Ok, this wasn't stressed in the video. When you land Winston's jump, it cancels the mêlée animation; if you do it right you'll barely see his arm fully extend and you'll maximize you DPS. This gives you an extra damage burst which (almost) breaks through Torb's armor packs. Against a 200 hP character you drop the time to kill from ~3.3 seconds to a little over 2, where if you don't mêlée cancel you have a 2.5 second time to kill. Like to save a Harambe and kill a Hanzo.
PartialPsycho you are right. It cancels the animation. However, it does stop your tesla cannon from shooting for the usual delay. Animation isnt shown but delay is the same. Its only great if you are chasing someone who has less than 100hp and want to finish them. More important is landing directly on them to get the full 50dmg
Landing the jump pack damage cancels any attack you're doing and adds a cooldown before you can attack again whether you are shooting or melee, it's never not a good idea to get a free melee in. You zap something, melee the instant before hitting the ground, and keep shooting. It's always free damage, it doesn't stop you doing anything you couldn't do.
Nevermind i am mistaken i just tested it again myself it does not stop shooting, only other actions such as punching and dropping barrier if it happens to be a good place for it.

Have well over 100 hours on him could be nearly 150 at this point, haven't checked in a while! Was the only person in the top500 to have Winston as the most played or to even have him in the top three characters on the board at the start of the season. (PS4 EU) Though the threshold was highered above my sr and I haven't been as committed this season with the current decay system. Played him into triple tank meta and Bastion meta (which lasted nearly a month on console). Some of my tips; If someone is getting healed by a Mercy just don't bother. If Soldier drops his healing station early in your engagement, don't bother. Although if he is quite low you can melee him for the burst damage to finish him off. Maybe a bit controversial but he is an amazing counter to Reinhardt. Your range is 7m and his is only 5m, not only can you go right through his shield to zap him +2 other team mates you can stay away from Rein's melee. That's why if you have a Rein on your team you'll always win a shield war without even needing to break the enemy's shield! They synergise very nicely. Drop your bubble on the graviton to prevent some outward damage but try to primary fire in. You can use your ultimate to get there quicker if the Zarya possibly panic ulted or saw the opportunity to catch a few but didn't communicate it or if there's not really anyone else to follow up on. Always always melee BEFORE you land as it cancels the animation, doing it after gives a delay in damage output you could be doing. It really makes a difference. Make it muscle memory even if you're just leaping off spawn! If you have used your ult and got someone in a corner, continue to use your leap for the extra damage with the 2 second cooldown. Of course just quick ones that most would know already: -When you're in a 1v1 inside your shield you need to bait them in and then you dance in and out, great way to deal with a Reaper and Hog but the latter is very dangerous. -When reloading, jump straight up in the air, by the time you land you will have a full clip again! -Do not tunnel vision. In a time fight you should be focusing the healers, the quicker they die the whole enemy team crumbles. Remember you can go through shields and stuff so focus the Mercy as much as possible. Winston hasn't got great dps so if you're working on a someone with lots of health but spot someone weak, immediately go for the weakest. Sorry for the long post but I've been playing him from season1 and was kinda happy to hear that he was the least played but with the recent buffs people are finally realising just how powerful he is and I'm chuffed tbh. He's even more fun in quickplay because there's fuck all coordination and the team comps are nearly always squishy, so you can zap everyone super easily and get the tricklers!
My Pro tips: - Jump up when reloading in a duel, then land on your target. Be carefull doing this if you are low health. - Quick Melee to finish a target, you save ammo and time. - Switch over to D.Va instantly if they switches to Bastion! Bastion is Winston's biggest threat. - Don't save your ult for too long. It's a fast charging ult, and it can stall and distract the other team. If they got people at a ledge, pop it instantly and push them off, it is worth it, especially when they got a Mercy. (Mercy can't rez people who fell of the map)
Deadly Dex not really he's easy if u see him coming to beat just pop in and out of your bubble I cancel his ultimate all the time with my bubble just drop it on his head and watch him spin doing no damage.
Oshu Oshua Thats true but without that bubble he is gonna get killed 100% of the time. Every single pellet of each shot will do maximum damage due to his huge hitbox

Yep. SInce the shield deploys fast, you can use it to cancel ultimates too such as earthshatter, deadeye, and visor. Very underrated but insanely effective if you are sleight of hand.
This is by far your best Winston video to date, Winston is my second most played and I have a lot of hours on him but still learned a couple tips. Can tell you worked hard.
Well i mean, CC/Burst Damage is what kills Winston. Get rid of his mobility or disable him before he can get away and he's screwed usually if you have good communication or if you aren't a helpless support. Roadhog and reaper are excellent at countering Winston is since they keep him from harming anybody and entirely take away his fucking life very efficiently.
I main Winston with over 50 hours, and I can happily say I follow almost all of these rules. I learned more about the ult, especially jumping for more damage. Great guide, and great work as always
Some extra winston tips I picked up from a reddit post. Winstons land animation (from using his jump pack) actually resets punch animations. So if you Jump pack > Punch just before landing (so close enough to land the punch still in the air)> land > tesla. That is the fastest DPS possible for winston initiation, as you do 30 + ~50 + tesla, without any delays in starting tesla. If you punch after landing you have to wait for the animation before you can tesla. Secondly, VS armour, its apparently better to punch on cooldown, as punch deals more damage than tesla to armour. Secondly it conserves your ammo, meaning you will get more damage out before needing to reload. For example, vs D.Va you can punch on cooldown until shes out of armour and then tesla the rest.
These are some good tips, but I can't believe you didn't mention the high ground control at all. Miro doesi t all the time: He jumps on high ground and waits for an opening. That way he has more options available: he can bubble, or jump back up or just jump closer to a certain target. That's especially important on defense where your safety has more value then on attack. Also not every map is equally good at this. Great maps are Anubis, Gibraltar, Dorado. The maps with alot of high ground around the objective.
Great guide! To add to your point about Winston's ultimate. In one of my game's the enemy team used a Zarya and Genji ult combo and I used my Winston ult to keep Genji away from my team while they were graviton'd, it worked fairly well to keep the enemy Genji under control. I also like to use Winston to harrass the enemy support! Jump in behind the lines, pick off both supports, win the team fight!
Very good points! Also as an added tip, the main mentality you should have when dropping your bubbles is not to defend your team at its location, but to stop your opponents from their location. Doing so would split the enemy team's ana/hanzo/mcree.
One thing idk if anyone talks about a lot, the fact that Winston's electro-rave-sprinkler of a primary goes thru most shielding/deflecting abilities. Allowing him to apply pressure to certain heroes at times when most can't. Reins and Dvas who aren't thinking often obliviously hold their shielding abilities up in the face of a Winston assault rather than dmging him. Also I can't be the only one who loves shooting something that genji can't just throw right back at you.

I'm loving Winston on defense on payload maps. Kings Row streets is amazing for a defending Winston. It contains many ledges where you can spread damage onto the payload and diving and bubbling the payload in the midst of a team fight can almost guarantee a win as the enemies are momentarily forced away from the payload.

You forgot one use for the bubble, that being creating a zone that your DPS can use to duel things(or the supports even, dueling a McCree as Zen when you can dance around a Winston bubble makes it really easy).
one fun tip is to use the ult to get back to the fight quick. if you respawn and your team could still win the fight, its often worth it to jump, pop ult, and jump again back to the objective. its so quick that you still have time to get a few good swings at the enemy before the ult wears off.
While everyone's talking about Winston: if you didn't know already, you can use him to cross the Volskaya gap. Face the ledge a jump off sideways. Shortly into the fall, you'll be at an angle with the ledge that lets you jump up to it.
I've been learning Winston, he seems to be working really well for me in the "wait and pounce" style. I started playing him almost as I would Reaper. On Defense on like Numbani or Anubis, I wait on the high ground for them to commit to a push, and dive their back line.
Fantastic Guide! Kinda new to Overwatch. Really helped my game. I love Winston! Amazing how many players don't understand him. He's harasser not a tank. He's excellent against snipers, healers and classes that a glass canons. I had a guy playing Bastion screaming at me for not putting my shield up on him.
I've found Winston to be the most intuitive character. You have to learn to survive as him, and be pretty strategic relative to other heroes. A lot of the video felt like stuff that comes naturally after figuring the character out through play.
I think the biggest tip missing from this video is using the jump as a scouting tool, it's great in the middle of a fight to use that way. You just look straight up, jump take a look around below you and find somewhere else to take the fight, usually enemies will lose sight of you, at least on console this works pretty well.
I main Winston, and I really started to practice jump landing+melee alot more, and man that extra damage is crazy. Basically cuts the time it takes to kill a squishy in half
I would prefer a roadhog over a winston as a tracer main. Roadhog isn't a counter against a good tracer, you can feed your ulti so quick. And a good winston won't focus you as a tracer. He will focus your healers and than they beg for help and eventually you can't play your role well.
A full Winston guide... Oh heeeeell yes... I was so bummed when Kaplan said he was the least-played hero of all a few weeks ago, but it just makes me want to play him that much more.
I didn't know about the 'backward mini-jump'. Thank you! It was driving me mad that I could never do an optimal jump when trying to catch up to an enemy that's in this annoying medium-range.
As a Winston main my tips would be: #1 Pounce squishy targets and the back line supports whenever you see them split or leave someone on their own. #2 Use the jump pack as a way to escape from fights and retreat to your healers, not just to engage in battle. #3 Ignore tanks unless they have low health or are the only ones alive, every tank (except sometimes zarya) can beat you in a 1 vs 1 fight, don't risk your life to put in some damage if it wont kill the target. #4 Switch heroes immediately if the enemy team runs at least 2 of your main counters. Any combination of roadhog and/or reaper and/or bastion means you have to pick another hero right away. Often D.Va is a good option. #5 Switch heroes immediately if the enemy team runs 3 tanks. Winston relies on quickly picking off heroes, not something possible against the high health of tanks. #6 You will often find yourself getting very close to getting a kill, but then having to reload and have your target heal up during it. Punch your opponents to finish the kill. #7 Never jump into the middle of the enemy team, unless you have a clear health and player advantage. Approaching the enemies from the front where they see you coming and focus you down before you get any value should be avoided in general. Especially applies for the very first push in king of the hill maps. #8 Always help your team. Winston is one of the most mobile heroes in the game and has an easy time moving from target to target, be aware of your surroundings and if you see a teammate in trouble, jump in and save the day.
2 things you didnt mention: Using your bubble to block wnemy ultimates (pharah, reinhardt, mcree etc) is a brilliant use and can save a game. The same goes with orisa and sym although not really as much. Also your ultimate resets the cooldown for your jetpack when you use it, and after it has finished. This can be great for mobility and a lot of people underestimate it.
These other things work for me I try to use a "If you aren't sure you can get out alive, don't go in" mentality. 1. you can bubble a dropped dva bomb then jump away to safety to reduce (completely negate?) damage to your team. 2. An exception to "don't jump/bubble into a choke": I do if they have a sym. Gives me protection from and while I clear sym turrets. Allows the team to break the choke with some cover as I do so (like all rushing the right corridor to then go upstairs on point 1 Hanamura) 3. If you are in a losing 1v1 battle with no jump available (e.g. reaper turns up) as it's on cooldown, they will impulsively chase you when they smell blood. As you run away drop a bubble, that means they have to run through two shields (each side of the bubble - you will have gone thru their second one by the time they breach the first) which might buy you the extra seconds of cover to come off cooldown/get back to your healer/around a corner into cover. 4. If you can initiate on clean up (e.g. 2 squidgies near each other but away from the group) try to save your jump. If you can initiate by flanking and getting some early surprise damage on both, by going a slightly longer less obvious route or dropping from a platform above, you always have an exit strategy if you kill one but may die to the second if you continue the fight. One dead and you alive is a better trade for your team than you leaping in, killing one and dying as well. You team is now a tank down and they lost only a lower value squidgy. 5. Look up, jump then immediately back down as soon as you have left the ground. Gives more time to see and fine tune your landing. With practice becomes more of a timed flick than two separate directional movements. 6. As you land a jump attack. immediately melee. This cancels the animation and allows you to get your gun firing quicker.
Also, as a long-time Winston main, I have some other tips: - Use ledges and platforms to reach a vantage point. As Winston, you should maximize the damage of the Tesla Cannon by electrocuting the whole team! It also charges your ultimate faster. - Glide on rooftops and slopes to get extra damage and air time. - Don't be afraid to use your Primal Rage. It charges quickly. You can single-handedly stop an enemy team's attack by just killing an enemy and pushing them back. - Use your Shield Bubble to stop Ultimates! You can deny so much damage if you pop it in front or on top of an enemy. Ultimates like Soldier 76's Tactical Visor or Dva's Self Destruct can be completely stopped with this ability. - It's okay if you're not getting kills. As long as you're harassing the enemy, you're doing your job. By harassing, you are taking attention and creating space for your team. You can also cause the enemies to tilt. - If an enemy switches to your counter (Reaper, Roadhog), this is a good thing! This is an extension to my point above^: You are forcing the enemy to focus onto yourself, which is a good thing. Play less aggressive and just annoy the enemy team. That's all I have.
recently soloed from 2800 to 3300 as pretty much only winston. He's kind of like that carry tank that zarya was in season 2 if played right. Seeing people pick him after you've destroyed them on attack then picking them apart as you know how to play him is also incredibly fun.
Another tip for people if you want: Learn how Winston drops the bubble - how it's a little bit in front of him, and how slow it falls. That way you can do awesome things, like drop it off a ledge in front of you to block that high noon, or while doing a jump drop it on a D.Va ultimate and dive onto something at the same time. Again - just something that takes time and practice. But remember, you're playing as a giant science monkey from space - don't get too tilted when you fuck it up each game.

What about countering/limiting Symmetras influence on defense maps? I think that's another important part where Winston can be pretty helpful to have, especially on maps like Eichenwalde 1st (payload-)Point or 1st Point on Hanamura
I have two tips. 1.) When the zarya gravitons, don't ult. You will do more damage with your normal fire. 2.) If you have a reaper and he is ulting, dive onto him and drip your barrier. This will prevent him from getting picked off at range.
I don't know why that short hop trick never occurred to me. I've always had to compensate for how far he jumps and swing around a lot while jumping after people and I can almost never chase down a soldier as I overshoot him too far and he just turns around. My level of menace has gone up drastically with this tidbit.
The rest of this video is standard gamesense but that 1 tip with the mini-jump I never realized. This is a nice dps boost when you are taking out the backline but more so this would be especially good for his ultimate.
Don't forget that you can harass Pharah as Winston as well. He's definitely not a counter to her but he can get to her and do a very fair amount of damage just from jumping past her and keeping your cannon on her. I've polished off a ton of Pharahs who've taken chip damage from a Soldier or McCree but were trying to duck behind cover to heal up. He's a great finisher for her.
When I play rein against a dive comp, I only do so if it is a traditional style dive comp where everyone on the enemy just dives straight in, because instead of shielding at the choke all game, I just hammer things in the face and play like a reverse Winston while protecting my team's squishies. However, if it is a Pharah/split comp, I usually get screwed.
I feel like you didn't talk about one of his most important features, his Tesla cannons cleave damage. This can not only maximize DPS but it will charge ult extraordinarily fast.
regarding shield use.. there are times when an ally is gonna die, you jump on them and bubble to give them time to run away. Doesn't happen all the time cause how often are you looking backwards at your healers, but still a good shield use.
Can you guys make a video on the types of goals you should focus on to improve? (aim, positioning, gamesense, ult management, etc.) And why, how, and when to focus on certain goals.
When you talk about his bubble spliting off their team, this can be used for orisa too. People do this with symmetra without realizing half the time, but you can lock off their supports AND you don't have a risk of dying. Orisa can do the same thing. If you have a rein holding the choke and you put a shield in between their team, it will make them sacrifice good positioning and result in an easy team kill. Or it will buy you time making the dps turn around to destroy the shield, which means the tanks aren't being helped by their team, which can sway a team fight into your favor....
I have actually killed a full health hog 1v1 with Winston's ult before due to the fact I was constantly jumping onto him while punching him in the corner; a lot of people don't realize how much damage this can actually do.
you forgot to mention that you can use the jet pack then once you use your ult it instantly charges back and can be very helpful for trying to come back to your team faster and or contest the point.
and Winston can use his bubble to deny McCree's ult by having everyone in the bubble, it can deny D.Va's ult by placing the bubble on top of the explosion and getting out of the bubble asap, and it can deny Reinhardt's ult by putting the bubble anywhere in front of him.
Sometimes you want to jump on the high ground first and then drop down on people instead of landing on people. You don't do the damage but you can have your jump pack back when you need it.
If the Genji knows how to play and specifically knows the matchup against Winston, then it is impossible for the Winston player to solo kill the Genji. However, he could be really annoying when trying to kill the backline as Genji, so I highly recommend that if you are playing Genji against a monkey try to always keep sight of him, and try to only go on their backline if you know that Winston can't back them up. Loving your videos as always guys
It works both ways. Winston can force Genji out of the fight if he's close otherwise he risks dying. But Genji if he's far enough away can peck at Winston as well.
ill admit to putting my bubble at the choke usually as i jump past it...thought i was being clever initiating and giving my team incentive to run past it into cover
best play i had was on watchpoint defending, the attacking team was so focused on my team infront that i was able to get their mercy for pretty much the entire game. her team would run ahead i jumped in front of her and was really trading a 1 for 1 but they never got the rez so was really worth it. they never made it past that big bridge
I was wary of Winston when I first started playing, as someone who never really got into this sort of first person game until recently, I thought has role was to soak damage, because he's a tank. Come here and watch these guides, and now my winston play is pretty good. I quite often change opinions on winston when I play. When I play with friends, I am a tank player, I have just enough friends for a 6 stack and we play sometimes, usually run dive as we all find deathball or triple tank really dull to play. I usually go winston or Zenyatta and we seemingly always win. The calls I can make as the main initiator to our Lucio player to speed boost and help the rest of the team clean up after I dive in really helps and we usually wipe attack stages really quickly. I don't like the term main. I feel everyone should have at least one hero per category that they focus on learning, but have the capacity to switch. I play Pharah, Mei/Bastion, Winston/DVA and Zen/Lucio. However, if I had to pick one main, it would be the scientist
using winston's bubble on a d.va bomb is super useful too imo :P saved my team from being wiped out by putting a bubble over the mech before it exploded
Winston is so good against squishy. Loved jumping on mercy and ana. You get a pick on the healers and it is a huge blow to the enemy team. A really good carry tank. :) lol

Yep. SInce the shield deploys fast, you can use it to cancel ultimates too such as earthshatter, deadeye, and visor. Very underrated but insanely effective if you are sleight of hand.

This is by far your best Winston video to date, Winston is my second most played and I have a lot of hours on him but still learned a couple tips. Can tell you worked hard.

Winston paired with Ana, Mercy, or Zen is just OP. Zen's discord orbs make Winston's job almost too easy.
Well i mean, CC/Burst Damage is what kills Winston. Get rid of his mobility or disable him before he can get away and he's screwed usually if you have good communication or if you aren't a helpless support. Roadhog and reaper are excellent at countering Winston is since they keep him from harming anybody and entirely take away his fucking life very efficiently.
Personally I prefer mercy with winston because zen discord is single target were mercy damage buff can be fantastic against squishys
I main Winston with over 50 hours, and I can happily say I follow almost all of these rules. I learned more about the ult, especially jumping for more damage. Great guide, and great work as always
Some extra winston tips I picked up from a reddit post.
Winstons land animation (from using his jump pack) actually resets punch animations.
So if you Jump pack > Punch just before landing (so close enough to land the punch still in the air)> land > tesla.
That is the fastest DPS possible for winston initiation, as you do 30 + ~50 + tesla, without any delays in starting tesla. If you punch after landing you have to wait for the animation before you can tesla.
Secondly, VS armour, its apparently better to punch on cooldown, as punch deals more damage than tesla to armour. Secondly it conserves your ammo, meaning you will get more damage out before needing to reload. For example, vs D.Va you can punch on cooldown until shes out of armour and then tesla the rest.
These are some good tips, but I can't believe you didn't mention the high ground control at all. Miro doesi t all the time: He jumps on high ground and waits for an opening. That way he has more options available: he can bubble, or jump back up or just jump closer to a certain target.
That's especially important on defense where your safety has more value then on attack. Also not every map is equally good at this. Great maps are Anubis, Gibraltar, Dorado. The maps with alot of high ground around the objective.

Great guide! To add to your point about Winston's ultimate. In one of my game's the enemy team used a Zarya and Genji ult combo and I used my Winston ult to keep Genji away from my team while they were graviton'd, it worked fairly well to keep the enemy Genji under control.
I also like to use Winston to harrass the enemy support! Jump in behind the lines, pick off both supports, win the team fight!
This honestly helped me a lot. I was putting my bubble down at chokes and noobing out
Very good points! Also as an added tip, the main mentality you should have when dropping your bubbles is not to defend your team at its location, but to stop your opponents from their location. Doing so would split the enemy team's ana/hanzo/mcree.

One thing idk if anyone talks about a lot, the fact that Winston's electro-rave-sprinkler of a primary goes thru most shielding/deflecting abilities. Allowing him to apply pressure to certain heroes at times when most can't. Reins and Dvas who aren't thinking often obliviously hold their shielding abilities up in the face of a Winston assault rather than dmging him. Also I can't be the only one who loves shooting something that genji can't just throw right back at you.

I'm loving Winston on defense on payload maps. Kings Row streets is amazing for a defending Winston. It contains many ledges where you can spread damage onto the payload and diving and bubbling the payload in the midst of a team fight can almost guarantee a win as the enemies are momentarily forced away from the payload.

You forgot one use for the bubble, that being creating a zone that your DPS can use to duel things(or the supports even, dueling a McCree as Zen when you can dance around a Winston bubble makes it really easy).
one fun tip is to use the ult to get back to the fight quick. if you respawn and your team could still win the fight, its often worth it to jump, pop ult, and jump again back to the objective. its so quick that you still have time to get a few good swings at the enemy before the ult wears off.
While everyone's talking about Winston: if you didn't know already, you can use him to cross the Volskaya gap. Face the ledge a jump off sideways. Shortly into the fall, you'll be at an angle with the ledge that lets you jump up to it.
I've been learning Winston, he seems to be working really well for me in the "wait and pounce" style. I started playing him almost as I would Reaper. On Defense on like Numbani or Anubis, I wait on the high ground for them to commit to a push, and dive their back line.

Fantastic Guide! Kinda new to Overwatch. Really helped my game. I love Winston! Amazing how many players don't understand him. He's harasser not a tank. He's excellent against snipers, healers and classes that a glass canons. I had a guy playing Bastion screaming at me for not putting my shield up on him.
I've found Winston to be the most intuitive character. You have to learn to survive as him, and be pretty strategic relative to other heroes. A lot of the video felt like stuff that comes naturally after figuring the character out through play.
I cant say every video has had information that wasn't already common knowledge; but this video was seriously informative.
I think the biggest tip missing from this video is using the jump as a scouting tool, it's great in the middle of a fight to use that way. You just look straight up, jump take a look around below you and find somewhere else to take the fight, usually enemies will lose sight of you, at least on console this works pretty well.

I main Winston, and I really started to practice jump landing+melee alot more, and man that extra damage is crazy. Basically cuts the time it takes to kill a squishy in half
I would prefer a roadhog over a winston as a tracer main. Roadhog isn't a counter against a good tracer, you can feed your ulti so quick. And a good winston won't focus you as a tracer. He will focus your healers and than they beg for help and eventually you can't play your role well.
A full Winston guide... Oh heeeeell yes... I was so bummed when Kaplan said he was the least-played hero of all a few weeks ago, but it just makes me want to play him that much more.
I didn't know about the 'backward mini-jump'. Thank you! It was driving me mad that I could never do an optimal jump when trying to catch up to an enemy that's in this annoying medium-range.
As a Winston main my tips would be:
#1 Pounce squishy targets and the back line supports whenever you see them split or leave someone on their own.
#2 Use the jump pack as a way to escape from fights and retreat to your healers, not just to engage in battle.
#3 Ignore tanks unless they have low health or are the only ones alive, every tank (except sometimes zarya) can beat you in a 1 vs 1 fight, don't risk your life to put in some damage if it wont kill the target.
#4 Switch heroes immediately if the enemy team runs at least 2 of your main counters. Any combination of roadhog and/or reaper and/or bastion means you have to pick another hero right away. Often D.Va is a good option.
#5 Switch heroes immediately if the enemy team runs 3 tanks. Winston relies on quickly picking off heroes, not something possible against the high health of tanks.
#6 You will often find yourself getting very close to getting a kill, but
then having to reload and have your target heal up during it. Punch your opponents to finish the kill.
#7 Never jump into the middle of the enemy team, unless you have a clear health and player advantage. Approaching the enemies from the front where they see you coming and focus you down before you get any value should be avoided in general. Especially applies for the very first push in king of the hill maps.
#8 Always help your team. Winston is one of the most mobile heroes in the game and has an easy time moving from target to target, be aware of your surroundings and if you see a teammate in trouble, jump in and save the day.

2 things you didnt mention:
Using your bubble to block wnemy ultimates (pharah, reinhardt, mcree etc) is a brilliant use and can save a game. The same goes with orisa and sym although not really as much.
Also your ultimate resets the cooldown for your jetpack when you use it, and after it has finished. This can be great for mobility and a lot of people underestimate it.
These other things work for me I try to use a "If you aren't sure you can get out alive, don't go in" mentality.
1. you can bubble a dropped dva bomb then jump away to safety to reduce (completely negate?) damage to your team.
2. An exception to "don't jump/bubble into a choke": I do if they have a sym. Gives me protection from and while I clear sym turrets. Allows the team to break the choke with some cover as I do so (like all rushing the right corridor to then go upstairs on point 1 Hanamura)
3. If you are in a losing 1v1 battle with no jump available (e.g. reaper turns up) as it's on cooldown, they will impulsively chase you when they smell blood. As you run away drop a bubble, that means they have to run through two shields (each side of the bubble - you will have gone thru their second one by the time they breach the first) which might buy you the extra seconds of cover to come off cooldown/get back to your healer/around a corner into cover.
4. If you can initiate on clean up (e.g. 2 squidgies near each other but away from the group) try to save your jump. If you can initiate by flanking and getting some early surprise damage on both, by going a slightly longer less obvious route or dropping from a platform above, you always have an exit strategy if you kill one but may die to the second if you continue the fight. One dead and you alive is a better trade for your team than you leaping in, killing one and dying as well. You team is now a tank down and they lost only a lower value squidgy.
5. Look up, jump then immediately back down as soon as you have left the ground. Gives more time to see and fine tune your landing. With practice becomes more of a timed flick than two separate directional movements.
6. As you land a jump attack. immediately melee. This cancels the animation and allows you to get your gun firing quicker.
Also, as a long-time Winston main, I have some other tips:
- Use ledges and platforms to reach a vantage point. As Winston, you should maximize the damage of the Tesla Cannon by electrocuting the whole team! It also charges your ultimate faster.
- Glide on rooftops and slopes to get extra damage and air time.
- Don't be afraid to use your Primal Rage. It charges quickly. You can single-handedly stop an enemy team's attack by just killing an enemy and pushing them back.
- Use your Shield Bubble to stop Ultimates! You can deny so much damage if you pop it in front or on top of an enemy. Ultimates like Soldier 76's Tactical Visor or Dva's Self Destruct can be completely stopped with this ability.
- It's okay if you're not getting kills. As long as you're harassing the enemy, you're doing your job. By harassing, you are taking attention and creating space for your team. You can also cause the enemies to tilt.
- If an enemy switches to your counter (Reaper, Roadhog), this is a good thing! This is an extension to my point above^: You are forcing the enemy to focus onto yourself, which is a good thing. Play less aggressive and just annoy the enemy team.
That's all I have.
recently soloed from 2800 to 3300 as pretty much only winston. He's kind of like that carry tank that zarya was in season 2 if played right. Seeing people pick him after you've destroyed them on attack then picking them apart as you know how to play him is also incredibly fun.
Another tip for people if you want: Learn how Winston drops the bubble - how it's a little bit in front of him, and how slow it falls. That way you can do awesome things, like drop it off a ledge in front of you to block that high noon, or while doing a jump drop it on a D.Va ultimate and dive onto something at the same time. Again - just something that takes time and practice. But remember, you're playing as a giant science monkey from space - don't get too tilted when you fuck it up each game.

What about countering/limiting Symmetras influence on defense maps? I think that's another important part where Winston can be pretty helpful to have, especially on maps like Eichenwalde 1st (payload-)Point or 1st Point on Hanamura
I have two tips.
1.) When the zarya gravitons, don't ult. You will do more damage with your normal fire.
2.) If you have a reaper and he is ulting, dive onto him and drip your barrier. This will prevent him from getting picked off at range.
Even after a year, this has helped me so much. I'm plat as a rein main, and I just kinda figured that winston filled a similar role

I don't know why that short hop trick never occurred to me. I've always had to compensate for how far he jumps and swing around a lot while jumping after people and I can almost never chase down a soldier as I overshoot him too far and he just turns around. My level of menace has gone up drastically with this tidbit.

The rest of this video is standard gamesense but that 1 tip with the mini-jump I never realized. This is a nice dps boost when you are taking out the backline but more so this would be especially good for his ultimate.
Don't forget that you can harass Pharah as Winston as well. He's definitely not a counter to her but he can get to her and do a very fair amount of damage just from jumping past her and keeping your cannon on her. I've polished off a ton of Pharahs who've taken chip damage from a Soldier or McCree but were trying to duck behind cover to heal up. He's a great finisher for her.
As a Winston main, this was a good refresher
When I play rein against a dive comp, I only do so if it is a traditional style dive comp where everyone on the enemy just dives straight in, because instead of shielding at the choke all game, I just hammer things in the face and play like a reverse Winston while protecting my team's squishies. However, if it is a Pharah/split comp, I usually get screwed.
I feel like you didn't talk about one of his most important features, his Tesla cannons cleave damage. This can not only maximize DPS but it will charge ult extraordinarily fast.
regarding shield use.. there are times when an ally is gonna die, you jump on them and bubble to give them time to run away. Doesn't happen all the time cause how often are you looking backwards at your healers, but still a good shield use.

Hooking an ulting Winston as Roadhog provides more spooks than most horror games.
When you talk about his bubble spliting off their team, this can be used for orisa too. People do this with symmetra without realizing half the time, but you can lock off their supports AND you don't have a risk of dying. Orisa can do the same thing. If you have a rein holding the choke and you put a shield in between their team, it will make them sacrifice good positioning and result in an easy team kill. Or it will buy you time making the dps turn around to destroy the shield, which means the tanks aren't being helped by their team, which can sway a team fight into your favor....
I have actually killed a full health hog 1v1 with Winston's ult before due to the fact I was constantly jumping onto him while punching him in the corner; a lot of people don't realize how much damage this can actually do.
Winston is above and beyond my favorite tank. I love being able to carry with Winston; I often tend to out-elim my DPS even
you forgot to mention that you can use the jet pack then once you use your ult it instantly charges back and can be very helpful for trying to come back to your team faster and or contest the point.
and Winston can use his bubble to deny McCree's ult by having everyone in the bubble, it can deny D.Va's ult by placing the bubble on top of the explosion and getting out of the bubble asap, and it can deny Reinhardt's ult by putting the bubble anywhere in front of him.
Nothing is better than seeing an enemy with 25 hp trying to get away and you down and your jump is off cool down

Sometimes you want to jump on the high ground first and then drop down on people instead of landing on people. You don't do the damage but you can have your jump pack back when you need it.
If the Genji knows how to play and specifically knows the matchup against Winston, then it is impossible for the Winston player to solo kill the Genji.
However, he could be really annoying when trying to kill the backline as Genji, so I highly recommend that if you are playing Genji against a monkey try to always keep sight of him, and try to only go on their backline if you know that Winston can't back them up.

It works both ways. Winston can force Genji out of the fight if he's close otherwise he risks dying. But Genji if he's far enough away can peck at Winston as well.
Of course! Also, what I said about Genji can be used with Winston too, knowing when to protect your backline or attack theirs is a huge decision too

best play i had was on watchpoint defending, the attacking team was so focused on my team infront that i was able to get their mercy for pretty much the entire game. her team would run ahead i jumped in front of her and was really trading a 1 for 1 but they never got the rez so was really worth it. they never made it past that big bridge
Winston is also amazing at tilting the enemy team if they have counters to you but you continously kill their healers and run away.
I was wary of Winston when I first started playing, as someone who never really got into this sort of first person game until recently, I thought has role was to soak damage, because he's a tank. Come here and watch these guides, and now my winston play is pretty good. I quite often change opinions on winston when I play. When I play with friends, I am a tank player, I have just enough friends for a 6 stack and we play sometimes, usually run dive as we all find deathball or triple tank really dull to play. I usually go winston or Zenyatta and we seemingly always win. The calls I can make as the main initiator to our Lucio player to speed boost and help the rest of the team clean up after I dive in really helps and we usually wipe attack stages really quickly. I don't like the term main. I feel everyone should have at least one hero per category that they focus on learning, but have the capacity to switch. I play Pharah, Mei/Bastion, Winston/DVA and Zen/Lucio. However, if I had to pick one main, it would be the scientist

Winston is so good against squishy. Loved jumping on mercy and ana. You get a pick on the healers and it is a huge blow to the enemy team. A really good carry tank. :) lol
