impreza just edged out the CX-9. But I feel the CH-R this year finally sees Toyota come back. They have taken a leaf out of Mazda's book concentrating on driving over mass production. Hopefully this will be the start of a resurgence.

2024 and that was an interesting comparrison. With one of our kids about to get their license this comparison has helped. We own a 2017 Yaris XS 1.5 hatch. Yes it does look dated inside compared to the Mazda and it doesn't have the tech. But our Yaris has been amazing - very cheap to keep overall with servicing, fuel and maintenance and excessively reliable and very ezy to drive and park. We got the parking sensors added but we actually turn them off as they are not needed. Rather than hassle we've decided to buy a Mazda 2 with low klms and we'll just fight over who drives what.
I could have sworn that I heard the Yaris is being built by Mazda for Toyota?? Or do Mazda just design them together?? So the Mazda 2 and the Yaris are basically the same car, except for trim and a few options? I cant seem to find a review of the US versions of these cars. I had a new mazda 2 and i got rid of it with in a year it was a lemon it was always at the mechanic shop getting fixed plus mazda didnt want to know about it and said nothing was wrong with it i had proof from the mechanics on paper id go the yaris all the way less stuff to go wrong

4 speed auto still? Jesus. I bought a Yaris in 2007 (now sold) which came with the 4 speed auto option. Looks like they haven't done anything about it. Quite impressed that the Mazda comes with a HUD. A lot of cars between 50-100k don't have HUD.
I think you could have mentioned the trim levels of the two cars as well. Because a few of the features that you said about Mazda 2 are available only in the Genki trim level.
This review is subjective. The 1.5 l AT petrol ar same price on both sides, but as soon you choose different motor or trim level the prices change - Toyota being cheaper. So it depends how much you want to spend for the compact hatch initially and long term in reliability.
Doing 6,4 liters with a yaris? I got the old yaris and im averaging 5,4-5,5 liters. While doing normal speed + highway.. If you need that much fuel in a even newer Yaris, you are doing something terribly wrong..

They both have weak frontal crash against larger vehicles such as amarok ranger hilux and triton as well as semi trucks. They could decapitate your legs. This is why i have favoritism on large family offroad suvs

Both are crap, Mazda has excessive road noise, horrible paint job, horrible motor, tinny and a useless A/C, yarris has loud road noise, cheap and nasty interior, gearbox from the 80's, engine equally bad as the mazda. Skoda Fabia is miles ahead of these two, Direct injected turbocharged motor providing peak torque at 1500RPM, quieter on the road, revised DQ200 DSG, better interior quality, better road feel.

+Denver Cayle Ong The two mazda 2s I have been in one new and the other previous generation have both had horrible AC, the worse I have ever encountered, my mum has a 323 horrible as well, been in a Mazda 3 and it also had horrible AC, looks are subjective, I personally hate Mazda's design language, the motor in the Fabia and pretty much all VW DIG motors can easily get another 20% power from a simple remap that takes 5 minutes, you can put E10 also in the Fabia which is cheaper than 91. Skoda is one of the best selling cars in Europe, no buys Mazda in Europe, they can't even sell them with 10 year warranties, the just rust away within 3 to 5. The fabia still has a far better motor, the mazdas engine prodices peak torque at 4000RPM, the Fabia at 1500RPM. and more torque I might add.
Mazda's Kodo design language still looks absolutely amazing, and i think it will continue to do so.

the Sedan is smaller inside, the rear slopes and gives less rear headroom, i know because my mum has the sedan and I have the hatch.
